H is for Heart
The human heart was a funny thing. It had all kinds of things attributed to it. Love, longing, pain, break, and both great sadness and joy both said to come from the heart. Not that that was true, strictly speaking.
By definition the heart was a four chambered organ residing slightly to the left in all human beings chests. Behind their ribs their heart would pump, it would draw in dirty blood via the vascular system, pump the blood through the chambers and oxygenate it then return it through out the body. That of course being a very simplified way to describe a very complex process. The point remains though, what people ascribe to the heart was really not. It was emotions, hormones, biological reactions and thoughts that people didn't want to own. So they explained them away as coming from their 'heart'.
Most people didn't think this deeply about things but, most people didn't love a scientist. So as it were Mai sat here, preparing her argument because Naru would challenge her. She knew she loved him, she knew that he made her pulse race and her thought process change. She knew all these things because she'd been studying.
For two weeks Mai had been researching human being's physical reactions to love, lust and other emotions. She could prove to him that she loved him and not his brother. She could argue her point intelligently and use science and examples to prove her carefully crafted thesis on the matter.
Mai was proud of herself. She had tried to consider all angles and have an argument prepared for his possible ones, and at the end of two weeks Mai felt ready. She was going to tell him today, over his first afternoon tea break. Lin would be out on business, she knew that the irregulars were all going to be busy so it was going to be the perfect time to tell him.
Or so she hoped...
