Chapter 30: FAILSAFE

Hey, Hey, Hey! Oh my gashhh, It's been weeks! So sorry for the late updates and everything because I got finals week for summer and the pressure is on for us!

I really miss this writing thingy! I miss YJ!

Don't worry I'm not gonna breakdown while I'm writing this. So to make it up to you adorable readers and fans, I'm gonna update!

Anyways, hope you like this chappie!

MOUNT JUSTICE

October 16, 2010, 16:01 EDT

We all watched as each hero was vaporized. Another screen appears and Red Tornado checks it. It's Zatara. My heart twitch as I saw Uncle John and Hal were vaporized.

"Tornado did you-?" He says.

"Yes, Zatara we saw. Celestial defenses have failed." Red says casually. "Initiate all terrestrial measures."

"Affirmative. See you in the field." Zatara screen closes.

Red turns to us. "I must join the league. We will protect the planet at all costs. But should we fail, the responsibility falls to you."

The words send chills in my spine, causing the beat of my heart to pump fast. Come on, Dani. You can do this. This is why you join the team.

"We stand ready." Aqualad says confidently.

The screens show that more heroes dead. Oh my god. I can't stop my heart from beating fast. Keep it cool.

"We are earth's heroes now." Aqualad says. Man, how come he is so calm?

Superboy turns to him, "What are we waiting for theme song?"

"A strategy. Earth's weapons are inaffective." Kaldur says. "And it has been made tragically clear a direct attack will not succeed."

"Checking satellite imagery." Robin types to his holographic computer.

A big hologram figure of earth showing big red dots all over it. "Here's where the aliens are now."

As the holographic earth keeps on spinning. A small dot is placed on an ocean. "This one got lost?" Connor asks.

"It's Superman's fortress of solitude." Robin revealed. I punch him in his arm.

"Ow!"

"Superman has a fortress of solitude?" Connor asks.

Robin gives me a dirty look and rubs his arm. "It's power must have attracted the aliens attention, at least enough to send a scout ship to investigate."

"Must be some fortress." Connor turns his back.

Megan puts a hand on his shoulder. "Conner…"

"No. It's okay. I guess there's a lot of Superman I'll never know." He says sadly. Poor guy. "Uh you know. Now."

"We will target this lone ship." Kaldur says.

"Yeah. Break it down, build more, hit those ugly aliens with their mojo." Kid says.

Artemis hits him and whispers something to him. Aw, they are so cute together. "Ah, not all aliens are automatically ugly."

We made it to the fortress of solitude and I realized that it is in a middle of nowhere and its freezing. Dang it.

I turned invisible and spotted the ship. It's just staying there as if waiting for something.

The ships left engine got ripped by Miss M. The ship falls to the ground but it was only the communication that was disabled.

Artemis fires an arrow with something gross, aiming it at its eyes. The upper cannon kept on shooting Artemis's place and she wasn't hit.

Aqualad emerges from the frozen lake and attacked from behind. The cannon aimed at him but wolf attacked first.

Superboy appeared trying to unaimed it at us.

All of them appeared and Rob instructed Megan to disabled the cannon. My mind feels bad. I can sense something bad is about to happened.

Superboy tries to dismantle it and something's not right. Wolf jumped and toke the blast and he was gone. Oh no.

They kept on going for it and I checked the sky. It's not right.

Superboy put the cannon at the bioship. Megan explained before that when she needs to do that kind of stuffs, the ship will decamouflaged.

I teleport and make a big shield around us. "They can't see us for now. I cannot hold this for long."

They nod and I focus on my shield. Two ships appeared and they seemed to spot us. "Guys…"

The lights of the ship glowed causing me to unfocused. I dropped to the ground and the ship starts firing at us.

"Get some cover!" Artemis says and she fires them with her arrows. One of the ships crashed fully but one was still active. Oh no.

I rushed forward and my hands were all glowing. The cannon prepare and shoot her. And she's gone.

"Artemis!" Megan screamed. I dropped to the ground and I could feel myself losing.

"Artemis!" Wally yelled. The white light in my hands were glowing hard, waiting to escape.

Aqualad take out his water bearers, "Get inside, all of you." He makes a big splash on the water and attacks the ship with sharp shards of ice.

"They're dead every single alien if it's the last thing I do!" Wally says angrily. It's all my fault, I could have save her, I could have teleported her out of it.

My whole body is shaking. It's all my fault.

We went inside the bioship in camouflaged mode. The whole room is silent except for Megan, she's crying. My hands won't stop shaking. And my breathing is irregular.

Wally kept on yelling in anger and pounds the desk.

"There will be time to mourn later, Now we have a job to do, defend the earth and ensure that Artemis's sacrifice was not in vain." Kaldur says.

"Back to the cave?" Megan suggested.

"The Hall of Justice." He answers. "The human race must know that there are still heroes defending them. There is still hope."

We arrived at Washington DC and the place is a battlefield. We spotted another ship and Megan opens a hole for Superboy. He leaps out and attacks it.

The bioship shoots two more, sending them to the ground. We land outside of the Hall of Justice and the military army were yelling. Maybe happy to see us.

"See? It is Superman." One of the soldiers says.

"I don't know. He looks kind of young. Where's the cape?" The other guy asks.

"I'm not Superman." Superboy says.

The general steps closer. "I don't know who you are son and right now, I don't care. You were the S and you get the job done."

"I'm not Superman." He said again. "Tell that to the enemy."

Kaldur steps closer to him and the general salutes. "General Wade Eiling, US Air force."

"Aqualad. Justice Leaugue. We'll help you salvage as many of the alien's cannons as possible, then we start taking back what is ours."

We went inside the Hall and it is messed up. At least the statues of the Justice League are still standing.

"They're really gone." Robin says sadly. I clasp my hands and still they are shaking. Why won't it stop?

Robin holds my hand and I didn't look at him in the eye. I can't take this anymore. "Dani…"

"I can't do this, R—ob." Tears start to fall in my eyes but I just held them back.

Megan levitates the statue of Martian Manhunter. "Uncle J'onn!" She says.

Rob takes his hands back and we moved over. Before Megan can hug him, Kaldur stops him. Maybe he wants to check his mind.

"But we saw you get disintegrated. You and Superman. And everyone." Superboy says.

"Yes I remember. But… I cannot remember how I survive." Manhunter says and Megan helped him.

"My uncle and my brother. Are they alive too?" I asked hopefully.

"We don't know yet." Kaldur says.

Manhunter continued, "I do not remember how I got here."

"Maybe you were density shifting, the beam passed right through you." Megan says, full of hope.

Robin continued, "Scrambling your brains along the way."

"I feel certain I had something important to tell you." I wonder what he wants to tell her. Maybe it's about how he got here. Or something.

Wally slaps his head, imitationg Megan. Robin and I exchanged glances. I send him a look, What does he mean? He raises his shoulder meaning he doesn't know anything.

The three of us went outside and Rob scanned the cannon. "I don't get it why we're here." I looked at the sky. "We have to hurry though or else were next."

"I knew it. Look." Wally pointed Rob's holographic blueprints on the cannon. "It's giving off zanopenes, the same stuff that powers our zeta tubes. This thing doesn't disintegrates, it teleports."

"It means that both Uncle John and Hal are alive!" I say happily.

"Artemis is alive!" Wally joins my excitement.

"Maybe…" Rob says.

"No maybe's they're all alive!" Wally says.

We looked at each other and Rob doesn't look satisfied. Rob grabs me and we all hide under the tank. I take a look and there are a lot of them hovering midair.

"I can shoot them." I suggested.

"No." Rob says. "We have to get inside."

The bioship isn't in camouflaged mode. I put a big white shield to protect the bioship. "Dani!" I heard Rob yelled behind.

The ships fired at the shield. "Ahh!" My mind hurts and I was saved by a pair of hands. "Get inside!" Rob says.

Rob carry me via bridal which surprises me that he is strong. We went inside and find Megan crying, the bioship has been hit.

"Were trapped!" General says.

Aqualad opens the door that leads inside the Hall. "Maybe not."

We went inside and Rob places me on the sofa chair. "Dani you okay? Can you walk?"

I try to think and my mind still hurts. "It still hurts. I can use any of my powers if I think. But I can walk."

We went to zeta tube and Kaldur plans to send the soldiers first. Rob places my arm on his shoulders and we waited for the door to open.

The door opens, "What about the soldiers?" I asked.

"You have to go first! You're the only hope." General says, aiming ready.

Megan goes first then Rob. The computer scans me and I was next to go. I open my eyes and we are in the Cave.

I noticed that Kaldur didn't make it. Robin takes the lead.

"Our next mission is clear." Rob says. "If we believe that the aliens have been teleporting victims."

"We do." Wally agrees.

"Then the only reasonable detention facility is here." Rob shows something in his holographic computer. A big picture shows the mother ship of the aliens.

"The mother ship. Atop of what used to be Smallville." We turned to Manhunter.

"No I'm sorry." He answers.

"Superboy you'll create a distraction." Rob ordered.

"No!" Megan objected. "He's offering you as a sacrifice. Aqualad would never do that."

Wait, my light thingy powers can stop them. Maybe they can't hit me or anything I can still destroy the mother ship.

"You're right. Aqualad would sacrifice himself, a mistake that just cost us our leader." Rob says.

He continues, "Superboy is the most likely to be perceived as a threat, motivating the aliens to deploy."

"Worst case, he's teleported inside and we set him free along with Artemis." Wally explains.

"I don't think that's a good idea." Everyone is looking at me. "Look I get that you're all hopeful because of the zeta tube thingy that we've found in the cannons but what if they aren't there?"

"Don't you want to find your brother and Uncle?" Wally asks. I really don't want to fight anyone, I really do but this is so dumb.

"Enough." Rob says. "We have to broadcast."

They started recording and Rob is sending it to all channels to phones, computers and TV's. I really don't want people to look at me so I just leave it to them to do the talking.

We prepared and I give Rob his belt. "Hope you're idea works." I say.

"It will work." He says confidently.

We arrived to where the mother ship is. Robin is looking at it with his binoculars and I prepared my dagger on my belt. My head starts to hurt and throb. Ow, ow, ow.

I punched the tree, the pain is still in my head. "What's happening to me?"

Finally the pain slowly dissipates. "First team deploy." Rob says. Megan and J'onn went inside.

We waited and Rob nods his head. He nods at Superboy and he went out. He's making distraction and I followed him. I create a protective shield on him so that they can't shoot him. I just have to be careful.

The doors opened and Rob and Kid went inside. I went inside and follow them. The place is all red and weird. We hid as one of the ships past us.

Someone throws something at the alien and thankfully it was Megan. I turned invisible and follow them.

Megan stops and drops to the ground. It's Connor, he's gone.

"It's alright. We'll find him along with Artemis." Kid says hopefully.

"No. My mind is clear now. The disintegration beam is exactly that. There is no detention facility, no prisoners to rescue. Our mission holds no purpose." Manhunter says. I knew it. Such idiots.

Kid grabs his collar. "No you're wrong! The zeta radiation proves she's still alive!"

My mind hurts again and something flashes before me. Screaming in pain. Explosions everywhere. It hurts so much if I try to think about it. I cannot let them know about this. I try to clear my mind and the pain is gone for now.

"Our mission still holds its purpose. To destroy the mother ship." Rob says.

We went back to our mission. We arrived at the core where a big power source is glowing yellow. "This is the power core. Blow this, the whole mother ship blows." Rob says.

We take a step closer and somewhat it drags Rob along with Kid. There are aliens waiting to fire and I teleport and shoots them with my beam.

Megan slowly lowers Rob, for him to place the bombs. "We got four minutes." He says. I have never seen Robin like this before. He's driven and focused.

We went to the door and it was closed. "I can teleport you guys out." I suggested.

The aliens appeared and starts shooting at us. We hid behind the walls. "16 seconds and counting. Manhunter take Miss Martian with you."

"No!" Megan objects. "We won't leave you!"

"That's an order. We'll follow as soon as we blow those doors." Rob says.

"Dani can get them out." Megan says.

I nod. I glanced at the holographic watch. We got ten seconds. "Come on guys, I can still get you out."

They just nod at me and they fight. What a jerk.

Suddenly the whole place exploded and I was out.
