Chapter 7: Snow and Memories
"Okay dad, I will. Love you too…" Lucy stared at her phone as she hung up and sighed. It was almost that time of the year again huh?
The days had started getting shorter as well as colder, especially colder. It had almost snowed the other day but it just turned out to be sleet. Lucy glanced out her window, looking at the dull gray sky before she started getting dressed for school.
"Hey, is it just me or has Lucy been seeming a little gloomy lately?" Lisanna asked Levy and Natsu as they stared at her friend in the library. She was quiet and she kept picking up the same book before placing it down again, sighing afterwards.
Natsu shrugged. "Nah, she probably just ate something bad." Levy and Lisanna glared at him. "Ugh. Men will never be able to understand women." Levy sighed to herself as Lisanna nodded in agreement while they looked at Natsu in disappointment.
"What?" Lisanna stared at him like he was stupid. "During situations like these, you're supposed to be a gentleman and ask her what's wrong. Duh." Natsu scoffed, shuffling his scarf on his neck before he slowly obliged. "Man, you girls act like we're supposed to know this shit."
"You are." They said together before getting shushed by the librarian.
Natsu walked up to the shirt blonde, her back facing him. He watched in amusement when she picked the same book up again after she had put it down. Swiftly, before she could even blink, he reached over her shoulder and snatched the book. Lucy gasped, turning around to find out who the thief was.
"Natsu, give it back!" She whisper yelled. Natsu stared at the book she was desperately trying to grab from him but her efforts were futile. "Why should I if you're not even gonna open the damned thing?" Lucy grumbled, standing on her toes but Natsu just lifted the book higher.
"Hmm, what's so great about this book anyway? It seems pretty boring." Lucy gasped at him, an angry shock on his face. "How do you not know this book!? This is a brilliant book made by a brilliant author, you're absurd!" Lucy yelled before quieting down in embarrassment as people began to stare and the librarian shushed them this time.
"But if it's so good, why haven't you even opened it?" Lucy stopped her attempts to grab the book, making Natsu lift a brow. "It just brings back memories." A small smiled graced her lips. "Memories?" Lucy gave him and annoyed look before she huffed, grabbing her bag.
"Nothing, you're so nosy." Natsu scowled at her, placing the book on the table and followed her as they walked back over to Levy and Lisanna. "I wouldn't have asked if you didn't bring it up though." Lucy simply ignored him as the group began walking out of the library.
"Hahh? What do you mean you can't come with us to the movies Saturday?" Gray asked in bewilderment. Lucy gave him an apologetic smile as she put on her coat. "Sorry, it's just that I have somewhere I need to be that day." Erza glanced up at the blonde from her cheesecake.
"You can't skip out or anything?" Lucy chuckled, shaking her head. "Nope, this day only comes once a year." Juvia gave her a confused look. "But Christmas is still a month away." Lucy sighed. "Christmas isn't this Saturday."
"Well, I have to get home so I can study anyways." She smiled as she wrapped her scarf around her neck and grabbing the rest of her stuff. "But we literally just got here like five minutes ago." Gray whined. "Quit your complaining, we can always do this tomorrow. See ya." She waved to them as she walked out of the café. A few minutes later, the rest of the crew arrived.
"You guys are late." Erza simply stated as Jellal sat down next to her, giving her an apologetic peck on the cheek. "Practice was long today because of our upcoming game. And why didn't you come Gray." Gajeel glared at him as he simply just shrugged, leaning back in his seat. "Eh, didn't feel like it."
"Where's Lucy?" Natsu asked, looking for a familiar hint of blonde in the café. "Just missed her, she went home to go study. You guys didn't pass by her coming here? Her home's down the street you guys just came from." Levy shook her head. "No, we didn't see her at all."
Gray placed his hand on his chin, "Huh… That's strange." Natsu looked out the window, thinking to himself about what she had said to him earlier that day.
'Just brings back memories.' What memories could she be talking about?
Lucy pointed to the bouquet of flowers in the book by the florist. "Do you think you guys could have this order in by Saturday?" The young florist pondered for a moment before smiling and nodding. "Why of course, the earliest it can be shipped in by is twelve." Lucy nodded, prepaying the lady, "and who are we naming this out to?" Lucy smiled, "Oh, uh-no. I'll come by to pick it up, just put my name down for it please." The florist eyed her quizzically, shrugging and penning her name down on the list of orders.
"Okay! Well have a nice day mam." The florist smiled as Lucy left the little flower shop.
The day was finally here, Lucy got out of bed, bathing and dressed up nicely, putting on a pink dress and wore a white jacket and scarf over it. She headed out of her apartment and down the street to the little flower shop.
"Man, I can't believe Lu-chan can't come, what a bummer." Gajeel smirked at the tiny bookworm, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. "But you have me." Levy sighed. "It's just not the same." Lisanna looked around ignoring the heartbroken man behind her as he whined to Levy.
"Natsu's late again."
Lucy walked with a big bouquet of flowers in her hands, watching her breath fog in the cold air. She walked for what seemed like ages through the town bustling with people.
"Hey honey, wanna take a ride with us?" Some thugs walked up behind her, she merely groaned as she ignored them. "Aye ya'll, she a feisty one aye?" The men behind her laughed as they started to pick up their pace on her when they saw she was trying to get away.
"Hey, we jus' wanna talk, if ya know what I mean." One of them grabbed her arm and she yanked it away, turning to yell at them. "Keep your hands off me! I'm busy, go fool around with someone else!" She was getting really annoyed and failed to notice she had gotten them angry.
"Hey now shawty, we was just tryin' to be nice but if you wanna play us like that then we can too." Another one said as he put his hand on her shoulder. Lucy clenched her teeth, her grip on her flowers tightening. "I just said-"Another hand grasped the man's hand that was on her shoulder.
"She just said to let go." His hand clenched the thug's and he squealed in shock. Lucy turned to her savior. "Natsu?" Natsu pushed the man to the ground, putting Lucy behind him. The other two guys stared at their companion on the ground before glaring up at Natsu.
"Hey now, you tryna fight?" The one on the right said. Natsu just crossed his arms and watched as the two men approached him. "Just try me, I can whoop both of your asses-"Natsu's words came to a stop when Lucy started dragging him away quickly. The three men behind them bickering insulting words. Natsu whipped his head back around to Lucy, "Hey! I totally had those guys back there!" Lucy frowned at him.
"Nobody is getting in a fight with anyone today, okay!? Today was supposed to be a peaceful day but you had to just come out of nowhere and screw it up." Natsu stared at her in shock. "Hey! If I hadn't budded in just a second ago back there, who knows what those guys would've done." Lucy sighed, glancing over her shoulder at him, she noticed she was till holding on to him and let go.
"We were in the middle of a big crowd. You really think they would've done something to me in front of all those people?" Natsu's shoulders slumped as he thought about it. "Oh." The two walked in silence for a moment as they started to get to the more quiet and peaceful suburbs, walking past a little lake and park.
"Shouldn't you be at the movies?" Lucy asked, not bothering to look over to him. Natsu shrugged, his hands behind his head. "Eh, I would've been late anyways, plus I wasn't just gonna leave you like that." Lucy smiled, looking down at her flowers. Natsu watched her, then looked at the arrangement.
"Who are those for?"
"My mom." She said it so simply, Natsu would never have thought they'd end up in a cemetery. He stood behind her as she kneeled down, placing the bouquet on her mother's grave, then making a little prayer. Feeling awkward, Natsu kneeled down, making a little prayer as well.
"You're the first person I've ever brought to my mom's grave. You should feel honored." Lucy joked, Natsu chuckled as they just kneeled there. "The other day, when you said that one book brought you memories, were you talking about your mom?" Lucy nodded, "yeah… I don't know why I was making it so much of a big deal. I'm just not used to talking to people about my mom is all."
"How did she… You know." Lucy glanced over to him, giving him a helpless smile.
"Die?" Natsu nodded awkwardly, looking at her grave.
"Uh, yeah."
"We got into a car accident when I was five, it was a direct hit, I was in the back so I survived with some injuries. My father would be here too if he wasn't on a business trip on the other side of the world." It was quiet and Natsu immediately began to feel guilty for asking.
"Sor-"
"Don't be," Lucy began as she stood up and stretched, Natsu soon following. "It feel nice to talk to someone about it… Ah." A tiny snowflake landed on the blonde's nose, chilling her as it melted.
"It's snowing?" Natsu smiled in excitement. He wasn't exactly a fan of the cold but when it came to snow, he became a child. He turned his head to see if Lucy held just as much excitement as he did until he came to a stop.
Her face was creamy white while her nose and cheeks were rosy red. Her eyes sparkled and her smile was dazzling and the way the light was shining on her made her look like… An angel. Lucy caught him staring and lifted a brow, an amused grin on her face.
"What?" Natsu turned his head and shrugged. "I was just gonna say you looked like an ogre just then." Lucy gave an annoyed huff and crossed her arms as the two began to leave the cemetery.
"Hey, so how about a movie?"
