Summary: Story 7:"Lin, hehehe, that's very sly but you do know that I don't believe a word you just said, I know that you are paid to relay such saucy information to me and that you think that Mai and Naru are made for each other material... but the thing you just told me is beyond imagination you know...I never knew you were so desperate as to -" Mori Madoka.
-MADOKA-
"Lin?! Please, hahaha don't joke around with me, Heaven's! You do know we're talking about Noll here, don't you?"
Flabbergasted and gaping didn't even cover the rampage of thoughts that was going in my head as I tried to picture Noll actually – and Lin over here was messing with my heart telling me such incredulous things. Luella eyed me skeptically and all I could do was stare at her, my mouth hanging open and concentrating on nothing as both of us drove to the airport to receive Noll and Lin.
"Lin, hehehe, that's very sly but you do know that I don't believe a word you just said, I know that you are paid to relay such saucy information to me and that you think that Mai and Naru are made for each other material... but the thing you just told me is beyond imagination you know...I never knew you were so desperate as to -"
Now Luella was completely instigated to eavesdrop on our conversation when she heard the mention of her son and a girl in one sentence, I swear I saw Luella's ears perk up while Martin eyed her, amused. So for her convenience, I put the cell phone on loudspeaker and Lin's annoyed voice cackled across the weak line.
"Madoka...please be serious, what I told you is hundred percent authentic information. He really did that and for a moment." He paused and his muffled voice chuckled. "I thought he was possessed..."
"What did Noll do?" Luella shouted on the phone alarmed and unaware of anything. "Lin tell me, is my son is alright?"
"Davis-san" Lin sighed, irritated as he weighed the chances of himself escaping after this piece of gossip. "Noll is perfectly fine, he just did something that made me quite unsure -"
"What?!"
I gently pushed Luella aside, nodding reassuringly and resumed the conversation, knowing that I had missed the biggest scene of the millennium.
"Are you sure Gene didn't possess him or anything else like that?"
"No my shiki didn't sense a thing. It was Noll alright, ask anyone else, everybody was there..."
Okay, now this didn't make sense...
Imagine Noll, a girl and something cheesy combine to form a single sentence. Ridiculous, unbelievable yet a strange hope invades the situation, I felt proud to say that I had lived to see Oliver acting his age.
"Will somebody tell me what sin my son committed? Madoka!"
Luella was almost slipping off the car's seat so I smiled at her and put a comforting hand on her shoulder. Losing Gene and seeing his body again today had subdued Luella greatly, the tragedies had worn her out and were showing themselves as frowns, frequent illness and depression. One of her sons was dead, and the other one was figuratively dead from the heart, so she had almost left hope of happiness, although I've tried but distances from her only living son hurt her and today when Noll is returning from Japan, a slight glimmer is lighting her eyes. She is happy...
"Call you later Lin, thanks for the news. I feel so fresh now...ah, you gave me another black-mailing tip."
I hung up on him and turned to Luella, who was glancing apprehensively at me, I then burst up laughing happily as I explained the situation to her.
Noll was like a son to me, that sulking kid that needs to be pushed in the sunshine, that brat who would have brains and looks but no feelings. He was that kind of child, aloof, reserved, strangely silent but no matter what I still loved him like a son, some relative that needs to be taken special care of. And now when he has finally manned up enough and done something worth recording in history text-books, I feel myself uniquely elated, this had been my number one mission since I dissected Noll's personality and Luella's living aim. Although hers was more related to grand children rather than anything else.
And oh! How I miss Gene, that kid was the only person who intelligently put up with my schemes and even dared to be like me other than Yasu. Getting involved in relationships was a matter of winking for Eugene Davis, everything about him was lovely and girls; the stupid yet beautiful ones readily fell for him. But Noll, ah Lord even getting him to talk something else than the theories of the supernatural was like making diamonds out of coal, naturally getting befriended to girls was a double no hope for him and now, I think there is a slight chance.
There was hope for him, as long as Mai lived, as long as somebody made him feel wanted; there was hope...
"Do you remember Taniyama Mai?" I asked Luella who scrunched up her face to wrack her memory.
"Taniyama, Mai." She muttered to herself, humming to God knows what until she clicked her fingers and turned to me, enlightened. "You mean that cute, charming Japanese girl who I met in Japan...Noll's assistant right?"
"Bingo!" I grinned, holding up a finger. "And did I ever mention the fact that Noll was positively smitten with the dear girl?"
Luella's blue pupils contracted to nothing but blue dots as she too gaped at the sentence I had just muttered. Trying to recover, Luella cleared her throat and continued.
"You mean our Noll likes her?"
"Yes! And do you know what the great thing is?"
Luella was like a spell-bound child who had found some fantasy come true as she shook her head in a no giving me the cue to continue.
"She loves him back, I've never seen Noll so interested in any other woman ever before but you should see the way he deals with Mai-chan and how she backs him down, gets him to agree and how she doesn't give a damn thing to his looks but gives her whole heart to his well-being."
"Eh? My Noll is going to get married! Ahh!"
"Luella, I -"
Marriage?! Hey wait...they haven't even dated yet, God knows if they have even confessed to each other. Luella was always a far-sighted person...to be honest she was embarrassingly far-sighted. No one knew what she cooked inside that brain of hers, she could possibly be thinking about anything that had to be embarrassing for the subject she thought about. At this point I reckoned it would be Noll, Mai, wedding cakes and chubby, brown eyed, black haired grandchildren, going around in Luella's mind.
"And I would have a chubby grand kid who I would play with all day long, I'd paint the baby's nursery, buy him soooo many clothes and make sure that-"
See...the hope of a mother's heart...
Martin then decided to burst the bubble that was inflating inside the fan-girl corner of Luella's heart.
"Madoka, based on these grounds, it could just be an infatuation, she was an impressive girl but I always thought Noll was just a friend...they may be just friends if you look at it like that."
Friends...pssh, give me a break. That's the best way to ruin a romantic story-line...there's nothing 'friendly' about Mai Taniyama and Oliver Davis, nor is it a cheesy story being cooked between them; they are just two opposite poles who met at some point and found satisfaction in one similar thing, the paranormal.
No matter how creepy and unromantic that interest is...
"Martin, when Noll comes back, we should observe him and if he does something out of habit then you should talk to him about this." Luella turned to her husband, her pale hands clasped together, looking absolutely enchanted, Martin nods and I smile widely. I've never seen Luella so happy, so full of life; it's a joy to see her returning back to life after Gene's death.
It was a fateful day when I first entered the Davis household, not to mention in a ragged condition, dripping wet and being carried by Lin. But the story here requires a long, long background.
Actually I was a transfer student at Cambridge, Martin taught Parapsychology over there and for starters I had no interest in the subject, it was a stupid job messing around with ghosts when humans could do something more productive. That's when I met Koujo Lin, the coolest person, the most arrogant boy in the Uni and one of those non-friendly people who are mostly avoided by normal humans. Me, being the alien I was, decided to at least know him a bit; my attempts to befriend him ended in complete disaster and the creepy, silent treatment of his provoked me to hate him, dislike him from the core of my heart. It didn't help that I was in most classes of his and we had tough competition over grades – although he always scored ahead.
Rivalry and dislike ripened on both sides and triggered when I decided to join Parapsychology on the whim of defeating Lin in something he was good at and then bragging it around. I still remember the day when I entered the class and he shot me that annoyed look, every body else was gaping too; they all knew of my dislike for paranormal but I ignored it all, at that time the main aim was defeating Lin. Also I came to know that Lin worked as private tutor to the Professor's adopted son and my fire of hatred fueled to see him being offered such a prestigious job, so I tried even harder to put him down. Alas, that never happened but one day my paradigms for Lin went through a transition...his intentions became clear and I joined the Davis family; almost as a member.
It was raining, I was just going to my rented apartment after classes with a severe cold combined with sickness and dizziness and by chance he was passing by and spotted me in my thoroughly desperate condition. I was a poor girl, need I emphasize; all my studies were on scholarship and I also tried to get on with life without imposing on my frail parents too much, so naturally my apartment was shabby and almost out of resources. I did not visit a doctor since at that time I was sure I could face challenges and normal fevers on my own and this bravery of mine ended with me fainting in the rain, on the road. The rest of the story is a blur, honestly, I just remember Lin carrying me and hailing a taxi, presumably to the Davis house since that was where he was living at that time and then carrying me to the house.
Martin and Luella were the kindest souls, they treated me so generously and Luella seemed like some big nee-chan I didn't have. Lin, apparently narrated the tale of my poor condition and Martin decided to employ me as Gene's instructor and I became a part of them (not to mention rich, hehehe). It was an accident but it changed my life and intertwined me with people I have loved ever since, even Lin; even though he shows no sign of reciprocating my sincere feelings whatsoever. And since then...well I have used my plotting mind to subdue Noll and make him do as I say, black-mailing him with silly pictures that he believes will destroy his reputation, hehehe. As if, my materials and brains will ever run out...
Coming back to the present, I spotted the air-port finally coming near and saw that Luella had still not quietened down and was mentally sending invitations for Noll's wedding or designing Mai's wedding gown in her imagination, she always had a creative taste, Martin was amused to the peak and chuckled when Luella considered the fact that Noll may be bringing Mai with him...that's impossible really. I can only imagine what will happen now, Lin (who is extremely scared of Noll's PK) just told me the minor details of the farewell but I needed to see what had they said to each other before parting. That's the only way I'll come to know if I ever have to send wedding cards around the Davis families, or if I have to design wedding gowns. For now I think I'll just slacken my leash on poor Noll.
"Noll!"
Luella was ecstatic as soon as she spotted him exiting the terminal gates, he seemed fine and fit but Luella's eyes were brimming with tears as she pounced (please excuse my vocabulary) on Noll, hugging him and kissing his forehead relentlessly. I simply patted his shoulders and moved to my comrade, Lin.
"Lin, I'm happy to see you..." I had really seen him after a long while, and I had missed plotting out embarrassments for Noll. Ah! Now that he's back, it's like New Year has arrived and I'll make new resolutions to tease Nollie.
"Me too Madoka." He merely nodded and we both turned to see Luella fawning over her son.
"Oh Noll, I'm so happy dear!" Luella was crying now. "I'm so happy."
Noll looked around himself consciously and spotted a few people staring at the emotions Luella was going through and Noll for the first time looked as if he could care less. He simply nodded at Luella and moved on to Martin, who grasped his hand and patted his back. And then he came over to me...
"I heard you made quite a soap opera at the Japanese air-port." I snickered and a light smirk lit up his eyes as he looked away from me, a distant look in his eyes. "Eh, Noll?"
"No...you seem to be mistaken."
"Oh Noll, what did you do to Mai-chan?!" I was screaming with suspense and anticipation, burning inside and Lin simply chuckled. Noll, however raised his eyebrows at me skeptically and then frowned at Lin.
The Chinese was going to get it later...I knew by Noll's murderous look, slicing through Lin's neck in his imagination.
"I don't know what you're talking about Madoka..."
"Mai-chan! What did you say to her?!"
Luella was smiling as the party moved towards the car and Noll simply kept on smirking, now he knew what I wanted and he was going to avenge his earlier embarrassments by not telling me.
"Oh, nothing..." He climbed gracefully in the car and shrugged lightly. "Nothing special at all, Mori-sensei."
Sensei?! What the hell! He never called me sensei or anything like that!
"Noll, you're killing me!" I was bad at handling suspense, especially in romantic stories.
He didn't even blink. He just crossed his arms, stubbornly.
Oh, so he wasn't going to submit to my command, really? Japan must have given him some independence but I ruled his English life, nobody escapes Mori Madoka's wrath and cross-questioning. Not even Oliver Davis who quailed under her mighty brows like a chicken (okay that's an overstatement now, but hey, don't let Noll see this).
Time for technique B.
"Well then, I guess I must tell Luella about that picture in your third drawer." I coughed and turned towards a grinning Luella. "In your study room Noll..."
"What picture?"
His demeanor was already cracking, but what amazed me was that he didn't seem unhappy, sad...to think he isn't miserable when Gene is about to be buried. It confused me, Noll was acting fine; he didn't seem happy but he didn't seem sad...he just seemed tense, confused yet relaxed by something.
"Oh, that one in which you-"
"Madoka." He interrupted me, glaring holes. "Mai simply gave me a gift and said that I should contact her often."
"Yes, she did exactly that." Lin offered, siding with Noll like a hypocrite. "Madoka you needn't worry."
"Well, since you gentlemen aren't going to give me concrete information." I fluffed my hair and turned to them, winking. "I guess I'll have to 'spy'."
They both coughed and I chuckled darkly, schemes were running wild in my mind and the last serious thought that disturbed me before I submitted to making comic plans was that how Noll's personality had changed and there was a small light to him. A charm made him smirk as if he was reminiscing; he was still aloof and he still scowled but he seemed a little relaxed (and I know it's nothing to do with Gene's body being found, there is a girl behind this development) and a little tense. Japan had been good to him, time had been good to him...
Thanks to Mai...Noll had found a new friend, an understanding person, someone to replace Gene, someone to actually trust on; something that Noll didn't do often.
Thanks to Mai, our Noll had found a new light...(and a wife if he would just be sensible and go back propose her, I mean it's been ages since I attended a wedding and Mai-chan would be the perfect wife for our Noll! I can just see those cheeky kids flooding the house...hehehe and the nurseries and the small clothes and the cries and oh...)
Some things never change...
Writer's Block is evil...Phew, Madoka is hard and you have to wrack brains to come up with something that makes sense...and Madoka being poor and all that is MY INVENTION. Oh and yeah I thought Madoka would never be the one to think in histories, describing relationships and all that so I used a simple point. Do review and give me suggestions about Luella whose PoV is up next, since I'm stuck!
Love and happiness,
