X is for X-ray

Mai squirmed under Naru's glare. She felt like he was looking through her when he looked at her like that, that he knew all her secrets. It was like he was a human x-ray machine.

"And tell me Mai, how exactly did a horse cause you to be late to work today?" Mai swallowed. She knew she should have put more thought into the story, or ::gulp::told him the truth.

"Well, you see Naru there was this horse and it was.."She trailed off when the door opened to reveal a familiar face. A face that might be willing to help her. She felt a wave of relief wash over her. Yasu was immune to Naru's human x-ray powers. He could help her and run with this.

"OH YASU!" She was so happy to see him and the young man looked between her and Naru and smiled before giving Mai a sly look. "I'm so happy you made it through all that traffic that that escaped horse caused." She had her back to Naru and was desperately hoping he didn't detect the note of desperation in her voice. But Yasu got it and thank all the stars he picked up without missing a beat.

"Oh, Mai it was terrible! I was so worried about you. I know how you hate to be late and disappoint big boss and have his tea late." Mai grimaced, he sure was laying it on thick. Maybe this wasn't one of her better ideas but it was too late now. She had to commit.

"And pretell Yasuhara, what is this about an escaped horse?" He was looking at his research assistant in such a way as to bore holes into the other man. Yasu didn't flinch under the x-ray vision.

"The escaped police horse. The radio said it just went crazy and took off, threw it's rider and was running through traffic. Cars were completely stopped. It was a mess! I know my bus was completely stopped, I'm sure Mai's was as well!" He was being very dramatic about it. Mai snuck a glance at Naru. He had his eyes narrowed and was weighing what Yasu had just said. Finally he sighed and dismissed them.

Mai couldn't believe her luck. He bought it! HE ACTUALLY BOUGHT IT! She could not believe her luck. The human x-ray machine fooled. She raced from his office to start preparing his tea.

As she began to steep the leaves she didn't hear Naru's approach. She didn't notice him at all until it was too late. He was breathing down her neck. His voice in her ear.

"Next time Mai, just tell me when you overslept." He said and she blushed a furious shade of red.

The human x-ray machine knows it all again.
