So the day after homecoming we found out that Em got hurt. Something to do with Toby attacking her out of anger or something. Or at least that's what the entire town is saying. No one really knows because he disappeared and Em won't talk much about it. She's okay. Has a cut on her head and sprained her wrist, but other than that she's fine. On top of that Em managed to win a new car at homecoming. They had a bowl full of names and hers was called. Talk about being lucky and unlucky on the same night.
As for every day after that (a couple weeks after homecoming) not too much happened. The girls managed to get the town to agree on having a memorial for Alison in some spot that they were replacing a bench. Which I get the reason why they felt they needed this but a lot of people not being a fan of hers didn't agree, however they didn't complain. Except for that it was destroyed not too long after it was finished so obviously someone complained enough not to get caught. If that wasn't enough excitement, we had SAT exams too. But it got canceled because of a major storm, then had to retake it. Which I think I failed by the way.
Now probably the most exciting things that happened throughout the couple weeks was that Noel asked Aria out and we got invited to Monas birthday party that was going on tonight. First, yea I know, Noel asking Aria out took me off guard for sure. But it was either that he never had a crush on me like everyone thought or he got the hint that I wasn't breaking up with Andrew so he moved on and Hanna hooked them up. Either way I'm happy for Aria, with everything that's been going on she deserves to get her mind taken off of things. As for Monas party, I wasn't going to go but Hanna somehow convinced me to. I'm not sure how she managed to persuade me but she's very good at it.
The only bad thing about the last couple weeks is that Aunt Ella decided to move out...all because Uncle Byron refused to leave when Mike got into a fight at school. His attitude has been a bit off since he started to notice that his parents weren't getting along. So things have been a bit more on edge lately.
Now this morning was a mess. The good thing was that I made the decision to finally move into the Montgomerys house. Yes I know, I should have left as soon as I was told I could move in with the Montgomerys but I didn't because the Hastings had a lot on their plate with other important cases. I mean of course anything else besides helping out their adopted daughter is more important...cue sad music. But also I knew Spence wanted me to stick around a bit more so I did, and trust me, this was hard to do. But waking up this morning to me being accused of something I didn't do...again! Was the last of my patience.
It's Friday afternoon and the plan was to go to school this morning, but instead I skipped and went to the lake to clear my head. Then I went back to the house to pack, getting an earful of why aren't you in school and blah blah blah from Peter and Veronica. Eventually I tuned them out because it was the last straw when I woke up to being blamed for stealing a watch that Peter couldn't find, so I wasn't in the mood to listen to them try to be a "parental influence" on me. Im not sure what is going on with this family lately but somehow the grudge went from blaming Spencer for everything to blaming me. Especially when it came to things that went missing. Just because I had lived in a more "getto" environment (according to them) for like two and a half years and have started to act out a bit more they all of a sudden think that I'm starting to tap into it to get them mad. What in the hell is going through their heads?
"You sure you won't stay?" I look over and notice that Spencer is standing up against the frame of her door.
"Shouldn't you be at school?"
"Shouldn't you?"
I look away. "Wasn't in the mood."
I already knew she was going to try and change my mind. I did feel extremely bad because I know how her family is and I'm the only one she can count on to be there, but I couldn't stay. The way things are going I would end up more miserable than I already was.
Now I see her standing beside me. "Well...I'm on my lunch break."
I look at the time. "Lunch finished ten minutes ago."
"Wilden called us into the office again for more questions. So we got to take lunch during this period."
"Don't you have an AP class?"
She nods. "Principle Hackett gave me a note to skip. Wasn't missing much."
I nod. "That's nice of him. But education comes first. Wilden should really give it a rest."
"Not much we can do about that."
"Right."
She's quiet for a second. "Please stay?"
"I can't Spence. This is getting too much."
"Why can't you just stick it out with me a bit longer?" She gives me an upset look.
"Because, no offense Spence, but your family is driving me crazy."
She watches me as I put my TV into its box. "I know they are a handful but that doesn't mean they don't love you."
I nod. "Maybe, but bribing me and blaming me for stealing stuff is not how you show you love someone."
She doesn't have much to say to that. "You know mom and dad are still technically your guardians right?"
I nod. "Yea. But it won't be like that for long." The look in her eyes made me want to cry. "It's not like I'm leaving town. I'll see you at school and you know where to find me."
"Can you take me with you?" We both laugh a bit.
"If I could I would."
She half smiles. "So mom and dad are supposed to be getting all the paperwork for them to sign by the end of the week. Without that the Montgomerys can't legally take care of you the way they should."
"Good to know." I now start to pack up my game systems.
My phone buzzes and I take it out of my pocket. "Hey orphan. Too chicken to come to school?" Amber had wrote.
I've been trying to avoid her since Homecoming and trust me that's hard since we go to the same school and live in the same town. But now it's like it eggs her on when I don't pay attention. I'm constantly getting texts from her. The only reason why I have her number is because she somehow got mine and never leaves me alone. So instead of always deleting it and asking who it is I just leave it in my contacts.
I roll my eyes and ignore it as I always do. But then the part of the dream where I see her with a dog in the crowd after the car accident came to mind. Its permanently added itself to the nightmare. I've dreamt about it practically every night. It's like I can't get it out of my head, because that's all I see. I still have no idea if that was real, which is why I've kept it to myself...till now.
"You okay?"
I look at Spencer. "Huh?"
"What's wrong?"
"I..." I put my phone away. "You know that dream I have about the accident?" She nods. "Well lately there's been something different about it."
"Such as?"
I throw a controller into the box with my systems. "Like, well first off I remembered the name that Fitz gave me when he was helping me out."
She raises her eyebrows. "Yea?"
I nod. "His first name is Ezra."
"Make sure you don't start calling him that in school." She smiles.
I half laugh. "Yea, no. I barely even say hi to the guy." Then I think. "Anyway. The dream went a bit farther than it usually does, and this time I noticed that Amber was in the crowd of people who were on the sidewalk." I look at her and see her mouth drops. "And the dog that ran in front of the car was with her."
"What...are you kidding?"
I shake my head. "No. But I mean, it was just a dream."
"Based off your life."
"Yea. But dreams change all the time."
"Not ones based off your life, Jessie. Usually they enhance and let you see things that maybe you didn't remember. There's a possibility Amber was there."
"And a chance that my vision was horrible that day and imagined it."
She nods. "That's possible too. But you have to keep in mind that life dreams don't trick you in the way made up dreams do." I watch her. "Either Amber was really there or you imagined it. But both ways she was there somehow."
"So what do I do?"
"You may have to talk to her."
I laugh. "That's hilarious."
"I'm serious."
"I can't just walk up to the girl who hates my guts and ask what she was doing at the accident with the dog that killed my family. She'll break my face."
She thinks. "If she was there then she has explaining to do on why that dog ended up darting across the street. Obviously no one told you whose dog it was and that's because she never told anyone. You can get her off your back by bashing her about it."
I start to smile, then I stop. "Tempting. But then I'll be just as bad as her. I'm no bully."
"It's not bullying. You're just confirming what you know."
"Except I know nothing. It's just a guess."
"A pretty realistic one."
"Fine. But I'm not up to getting pounded."
"She's going to bother you even if you don't bring it up."
I sit on her bed and start to think. "You know even if I do say something it doesn't mean she'll be any less interested in picking on me. Because technically she did nothing wrong."
"I think not telling anyone it was her dog..."
"If it's her dog."
"It was standing with her. Why else would that dog be with her."
I'm quiet for a few seconds. "My point is. That even if I talk to her she could either tell the truth, which will change nothing because they are still dead." She gives me a sad look. "Or she can deny it, which will still change nothing because I can't prove she was there. I trust nothing that I saw that day because of how out of it I was."
"And yet you finally figured out that the guy who saved you was real and not imagined like you always thought." My mind drifts away a bit. Which she seemed to notice. "Look, it's your choice if you want to say something, but I hate seeing you struggle with this stuff."
"You're not the only one..."
I watch her for a minute. Everyday I'm thankful that her parents told her she couldn't come to Jersey for that weekend. She could have been killed too. Or permanently hurt in some way and that would have been my fault.
"I'm..." I start and she looks at me. "Every day I thank God that you weren't in that car." Her face goes a little pale. "I wouldn't have been able to forgive myself if your parents allowed you to go."
"Stop." She says. Tears were sneaking up on her now. "Stop thinking so much about that day. You had no idea."
"I know but..."
"No." She shakes her head. "Stop thinking of what could have happened if I came. I didn't so that's all that matters for my situation. Just think about what you are going to do or not going to do about Amber." She half smiles. "Which if you need back up I got you. I'll bring my Field Hockey stick."
I start to laugh. I couldn't believe how she changed the mood of this conversation so quickly. "Man I love you."
She hugs me. "Love you too."
In the end she convinced me to go to school for the afternoon. I mean I guess it was better than being held up in her room till school ended. So as we headed down the stairs I was prepared to say my goodbyes to the rest of the Hastings, even though they were the reason to pick up and leave, but as usual they were nowhere to be found.
"This is why I can't stay." I say trying not to sound upset. "They don't pay attention to begin with and blame me for things I didn't do. Now they aren't even here to say bye to someone who's been living with them for almost a year."
"Imagine being related to them." We head out to the backyard and walk to the gates.
I look at her. "Hey at least you're more up to their "Hastings ways" than I am. They constantly bribed me and tried to brainwash me to have those traits."
"Which didn't work." She says with a smile.
I laugh. "Of course not. Did they really think giving me new headphones and basically everything I wanted was going to change me?"
"They just aren't used to having someone in the family who isn't "perfect"."
I nod. "Well technically I was part of the family, but not really."
She nods in agreement.
"Had I been brought up in this family at a young age they probably would have succeeded in brainwashing me...no offense." I unlock my car and she helps me put my things into the trunk for later.
She shakes her head. "It's the truth. Had I been raised in a normal family I wouldn't be such a know it all." She starts to walk to her car.
"Do you want a ride?"
"Aren't you going to Arias after?"
I nod. "Yea. But you can come with me if you want. Or I'll drop you off."
She seems to think, then nods. "Sure."
I walk around to the drivers side. "Besides, being a know it all isn't so bad. Hermione was a know it all and she saved their butts a million times."
She laughs. "How does everything lead up to you comparing it to Harry Potter?" She gets in the car.
I turn on the car and shrug. "Honestly...I have no idea."
We both laugh and I take off.
