Pitch was worried. Her house was still empty when he came back when the sun was setting. Gen hadn't mentioned going anywhere when her father came home. He didn't think she would go anywhere without telling him anyway. She had to be somewhere in town. He would go look, but he wasn't sure where to start looking for her. Gen could be anywhere she might not even be in the town for all he knew.
"Pitch!" His name was called. He looked and saw the two humans that were friends of Gen's. He tried to think of their names. They were something…something common and kind of short. Gen would be angry if he couldn't call out their names. Hotdog and Drugs? No that wasn't it. No mortal was named Hotdog that he knew of anyway and Drugs was definitely wasn't a name. Then it came to him Frank and Beth that's where the annoy friends that he met names. Frank and Beth walked towards him at the little shrine at the gate of the cemetery. "We've been wondering where you were. Haven't you heard?" Beth asked.
"Heard what?" He asked. What could have possibly happened that he hadn't heard of? There were many things he probably hadn't heard of. He wasn't really in contact with his human world. He had no way to know human 'news'. Gen would tell him all he needed to know if he even needed to know it. Pitch knew he wouldn't even want to know it if it didn't involve Gen.
"There was a house fire." Pitch was confused at that. Gen's house was perfectly fine there wasn't any sign of a fire anywhere. "Gen saved some kid and is in the hospital." Pitch's felt a clench in his chest. It hurt literally hurt where his heart was. He'd never experienced such pain before. It was like something had attacked his heart. His heart had to have stopped momentarily. There was no doubting that it could have been the only thing to make his heart hurt, but why? Why had it hurt so much?
"Is she alright?" He asked hoping the pain in his chest would go away. He was starting to feel it less, but that didn't mean much. It could happen again. He wasn't sure if he could survive another heart stopping moment, but then he remembered the immortality he possessed. He could survive it. The question was if he would want to survive it.
"We don't know." Pitch's heart stopped again. Fate could be taking his Gen away from him. She would be taken to the underworld. He would have to go collect her if she died. He wasn't sure if he could live the rest of his immortal life without her.
Gregory was glad that the code blue wasn't for his daughter. As far as the doctor had told him Gen was doing better. Her oxygen levels had been rising slowly and steadily ever since she got to the hospital. The boy, Jacob had been to Gen's bedside before he was transferred out of the ICU. He had told him that Gen was sorry. That she told Jacob to tell her father that she was sorry. Gregory smiled it was exactly like his daughter to make someone tell him. It was something her mother would have made someone do.
Gregory squeezed Gen's hand. He hadn't left her side unless he absolutely had to. Even then he hadn't really wanted to. Gen's letter sat in his lap. He hadn't had the courage to read it. He wanted to hear everything from her mouth. She would wake up and tell him. Just like he would tell her how he was sorry.
Allison was going to head home and grab the twins and the dogs from the Bennett's. He was going to be forced to go home eventually too he knew. Gregory didn't want Gen to wake up without him there. Joy hadn't been without the two of them and he didn't want Gen to be without him. She was his little girl and nothing should happen to her ever. He should be in that bed not her.
Light was the first thing I saw. The second was my father shouting for someone. I was in a hospital I knew that was probably going to happen. Too much smoke so much smoke that I couldn't believe I'd lived. I could feel the oxygen tubes resting on my body. I could feel the oxygen going in my body.
"God that's bright." I said coughing as a doctor move a flashlight in my eyes. I was handed a glass of water. I drank it like a greedy person. The doctor said some things to my father that I wasn't really caring what they were probably all about things about me going home eventually.
My dad and I didn't say much it was mostly just the two of us staring at each other. Waiting to see which one of us would break first. It was awkward for the two of us. The tension between the two of us could be cut with a knife. Thankfully, the silence in the ICU was broken by someone screaming. I knew that voice too. It was unforgettably who the person running into the ICU was.
Pitch had finally found the place of death. He hoped that Gen was alive. Pitch could tell that the 'hospital' smelled of death. There was spirits everywhere. He knew the mortals couldn't see them all, but he could. He looked at each one hoping that it was not Gen. If it was Gen he was sure that his immortal heart would give out. There would be no more Boogeyman.
He had found the place where Gen's friends said she was. The ICU was a place that he knew was not a good place for a mortal to be. Gen was in critical condition according to her friends and she could die. He hoped that Fate was not going to take Gen from him today. She may have told him how she felt about him, but he hadn't told her nearly as many times as he wanted to tell her.
"GENEVIEVE!" He shouted as he entered the ICU. Immediately everyone looked at him. His eyes scanned the beds of the ICU and his eyes landed upon Gen. She was awake. Awake meant that she was alive. Alive meant that she was going to live a longer life that Fate was not going to take her away from him today. If he had to say anything about it, it was going to be a longer life than any other mortal that he had ever encountered.
"Pitch," Gen whispered, but he heard her. She said his name. He grinned like a madman. "What are you doing here?" She said. Her father looked just as confused as Gen sounded.
"I heard that…"
"I'm fine." Gen knew what he was going to say. "I'm going to live. Right, Dad?" She said.
"Yes." Her father patted her arm. "She's going to have to take it easy for a while, but she's going to be just fine. "
