Thank you so much for all the reviews! I love reading each and every one of them
I'm going to try and focus more on Alicia and Will now…I'm sorry that I digressed a bit in previous chapters. Enjoy!
Chapter 15
As Alicia waited anxiously for Cary to show up, she started fiddling with the pens on her desk. For the first time in a while, she was unsure about what to do.
On one hand, she could just tell Will what she found out. They had agreed, as lawyers in a divorce case, that they would find out what was going on between their clients.
But Will was an opposing attorney, not an assisting one. It would be disadvantaging her client.
Thinking of Will brought back the memory of her fight with Josephine in Will's apartment kitchen. She had said I love him. Out loud. She couldn't hide her feelings anymore, even though she was still married to Peter. Oh God, Alicia thought, How on earth did I manage to get myself into this?
She didn't want Lacie to get wrapped up in more legal issues because she was having another baby that her husband didn't know about, but if she didn't tell Will, then Florrick/Agos could be sued for lack of full disclosure of information. She loved being a lawyer, but sometimes things just got a little too complicated for her liking.
Alicia cared about Lacie's wellbeing, but she also cared about Will. And she didn't want this crazy divorce case getting in the way of their mending their relationship. Or friendship. Or wannabe relationship.
Unless she could get herself off the case.
If she transferred the case to another firm, she wouldn't have to deal with the awkwardness of the case and potentially hurting Will. Problem solved. She just had to check with Cary. She hoped that he wouldn't be much longer, because she had agreed to meet Peter for dinner.
"Alicia," she heard a familiar voice say, "Sorry I'm late." She looked up to see Cary wearing a navy suit, with a tie that looked like it had been tied in a hurry. "So what's happened with the Karinsky case?"
After briefing Cary on what had happened at LG and when she had talked to Lacie alone, Cary sighed. "God, I'm sorry. I didn't know that it would have gone that far."
"How could you have known that Lacie was carrying another baby? And that she hadn't told her husband?"
"I guess you just never know sometimes, do you?"
"No, you don't," Alicia admitted. "But, I've realized that I can't continue with the case. Lexington Firms, Inc., has already agreed to replace me."
"Why? Because if this is about Will, then you're doing the wrong thing."
"Cary, I'm the boss of my relationships, not you, okay?"
Cary sighed, then said, "Yes ma'am. Do you want to call Lacie or shall I?"
"I will," Alicia replied immediately. "I was with her today at LG, after all."
"Fair point. Good luck with that conversation."
Alicia mouthed 'Thanks' as she dialed Lacie's number. It went to voicemail, so she left a message.
"Hi Lacie, it's Alicia Florrick from Florrick Agos and Associates. I just wanted to know that I'm very sorry, but my firm will be unable to continue with your case. However, I have already contacted Lexington Firms and they would be happy to continue with your case. You can give them a call at 714-345-9845. Let me know if you have any questions, and I apologize that I can't continue with this case. Goodbye."
Alicia sat down at the table Eli had reserved for her and Peter at a high end Italian restaurant in Chicago. Since Peter had not yet arrived, she ordered herself a glass of wine. Peter was so late that by the time he showed up, Alicia was already drinking her second glass. Will would never be late, Alicia thought to herself. Stop thinking about Will, she told herself, You're married to Peter. Not Will.
"Sorry I'm late," Peter said as he hung his coat around his chair. He was still dressed in a nice suit from work. "The joys of meetings that run overtime."
Alicia smiled, albeit mildly. "It's no big deal. I know all about meetings running overtime."
"This your first glass? You could have ordered food without me."
"This is my second glass, Peter. And if I had ordered food, I would probably be almost done eating it by now because you're so late."
"What is up with you? You seem a lot more ancy lately. Is this something to do with Will?"
"Would it make a difference if I told you that it did?"
"Yes, it would, since you have previously slept with him and I know that you still have feelings for him."
"Peter!" Alicia said in a hushed tone. "We are in a public restaurant. Do you really want to ruin your public image by talking about me and Will here? There could be a reporter here."
Peter sighed, scanned the room, and then apologized. "I'm sorry, Alicia. It's been tired and I've had a long day."
"Please don't forget that I've had a long, tiring day as well," Alicia said slyly. She could feel the tensions building between them – she was just worried about when it might boil over and cause disaster.
"I'm the governor of Illinois!"
"I'm the First Lady! And a full-time lawyer! Do you think that I just have tons of free time on my hands? Because I don't!" Alicia realized that her voice was getting loud, and cleared her throat as the waiter came by to take their orders. Once the food arrived, they both ate in silence, only uttering "goodbye" to one another as they exited the restaurant in opposite directions.
