Okay, I know it isn't normal to pump out a chapter every two days, and I'm not sure how I even finished this one so fast. The words kinda just came to me, and I also had this one half written before I posted on Wednesday. It is actually 11:55 PM as I'm typing this sentence, so really I finished it in one day and 13 hours. All I can say is: Being on spring break gives me WAY too much free time.
I tried to hint at a few things in this chapter in my comments for last chapter. Here's also an answer to a question asked in the reviews: Yes there WILL be other characters like Ninten, Ana, Paula and Poo, and Duster and Kumatora, and all those other people.
Enjoy!
The dull sound of a bell rang through his ears. Lucas slowly came to awareness. He was in school, and a teacher was talking in front of the classroom. School was actually out at this point, but the teacher rambled on while kids left anyway.
He looked around, and saw Claus and Ness walking out of the room to his left. He quickly got up and caught up with them. They were to head over to Dr. Andonuts' lab now.
"Oh, hey Lucas," Ness turned around, "Dude, your face was blank the whole time in that last class."
"Oh, uh, sorry," Lucas was slightly embarrassed that people noticed.
"So we're headed to Dr. Andonuts, right?" Claus cut in.
"Yes," Ness nodded, "Meet me back where we were yesterday and then we'll go. I've got to do some stuff."
"Alright," Claus and Lucas walked away. On their way over, Claus had something on his mind, "Lucas, are you alright? You're a little off today."
"I'm fine, Claus," Lucas said, as if Claus were overreacting. They were often in opposite positions in a matter like this, but things changed as of late.
Ness met them at the designated spot, and they took the same route over to Dr. Andonuts' house. Ness attempted to engage in conversation, but the twins were too distracted to answer him consistently. The trio reached the house in the alley. Ness knocked on the door, and Jeff answered it.
"We're not done yet," Jeff told them, "But come in. It will be done in a little while." They all walked in, and Jeff motioned for them to take a seat. "We probably would've been done, but PK Love was so hard to figure out how to break down, and we're running short on the ingredient that blocks out PK Fire. So many PSI users have that, it is frustrating."
Ness and Lucas sighed. Ness looked at him with a flustered expression, "Jeff.. I know you're smart, but please don't talk about something you don't know anything about." Jeff didn't get it, while Claus just quietly laughed. Ness and Jeff talked on and on for thirty minutes with Claus occasionally trying to butt in. Lucas stayed silent most of the time.
Lucas's breathing started getting heavier. The other three boys paid little attention to this until he started having coughing fits.
"Lucas, are you alright?" Claus's concerned expression frightened the others.
"Yeah," he coughed, "I mean- I-I don't know. I suddenly started feeling lightheaded a minute ago."
Claus reached over and placed a hand on his brother's forehead, only to draw it back upon slight contact, "Lucas, you're burning up. Real bad."
"PSI fever?" Jeff asked.
"Jeff," Ness rolled his eyes, "This is exactly what I was talking about."
"No," Claus stood up, "PSI fevers are usually more mild than this."
"I don't know about that," Ness said, "I had a pretty bad one from PK Rockin' Omega."
"No, it isn't an omega level thing," Claus thought, "Lucas has omega level of lifeup and healing. PK Love didn't even do this much for me. I don't think it's a PSI fever. He's sick."
"Why is it happening just now?" Lucas wondered, "It was so sudden that I-I," Lucas stopped talking and looked dazed. He quickly stood up and put his hand on his face as if it were in pain. "I don't feel-" his quiet words trailed off, and he fell to the ground. He fainted.
"Lucas!" Claus cried, "What do we do?"
"Uh- um," Jeff seemed panicked, "I don't know! Ness! Try healing!" Ness used PK Healing alpha. Nothing. Beta. Still nothing.
"Oh no," Ness was uneasy, "I have no idea what's wrong with him."
"GO GET DR. ANDONUTS!" Claus yelled. Dr. Andonuts came out of the other room a little more than a second later.
"What happened?" he seemed concerned from all the shouting, "What is wrong with him?" he asked while bending over above Lucas.
"He suddenly didn't feel good, and he just fainted," Ness tried to calmly explain.
Dr. Andonuts lifted the unconscious boy and laid him on the couch, "Let him rest. I'm not sure what to do. This isn't a natural sickness."
There was a knock on the door and the room went silent. Dr. Andonuts walked over to open it, but first he looked through the window on the side. "Pigmasks," he said more worried, he looked to the three PSI users in his house. He shouted in a whisper "Ness! Claus! Take Lucas and go to the back of the house!" They did so. Dr. Andonuts opened the door to the Pigmasks, "Good day, gentlemen."
"We need to inspect your house. There have been suspicions of PSI users in the neighborhood," one of the two Pigmasks standing at the door rudely stated. An timer beeped in the other room, "Was that an alarm?" the Pigmask asked suspiciously.
"No, of course not!" Dr. Andonuts laughed, "Jeff, dinner is ready, can you go get it out of the oven?" It took a minute for Jeff to get the hint.
"Oh, right!" he blinked, "What do I do if it isn't done?"
"Set it out anyway," Dr. Andonuts answered, "Better now than never." He turned to the Pigmask soldiers, "We're having meatloaf tonight, would you like to join us?"
"Um, no thanks," the Pigmask passed on the offer of potentially uncooked meat.
Jeff ran to the back of the house, and found the PSI inhibiting drugs under a heater. They were finished solidifying. He looked for Ness, Claus, and Lucas in another room. They were there, quietly sitting in a corner near a back window.
"Here you go," Jeff handed Claus his and Lucas's medicine, "This one is for you, that one's for Lucas."
"Ok, thanks," Claus whispered, "Are the pigmasks gone yet?"
"No, I think you'll be safe back here until they leave though," Jeff looked back at the doorway and listened for a minute, "Dad is acting weird for them."
They silently sat until Dr. Andonuts came back to tell them they were safe. "Those guys were the easiest ones to trick. I've been practicing. They're probably running out of town right now," he laughed, thoroughly pleased with his work.
It was then that Lucas woke up, and he did so with a gasp, "What happened?"
"Lucas!" Claus embraced his brother who was barely sitting up, "You fainted. Are you feeling better now?"
Lucas took a minute to process this. He fainted? "No, I still feel terrible. My head hurts now, too."
"Well if you fall face first onto the ground..," Jeff mumbled, and Claus gave him a dissatisfied look.
Lucas tried to get up, but Claus stopped him, "You need to rest."
Lucas resisted, "Claus, we need to go soon. It's almost curfew, and we'll barely be able to make it home."
Ness waved, "If it's that late, I've gotta run. I'll see you guys tomorrow." They answered him with their goodbyes, and he was off.
"You're right, Lucas," Claus's green eyes cast downwards, "I'm worried about you, though."
"I can make it home."
Claus and Lucas left the alleyway house. Claus was partially supporting Lucas who had an arm slung around his shoulder. Lucas's balance was fading more as they walked farther through the empty city streets.
"Hey!" a voice came from a military vehicle driving on the road next to them, "What are you two doing up after curfew?"
"Curfew isn't until eight," Claus told them, trying to stay collected.
"It changed yesterday," a Pigmask corrected him. It was one of the same Pigmasks they encountered the morning before. "Are you too stupid to tell that from the fact that people aren't walking around anymore?"
"I'll show you who's stupid," Claus's voice did a gradual crescendo from nothing.
"Claus," Lucas tried to calm his older brother's temper, and spoke with a weak voice, "We're sorry, it won't happen again."
"You aren't getting out easy this time," the Pigmask opened the door of his car, "You're coming downtown." He grabbed them by the arm, and opened the back of the edited moving van. There were seats in there. Really cheap, metal seats where four people were already seated. They were forced into the back, and the door was locked behind them. When their eyes adjusted to the dim lighting in the back of the truck, they noticed a familiar outline of someone.
"Ness?" Claus questioned the person facing the wall.
"Claus? Lucas?" Ness turned his head back, "Did they get you for curfew violation?"
Claus nodded, "I assume you're here for the same reason."
"He got all of us for that reason," Ness looked at the other three passengers.
"No talking!" the Pigmask shouted at them, banging on the back of the driver's compartment.
The vehicle started, and the two boys took a seat. Lucas's balance was still deterred, and he kept almost falling out of his seat whenever the vehicle turned. He got really bad after that. Lucas started doubling over in pain when he felt as if he were going to vomit. He didn't vomit, but he felt like he was going to. Everything was so cold to him that he felt like he was swimming in Antarctica.
Lucas was also worried on top of his physical state. He knew Claus was worried, and Claus was supposed to be the strong one who never got scared. At least that's what Lucas's optimistic nature showed him.
In time, the car stopped and the pigmask opened the back. They were obviously in a prison. More pigmasks came into the vehicle, and handcuffed them and pulled them out. Claus attempted to help his barely standing brother out of the vehicle, but a pigmask brutally pulled both of them out. Lucas fell over on the concrete floor.
"Stand up!" a pigmask shouted, and lightly kicked Lucas in the ribs. Lucas lay there and heavily breathed.
"Stop it you- cowardly swine!" a girl, also in handcuffs, came out of the car with a pigmask, "He's sick."
"Then we'll be sure to put him in the prison cell for sick people," the pigmask said with a rough tone.
"That isn't right. You need to quarantine sick people," the girl corrected him, "sick people like yourself."
"Shut up, girl. We know what we're doing," another pigmask shoved her. "Sick people are useless to us, so we don't care about them." There was a moment of aghast silence from the prisoners, while the pigmasks snickered.
"Well no one cares about you," Claus stepped forwards.
"We'll see if we care about you once you get examined," the pigmask told him. Examined? What did that mean? A pigmask started bringing Claus off in a direction contrary to the others. "Wait!" he signaled for the pigmasks to halt, "Send them all to be examined, and we'll see how much they're worth. The sick one too." They were all brought into a room strikingly similar to a waiting room at a doctor's office. Even the seats were like ones that would be found there. The walls were painted white, and there was a door leading into another room on right side. "Wait here," the pigmask commanded as they filed into the room.
Each of the six teens took a seat in a chair. They sat quietly and looked about for a moment, all too worried to speak. Lucas was barely aware of what was happening at this point, but he tried to keep conscious.
The girl mentioned earlier decided to speak, "Are we able to get out of here?"
"No," Ness frowned, "They've got guards all over this place, and we can't sneak out easily."
"I know you three have PSI," she pointed at Claus, Lucas, and Ness, "I do also." The two not named boys uncomfortably shifted as if they were scared of PSI. "We can break out."
"No, that's too risky," Claus told her, "Besides, we hardly know each other. How are we supposed to know you aren't helping them?"
"Why on earth would anyone with PSI help them?" she asked sarcastically, making it sound like she thought Claus was stupid. "My name is Paula, by the way. And you are?"
"My name's Claus," he introduced himself, "Ness is that one," he introduced his friend, "And my brother is Luc-" Claus stopped talking from shock. Lucas's face was red appeared to be swollen, and he was struggling to breath. "Are you okay?" he asked with his heart beat increasing with each second. After Lucas didn't respond for a moment and his breathing became rougher, he asked again "Lucas?"
Lucas's rapid gasping for breath answered itself, he fell down on his hands and knees while he slowly ran out of air. Lucas was in so much pain at that point that he didn't have the will to get up.
Claus was on the verge of a mental breakdown from seeing his brother like this, "Lucas, please," Claus begged, "Somone," he was at a loss for words, "Ness, try healing, or lifeup or something. Anything! Please!"
Ness did what he could, and nothing happened once again. Lucas seemed to be worse now than he was before. He was in a lot of pain. All Claus could do was sit and watch his brother die. The other three in the room were also watching, aghast.
In the midst of this, something told Lucas to keep trying to survive, and he realized this. He wasn't quite sure what it was. Lucas's life was flashing before him and one thing stood out to him the most. Love. Love for his friends, love for his parents, love for his brother.
He fell.
"Lucas," Claus fell to the floor with tears in his eyes. "Please, Lucas don't die." Claus recognized that he was gone. He would be without his brother forever. He started crying like Lucas used to, but more.
Ness and Paula still barely knew Lucas or Claus, but they were both gently weeping. Paula seemed to be doing something else as well.
"Paula," Ness asked, "Are you praying?" She didn't answer.
Moments of silence followed. It seemed that it would never end. Then something miraculous happened. With a rush of breath, Lucas lifted his head off the ground. "Claus!" he shouted noticing his brother crying. Claus never cried, why was he doing it now?"
"Lucas?" Claus wiped his eyes to clear his blurred vision. He embraced his younger brother when he realized what he was seeing. Lucas was completely fine. Why so suddenly? He was in terrible pain a few moments ago, and now he is perfectly fine. "Are you okay?"
"I feel fine now," Lucas breathed with air filling his lungs and refreshing him. Lucas curiously asked, "Why were you crying a second ago?" everyone in the room just stared at the blonde boy, "Was I really..?" His only responses were wordless stares, "I saw everything, but I didn't think- Oh thank you Paula." She was the only one who understood, and it took her a minute, even.
"What's all the screaming for?!" a pigmask came in and angrily shouted. They all gave him nasty looks. "You're getting examined now. Come with me, kid." He pulled one of the unknown boys out of the room.
"What do they mean by examined?" Lucas asked.
"I don't know," Claus shrugged. He was glad to hear his brother's tenor voice again, boasting his newly perfect health.
"Oh no," Paula lifted a hand to her forehead, "We need to get out now."
"Why? What's the matter?" Ness asked her.
"They mean they're going to PSI test us," Paula stood up and paced worriedly. "They might not even have to if that boy they took is a plant."
"Lucas, take this," Claus handed him the PSI drug he got at Dr. Andonuts' lab earlier. Lucas pocketed the small tablet. "Ness, you're sure these work, right?"
"Yes," he nodded, "Dr. Andonuts is the best scientist around. And I'm living proof that they work."
"We're going to have to trust you," Claus sighed, "What about Paula?"
"Oh, um," Ness was at a loss for response.
"I'm covered."
"Alright, so what happens even if we pass the PSI test?" Claus asked.
"We're probably going to spend the night in prison for violating curfew," Paula answered him, slightly fretful. "Oh goodness, my mom is going to worry about me tonight."
"Same," Ness nodded, "My dad's probably going to beat me if he ever comes home."
Lucas and Claus looked down, wondering where their mother and father were. They knew that their mother and father worried about them every night for almost a year. The boys also worried about their parents. They weren't sure if their parents were dead, or if they were still in prison. They might have even been released from prison. They were out of touch and out of reach, though.
"Next!" a pigmask shouted through the door as the first boy walked out. No one came to him, "You, blonde kid!" he pointed at Lucas. Lucas hesitantly got up, "I thought you were sick, liar." Lucas had never been called a liar before, and it slightly shocked him even though it was a pigmask saying that to him.
Lucas followed behind the pigmask. He remembered what was in his pocket. He quickly and unnoticeably swallowed the pill, and he felt a dulling of his senses. His hearing dumbed down, and his vision became slightly blurrier. He no longer felt the slight current from radio waves that he never noticed in the first place. He never noticed how much he subtly relied on his PSI until he didn't have it. It felt different and uncomfortable to him.
Lucas was led into a room with a hospital bed and a pigmask doctor sitting in a chair. He was pushed to sit down on the hospital bed. The doctor was significantly kinder than the pigmask who waited in the corner.
"Ok," the doctor said, "Let me give you this little shot here. It will cause your PSI (if you have it) to activate, and that sensor up there will start beeping. It works by-"
"Just give him the dang shot! We've got four other people after him that we need to inspect," the pigmask was angry, "I don't want to be stuck here all night."
"Okay, okay," the doctor put the needle up to Lucas's arm, which Lucas instinctively shyed away from. "Don't worry child, it is just a needle." The doctor pushed the needle through Lucas's skin, and wiped away the blood with a microscope slide and began examining it. Nothing happened for a moment, but he felt some kind of energy awakening in him.
The sensor went off. How? Lucas took the medicine, how could it possibly not have worked?
"Only one PSI skill?" the pigmask laughed, "Haha! Weak."
One of the PSI skills might have not been covered. He thought through his set of abilities. He remembered telling Dr. Andonuts all of them. The word 'Love' subconsciously came up. Could it be?
Lucas was escorted out of the room by the pigmask. Lucas was yearning to be let go. Maybe they wouldn't take him since it was only one PSI skill? They reached the door to the room where the others were. Lucas wasn't let go. He was almost dragged out of the door they came into the room from. Claus, Ness, Paula, and the other two boys looked confusedly.
"Where are you taking him?" Claus asked, angry enough to stab someone.
"Wherever they take PSI using scum," the pigmask answered. A million thoughts flooded the three other PSI user's heads. Did Dr. Andonuts' invention not work? How could they find Lucas's PSI if it did work?
"Let him go!" Claus shouted. Ness and Paula backed him up. The pigmask kept walking along with Lucas.
"Claus, don't," Lucas pleaded, "It will only be worse for you."
"No, it will be worse for him!" Claus yelled as he reached his hand forward and launched a PK Love at the pigmask. The pigmask fell unconscious.
"Claus!" Lucas worried that his brother would meet a worse fate than he would. That was the first PK Love that Claus had used since he learned it. He knew how much his older brother hated PK Love after what happened about six years ago.
"He's going down. And if they're taking you away, I'm going with you," Claus walked to his brother.
"I'm in, too," Ness stepped foward, and Paula with him. "You know we're going to resist them, right?"
"Of course," Claus nodded, "We've already gotten into this much trouble."
"And dude, if you have a move like that one you just used, we're going to win," Ness told him. Claus slightly stumbled backwards. He gave an unsure glance.
Lucas swallowed hard. "Claus," Lucas stared into his brother's eyes, "There's something I need to tell you."
"What's that?" Claus was worried by Lucas's tone.
"I learned PK Love."
So.. Yeah. That happened. I'm not exactly sure about some parts of this chapter, but it's the best way I can get it where I want it to go. I'm excited to write a fighting scene with WORDS first thing next chapter. Never tried that before.
I tried to make this chapter more centered around Lucas, because that is what I intended this whole story to be before I wrote one paragraph of the first chapter. It didn't quite work as well as I hoped to. I guess the timing wasn't right or something. (I still think Lucas is the best video game character of all time even if I can't write him how I want to)
Reviews/Comments/Criticism are VERY appreciated. Thank you guys for taking the time to read this. It makes me proud of the work I do on this to know at least one person followed/favorited this story in spite of my poor writing.
ALSO, I'm attempting to become a socially active member of the Mother fan community online. (I'm honestly not sure if I'm allowed to ask this part) So to do this, I have thought of making a twitter community with parody accounts of a majority of the main characters. PM me if you'd want to help me with that, because I can't run like 12 twitter accounts by myself.
(Sorry about writing so many author notes)
