Chapter 42 – 32 weeks continued
After the nurses were called Rick and Johanna were asked to leave the room so the doctor could examine her better. Within an hour a nurse had come into the waiting room and told them that she could have visitors again, one at a time. So Johanna let Rick go first.
"Hey babe," he said as he stuck his head in the door before she waved him in, a smile spreading across her face when she saw him.
He walked over to the bed and grabbed her hand, leaning over and kissing her on the forehead before having a seat next to her.
"You feeling okay?"
"I'm fine, just got a little bit of a headache."
"Kate, I thought…" he stopped, taking a deep breath and fighting the urge to just completely lose it right then and there.
"Hey, stop it, it was an accident, my fault." She reached up, wrapping her hand around his jaw, and started to play with the hair behind his ear.
"It wasn't your fault Kate, I shouldn't have put you in the position."
"You didn't know."
"You're the mother of my son, my future wife, I'm suppose to be better."
"You are human, and you were hurt by what I said."
"It doesn't matter."
"It does matter. Rick, I love you. I love you more than anyone else in this whole world. You don't deserve to doubt that. I am hormonal and right now I'm going through a lot of changes that are messing with not only my body but my mind."
"I know, and I shouldn't have been so hurt by what you said. I know the thought of having sex right now is unappealing to you, and I know it's not personal. I don't know why it hurt so bad, I don't know why I didn't take a step back and reason with myself. Instead I ran away, which caused you to run after me. You could have been seriously hurt, something could have happened to our son."
"But nothing did. Our son is healthier than ever and he will still make his debut when he is supposed to and not a day earlier. He isn't quite done cooking yet, although his mommy would love to meet him."
"And his daddy." He said, letting out a low laugh.
"I really want to go home and cuddle up with you in bed, is there anyway we can make that happen tonight?"
"I don't think so. They want to keep you overnight just in case. They say tomorrow will be worse then today."
She let out a sigh, and then took a deep breath to calm herself.
"I just want to be in our bed, with your arms wrapped around me."
"I do too babe. How about this, I'm gonna go get your mom, let her have a little bit of time with you while I run home and get a change of clothes for the both of us and our pillows. Then when I come back, I'll lay in bed with you and cuddle until you fall asleep."
"Promise."
"Yes, I promise. I need to talk to Lex anyway, make sure she is okay. She was really upset earlier."
"I can only imagine what she is going through, give her a hug and kiss from me and tell her if she wants to call me she can."
"No phone calls tonight, I think you need a break, but you'll see her tomorrow and I'll give her a hug and kiss from you."
"Okay, fine, but make sure you don't forget."
"I wont." He stood up and placed another kiss on her forehead before leaving the room.
He told Johanna the plan before leaving the hospital. The whole cab ride home he stared out the window thinking about how badly this all could have been and how lucky they were to have made it out absolutely fine. It was a true blessing that Kate didn't go in to early labor or suffer any permanent damage.
He walked into the loft to find his mother and Alexis curled up on the couch watching cartoons.
"Daddy!" The little girl got up and ran over to him.
He picked her up and threw her into his chest, her arms wrapping around his neck as he held her tight.
"Everyone is absolutely fine, your baby brother is tucked safely away inside his mommy and Kate is doing great."
He felt the little girl let out a sigh of relief before putting her back down.
"You wanna watch cartoons with me?"
"Actually I was hoping your gram would stay here with you tonight so that I could be with Kate. I don't want to leave her alone in the hospital."
"Oh absolutely darling, you go stay with Katherine, I've got the munchkin under control for the evening."
Rick bent down on one knee and pulled the little girl into a hug, placing a kiss on her cheek as well, "Those are from Kate, she wanted you to know she misses you and loves you."
"Tell her I love her more, and to please be more careful when coming down the stairs."
Both Rick and Martha let out laughs at the little girls advice.
"I'll make sure to tell her you said so." Rick said before standing up and heading towards their room, "Im gonna pack us an overnight bag and then head out. If you get upstairs and get your teeth brushed before then I'll come tuck you in."
The little girl took off for the stairs without another word.
"I wish you would have been that easy as a child." The older redhead said from the couch.
"Well, we are built a little differently, she and I."
"Yeah, I'd say so. I don't know how someone like her came from you and that ex wife of yours."
"Well, we got lucky."
"Sure did. So Katherine and the baby are really okay?"
'Perfect actually, thank God."
"Good, send my love will you."
"Of course mother, thank you for everything."
"No problem, kiddo."

When Rick made it back to the hospital Johanna was just leaving. The nurses had already come and done their check and Kate was struggling to keep her eyes open.
"Sorry it took so long, you're pregnancy pillow is really hard to stuff into a cab."
"Oh, I can only imagine, thank you for bringing it."
"Well I know how hard it is for you to sleep without it."
"It's even harder to sleep without you," She scoot her body over, patting the bed next to her, "Get in."
"You sure?"
She nodded slowly, a smile spreading across her face.
A smile broke across his as well before he placed the pillows on the bed and crawled in next to her, wrapping himself around her tightly.
"God you smell so good, I love everything about the way you smell."
"Are you being sentimental right now?" he asked, lifting his head to look down at her.
"So what if I am, I am just really happy and thankful right now that my son is safe and so am I. It's quite a miracle if you ask me."
"Do you remember it?" he asked.
"What? The fall?" Not really, I remember slipping but I don't actually remember the pain or the fall."
"Are you sore anywhere?"
"Yeah, kind of allover but it's bearable, nothing too bad."
"You sure?"
"I'm sure it will be worse tomorrow but right now, I'm fine. I'm perfect actually." She leaned up and kissed him on the lips.
"Now let me go to sleep, I already waited long enough just waiting on you to get here, im exhausted."
He brushed her hair behind her ear as he leaned down and gave her another kiss, "I love you."
"I love you too."
"Oh and Lex wanted me to tell you that you should be more careful when you're going down stairs."
"I think I'll avoid the stairs for a little bit.
