Chapter 20
Once Jay and Erin had entered his apartment and the door was closed, he couldn't hold in his anger any longer. "Why did you talk to Voight?" he spat out a little too loudly.
Erin whirled around, utterly surprised. "What the heck? I was looking out for you!"
"I didn't see it that way," Jay retorted. "I can look out for myself, you know."
"I know you are perfectly capable, okay?! I just-"
Jay cut Erin off. "Then why did you? If you know that I'm perfectly capable?"
"Because I care about you, okay? And Voight already hurt you once when he thought I wasn't around, so who's to say he won't try to hurt you again?"
"You know what, Erin? I can handle myself," Jay yelled back.
"I know you can, but sometimes everyone needs a little help, okay?!" Erin replied, at full yelling volume. All of a sudden, she felt light headed, and after she sat down on the couch, tears filled her eyes as she remembered how Voight had rescued her when she was 16. How she had believed that she could handle herself. And it turned out that she had actually needed help.
"Erin?" Jay asked, trying to be sympathetic, but still feeling mad. When Erin stood up and headed for the door, Jay said, "Erin!" in a more serious tone as he walked after her. Erin whirled around at the door and said, "Just stop right there, Halstead. And don't follow me." And with that, she was out in the door in a flash, bag and keys in hand.
After Erin had slammed the door shut, Jay turned around and banged his head against the wall. God damn it, he thought, Jay, not a smart move. Seriously, what were you thinking? He then remembered that Erin had called his by his last name – and it was the first time in a very long time that she had done that outside of work. Wow, that means she really must hate me right now. Great.
Jay walked into the kitchen and tried to figure out what he was going to do for the rest of the evening, since his original plans to get takeout dinner with Erin had just been cancelled. He decided on ordering pizza and breadsticks, and sat down in front of the TV as he waited for the pizza to come.
Four hours later, at almost 12 am, Erin Lindsay found herself at Jay's front door again. She had gone to 51 for a while to cool off with Dawson and Shay, and after talking to them she had felt bad about what had gone down between her and Jay as well as talking to Voight without asking Jay first. She wanted to apologize and hoped that he would listen.
"Hey there," Jay said, surprised to Erin on his doorstep, "I wasn't sure if you were coming back here tonight."
Erin stepped past him without saying anything, and after Jay had shut the door and turned to her she said, "Jay, I'm so god damn sorry. I was just tired from a long day and I thought I was looking out for you but now I see that I should have asked you first and I feel so bad about our fight earlier I just-" She was cut off by Jay planting a deep, passionate kiss on her lips. She immediately returned the kiss and felt relieved that he had accepted her apology.
When they pulled apart for air, Erin repeated, "I'm sorry Jay."
"I'm sorry too," he replied softly, "I shouldn't have gotten angry about it when I knew you were looking out for me."
"I forgive you," Erin replied, putting her forehead against Jay's. She looked down at her big baby bump, which was touching Jay's midsection because they were so close together. Erin gave Jay another kiss and said, "And now, if you don't mind, I'm dying for ice cream. Still got any in the freezer?"
"Sure do," was all Jay said as he pulled out the ice cream container and a spoon. Erin sat down on the couch and didn't say a word as she began to eat straight out of the container. Jay knew Erin well enough that she wouldn't go to the extra hassle to put it in a bowl. She would just eat it.
A little while later, Erin pulled out the paperwork that they had signed the other day for their new two bedroom apartment. It wasn't too far from Jay's place, but was bigger and closer to the precinct. "In four weeks we'll be moving. We need to pack," Erin commented.
"We'll get it done," Jay assured her. "Besides, Casey from 51 is going to help me put together some stuff for the baby's room and paint the walls. Blue, right?"
"Yes, I definitely think blue," Erin agreed. She thought to herself that she wasn't sure how she was going to be able to help at all in four weeks' time, but she also knew that she would find some way to be occupied. Then she started feeling tears in her eyes, and Jay said, "Erin? What's wrong?"
"I just can't believe this is all happening," she replied, wiping her eyes, "I can't believe we're going to be a family."
"Me neither," Jay admitted. "Me neither."
