I don't take credit for it.
Now I won't bore you with all the weeks pointless things because all we did was went to school, came home and did our homework, or hung out when we could. Ya know, the usual. The girls were more distant than they had been the previous week and this had me a bit worried. They were closer, that was a good thing. But they kept to themselves so much I felt like they kind of forgot about me.
Finally Friday comes along and I couldn't be happier. The week was bizarre. The town was on edge since Alison was found. Then Jenna and Toby are both back in school so it was a bit awkward for most people. The first day Jenna came back the girls let her sit with them for lunch. Which I hadn't even been at their table. They moved to a new table and kind of left me by myself, with the exception of Andrew and the triplets. But it was just getting to me.
Today's lunch period is where my day started off getting annoying. I had gone all week in a pretty great mood. This morning was great too, well kind of. Seeing Mr. Fitz is still weird for me. But I make the best of it. What ruined my day was that Amber decided she was going to try and get a fight out of me no matter what she had to do. I had went to the Brew for lunch since it was such a nice day. But it was a bit surprising when the girls asked to tag along. It's the first time the whole week that they had any interest to hang around me without me trying to put the effort in. After we got our food we headed back to the school and sat at a table in front of the school to hang out. When I was going to throw out my lunch, Amber ended up tripping me. I hadn't even noticed she was around. I hit the cement so hard I feel my lip bust open. Tears filled in my eyes as blood flowed out like a waterfall all over the floor. I felt like I was about to pass out when I saw it.
I look down and see blood all over my clothes. "Dude!" I yell as Aria helps me to my feet.
"Jessie..." But I don't let her finish.
"Don't you have anything better to do?" I could feel my lip swelling up like a balloon.
She smiles. "Oops. My bad Brant."
"What's you're problem?" I hold my hand under my lip, trying to keep the blood from dripping all over me.
"You're my problem. I'm sure we've gone through this plenty of times."
I see the other girls walking over from the corner of my eyes. I turn and Spencer puts a napkin to my lip. I wince from the pain. "Sorry." She says.
"Still getting babied?" Amber says.
I watch her for a second. "No. This is what you call having friends."
"Oh." She puts an evil smile. "I didn't know spicks could have friends."
Incase you don't know, spick is a meaner word for an Spanish speaking person. In their case they like to throw it out there because I'm Latino. They like to make fun of the fact that I don't look Hispanic because they refer to the fact that they are comparing my skin color or eye color, even hair color as not making me look it. Which yes, if you see me I don't look like someone who seems like I know any other language besides English. Unless you know me that well you would never guess I was Hispanic because my skin is so light I could be considered "normal" here. But I've lived here practically my whole life, so everyone knows better.
I watched her for a second. Grasping what she just said. Whoever was around had a more mellow reaction than myself though. They all just gasped and looked at each other. Then when it finally sunk in they all just stared at me as I tried to push the girls aside. "You are such a..." But before I could finish they all grabbed me and held me back.
"Don't." Spencer says.
"Did you not hear what she said!" I lunge forward but they keep me back.
"She's trying to get you upset." Aria continues.
They get me farther away. "I had no idea." I say sarcastically.
"She wants you to fight her remember." Emily adds.
Now Hanna gets in front of me, blocking Amber from my view. She has never really been there when I've gotten hurt or picked on. "Take a breath." She says. I watched her and I could see the worry in her eyes. So I do. I take a deep breath then grab the napkin that Spencer was replacing the other napkin with. It was drenched in blood and I knew if I continued this argument it wouldn't end well. So I turn around and allow the girls to drag me away.
"Such a loser Brant! Going to always let your friends talk you out of fights!"
"Ignore her." Spencer says.
I won't lie. I was pretty pissed. Not only because she called me that, but also the fact that I turned away from her when she was egging me on in front of everyone was embarrassing. When people are around it's practically mandatory to go for it. I didn't want to seem weak but I preferred not to get my nose broken.
We had Art after lunch. My lip stopped bleeding but I couldn't sit in class with a noticeable cut and puffy lip. I was barely able to talk by this point, it was so swollen. So as soon as we walked in the teacher noticed and sent me to the nurse. Aria came with me to make sure I was alright.
"You know you did the right thing." She says as we sat on the bench in front of the Nurses Office, ice pack to my lip.
"She's never going to let it go."
"Maybe not. But that makes you the bigger person." I go to say something. "Don't say the joke about her actually being the bigger person because she's taller."
I start to blush and then laugh. "Well...it's true!"
She smiles. "I'm glad you can still have a sense of humor after what happened."
I shrug. "It's nothing new."
"You shouldn't have to be worried about watching your back every time you're in school."
I look down at my cast. There were a few things written on it from kids in school. "Feel better!" One said. "Give me a call!" Another said and had their number down. Which happened to be Andrew as a joke.
I looked back at her. "I have to watch my back no matter where I am in this town Aria. Amber lives here and I'm not the most likable person in town either."
"Just because you have a Jersey accent and use slang words now?"
I nod. "Apparently." I put up an eyebrow. "Wait...I have an accent?"
She laughs and nods. "It's not that noticeable. Just when you say certain words."
"Oh." She nods. "Awesome. Something else to be made fun of for."
"Don't let it get to you."
"Easier said than done."
"Jessie!" We both jump from the sudden yell of my name and turn.
"Mom?"
"Aunt Ella?" We both get up as she speed walks down the hall.
"What..."
"Nurse called. Said you got hurt." She looks at the ice pack. "What happened?"
"Nothing I'm fine."
She pulls the pack away from my lip. Her face already gave the impression of not believing me. "Doesn't look like nothing."
"Aunt Ella. Why did they call you? The Hastings are my Guardians."
"They put me and Byron as emergency contacts."
"They...they did?" She nods. "So that means they weren't available if you came instead." She looks at me with a bit of sadness in her eyes and nods. I slowly nod myself. "Of course."
"They are busy."
"Always are."
She looks at Aria then back to me. "I'm going to take you home."
"I don't know what home is anymore."
She puts a sad look. "Well I'm going to take you to our house. Which you can always call a home. You practically lived there growing up anyway." She looks back to Aria. "If you want to leave early I'll sign for you as well."
She watches me for a second then nods. "Yea. Okay."
We then wait for Aunt Ella to sign us out, go to our lockers to get our things and head to the Montgomerys house. I was actually grateful for getting out of school early. I was now in a really bad mood and it felt better to be away from here rather than running into Amber again.
The rest of the day wasn't too bad. I chilled with Aria in the family room most of the time. We watched TV while I iced up my lip. It started going down a few hours after getting to their house. Then ate some dinner and went to Spencers' to pick up extra clothes, I was invited to sleep over. That night I went to bed in a good mood, excited for Noels' party the following day.
