Ep 12: Sweet & Sour

"Wow, look at these flowers Fennekin!" Tori squealed as we walked along Route 5. Fennekin ran up to the tall flowers and took a big whiff, which made her smile with glee. We had been on Route 5 for a couple of days. We had stopped at the skate park and I had a ride on my old board, battled some trainers and now we're closing in on Camphrier Town.

"Hey look, there's a nice clearing in amongst all of the flowers," I pointed out as we walked into the flower patch.

"Pin!" Chespin cheered, who was happily resting on my head. As we made our way over to the clearing, however, he jumped down from my head and started to run around.

"Looks like Chespin wants to train," Tori observed as she saw the happy-go-lucky look on my Pokemon's face.

"You're right! So, let's bring out Froakie and Fletchling!" I cheered as I threw my other two Pokemon's pokeballs into the air.

"Ling!" Fletchling squawked as she took to the skies. I looked over at Froakie, however, and he didn't say anything. He still didn't have any confidence.

"Ok, come on out Flabébé!" Tori shouted as she brought out her only other Pokemon. Flabébé sprang out of her pokeball and began to spin.

"Fletchling, why don't you go train with the girls? I'm sure they could use your power to help train! Besides, Froakie and I will be training, trying to boost his confidence," I told the bird that was now resting on my arm. She squawked happily and flew over to the two female Pokemon, and Tori. "Ok, Froakie, Chespin, we're all going to be training together." Chespin threw his right hand up excitedly but Froakie, however, looked very uneasy being around such a powerful opponent. "It's ok Froakie, we'll cure that confidence."

"Pin!" Chespin cheered with a pat on Froakie's back, which made him scurry behind my feet. I sighed, but continued anyway.

"Ok Froakie, let's work on focussing that energy!" I began, looking at my two Pokemon with determination. "Store up power for your Water Pulse!" Froakie closed his eyes and began to mumble. He was powering up energy for the Water-Type attack in his palms. "Now materialise it and aim at Chespin!" Froakie suddenly opened his eyes as the ball of water began to appear. He looked confident. Was he finally going to be able battle…?

"Kie!" the frog gasped as he stared over to the east. He started to shiver, which caused the Water Pulse to pop and spread water beneath my feet. Chespin and I jumped away from the flooding water, before I wrenched my head around to see what Froakie was staring at with such fear, and I saw two figures; one that seemed to be quite tall, maybe in their teens, and the other was a short kid, who I assumed was about 8. Suddenly the sun vanished behind the clouds and the glare stopped, which enabled us to see the figures clearly.

"It's you two!" I yelled in shock as I saw the teenage boy and his little brother walking by. They both turned and the older one sighed, while the younger one gave off a quick, nervous smile. "You're Froakie's last trainer!" I heard Tori gasp from nearby, and Fletchling came flying to my side.

The teen that was Froakie's previous trainer had shaggy brown hair and purple eyes. He had thick eyebrows and fair skin. He had quite developed muscles, as shown off by his lack of sleeves. He had a black and sleeveless over shirt with a large collar, which covered his crème singlet. He had light purple pants on, which matched his eyes, and wore black and crème sneakers. He wore a black bracelet with a mysterious stone in it, which resembled Kevin's.

The younger boy, which I assumed was his younger brother, had short brown hair, except for the front where a quite long amount of hair shot up. He had fair skin, which matched his brothers, but he had narrow eyebrows and green eyes, which contrasted the teen. The boy wore a pale green, zip-up hoodie, with a crème t-shirt underneath. He then wore short, dark grey shorts and white socks that almost went up to his knees. Finally, the socks came out of some forest green sneakers.

"Not you again," the teen spat as he stared me down. His glance switched focus, and he looked at Froakie. "So you're trying to raise that pathetic piece of trash? What a waste of time."

"Froakie is not a waste of time! He just needs to build up his confidence!" I barked back. He narrowed his eyes and looked like he disapproved of what I said.

"If a Pokemon isn't good from the start, it's going to be worthless in the future." I started to get really angry then. I gripped Fletchling's now empty pokeball and was about to propose we have a battle, when he bet me too it.

"Levi, take care of this wimp," the boy spat as he handed the young boy a pokeball.

"But… I don't want to…" he mumbled under his breath as he looked down at the pokeball in his hand.

"Yeah, well I'm the older one so what I say goes!" he fumed, which made Levi step back and turn to me.

"This will be a one on one Pokemon battle!" he told me. Levi went to throw the pokeball, but he hesitated, and left his arm still in the air.

"Get it over with!" the brother ordered him as he took the pokeball and threw it for him.

"Bulba!" the unfamiliar Pokemon cheered as he was unleashed from capitivity.

"Oh hey Bulby!" Levi sang with a wide smile as he recognised the Pokemon.

"This isn't play time, wimp!" Wow, what an ass. How could you treat your own brother like that?! I decided to get out my Pokedex and scan the new Pokemon.

"Bulbasaur, the Seed Pokemon. A strange seed was planted on its back at birth. The plant sprouts and grows with this Pokémon," my red Pokedex read.

"Oh isn't that nice, you got your Bulbasaur lesson for today!" the boy spat. "Begin the battle already!"

"Fine, Fletchling, I choose you!" I roared as I pointed forward to the clearing, which was our make-shift battlefield. Fletchling swooped in front my right shoulder and stared down the Pokemon. "If you won't attack, I will! Fletchling, use Aerial Ace!"

"Ling!" the bird squawked as she dove down, close to the ground, and surged at Bulbasaur.

"Bulby, use Leech Seed!" Levi countered. Bulbasaur then threw himself forward so that the bulb on his back was facing Fletchling. A small seed them popped out of the Bulbasaur's back and tapped Fletchling on the head, which caused her to get tangled in vines. "Now, while she's down, use Razor Leaf!" Bulbasaur then followed up by sending out dozens of spinning leaves at Fletchling. I was going to counter, but I realised that the Razor Leaf could only help me…

"As soon as the Razor Leaf hits, use Quick Attack!" I commanded, as I wanted a quick comeback. The Grass-Type attack started to slash as Fletchling, but much to Levi's dismay, it cut all of the vines! Fletchling then rocketed out of the dust and slammed into Bulbasaur, sending him skidding along the grass. "Now, let the wind carry you back and then use Razor Wind!"

"Bulby, use Poison Powder into the same wind Fletchling is gliding in!" Levi ordered tactically. Just as Fletchling was floating into the air using the draft, Bulbasaur started to vibrate while giving off a poisonous dust, which intoxicated Fletchling immediately. Her body flashed purple as she was hurt by the poison. "Now finish this with Take Down!"

"Fletchling, regain your composure for an Aerial Ace!" I retaliated. Fletchling pulled through, as always, and roared down towards Bulbasaur with wind streaks surrounding her. Bulbasaur's body was glowing orange and he was charging along the ground at full throttle. Then, the two collided, and began battling back and forth. But, because of more power and type advantage, Fletchling came through with a pummelling Aerial Ace on Bulbasaur. The Pokemon rolled back onto Levi's feet and was unconscious.

"Bulby!" Levi shrieked as he went down to pick up the Bulbasaur. He faintly moaned, and smiled at the boy, letting him now he was ok. It was short lived however as his brother zapped Bulbasaur back into his pokeball.

"Worthless…" his muttered as he began to go release the Pokemon.

"No!" Levi cried as he snatched the pokeball from his brother's hand. "Not another one! You need to stop releasing your Pokemon!" He then hugged the pokeball and I saw a tear roll down his left cheek, which splashed onto Bulbasaur's pokeball.

"Whatever, you keep it," he said, as a form of dismissing his brother. "Looks like I need to avenge that little wimp!" I groaned, and hoped he was only wanting a one on one battle since Fletchling was injured, and Froakie couldn't. "Use as many Pokemon as you want against my one! I bet, I'll defeat you…" He smiled wickedly as he threw the pokeball. I was shocked when I saw the large hunk of metal, floating in front of me.

"Metang!" it cried in a very robotic voice. I wanted to scan him with my Pokedex, as I'd never seen such a Pokemon, but I knew he would make a sly comment.

"Fletchling, are you ready to go for another round?" I asked the Pokemon that was using my left arm like she was perched on a telephone wire.

"Ling!" she chirped as she flew into the battlefield air space. She wouldn't survive long, however, since she took a lot of damage in her battle with Bulbasaur.

"Then let's do this! Start off with a Razor Wind!" Fletchling threw her wings forward and created sharp cresents of wind power. I expected Metang to dodge or counter, but the boy just let the attack hit Metang.

"Direct hit!" I heard Tori cheer, though I wasn't so confident… The smoke cleared and it showed Metang, exactly the same as before! He seemed to have took no damage at all!

"Fletchling, swoop in and then use Peck attack repeatedly on one spot!" I commanded in an attempt to wear down a single part of Metang. The teenager did nothing yet again, and let Fletchling land attack after attack on Metang! However, just like before, the attacks seemed to do nothing!

"You're weak," he spat. Before I could yell back at him, however, he continued. "I've just been testing your power so far. And you've proven nothing but to be a pushover, like my brother." He then glared down at the boy who hung his head in shame.

"That's it! I've had enough of you!" I roared. I felt this passion, a passion that burned inside of me. Was this what battling a truly fierce opponent felt like…? No matter, I have to focus on the battle right now! I suddenly saw that Fletchling was encapsulated in a purple light; the effects of poison from our previous battle! I had to end this quick… "Fletchling, use Quick Attack back to back!"

"Fletch… Ling, Ling, Ling!" Fletchling screeched as she slammed her body against Metang repeatedly. It was doing nothing, but Fletchling wouldn't give up. Just as she was coming in for another attack, however, the teenager finally called his first move.

"Use Bullet Punch!" Just as Fletchling was coming in at a rapid speed, Metang threw his arm forward, which was shining a bright red, and it surged into Fletchling. The super effective move sent Fletchling rolling across the battlefield, and she was knocked out instantly.

"You were great, Fletchling," I complimented her as she was zapped back into her pokeball. The boy wasn't even smiling about his win, he just stayed as stone cold as ever. I looked behind me to see my two remaining Pokemon. There was no way I was sending out Froakie, so my choice was easy. "Chespin, centre stage!"

"Pin!" Chespin cheered as he jumped forwards and onto the makeshift battlefield.

"Now Chespin, use Leech Seed!" Chespin reared back and the spikes on its crown started to glow. The light materialised and created 5 seeds which all started to shoot towards Metang, with green streamers trailing behind the seeds.

"Metang, use Bullet Punch to hit the seeds away," the boy commanded calmly. Metang's two arms began to shine a deep red, where it then began to easily hit away the seeds. "Now, Gyro Ball"!

"Tang!" Metang sang as he quickly shifted form and began to spin like a top. A large blue ring of power surrounded the Pokemon and he surged towards Chespin.

"Use Vine Whip to propel yourself into the air!" Chespin sent out two vines and pushed himself into the air with ease, but the boy wouldn't go down that easy.

"What a cheap and predictable tactic. Metang, change course!" he shouted. Metang suddenly changed course, and went straight up, slamming his body into Chespin. Chespin was then further propelled into the air, and if Chespin landed on the ground from such a drop it could knock him out on the spot!

"Chespin, use Vine Whip on the ground just before you're about to hit the ground. Then, use Rollout!" Chespin didn't seem to be moving an inch as he began to drop towards the ground, and it wasn't looking good for me. "Chespin, Vine Whip now!" Chespin snapped out of his daze and sent out two vines, which whipped the air, creating a small whirlwind that acted as a soft landing for Chespin. My Pokemon then began to steam roll at Metang, but the jerk just stayed calm.

"Iron Defence." Metang gained a coat of some sort of shiny metal, while Chespin began hitting him over and over with Rollout. Every time the Rock-Type move was getting stronger, but every time Metang was also gaining more defence. It was a lose, lose situation. "Now, Bullet Punch." Metang's speed was unmatchable, and his right arm jerked out right in front of Chespin, just as he was about to land another hit. Chespin was sent flying into the flowers and I ran over to find the small Pokemon, only to discover he was unconscious… I carried the small Pokemon back to Froakie's side and stared over at the boy.

"I guess that's it," I sighed. The teen looked over at me as if I was joking, but he clearly saw I wasn't.

"You still have that Froakie, don't you? Or are you afraid he's too pathetic," he laughed wickedly.

"Froakie is not pathetic!" I yelled back. "I just don't think it will be good for him if he goes up against you…"

"So you're afraid," he spat.

"I'm… Not afraid," I moaned as I turned around to Froakie. My Pokemon looked nervous, but for some reason he started to slowly walk forwards. "Froakie…" Froakie reached the makeshift battlefield, and he turned around to me and gave me a nervous smile. "Alright, Froakie… I choose you!" I threw a fist forward in excitement and I saw the teen give off a slight smirk. "Now Froakie, try to use your Bubble attack!"

"Try?!" the boy chuckled. Froakie became nervous from the teen's comment and went he opened his mouth, no bubbles came out!

"Metang, let's end this quickly with Zen Headbutt!" The top portion of Metang's body started to glimmer pink, and he raced forwards towards Froakie.

"Dodge it!" I commanded. I couldn't see Froakie's face, but I could tell that he had a worried expression. Froakie was panicking, so he just froze up. However, just as Metang began to close in on him he started to throw punches forward at Metang, which stopped the attack from hitting him! "Awesome Acrobatics, Froakie!" Froakie turned around at me and suddenly looked more confident.

"Ok, Bullet Punch!" We had no time to counter, so Metang's right arm – which shone with a blazing red – swung at Froakie and sent the small Froakie flying towards me. I looked into Froakie's eyes, and they still had some spunk in them, though he looked more terrified than I'd ever seen him. I placed him back down onto the grass, and he struggled to stand up.

"Now, use Bubble!" Froakie opened his mouth, and thankfully, this time bubbles sprayed out, although they were firing uncontrollably and also were not very powerful.

"Wow, this Pokemon just keeps getting more pathetic. Let's end this right here! Metang, use Gyro Ball!" Froakie kept firing the attack uncontrollably, but it didn't affect Metang at all as he span through the bubbles. Metang closed in on Froakie, and I could just feel the Pokemon's fear. SLAM! Metang slammed into Froakie, and he was pushed back to me with such force, that even I fell over. I stood up and picked Froakie up from the ground, and saw that he had swirls for eyes.

"Oh no…" I moaned as I returned Froakie. I stared in awe over at the Metang, as he looked like he had just battled a Pidgey.

"Not just Froakie, but all of your Pokemon are worthless. I recommend a complete team change," he groaned as he began to walk away.

"Wait! You can't just walk away like that!" I shouted after the boy. He turned and looked back at me.

"Why not? Do you have any other business with me?" I stared at him blankly, and I had nothing. "That's what I thought. C'mon Levi, we're out of here."

"No."

"What?!" the teen shrieked to the younger brother.

"No! I'm not going!" Levi yelled at the older boy and ran to my side. I looked down to the young kid, puzzled, as I didn't have a clue as to what was happening.

"Yes, you are," he said with a murderous glare in his eyes.

"No, I've had enough of the way you treat Pokemon! I love Pokemon, and it kills me to watch you release Pokemon. And then you go and try to release Bulby, the Pokemon I love most? That's it!" Levi whined. The teen stared at us both and just shrugged.

"Whatever, you don't deserve me. You deserve wimps like these two."

"I am NO wimp!" Tori roared as she began to punch and kick the air, while I held her back from destroying the boy. The air was filled with silence, until the boy spoke.

"I'll see ya around, losers," he laughed as he began to walk away,

"Wait! Who are you?" I questioned. He stopped and turned his head to the right, not looking at any of us directly.

"The name's Dwayne Silvers, future World Champion," he announced before turning to walk away. "Of course you could've just asked Levi that, idiot." I groaned as we all watched the brunette disappear into the flowers.

"I can't stand that guy!" I exclaimed. Chespin jumped up on top of my head and shouted in agreement. "No offense, Levi."

"None taken. My big bro's a jerk!" he moaned, while anger filled his eyes. "We're two completely differently people. The only way I can describe it is Sweet vs. Sour."

"Well you are a cutie!" Tori giggled, which made Levi blush.

"So, where do you plan on going now?" I asked the young boy.

"I don't know. I really wanted to travel, so my parents – who are the owners of the Friend Safari in Kiloude City – allowed me to travel around with my brother. I wasn't happy as I knew my brother was a bully, and I was always the kid that got bullied, but I had no idea that this was how he treated Pokemon too! Of course I'm not legally old enough to have my own Pokemon, since I'm only 8, but I think I should be ok, as long as I don't compete in any official battles or tournaments," Levi explained. The two of us nodded after hearing his story, and I felt like we both knew what to do.

"Levi, why don't you travel with us?" Tori asked the younger boy. His eyes glistened, and he had a goofy smile on.

"Yes please!" he pleaded with a fist bump to the air. We both laughed at the remark, and decided to head off for Camphrier Town as I needed Nurse Joy to attend to my Pokemon's wounds.

So Dwayne Silvers is his name. I'm sure this won't be the last time I see him. But, I know that the next time we battle, I'm going to crush him and that Metang!

TO BE CONTINUED…
