"Stop hogging the ball, Brant!"

Trying not to get angry as Rachel's annoying voice comes to my ears I look to the side. She's giving me a mean look and waving to pass it to her. The problem is that she is completely blocked.

She doesn't seem to grasp that I can't pass it to her as she yells. "Brant! Stop being a ball hog!"

Rachel decided to go out for the team again this year and unlucky for everyone she made it. I got stuck with her on my side for practice. She was such a pain in the ass last year, and with my "standing up for myself" phase I'm going through with her and the others now, she's not going to let go of her dislike of me.

"That a girl, Jessie!" Mr. Brooks yells when I shoot in another three pointer.

I slightly bump into Rachel and give her a nice try face while I run back down to the other end of the court and look over at Mr. Brooks. "I'm just getting warmed up!"

Luna comes over towards me to stand in her offense spot, me blocking her. "Good shot." She whispers. She runs the other way and I follow.

"Thanks. I think Rachel has had it with me though." I bump her a bit to keep her in front of me.

Out of breath she says. "Doesn't help that you shouldered her on the way back to your position and gave her a cocky look either." The ball gets to her.

"I'm just giving her a piece of her own medicine." I swipe my hand to try to take it away.

"That may be true but it doesn't keep her from wanting to pound you." She turns to the side and pushes me a bit. I get knocked off balance from the shove and fall to the floor as she scores two points from the layup.

"Foul!" I yell. "Coach, that was a cheap shot."

"Maybe, but that's the move that has helped us win games, kiddo."

Luna walks over to me and holds out her hand.

"Nice play." I say.

She smiles and helps me to my feet. "Thanks...bitch."

I try to hide a smile. "Jerk."

If there are any Supernatural fans out there you'll get the Bitch, Jerk reference.

She just smiles as we start to head over to the sideline to switch out with a new group and sit on the bench. Rachel tries to cram herself in between me and a freshman who was so good that they put her as a starter for our team. That rarely happens with freshmen. Normally they either don't make the team or are just backups.

"Move, newbie." Rachel says.

"Dude." I say and block her attempt to squeeze in. "Leave Kelly alone. Find another spot."

"Screw off, Brant."

"Go sit with Brandy." Luna butts in. "She seems to be the only one who can tolerate your rude ass."

"Luna." I whisper with a face mixed between scared and proud. Then I turn back to see that Kelly is starting to smile and I get her attention, shaking my head in warning so that Rachel wouldn't start with her too.

"Excuse me?" Rachel says to Luna.

"You heard me." She says. "The only one who is going to have any patience with you is her, because the others who could last season moved up to Varsity. So go get comfortable with your new BFF for the rest of the season."

Rachel stands there quietly for a second. Her face is a little sad at first but then it changes and seems to be debating whether she wanted to get herself into trouble already. Then she makes up her mind and sits farther down the bench with Brandy.

Sometimes it's hard to take Rachel seriously because she has the "I'm tough" attitude but then she doesn't always jump on her "wanting to kick your ass" instincts. She always runs her mouth but actually starting a fight doesn't usually happen unless she is around Amber. It's like she absorbs Ambers energy and that triggers something inside of herself. Kind of like a body guard I guess you can say. It's hard to explain, but if you think back to when she hit me at Noel's party it makes more sense to why she reacted the way she did.

"Did she look upset to you?" I say and turn back to Luna.

"Who cares?" She says.

"I'm just sayin. I've never seen anyone hit a weak spot with her before."

"Well she deserves it. Don't get all mushy and sympathetic now."

We all head off to the locker room at the end of practice and I hop in for a quick shower. When I'm done I head over back to my gym locker and I feel the exhaustion kicking in.

"Great work today, Tor." I say when I get back.

Tori is a Junior who was on the team last year as a backup.

She smiles at me from the locker across from me. "Thanks, Jess. Think I'll get more play time this year?"

"I couldn't tell ya. But with the way you were playing today it should be a no brainer on more time in for you."

"Oh please." Rachel pokes her head around the other wall of lockers. "You played like there was something up your ass. You have no idea what you're doing, Jackson."

"She did great." I say. "I don't know what you were looking at."

"Right." She starts to laugh. "She could barely hold onto the ball when she got it, like she was afraid to catch it. I can't believe Coach even gave you a spot with no improvement from last year."

"Says the one who tripped over her own feet a good three times today." Luna says from the locker next to Tori. "Plus your blocking could use some work."

Rachel walks over to us now, throwing on a fresh Rosewood basketball shirt. "You have a bad attitude today Rouche." (Pronounced like in cockroach).

"Only when there's someone around I don't like." She replies.

Rachel starts to walk closer and I get in between her and Luna. "Stop." I say. "Can we go once without arguing? It's getting old."

She eyes me and smiles. "Aw, Brant. Your captain skills are kicking in. How cute."

"Walk away, Rachel."

She pushes closer to me and I'm knocked into Luna, who keeps me up. "You're so tough all of a sudden. Why, because you think being captain can help you out?" She laughs "Wow, you're full of it."

I look straight into her eyes. I grew a bit in the last few weeks, so she's the only one in Ambers group that is around my height, just centimeters taller than me now. "I have the same attitude whether as a captain or not. If you are messing with people I care about you'll hear it from me."

"So loyal of you. But that will give you a black eye at the end."

"Maybe." I watch her. "Now go home."

"Make me."

"You do realize I have more of a say in things now that I am the official captain, don't you?"

Her eyes narrow in on me.

"I can talk Coach out of keeping you on this team with a snap of my finger."

Not only did her mouth start to drop but I see the eager look in most of the girl's eyes. They look like they're waiting for me to do exactly what I said, yet they have the look as if they are waiting for Rachel to snap. It's a pretty mind blowing moment for me to have everyone looking at me as someone in charge. It feels so weird. But before I know it, Rachel just backs up and walks away. It's a bit shocking to be honest.

When I get back to Aria's after practice no one is home. So I go to the kitchen to grab some left over Chinese from the night before then head over to the family room to watch some TV, or maybe a movie. As I look at the DVDs they have I come across something that says Aria and Jessie's Sixth Birthday wedged between some other home movies.

I stare at it for a few seconds and then grab it, debating for awhile whether to put it on. Finally I think I should so I pop it into the DVD player. The first thing that comes to the screen is a banner that says Happy Sixth Birthday Jessie and Aria! Then it zooms out and see that Aria is ramming into me, making us both fall to the ground in a fit of laughter. We were in my back yard of the old house.

"Be careful!" Uncle Byron's voice comes from behind the camera.

"Byron can you help me with this?" My dad's voice comes and my heart sinks.

Since the accident I've had a hard time watching anything with my family in it so I had put them all in storage. It has been so long that I haven't seen them that their faces and voices are starting to slip away. Even my nightmares are starting to fade their faces and voices. So I try to remember their face by looking at whatever pictures I have left on my phone or social media. I think I should go get that stuff out of storage soon.

"Yea, coming." The camera moves. "Here, Ella, take this."

"Mommy!" Aria yells. The camera shows her running over to Aunt Ella with me running the opposite way. Aria was crying.

"What happened?" Aunt Ella asks.

Tears are streaming down her face and she points to her elbow. "Boo Boo." There's nothing there so it was probably one of those moments where she hit her elbow on the ground and it hurt.

"Aw. It's okay." The camera moves away from Aria and as we hear the sound of her kissing Aria's nonexisting injury it shows me over by the bounce house with little Spencer.

I smile as I see myself trying to get Spencer to get inside with me. "Oh my God." I half laugh.

Spencer kept shaking her head in protest of going into the bouncy house. I remember she used to be afraid of it.

"Spen!" Aria says as her attempt of saying Spencer's name and runs over to us. She points to the bounce house. "Jump?"

She shakes her head. "No."

"Peas?" My attempt of saying please.

"It's okay Spencer." My mom comes into view of the camera now. "Nothing to be afraid of….look." She picks me up and helps me inside. Then she does the same to Aria and they watch us jump around.

"Spen!" Aria yells.

"Spence!" I yell after her. "Come jump!"

We both wave for her to come inside.

I put my finished plate of food to the side and decide to stretch out on the couch as I keep watching our baby selves. I should have thought twice about it because before I know it, I knock out and fall into such a deep sleep that I'm dreaming in no time. It felt so real it was hard to grasp.

"Hey, baby."

The place I stand is dark, so I don't see who is saying those words. But I recognize the voice. I stand in that space till light flickers around me and it starts to brighten. It looks like a sunrise and I see my mom sitting on a bench at the playground we used to go to near Rosewood Day. The same bench she always sat on as she watched us play.

My mouth drops and I watch her for a minute as I hesitate on whether to go over there.

"It's okay." She says. "Just visiting."

I walk to her. "That sounds weird."

She smiles. "It's hard to explain." She taps the space next to her.

I sit down and watch her for awhile. It's crazy how it feels like she's actually here with me. "I miss you."

She puts her hand on my face and I close my eyes to the warmth of her fingers and palm on my cheek. It's been so long since I've felt the familiar touch of my mom. "I miss you too, nena."

"Do you watch me from where you are?"

She nods. "Always."

"Did you see what Katie did?"

She slowly nods and her face goes a bit blank, like she's not sure how to react. "I did."

"Can you believe her."

"Jessie." She starts. "It wasn't smart of her to do something like that but you haven't seen what she's been going through since I died."

"That is no excuse!" I half yell. "What about me, ma? Have you seen what I've been going through? I'm still okay. Yea I've changed a bit but I haven't gone crazy by hitting people I care about or dating guys who beat me!"

"Jessie." I hear my name echo around us, but it wasn't her voice.

"What the?" I look up to the sky.

"Jessie. Wake up." The voice says again.

"Looks like our times up." Mom says and gets up.

The scene starts to shake and fade away. "Wait...mom, don't leave."

She starts to walk backwards. "I'm always watching you. Te amo."

My eyes slowly start to open as I feel a shake to my shoulder. "Jessie?" A soft deep voice comes to my ears.

I rub my eyes. "Hm?" I say and see that Mike is standing over me.

He smiles. "Hey sleepy head."

"Mikey." I stretch. "Hey." I sit up and he sits next to me.

"Tired?"

I nod. "Practice wasn't as long as it would usual be, but was enough to kick my ass."

"I feel ya. Lacrosse is the same."

"Except you never seem to be sleepy when you get home. You get home, take a shower and head back out to hang with your friends. What are you on?"

He laughs. "Maybe it's old age." He gives me a goofy look.

I shove him. "Jerk."

He smiles. "Love you."

I smile back. "Love you too." I rub my eyes and he gives me a curious look. "What?"

"Are you okay?"

"Yes?"

"You just look like you've seen a ghost."

"Oh."

He nods. "Bad dream?"

"Um…well. Yes and no."

"Care to share?"

I think for a minute and get up to take out the CD from the DVD player and then set it back on the shelf. After I sit back down I explain what I remember. When I finish he just nods as it's quiet for a few seconds. The thought process on his face was a bit alarming.

"Well…I don't want to freak you out." He says. "But Katie's car is down the block. So maybe your dream was a sign?"

My heart sinks and my eyes pop out in fear. "What?"

"I heard she was in town."

"So did I." I feel light headed now. "But there's no way she'd be here."

"Why wouldn't she?"

"Because I heard that she tried to see me at school and Hackett called the Hastings over there. She wouldn't be stupid enough to still try after they got involved again."

Then yelling comes from outside. "Get off my property!" It's Uncle Byron. "You are not allowed to see her!"

"Don't you tell me I can't see my own niece!"

Now my heart's pounding and my eyes bug out.

Mike automatically moves closer. "Relax, okay?"

"Oh now she's your niece?" We hear Uncle Byron.

"I'm relaxed." I tell him.

"Was that how you thought of her when you hit her the last time you were here?" We hear him again.

Mike gives me a look. "You're hyperventilating. Breathe."

"It was an accident." She says.

"Don't you dare use that excuse, Katie. You don't accidentally hit someone you care about in that way."

I take a few breaths and decide to head to the window, Mike is right behind me. When I look I see her smiling at Uncle Byron, the way she always does when she's trying not to get upset.

"Byron." She says softly. "I just want to talk to her."

He shakes his head. "Not a chance."

"You can't keep me from seeing her."

"The Hastings told you to stay away. They told you that they'll make sure a restraining order is on you if you tried again. Don't take their threats lightly. They get what they want. Why do you think they won to keep you from being her guardian?"

She gives him a mean look. "She's my family, Byron. None of you have a say!"

"We do have a say actually. The Hastings were her guardian and now myself and Ella are her legal guardians. I'm sure you saw the will. We were number one on the list of people to take care of her. So when she was okay to go through with her parents wishes, we didn't hesitate. So yes. We have more of a say than you do."

"You're so full of..." She notices I'm watching and smiles. "Hola, Jessie."

My heart thumps faster against my chest. Uncle Byron then turns around and gives me a look. I back away from the window and close the curtains.

"Jessie!" She yells.

"It's okay." Mike says and drags me back to the couch.

"Come out! We need to talk." I hear her again.

"I'm not going to ask you to leave again." Uncle Byron says. "Otherwise I'll be calling the cops."

It's quiet for a bit then she says. "This isn't over."

I hear footsteps, then silence. The door opens and Uncle Byron walks inside, locking the door behind him.

The first thing I do is give him a hug. "Thanks."

He smiles down at me. "She won't hurt you again. I'll make sure of that."
