Chapter 3
Mai stood frozen in place as she stared at the supposedly deceased boy in front of her. Her world suddenly flipped upside down, this did not do good things to her stomach. She suddenly felt an instant urge to be sick so she did the only thing she could do…she ran.
Mai couldn't breathe properly as she ran out of the room down the set of stairs and into the first bathroom she could find. She ran over to the sink and splashed her face with the chilled water, she took deep breaths in an attempt to keep her morning tea down. After about 10 minutes of this she finally looked up into the pale reflection of herself in the mirror. She could see how sickly she looked and could see the shaken feelings still rolling through her overly expressive eyes.
"Damn you look like hell," Said a masculine voice from behind her.
"Well you try looking fine after finding out that someone who should be dead is actually alive and in a coma," Mai snapped at the voice out of anger that someone should comment on her appearance when she knew fully well that she looks like crap.
"Well babes that does sound pretty sucky," The voice responded in a somewhat cocky tone of voice. "But it still sounds like good news if you ask me."
Mai turned around to tell this annoyance that no one was asking them and that they should leave strangers alone when they are having a breakdown. Mai looked around until she noticed the man standing or more specifically floating in front of her. He was slightly transparent but this was normal considering the guy was obviously dead.
"You're dead," Mai's brain apparently stopped communication with her mouth for she just said the stupidest most obvious thing ever. Thank God Naru wasn't there to tell her just how stupid that statement was.
"I would never have figured that out!" The ghost said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Sorry, you're the first dead person I have ever actually seen," Mai said snapping out of her shock and thinking maybe Gene was right about her powers growing. This brought her mind back to Gene and she groaned before sinking to the floor to sit a panic for a little while.
"So what's your problem as we have already established that my problem is being dead," the ghost said leaning down to Mai's height.
Mai didn't say anything for a moment and when she did talk it wasn't what the ghost had expected.
"Are you the ghost my friend saw yesterday?" Mai asked him.
"Yes that would be me, please call me Bob," Bob said doing a ridiculous bow.
"Are you really a bathroom pervert ghost?" Mai asked him as she pulled her knees up to her chest and hugged them to her.
"No but I have convinced your friend I am, she just caught me in here while I was floating about attempting to haunt people," Bob said laughing at his own trick.
Mai couldn't help to giggle that burst from her throat even though she was still slightly freaked out. "How can you attempt to haunt people?" Mai asked him with a small smile on her face.
"I tried picking up people's cups and moving them…but my hand just went through," Bob admitted looking somewhat sheepish.
Mai giggled again before her smile slowly faded as she remembered what sent her running into the bathroom to begin with.
"What am I going to do?" Mai groaned as her head fell down to rest on her knees "I have to tell Naru but things are so awkward between us and what if he doesn't believe me? Hell, I don't believe me!" Mai continued to complain whether to herself or Bob neither really knew.
"Why don't you do the scientific thing?" Bob questioned her after hearing her complaints.
"What do you mean?" Mai asked looking back up and the hovering spectre.
"Well from what I can gather you saw someone who you thought was dead in a hospital room here but you can clearly see ghosts so maybe you didn't see what you thought, the answer is simple enough: check your findings before reporting them!" Bob finished with a slightly dramatic flair.
"That's a good idea actually," Mai muttered to herself more than the ghost who suggested it. "But I can't go back now, I'm supposed to go get the others back to base, I can't just go back up there," Mai said while trying to think of another way to go up there without Naru wondering where she went off to and looking for her.
"Go at night…duh," Bob said looking at Mai like he thought she was a little slow.
"Ok good plan!" Mai said enthusiastically "You know for a pervert, you're not a bad ghost."
"I'm not a pervert!" Bob said before floating off through the walls.
Mai decided that she should go get the gang so that they could start back up on the case and hopefully find out what was making the patients disappear. After taking the time to clean up her appearance as much as she could she left the bathroom and took the closest elevator down to the basement.
Once Mai made her way to the basement and the morgue she immediately heard the voices that she could easily recognise as Monk and Ayako. She groaned as she realised they had begun arguing yet again and from the sounds of things it was due to Ayako insisting that it was a simple earth spirit that she could handle easily. Mai thought she was over saying that already.
"Hey guys!" Mai said cheerfully as she rounded the corner from the elevator to the room where she could hear the pair shouting.
"Hello Mai," John said with a somewhat relieved smile on his face.
"Naru sent me to get you all back to base so we can compare findings," She said as she made a let's move out gesture with her arms.
"Mai!" Monk shouted while running and hugging the small girl. "Thank god, we can leave before that creepy lady comes back!" Monk began to drag Mai towards the elevators and the rest of the group just followed along going with the flow.
The group managed to get to the base room with only minor interruptions from Ayako and Masako with John trying as usual to keep the peace. Once everyone was in the room they took note that Yasu was sitting at the conference table with a stack of papers surrounding him and a flash in his glasses that said he had found something.
"Finally you are all back, Mai what took you so long?" Naru asked looking at the girl who jumped and nervously smiled at her boss.
"Ummm, bathroom break!" Mai said since she wasn't technically lying she felt slightly better, she was taking a break in a bathroom just not for the reasons everyone would think.
"Very well, now I want all of you to report your findings so we can compile them together," Naru spoke with an air of authority that no one could refuse.
"Well Miss Hara sensed a ghost in the basement," John started since everyone else seemed to be waiting for someone to break the unusual silence.
"Yes I sensed a very scared ghost, but they were blocking me so I couldn't gather much more," Masako said while holding her sleeve in front of her mouth.
"That's fine you have confirmed what Mai saw in her dream. She said the woman was 'dressed as a nurse and not the stripper kind'," He said quoting Mai's joke from earlier while everyone else cracked up.
Once everyone calmed down again Yasu began to speak "I'm going to assume that ghost is the missing nurse then, she has been missing for a week now."
"That matched what the crazy mortician said, she said that the name tags started moving around about a week ago." Monk told Naru what the mortician had told them when they had spoken to her earlier.
"I have been looking over the patient files and found that there appears to be no connection between the patients at all, many were suffering from different illnesses some like cancer and others something as simple as kidney stones. I can double check if you want big boss?" Yasu said his findings before ending in more of a question directed at Naru.
"Hmm," Naru sat in his thinking pose before speaking "I feel like we are missing something here and I want to know what. Everyone will stay in base for the rest of the afternoon, I want to go through all the files with a fine tooth comb and find what we are missing," Naru ordered the group.
For the rest of the afternoon the group worked and reworked the files trying to find any connection and why the ghost had decided to move from just patients to staff as well as of late and if all the patients were being killed where were the bodies disappearing to?
Before they all knew it night had fallen and almost everyone decided to sleep on it and continue to work in the morning. Everyone minus Lin and Naru went off to bed including Mai who waiting in her bed until she knew Masako and Ayako were deep asleep.
Once she was sure it was safe she snuck out of her bed and careful to avoid any cameras she snuck up to the third floor private room. She had some research of her own to do.
Thank you all for reading and I promise the wait for the next chapter won't be soooo long. Till next time please review!
