A/N: I know I should have had this up much earlier and for that I apologize on the plus side for those that like Jesse he's back in this chapter! Also I live in Wisconsin hence the reason Erica and her cousins are from Wisconsin. I love the place I must say. The places they go in this chapter and later ones actually exist. Any Arizona fans still reading this she won't be making any appearances for about a chapter or two. Just a heads up. Now, without further ado chapter 20.
Erica offers to postpone the trip to Wisconsin for another time but Callie refuses. It has been three days since Arizona left the house. Callie has seen her all of three times twice in regards to Sofia and once in the hospital. Oddly enough Cristina and Alex had oddly enough taken up the communication detail. Any conversation Callie had about Arizona was to Alex and any conversation Arizona had about Callie was to Cristina. The conversations hadn't been many over the past three days and both Alex and Cristina kept the conversations short.
It was not easy for either woman to talk about the other and in most cases they wish they could forget the pain but there was no way to forget each other and it was at their worst moments of pain that one woman would inquire about the other. It was the reason Erica had offered to postpone the trip.
"Seriously Cal we can postpone. It's not a big deal. Jesse will understand." Callie shook her head. They were in the fourth floor employee's lounge; it was hardly used because it wasn't as central to the happenings of the hospital as the other employee lounges.
"I really want to go. I think I need this." Callie leans back in her chair and throws a Cheeto in the air and catches it in her mouth. Erica watches and smiles fondly before catching herself. The blonde shakes her head and attempts to refocus.
"I'll let Jesse know that you and Sofia will be joining us." Callie stops the motion of her hand from throwing another Cheeto in the air and straightens up in her chair.
"Actually Sofia is staying here. Alex told me it was the one thing that Arizona asked that she get to have Sofia while I was gone." Erica arches her eyebrow
"Alex was the one that told you that?" Callie sighs.
"Yeah, we are communicating through Cristina and Alex. Cristina talks to Arizona and Alex talks to me. It's…"
"Weird, strange, stuff you see on Dr. Phil?" Erica offers. Callie smiles at the pretty accurate description.
"Something like that. It's just all still so raw and we are both dealing the best way we know how." Callie sighs. "I never said it made sense." Erica places a hand on Callie's shoulder to offer support.
"Hey I am not judging, I am the last one with any room to do so." Erica pulls out her phone and types out a quick message. Both women sit in silence for a minute before Erica's phone goes off. She looks at her phone and smiles. "I just confirmed with Jesse. We are headed to the dairy state!"
It is a God awful hour to be up Callie thinks. The sun isn't even up yet. Callie sips on her coffee as she sits in the airport terminal. She should have known better then to let Erica book their flights. Erica returns from wherever she wandered off to, Callie too tired to remember and holds out a doughnut. Callie accepts but grumpily.
"You did this on purpose." Erica rolls her eyes.
"You are being dramatic Cal."
"Am I really? The sun isn't even up yet." Callie pouts.
"This is the reason I brought you the doughnut." Callie looks at the chocolate glazed doughnut in her hand and bites into it. She moans in satisfaction when she finds it is filled with Bavarian cream. She looks at Erica and finds the blonde sporting a smug smile on her face.
"Okay, you are forgiven for now." Callie says taking another large bite out of her donut.
"Hello Gorgeous." Callie nearly screams. All her attention had been focused on watching for her bag to pass and doesn't feel Jesse walk up behind her. Callie turns and smiles bringing Jesse into a hug.
"I've missed you." Callie says
"Same here." Jesse responds before pulling away,
"I just have to wait for my bag and…"
"Already have it." Jesse cuts in holding up her bag
"How did you…" Jesse nods his head towards the left and Callie sees Erica standing there with her bag.
"You know I have to wonder how long I have been standing here waiting for a bag that wasn't going to come." Jesse smiles and motions for her to follow him.
"It's best you don't think about it will only drive you crazy.
The car ride to Jesse's place is pretty peaceful. Callie notices a large gathering along the lake but Erica and Jesse refuse to tell her what it is.
"That's a surprise for later." Jesse teases. She tries to get it out of Erica but she seems to be having as much fun as Jesse keeping it from her. As soon as they settle in Jesse is ready to hit the road.
"So, what do you guys want to do first? It's July so we can finally go swimming in these parts. We have a pretty kick ass public museum or art museum. Let's see we can go ice skating…"
"Wait did you just say ice skating? In the middle of summer?" Callie asks sure that Jesse is teasing her again.
"Yup, we have an indoor ice rink. The National Pettit Center it's where athletes train for the Olympics!"
"It's settled I want to go ice skating!" Callie replies.
Callie only slightly regrets her decision later. Ice skating is not as easy as some of the others made it look. She was quick to catch on though and had fun trying to race Jesse and Erica around the rink. A whole other side was coming out of Erica.
Erica has always been competitive but now it is almost with a childlike enthusiasm as she teases her cousin. She never met any of Erica's family the first time around but found herself smiling a lot as she watches the cousins go back and forth. Callie's jaw nearly drops when she sees Erica jump in the air turning once before landing almost flawlessly.
"What was that?!" Callie asks impressed. Erica blushes slightly.
"I took some lessons as a kid. I had a natural talent for it but I broke my ankle pretty bad one year on the ice and decided I liked skating for fun more. My instructor wasn't too happy."
"Are you kidding?!" Jesse says as he skates around the two women. "I remember that. The Instructor came to your house and begged your parents to let you continue. She said you could have gone to the Olympics." Erica watches her cousin with a look that could murder. Jesse smiles with satisfaction and skates away.
"Wow Erica that's pretty impressive." Callie responds. Erica shrugs her shoulders.
"Not as impressive as being a cardiothoracic surgeon." Erica smiles at Callie before taking off after Jesse.
"Or maybe you're just impressive." Callie says as Erica spins flawlessly on the ice. She can hear Jesse calling the blonde a show off and smiles.
"Caaaaaaallllie." Callie groans and rolls away from the voice. She feels the bed shake. Callie groans again and pulls the pillow over her head.
"Come on Callie. I know ice skating took a lot out of you but even Erica hasn't been sleeping this long and she's older than you." Jesse gets no response so he leans in closer.
"Old lady." He whispers in Callie's ear. He just manages to dodge the pillow thrown his way. Callie sits up and pushes hair out of her face.
"I am up you jackass." Jesse smirks.
"Aww there's my Callie. Get dressed we have epic plans tonight and it involves the lakefront you saw earlier." Callie kicks off the blankets and starts to rummage through her suitcase. She quickly finds the shirt she wants to wear and pulls off the one she is wearing and tosses it. Jesse's jaw drops. He recovers and clears his throat.
"Excuse me man in the room." Callie chuckles.
"You are like the awesome little brother I never had. Can't say I am too worried." Jesse dramatically clutches at his chest.
"Ouch my pride." Callie pulls on her shirt and unbuttons her jeans.
"Not to mention you and Amelia have something going and I know you are not that kind of guy. Now out so I can finish getting ready." Jesse smiles as the mention of Amelia's name and heads to the door.
"I can see why Erica has the hots for you." Jesse leaves the room before he can see the effects of his words. Callie's hands stop rummaging through her suitcase and begin to shake. Her breathing becomes shallow and her heart starts to race. She closes her eyes as the realization truly sinks in. The feeling is mutual.
