I touched Maggie's belly with wonder. A child. There was a child in there. A tiny person would come into this world and I would be it's father.
She smiled. "You'll dote on this baby more than I will, won't you?"
I smiled back. "Maybe. Though I wouldn't put it past you. I hear the first is the most nerve-wracking for a mother."
Something crossed her face then, something I couldn't read. She stopped smiling, and for a second I thought she would say something.
Then a car honked outside, and the second passed.
I never brought it up again.
