Chapter 39: Christmas

He really should have expected this to happen. He didn't know why he thought he would be so lucky as to have a peaceful Christmas with Kensi without work. So as he sat at his desk on Christmas morning, a cup of eggnog and Starbucks in front of him, he felt a pang of envy and devoid of the joy that other families had at the same moment he had bitterness. The new picture frame that sat atop his desk was his only comfort. He hadn't really talked to her since before she left and all he could think about was her. All he wanted for Christmas was her back home but he knew that wouldn't happen. They were nine hours ahead of him. And unless they infiltrated the heavily armed warehouse they found without surveillance, she wouldn't make it home in time.

He sighed again and checked on his few leads that he had. It hadn't been difficult to pull electricity bills and find where they were keeping the consul General. And it certainly hadn't been difficult to backstop Sam, Kensi, and Callen or as they were now known as Mr. Reese and Mr. & Mrs. Lockhart. So he wondered again why Granger had sidelined him and left him there while the rest of the team was in Dubai. He thought of Kensi on the pristine white beach in her bikini, hair up in a pony tail, sun kissing her shoulders, and the waves lapping at her feet as she sat watching people surf and build sandcastles. It was an image that brought a smile to his face however brief it was.

" . Up to Ops if you will." Hetty said coming up from behind him. Deeks jumped and screamed startled. He cleared his throat and got up to go up to Ops to see Eric and Nell.

Instead of seeing Eric and Nell he found only Granger. The monitors were still up and running so he could assume Granger kicked them out. He stopped a few feet away and crossed his arms defensively.

"Why did you sideline me?" He asked before Granger could speak.

"You should have never been put back in the field in the first place." Granger replied with his usual scowl slash emotionless face.

"What?!" Deeks cried. "Why the hell not?"

"You're missing a kidney."

"Yeah and...I got another one don't I?" He retorted.

"That alone would have disqualified you for a lot of jobs like the military."

"But this isn't the military Assistant Director. This is OSP and my work hasn't been affected."

"That's not the point." Granger said.

"Then what is, pray tell?" Deeks asked sarcastically.

"You're damaged goods. I can't have you out in foreign countries when you're missing a vital organ. That increases your chances of death in the field in undercover ops."

"Increases my chances of death? I increase my chance of death by eating bacon!" He yelled outraged. "Or when I tell Kensi to shut up. I risk my life everyday for this job because I'm good at it and I'm making a difference. I can't do much good if I'm not put in the field. So who gives a rats ass if I die here or on an undercover mission?" Deeks said refuting Granger's argument.

"From here on out you won't be doing any high profile undercover work. You can continue your everyday work here but when needing to go undercover in a foreign country or for a high profile target you will not be a part of it. Do you understand?" Granger said with an elevated voice.

Deeks ground his teeth together and said through grit teeth, "Yes Sir."

"Good." Granger said and walked out. Deeks scoffed.

"Merry Christmas to you too."
