Love Me Forever Or Love Me Never
Chapter 13: Love Hurts

The wind gently blew a cold, swift breeze as Nico clambered up the ladder propped against his bedroom window. The way the ladder was shaking made the boy feel uneasy, despite the fact that his joy almost overtook any other emotion that gathered in him. He wouldn't feel at ease until his feet were once again safely on solid ground. Sliding his way through the bedroom window Nico rolled out onto the floor, sighing with contentment. He felt as though he was going to explode from happiness, a feeling that had long since left him. Struggling to his feet Nico ducked his head out the window, peering down at the figure still standing on the ground. Percy smiled up at him warmly before placing his hand over his mouth and blowing a kiss up to Nico. Normally when someone first started dating they wouldn't act so comfortable and affectionate around each other, but for Nico and Percy it was so different. The fact that the two had known each other for most of their lives caused them to care so much more about each other. Nico shook his head slowly before a pleasant smile occupied his lips. Blowing a kiss back to the boy on the ground Nico watched as Percy quickly held up his hand as though he was catching the kiss and placed it over his heart. Nico bit his lip as a blush covered his face. Percy was definitely a sweetheart, there was no denying that, but there was still a pinch of doubt in Nico's mind.

He expected Percy to be a heartbreaker- no matter how much he wanted to deny it. He knew in the end there was no way their relationship would last. Either Percy would end up being mocked for his feelings towards the boy, causing him to leave Nico, or Annabeth would somehow win him back. It didn't matter how it happened. Either way Nico would end up sad and lonely, carrying around a broken heart.

"Nico!" The word was hissed up to the window, jerking Nico out of his thoughts. Once again leaning his head out the window the boy looked down at Percy. "I have to go. I'll see you soon, okay?" Nico let out a light sigh before replying.

"Alright." He whispered to the boy. He was torn at that moment. He wanted to beg Percy to stay, but he knew the consequences would be steep if anyone caught the two together. Plus if his father saw Percy he knew the man would go absolutely ballistic and forbid Nico from seeing him again.

Finally, Nico knew there was no way around the fact that Percy would have to leave. Nico looked down at the boy with sad eyes, waiting for him to leave, but neither of them made a move. Neither Nico nor Percy said a single word- they just stared at each other. Both wanted to stay locked in that moment, although both of them knew Percy would have to leave eventually. A sigh left Percy lips, realizing that if things keep going like this they would end up standing there for hours.

"I love you." Percy suddenly said as he gazed up at Nico. His heart beat fast out of anxiety as he watched Nico's mouth open slightly as though he didn't know how to respond. They boy didn't say anything, but looked down uncertainly. Percy couldn't blame him if he didn't say the words back. After all Percy had truly put the guy through hell. He couldn't imagine going through all the things that Nico had gone through. He hated to think about it.

Finally Nico piped up. "I love you, too, Percy. More than you will ever know."

Percy stared up at him a moment, his heart swelling his chest. Slowly the boy nodded groggily before turning to leave.

Nico smiled quietly to himself as he watched Percy stumbled across the yard as though he was drunk out of his mind, turning around every once in a while to wave at the boy in the window. An occasional goodbye was whispered from Percy's lips as he continued his trek through the unkempt backyard; words that caused Nico to strain his ears to hear them as the boy got further away. Suddenly, Percy whirled around once more waving while he walked backwards. Nico stiffened a laugh as the boy backed over a fallen tree limb and fumbled to the ground. It took a moment, but Percy finally got back on his feet and keep going.

Nico waited tell Percy was out of sight before finally sliding back through the window and closing it behind him. Glancing around his dark room Nico sighed to himself, a broad smile forming on his lips.

"Yes! Fuck yeah!" Nico cried suddenly flinging his arms up in the air, cheering for himself. His smile grew wider until it hurt his face, exposing all his teeth. The boy let his arms fall back to his sides before quickly wrapping them around himself in a sort of hug. He bit his lower lip hard, forcing the smile back and trying to keep from having another outburst. After all he didn't want to cause his parents to run upstairs believing something was wrong with him.

Suddenly, Nico's smile faded, being replaced by a look of curiosity. He listened quietly, trying his best to not make a sound. The entire house was quiet. To quiet. The fact that he couldn't hear his parents walking around down stairs or talking was peculiar. Normal he could hear his parent discussing something or his mother shuffling around the kitchen. Surely they hadn't gone to sleep.

Walking across his room briskly Nico grabbed the door knob, completely forgetting that he needed to unlock the door first considering he locked it before he left. The door opened easily- only then did the though dawn on him. How was it open when he locked it before he left? A sense of terror flooded over Nico in that moment. Someone had been in his room. They knew he had left. He knew there would be hell to pay.

Opening the door slowly Nico looked down the hallway. The first thing he noticed was that Bianca's door was open across the hall and there she sat on here bed, looking sad and heartbroken. Nico slowly step out from behind the door cautiously. Bianca glanced up the moment she heard the door creak open. She stared at the boy for a moment before shaking her head.

"I'm sorry, Nico. I'm so sorry." She whispered faintly, a hint of agony twisted in her voice.

A chill ran through Nico's veins. He didn't understand or care what she was talking about, just the way she said sent ice through Nico's blood. What was she so sorry about? What could have possible happened to make her so sad? Did their parents finally decide what to do with him? If they did then what was it? It couldn't have been that bad, not bad enough to make Bianca break down in such a way.

Nico's eyes lingered on his older sister for a moment longer before he quickly shook his head at her, continuing his trek down the hall to find his parents. Nico walked down the hall, descending down the stair. The moment he walked into the living room he could feel the tension lingering in the air. His heart began to beat fast- heart beat growing so loud he could literally hear it as he walked. Heading into the kitchen Nico stopped short, eyeing his parents. Hades sat at the kitchen table, eyes staring thoughtfully at the table top. Maria shuffled back and forth from the sink to the cabinet, replacing the freshly washed dishes. Neither of them paid him any attention until Nico cleared his throat loudly. He wouldn't have done it, knowing he would have to face his father's wrath, but the silence was more unsettling than the screaming.

Hades glanced up at his son with a grim frown, although it wasn't angry or hateful. Maria slowly turned around to face him- she looked tired and worn. Slowly she walked over to the table, taking a seat next to Hades before calling out to her son.

"Nico, will you please come sit down for a minute?" She said pointing to the chair in front of her. Nico did as he was told, walking slowly and sluggishly, waiting for his impending doom. Although he was afraid of what was to come he was even more terrified by both his parents calmness. He just ran away, so they were going to act as though nothing happened? Shaking his head Nico pulled out on of the chairs and sat down.

Hades gazed at him with a hint of worry. So now he was worried? Nico snorted at that although neither of his parents noticed.

"Nico, why?" his mother ask. Nico gazed at her curiously wondering what she was talking about.

"Why what?" He asked gruffly before looking away from the two of them. He didn't want to meet either of their gazes.

"Why have you been acting like this lately? I know you've had some trouble with Percy Jackson, but do you really have to get out of control like this? Do you know how much we worry about you? I came up to your room and you were gone and the window was open with the ladder right below it. I thought you had run away Nico! If Bianca hadn't stopped me I would have called the police. Where were you?" Maria looked at her son with sadness reflected in her eyes. She truly didn't understand why Nico was acting like such. Why was he causing them to worry so much? Did he get enjoyment out of seeing the ones he loved suffer?

"I- I thought about running away you know. I just – I don't really know what's going on with me to tell you all the truth. I mean sometimes I just feel like I have already died and I should just stop trying. I'm so lonely, so sad, and it just happens all the time." Nico studied his parent's faces, wondering if he should stop or continue. They had a right to know what was wrong with him, but by the worried look on both of their faces he could tell that he had said enough. Even if he was making them worry about him more he didn't want to stop. If felt so good talking about this with someone, even if he was causing them pain in the process.

"I can't exactly say that I don't care about myself anymore, but to tell you the truth I wish I didn't. Sometimes I just want to stop feeling, stop thinking, stop regretting. I don't really know why I feel like this, I just do. I couldn't take it anymore, so I just left. I didn't have any clue where I was going or how I was going to get there. I just wanted to run, to go and never look back." Nico gave a sigh.

"What made you stop?" Hades cut in suddenly. Nico gazed at his father for a moment, not sure as to what he was going to say. He didn't want to tell them about Percy, but he was through lying to them.

"If I tell you why you have to promise not to freak out on me, alright?" Nico said slowly.

"Obvious course we won't." Hades said softly. Nico was surprised by his father's calmness. Although he had been calm the first time Nico came home this was different. He wasn't angry or rude, just completely worried. Nico glanced over at his mother, waiting for her response. She simply nodded.

"Okay, I was going to call someone that I meet at the party to come and pick me up. They gave me their phone number and I thought then would be a good time to use it, but when I opened my phone I realized I had six missed calls." Nico started. The moment he mentioned someone from the party Maria raised her hand to silence him.

"Do you mind if I ask you who this person from the party was? If you don't want to tell us you don't have to." Maria said softly, as though she would understand if he refused.

Nico nodded knowing that he would have to tell them about Leo and he also knew that he couldn't hide his feelings forever. He had never officially told his parents that he was gay. As far as he knew they thought he just liked Percy. The fact that he had had several girlfriends in the past also contributed to the fact that he was straight. But now would be the best time to tell them.

Pushing his chair back Nico moved further away from the table, making sure he could get a good look at both his parents. "His name is Leo. He was the one who was having that party. I had never met him before and the moment I did I liked him, a lot. I think I'm kind of in love with him. Which leads me to another thing I need to tell you. I- I'm gay. I mean I don't feel any attraction towards girls what so ever. I haven't really thought about that before, but it's one hundred percent true. I know I've dated a couple of girls in the past, but I never really felt anything for them. I mean they were nice and all, but it just didn't feel right." Nico said quietly as he bit his lower lip, a blush creeping onto his cheeks. He glanced up at his parents who looked at each other for a minute before nodding.

"Were you afraid to tell us this?" Maria questioned. Nico nodded slightly, blushing worse than before.

Maria smiled back at her son. "Did you think that would make us care any less about you Nico? If you did your wrong. We don't care if you like men or women. As long as your happy, we're happy. Now finish telling us why you stopped running away."

Nico looked at his mother for a moment in shock. He hadn't expected them to take the news so well and he thought his father would give him more than a mouthful about it. Glancing over at Hades he saw that his father was looking at him with a slight smile as though he was saying I couldn't have said that any better myself. Nico bit his lower lip, trying to suppress the smile that was forming on his face. He knew they would be mad once he talked about Percy, but right now they actually were pretty understanding about the whole thing.

"Okay." Nico said softly, "Well, I looked at my phone and realized I had six missed calls so I called the number back and the person who answered was… well it was Percy." Nico stopped for a moment, waiting to hear his parent's reaction. Neither of them said a word, just stared thoughtfully at their son.

"When he answered he asked me what I was doing and then I told him I was running away. The moment I said that he got all worried about me and started telling me I shouldn't do it and that everything was going to be alright. He told me I should come home and that I didn't need to run away. He started saying that he wouldn't know what to do if I ran away and that you all would worry about me. So he convinced me to come home." Nico said finally. He hated the way he sounded so repetitive, but he didn't know how else to put it considering he made up most of what Percy had said. He didn't want to tell his parents about the way Percy had come to him and the hot moment they had shared in the tree house so he was improvising.

"So you and Jackson are talking again. That's pretty good. I'm glad he convinced you to come home. Now, I have to know, the you talked earlier about feeling lonely and sad, do you think that would stop if you could just get away from everything around here for a while?" Hades asked slowly. Nico looked at his father curiously.

He shook his head yes, smiling slightly. "Probably, I mean there have been a lot of things going on around here that have kind of contributed to me feeling like that. Why do you ask?"

"Well, we thought it would to." Maria said softly.

"W-wait. What do you mean by that?" Nico tried to sound cheerful. After all he had just had one of the best heart to heart talks with his parents and they took every piece of news well, but he couldn't keep the worry from rising in his voice.

"After we found out you had ran off we thought it would be best if we found a way to stop this from happening. We were so worried about you, Nico. We thought maybe a change would help you a little, maybe if you could get away from all this for a while and start a fresh. So, we called your aunt and ask her if you could come stay with her for a while, just to give you some time to sort through your feelings and get things straightened out." Maria said with a hopeful smile.

Automatically Nico jumped up out of his seat causing the chair to clatter to the floor. "What?!" He cried out in shock. Hades was on his feet as well, immediately coming around the side of the table. He stood next to Nico, placing a hand on his son's shoulder.

"Nico, we thought it would help you forget everything that has happened lately. We asked if you could stay with her a week or two so-" Hades was cut off by Nico's cry.

"A week or two! She lives two states away and you want me to stay a week or two! How could you?!" Nico lashed out at his father, jerking out of the man's grip.

"Nico, we did it so you could-" Maria started as her son whirled around, looking at her viciously.

"I don't care why you did! I don't want to- I don't need to….ahhh!" Nico cried as he turned away, running from the room. Neither of his parents tried to follow him. He stormed up the steps and into his room, slamming the door behind him. Nico collapsed onto his bed, a sob wrenching from his throat before the whole room went silent. Finally, footsteps approached his door.

"Nico?" Bianca's quiet tap came from the other side of the door as she waited for her brother to respond. Nico lifted his head from the pillow, glancing to the door. He was already broken by that point; shaking, crying, heart smashed to pieces. He let a sob crackle through his lips before coving his mouth. How could this happen to him? The minute something goes right in his life it just takes a turn for the worst!

"Fuck! Off!" Nico's shrill voice echoed through the door and out to Bianca, followed by a series of sobs and some random cursing. The girl stared at her baby brother's bed room door- she hadn't decided whether she would leave or try to help him. Finally, with a sigh of defeat, Bianca turned and headed down the hallway towards her bed room, not bothering to look back.
