Sara Shepard and ABC Family own Pretty Little Liars.
I do not take credit.
"So am I meeting this Alex person you've been talking about?"
"Come on girls, over here!" Veronica yells from across the family room.
Her and Peter were trying to get pictures in before we left. Trust me, this was just as much of a surprise to me. They actually cared enough to stop whatever they were doing for this.
"Yes Jessie." She starts smiling to herself. "He's coming. I promise he's real."
I start laughing. She met a guy at the tennis club her family goes to and I'm always teasing her on whether this guy is imaginary. I've never seen him before so I fool around with her about it all the time.
"Guys." Peter says. "Look this way will you?"
She smiles at me and I try not to laugh again. Then we both turn towards her parents and she puts her arm around my shoulder. She's taller than me to begin with but in heels she's even taller.
Now this whole being girlier than I am thing was really not going well with me. Her and Aria both had to take me to the mall to get a dress because I don't own any. I called it a day however when they tried to get me to buy heeled shoes. So I stuck with flats.
The dress they helped me pick out is light blue that flowed as I walked. It wasn't too short but they made sure it wasn't too long either. Apparently they wanted me to get with the style of clothes girls wear. To my surprise it showed my thin body very well. I wasn't used to that at all. Baggy was more my style and that made everyone forget that I'm skinnier than I appear. Their mouths dropped when they saw me, including myself when I first put it on.
Looking in the mirror before we headed out was for sure not normal. I saw me, but yet I didn't see me. My light red hair was down instead of in the over the shoulder pony tail I always had it in. After Spencer talked me into that idea she straightened out my wavy hair with her flat iron. To top it off she took a piece of my hair from one side to braid it and then pinned it back so it wouldn't fall. Thankfully she didn't bring up makeup because that would have been a for sure no. Plus it probably would have been weird with my glasses anyway.
"Meet you at the dance okay." Spencer is in charge of the dance and has to be there a bit earlier. She's also a little short on students to help out since the flu is going around.
I nod. "Yea. I'll text you when we are on the way." She smiles, hugs me then gets in her car while I continued to walk towards the gate to get to my car.
When I get in I realize that this was the first time in awhile that I would be able to drive with my left hand. Thinking about it didn't feel normal, but gripping both my hands on the wheel really felt weird. I smile to myself a bit as it starts to sink in, then turn on the car and take off.
The Montgomerys were all standing outside when I got there. To my surprise Andrew was there as well. We were supposed to be meeting at the school so I wasn't sure why he was here. Maybe that was still the plan as I noticed the new car he got for his birthday last week was parked in front of mine.
When I turned back to the porch they all caught sight of me and Andrew ran down the steps. I got out and had no time to react as he surprised me with a kiss.
"You look beautiful." He says when he pulls away.
I look up at him. He kept his hands around my waist as he smiled down to me. I couldn't help but smile at how cute he looks in his suit. He stuck with the regular black jacket and pants but his vest and tie match my dress. Even with the sun practically gone the street lights made it seem like his blue eyes were more noticeable than usual behind his glasses. He even got a haircut. It was a bit shorter but not that much shorter than usual.
I get on my tip toes and smooth out his silky hair with my hand, moving his bands to the side. "You look so cute."
I can see him starting to blush. "So do you." He bends down and kisses me again. He looks down at my hands and smiles. Then starts to smooth his thumb slowly back and forth on my cast free hand. "Come on." He says and starts to drag me to the house.
"I thought we were meeting at the school."
"We are but Aria said her parents wanted to take pictures." They have all gotten extremely close pretty quickly. It's only been a few weeks since they met him but they have me bring him over so often that it's as if they have known him forever.
Aria meets me half way down the stairs and hugs me. "They look like they want to kill each other." I could hear in her voice that she was holding back tears.
I look up at them and could tell the tension between them was on edge. "Don't worry. I whisper. "They'll take care of it." She pulls away with as much of a smile she could put and we head up the steps.
Aunt Ella's smile was from ear to ear now. "I told you you would look great. The dress brings out your beautiful green eyes."
I start turning red. "Thanks."
"Okay." Uncle Byron says. "Get together."
First they took one of all three of us with Mike. Then Mike with just me because they had all already took pictures while they waited for me. After that Mike took the camera so both of them could get in and repeated the cycle of a group picture, then just me with them together and individual pictures with me. They didn't stand near each other for the group picture though. Aunt Ella was next to Aria while Uncle Byron stood by me. This was really getting unbearable to watch. After them they took pictures of us two with Andrew. He was in the middle with his arms around us. Then one with just me and him. The first picture was normal but the second was of us kissing. He kind of sprang it on me so I started cracking up after.
"Sorry." He laughs. "I couldn't help it."
I smile. "It's okay. It was cute." He smiles and kisses me again. Man I think I love this kid...uh...is that to soon to say?
"Girls now." I hear Aunt Ella as it brings me back from that thought.
As always, it's hard to get us to take it seriously. Since we were kids we always seem to find something funny and start laughing. Which takes us a good minute or so to stop. But eventually we got it together and were able to take a good picture.
"Okay." Andrew says. "So I have to pick up some of my friends. I'll see you later." He kisses my cheek, hugs Aria and Aunt Ella, shakes Uncle Byron's and Mike's hands then takes off.
"He's such a sweet kid." Aunt Ella says as he drives away.
I smile. "I know. I got lucky."
"That you did kiddo." Uncle Byron says. "I'm still keeping an eye on him though."
I half smile. "Uncle Byron come on."
"Hey. It's my job." He hugs me. "Have fun okay?" I smile and nod. He looks at Aunt Ella. I wasn't sure the look he gave her but it looked decent. Then he looks at Aria and slowly looks back at me. "You're sleeping over tonight?"
"Uhh..."
"My bad." Aria says. "I forgot to ask."
I laugh. "I'll swing by Spencer's after the dance to get my stuff then."
"Hey!" We all turn around and see Hanna across the street walking from her house with Sean. Noel and who I could guess was his date were right there with them.
We both smile. "Hey Han." Aria says.
"Pictures!" We hear Hanna's mom yell. Man did she have a loud voice.
"Good idea!" Aunt Ella yells back and heads down the stairs with Uncle Byron right behind her.
I look at Aria and she smiles. "No harm done."
"I really hate taking pictures."
"Then you're going to the wrong place." She laughs. "That's what usually happens for a dance."
"I know but this is not the prom."
"Close enough."
I growl to myself and she laughs. "Oh come on. Stop being a party pooper." She wraps her arm between mine and drags me to down the steps. As we got closer Hanna had that look like she was trying to hide a smile. I wasn't sure if it was because I had the "I don't want to" face or because she knows how I hate when people make a big deal about me looking different.
Sean whistles. "Looking good Jessie."
I can feel my face burning up now. "Thanks Sean." I say shyly.
"Yea Brant." Noel comes into view next to him. "Didn't recognize you for a second there. Andrew's a lucky man." Now I could feel my face getting really hot.
"Okay. Okay. Everyone back it up before she passes out." Hanna comes to my rescue. She winks. "Don't be so embarrassed."
"I-I'm not."
She smiles. "Coulda fooled me."
Aria laughs. "Take a deep breath will you? You look like you're going to be sick."
"This was a bad idea." I say.
"Oh come on." She says.
"I...I just don't like all the attention."
They both smile. "It's just because you're not used to it." Hanna says.
"Yea." Aria says. "But that doesn't mean you shouldn't feel good about yourself."
They drag me over to the others and once again start with pictures. Then everyone splits up with the people they are getting rides with and leave.
"I'm glad you came." I say. "Wouldn't be the same."
I see her look at me from the corner of my eye. "Seeing you all prettied up defiently made my day."
I start laughing. "Once in a life time."
"Yea. Until prom that is."
I nod. "True. But that's not till another year."
"Yea well." We both laugh.
I get to a stop sign and look at her. She was staring out the window. "You're okay though right?"
She turns to me and nods. "I'm good."
I half smile. "Well if you need to talk I'm here."
"I know." I look to make sure no ones coming and drive off. It's quiet for a bit but then she says. "I'm going to get you to dance by the way."
I start cracking up. "I'd like to see you try."
"And what if your boyfriend asks you to dance? Going to tell him no? That's the whole point of a dance you know."
"Yes smart ass." She starts laughing and I have to hide a smile. "I do know that. I just rather not make a fool of myself."
"You won't make a fool of yourself. Just move to the beat."
"Not gonna happen."
I'm sad to say that somehow they managed to get me onto the dance floor. As I've gone through before, dancing is not my thing. I agreed on a slow song that came on just to satisfy Andrew but then some up beat music came on after and Spencer and Aria ambushed me to stay on. But that was sometime before the surprise of Emily bringing Toby as a date came into play. Yes, I said Toby. How that came about I couldn't tell you. The girls gave her a hard time about it and she kind of went MIA from us.
"Can you talk to him while I help get some more ice?" Noel was in the middle of trying to get me to have one dance with him when Spencer walked over.
I look over and see she was talking about her date Alex. I smile. "Of course Spence. Take your time."
She smiles. "Thank you. And by the way. I hate to do this but I'm running out of people who want to help out."
"Okay?"
"When I get back can you go and relieve whoever is helping out Mr. Fitz at the tossing booth?"
"Oh." If the lights were on I'm sure you could see the color leave my face. "Sure."
She smiles. "Thanks. I owe you."
I nod. "That you do."
My heart was beating fast just walking to the booth. The image of seeing him when his face came into view through the wreckage of our car popped into my head. The glass all over the place as he carefully pulled me out. I dream of that practically every night and it seemed to be more clear and noticeable that it was him. I guess now that I have a name to the face it's easier to picture him and know who he is. I want to be able to walk into his classroom everyday without feeling awkward. Or pass him in the halls and be able to say something as simple as hi.
I see him crouching down on the outside of the booth, picking up some bean bags from the floor. When he stands he sees me and his face drops a bit. Even he seems to have that feeling of not knowing how to act around me. Nice to know I'm not alone on that. He pulls back the curtain from the entrance of the booth and walks inside.
I take a deep breath. "You can do this." I tell myself and head over.
