Chapter 16

"You'll be at the meeting at 10am tomorrow, right?"

"Yes, yes, I will, don't you worry."

"Alright, just checking."

"What do you mean, Cary? I wasn't the one who decided to take a sick day," Alicia replied suspiciously.

"I guess you're right," Cary admitted, "Good night, Alicia."

"Good night, Cary," Alicia replied, and then hung up the phone. She put her cell phone down on the kitchen table, and as she was pulling out a new bottle of red wine, a knock sounded on the door. She hesitated, now remembering that she had invited anyone over. Zach and Grace were at Peter's for the weekend, and she certainly wasn't having a cocktail party with colleagues.

She walked over to the door, and did a double take when she saw who was on the other side of the door.

Will.

What? Alicia thought to herself as she opened the door. "Hi," she said, trying to smile. "What brings you here?"

"Well, I bought some beer and since you brought cake over to my apartment that one time I felt like I owed you," he replied with a smile, holding up a six pack of Budweiser.

Alicia smiled back, happy to have company. "Well then, come in," she said, clearing the doorway. "Thanks," he replied. She shut the door behind him and said, "Let me take your coat."

"No problem, just hold this," he said, giving Alicia the beer as he hung up his coat. She directed him to the kitchen, and he sat down at one of the chairs at the island.

A few beers later, Will and Alicia were chatting and laughing about different funny moments in their respective lives when Will commented, "So, Diane told me that you've withdrawn from the Karinsky case."

Alicia nearly spat out the beer in her mouth. After she managed to swallow, she replied, "What? Where'd she hear that?"

"Our client heard from his wife that she had been asked to switch lawyers. Her lawyers are now at Lexington."

Alicia cleared her throat and replied, "Yes, that is true."

"Why did you switch? I mean, it wasn't getting awkward, was it?"

Alicia hesitated. She felt freer now, so she figured that she should tell him. "Look, you know how we made the agreement to figure out what was going on with Lacie and her husband?" Will nodded, and she continued, "So I found out, and I was torn between protecting her and abiding by our agreement to figure it out. But now that I'm not on the case, I guess I could act as an advisor."

Will leaned a little closer to Alicia, and said, "Well, what's going on then? Come on, you want to help me, right?"

Alicia took another swig of beer, and said, "Lacie and her husband wanted the divorce because she had a miscarriage sometime in the past."

"Okay, but that doesn't explain Lacie's anxiousness around Frank," Will replied.

"Give me a second, I was getting to that," Alicia replied, putting her beer down on the table. "Lacie's pregnant again. And she hasn't told her husband."

Now it was Will's turn to nearly spit beer all over the counter. "What?" he said, stunned.

"Like I said, she's hiding it from him."

"But why?"

"I guess if he doesn't know, then she won't have to fight with him over custody rights," Alicia replied.

"I see," Will replied.

"And just to make things between our firms slightly more complicated than they already are," Alicia said, changing the subject, "I have discovered that Cary and Kalinda are back together."

Will paused, and then said. "Great. Let's hope they don't screw either of us over."

"Don't worry, I've already made clear to Cary that he can't screw up."

"Oh really now?"

"Let's just say I wasn't happy with him," Alicia said.

They both paused to take a few more sips of their drinks, and Alicia started to get off her stool so she could throw away the empty beer bottles on the table. Except, she stumbled on her way to the floor.

"Oh hey, hang on," Will said, grabbing her shoulders a split second before she hit the floor. Now on his feet, he helped Alicia to her feet, and asked, "You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine," she replied, realizing how close their faces were. She suddenly felt all her feelings for Will coming up to the surface as she made eye contact with him, and she went ahead and kissed him.

Will kissed back, and after a little while they were practically making out next to the kitchen table. Alicia let herself forget all her obligations for the next day, and she pulled Will towards her room.
