Chapter One

A regular day in the life of Rin Kagane

Soft early morning filtered through thin white curtains, easing the gradual outside brightness allowing the blonde girl who was tangled up in her bed sheets to keep sleeping, that was until her alarm filled the room with jarring beeping. A soft mumble that was followed by a yawn and Rin slowly untangled her arm from her light orange bed sheets and stretched out to hit the snooze button on her alarm clock that she had put just far enough that she would have to lift herself off of the bed to turn off to try and prompt herself to get out of bed.

It of course didn't work since as soon as she hit that glorious snooze button she fell right back into the warm sheets closing her heavy eyes again snuggling her cheek into her pillow.

Rin was exhausted, she had had a busy day the day before yesterday and after taking care of some...things, she had went back to her flat and studied for an upcoming Concept of Real Analysis math class, Professor Meiko was a nightmare to have when it came to tests no matter how nice she was outside of it.

Slipping back into the sleep she longed for Rin was jarred awake by the alarm going off again, dammit the snooze was never long enough. The blonde sighed heavily and sat up properly rubbing her heavy eyes before she finally properly turned her alarm off. She swung her legs over the edge of her twin size bed and stretched her arms out the comfortable long sleeved pajama shirt, adorned with a picture of a sleeping orange on it, lifted up exposing her stomach to the chilly air.

Rin shuddered from the sudden cold and quickly lowering her arms again rubbing her upper arms that now also felt the chill. She felt around with her toe for her slippers before slipping them on protecting her from the floor that she figured would also be cold. "Hahh...I forgot to turn the heater on again." She grumbled to herself shuffling her feet to the little heater that worked surprisingly well heating up her tiny studio flat.

Pressing the on button she headed to her tiny but handy kitchen opening up the fridge looking through the contents, looked like it was just going to be eggs again since she could never seem to remember to go to the store until she was out of food completely. As she pulled the carton out she heard a knock at the door. Rin paused as she looked at it not moving to it being silent until she heard a familiar voice calling out to her, "Rin, hurry up and open the door its freezing."

Oh, it was just Mayu.

Rin went to the door opening it up wide regrettably letting the chilly air burst into her flat as Mayu quickly side stepped in then took ahold of the door for Rin and shut it herself trying to keep the heat that had just started filling the flat stay, "Its pretty cold in here too" Mayu chastised, the bottom part of her face covered up by her frilly black jacket that had the collar flipped to cover her face.

Rin smiled a bit, "It'll be hot later in the afternoon, you won't have to suffer in the cold much longer." she gave Mayu a light tap on the nose before going back to her kitchen, "Do you want some eggs too?"

"Do you even have time to make eggs? Didn't you get my texts?" Mayu inquired pulling her long ashy blond hair out of her jacket so it stopped making her neck itch and slipping her platformed mary jane style shoes off to keep from dirtying Rin's floor.

"Yea? Why wouldn't I?" Rin asked pausing with a pan in hand.

"Uh...because you still need to hand in your assignment to Professor Gakupo? Or at least put it in his drop box before 9." Mayu replied raising a delicate eyebrow up.

Rin looked at her then gave a slow nod and put the pan back down and slid the carton back in the fridge, "right...uh I totally remembered that."

"..Sure you did, hurry and get dressed we need to go." Mayu said shaking her head.

Rin glanced at the time then all but scrambled to her wardrobe after seeing the time- Mayu did NOT come over early enough to save her from rushing if that had been her intention. Leaning against the wall her feet positioned in front of the heater warming her frozen toes as she watched Rin strip down and tug a cream sweater and navy skirt on. "It's a bit cold for a skirt" Mayu commented.

"I'm going to wear tights" Rin replied shuffling around for a pair before she found it and stepped in to one of the feet- her foot caught and she yelped getting off balance and falling over onto the floor hitting her funny bone. Rin curled up "Owwwwiiiiie" She made a pained sound making the 'ie' sound to elicit some sympathy from Mayu- who had started laughing immediatly.

No sympathy for her.

"You're so clumsy Rin honestly, I would be in a bad mood if you weren't so funny to watch" Mayu giggled as Rin sat on the floor rubbing the hurt spot then continuing to pull her tights up.

"Yeah yeah I'm ready now" Rin huffed out standing back up picking a navy cardigan up that matched her skirt oddly well considering that they were bought separately and pulling it on then picking her bag up.

"Alright lets go" Mayu said going back towards the door reclasping her shoes as Rin slipped her own on.

Mayu waited semi patiently as Rin locked her door before Mayu pulled Rin's arm pulling her along walking quickly. "You're going to be late dropping you're essay off" she said looking at her rather cute phone.

"Then lets run come on" Rin said immediately picking up the pace going to a comfortable jog to get to her campus in time, "You're so slow come on" Rin called over her shoulder at Mayu who was speed walking refusing to run in her shoes lest she scuff them to badly.

Mayu sent Rin a glare, which she only knew since Mayu's glares bore through anyone's back.

Oops, Mayu was mad.

Mayu collapsed into one of the column seats dropping her book bag besides her, "You're so lucky that I care about your grades more then you." Mayu grumbled, out of breath still from speed walking all the way her.

"Awh come on you didn't even run" Rin said smiling teasingly at her.

"Shush." Mayu scolded.

Rin laughed lightly as she sat beside her once Mayu scooted over allowing her in, "Really though, you should make sure you pay attention to the time, what would you do if I didn't come over? You don't even check your phone." Mayu lightly scolded.

"Sorry Mom" Rin replied, "I would probably just stay home and come up with an excuse."

"And not see your precious Len?"

"...Good point"

Mayu was the only person that knew that Rin had a devastatingly long one sided crush on Len- she had sworn never to tell anyone when Rin had begged her not to after Mayu had seen the childish doodles of Lens name in hearts; of course that didn't mean that she wouldn't tease her for it when it was just them.

Just then Len Kagamine walked in to student lobby, he looked somewhat stricken his handsome face had a forlorn look casted over it, his hair even looked a bit tussled despite being tied back.

"...? What's wrong with him?" Mayu asked seeing Rin gazing at him and following it, confused by his expression.

"I'm not really sure..." Rin started then glanced over seeing 2 girls she shared some classes with stand up from a tables set up for students across from the column seating and head over to intercept Len.

Rin stood suddenly, "Hey where-" Mayu began but Rin was already walking over as well either to also intercept or at least listen to what they talked about.

"Hey Len, I'm sorry for asking but have you heard anything about Neru?" One of the girl's with long teal hair asked, Miku.

Len hesitated, looking at the two. He looked like he really wanted to say something but couldn't. "I..." He began.

"Did the police contact you too?" the other girl interrupted, a girl with a rather alternative cut with green hair loudly inquired, Gumi.

Len stopped again before he nodded his head, "I can't really say what they talked to me about." he said sounding apologetic.

He looked stressed and upset, Rin saw Miku had started to gradually reach for his arm or hand wanting to console him. As soon as she saw this Rin stepped alongside Len and took ahold of his arm lightly, offering him a comforting smile when he looked down at the shorter girl holding his arm lightly, "Hey Len...are you feeling okay? You look upset."

Len lifted his hand putting it over Rin's hand that rested on his arm, "I'm...fine Rin thank you for your concern...I actually need to get going though." He said giving her a soft sad smile.

Rin gave his arm a light squeeze before she let go, "you can talk to me whenever you need to, you know that." She said seriously, her eyebrows knitted up in concern. Was he really that upset? He couldn't have liked Neru that much.

Miku and Gumi were gaping at her, most likely for butting into their conversation. Len gave them all a nod before he stepped around them and started walking away probably to his first class...one that Rin and he didn't share much to her begrime.

Rin looked at the other two, "What happened? You sound like you know what's going on" she inquired looking at them with her big doe eyes.

"Ah well..." Miku began then hesitated- she didn't want to say anything.

Rin looked at Gumi instead then, "Gumi? D o you know what's going on with him? I'm really worried." She pried further, knowing that Gumi was the type of person that couldn't keep secrets from people that she liked.

"Neru's missing." Gumi blurted out.

"..Missing? really? Are you sure?" Rin asked eyes widening in feign shock a hand going up to cover her mouth.

Miku shot Gumi a look; which she ignored and gave a sad nod, "Yeah, She never came home 2 nights ago, I wasn't really worried about it until Len contacted Teto asking where Neru was and if she was okay...we freaked out and started calling around but no one had seen her so we reported her missing."

"Is that why you called me yesterday?" Rin asked lowering her hand and holding it to her chest instead, she played the part of worried shocked girl well.

"Yeah...sorry I didn't tell you what was going on then but we were just trying to call everyone that we could." Gumi said, now looking guilty.

Miku spoke up finally, "There's actually more to it...once we reported and convinced the police to take it seriously they immediately questioned Len and now there are rumors going around.."

"What? Rumors? About what? Neru just went missing and Len doesn't have anything to do with it right?" Rin immediately questioned, what rumors? Why hadn't she heard anything?

"It's just random speculation but...people are saying that anyone that gets close to Len end up going missing." Miku admitted, for someone that didn't want to say something at first she sure was being upfront now.

Rin shook her head, "what? Why would anyone say that about him? So something bad happened but it's not like this happens all the time- they're just going to end up hurting him with baseless rumors."

"I know but ever since that thing happened with-" Gumi began but stopped short as Mayu came up finally getting too nosey to stay in her seat trudging over with the both of their bags.

"What's up?" She asked tilting her head looking at all of them one by one before finally looking up at Rin nudging her foot with hers obviously wanting to know what they had been what probably looked like some 'serious gossiping'.

"Oh...nothing really um! I need to get headed to my singing lessons!" Miku said saving her and by proxy Gumi from having to answer Mayu.

She was obviously feeling guilty talking about it know.

"Oh...yea sure. I'll talk to you guys later." Mayu said as Gumi and Miku interlocked arms and quickly started walking away.

"Well that was super weird." Mayu commented still looking at Rin with probing eyes still wanting to know what happened.

Rin nodded her her head, not necessarily agreeing with Mayu but agreeing with herself over the fact that this was a mess.

There were rumors about Len? How could they do that to him? Sure if there were rumors about people getting hurt if they get close to him then that would be better for her, she could become his only companion! But...that would only end up causing him pain and loneliness and she couldn't bare that- not until she knew that she could give him everything he wanted.

After all, Rin owed Len that much.

Update for chapter 2 complete

A change I made was making them college students- so reading ahead of this point and seeing them referred to as highschool students will be weird until I update the other chapters too.
