Review, let me know what you think!
When we're heading back to school I'm pretty bummed out. We had been on a non defeated streak all season, and the one team that had sucked all last season became superhuman and beat us. The bus ride is so quiet it's crazy. We are never that non active with each other, even coach doesn't say much throughout the entire ride. When he's quiet it's not a good thing.
It's about an hour and a half ride back to town, so eventually I knock out. I haven't had the dream about the accident in awhile, but today it decided to pop up again. It goes from when I'm hanging out at my house waiting to leave, to seeing the dog running across the street and then flipping over. On the last loud sound of the car hitting pavement I hear Luna's voice trying to wake me. Then I feel a slight shake and I wake up in a sweat. We are at the school now and Luna has a concerned look.
"You okay?"
I wipe away the sweat with my shirt. "Bad dream. But I'm fine."
She watches me for a second. "Coach is waiting for us outside."
I look out the window and see all the girls and Mr. Brooks in a circle outside the bus. I have a moment of dazing out before I remember that Luna is still standing behind me so I turn back to grab my things and follow her out of the bus.
"So..." Coach Brooks says when we get to the group. "Tough lose." He looks around at each of us and smiles. "But we can't deny that it was a great game." He puts a hand on Kelly's shoulder. "That shot was spot on, Kel."
She smiles a bit.
"And that plan was smart, Jessie." He looks at me. "Quick thinking."
I smile. "It was the adrenaline."
"Whatever reason why you put that together doesn't matter. It was a well thought out plan. If the refs weren't blind we would have had another full quarter at trying to win."
We all nod in agreement.
"This is our first and only lose. We are still number one in our division and going to the championships. Don't be so hard on yourselves." He looks at all of us. "Okay girls." He smiles. "Day off tomorrow. You deserve the weekend for all your hard work." He puts a hand out and we all do the same. "Count it down, Jessie."
"On three." I say unenthusiastically. "One, two, three."
"Sharks." We all say, but no one screams it as loud and hyped as we usually do. You can tell this game got to everyone. Not even Rachel, who would normally have something rude to say to blame someone for the loss.
"Need a ride?" I ask Luna as we look over at Uncle Byron's car.
She nods. "Yea."
We get in and he smiles. "Hey champ."
I half smile as he turns on the car. "Hey."
"How was the game?" He drives away from the school.
I look out the window. "We lost."
He doesn't answer right away. "I'm sorry to hear that."
"It was the Ref." I say. "He made a crap call."
"Why's that?"
"Kelly shot from the three point line to tie in the last few seconds of the game, but they say she stepped over it when she shot the ball to make it two." I look at him. "It didn't look like she stepped over the line."
"Did your coach fight it?"
"He said something about it, but I didn't hear specifics of the conversation."
"Mind you that if Rachel didn't foul the girl to begin with we could have had a better chance at winning." Luna says.
"Probably."
"Most likely. Not probably." She says.
"Doesn't matter now."
We pull up to her house.
"See you on Monday." She says. "Thanks for the ride, Mr. Montgomery."
"You're welcome, Luna. Have a good weekend."
She gets out and we take off.
"Rachel didn't listen again?" He asks.
"It actually wasn't fully her fault." I say. "She just didn't notice my signal for a specific play in time before she tried to swipe the ball out of the girls hand."
We talk for a bit as I tell him about the game. Then finally getting home he pulls into the driveway. I grab my bag from the back and get out. When I got inside no one is visibly around. I'm actually happy about that because I not in the mood to talk about the game.
I head upstairs, tossing my stuff over by the dresser and grab some clothes to take a shower. When I got back to the room after, I barely notice that Aria is at her desk as I put my dirty clothes into the hamper and throw myself onto my bed, facing the wall with my arms crossed.
Not even a minute later I feel pressure of someone leaning or sitting on the edge of my bed from behind me.
"You okay?" Aria says.
"Fine."
"Could have fooled me."
I don't answer.
"Well I know you didn't have a bad day at school because I have almost every class with you." She says. "So you're either upset about Mr. Fitz leaving or something happened at the game."
"Why does everyone keep saying that I'm upset about Fitz? I barely know him."
"He was your teach for months." She stops for a second. "Not to mention he saved your life."
"I've heard."
Normally a convo like this would have started with me giving attitude and ending in us yelling at each other. I'm not in the mood for it this time though so I just keep starring at the wall with my voice calm, but sad sounding.
She seems to pick up on it. "So what happened at the game to get you down?"
"You're gonna think I'm over reacting."
"You're clearly upset about something. It's obviously important to you if you're like this."
I inhale deeply and feel her put her hand on my arm. I turn my body around to face her and see that she looks pretty exhausted. I feel bad being upset about a basketball game when she's still going through a lot because of everyone thinking she's a liar.
I shake my head. "Never mind. It's stupid."
She smiles and brushes back a piece of my hair. "I want it to be like old times." She says. "When you got upset I was always there to listen. No matter what it was I found a way to comfort you, or got you to crack a smile at the end."
I look at her as she smiles a bit at me. Then I just shrug. "We lost the game by a point."
"I'm sorry." She fixes herself on the bed so that she's cross legged now. "That's not stupid though. You're passionate about sports. This is something you love and care for. I get that."
"So what advice do you got?" I half smile.
She laughs a bit. "This is the only game you lost. Just learn from the mistakes that happened today."
"Our mistake was underestimating the other team. They were the worst team last year, now they are one of the best."
From there I tell her what happened. How the first half went well, to how much we sucked in the third quarter and half of the fourth quarter. Then ending it with how we came back and almost tied. The look on her face every time I got excited about a play I described or how she got upset when I told the way it finished felt good. She always listens and that's the best thing about her.
"Despite the outcome, it sounded like a pretty great game. I'm sorry I missed it."
"It's okay."
She smiles. "You look like you could use a nap."
I nod. "Yea. So do you."
She laughs. "Yes. I guess I could take one."
I smile and look over towards the nightstand by her bed. I see a picture of my family and hers in a frame and my face drops. "Where did you find that picture?"
"What picture?" She turns to where I'm looking. "Oh." She half whispers. "It was on a memory card I found in a box in my closet from one of my old cameras." She looks back at me. "I decided to print it out."
I look back at it. "That was the day we went to Disney in Florida, during Christmas Vacation the year before I moved."
She nods. "It was."
All of a sudden my eyes start to tear up. It literally came out of nowhere. My emotions from the past week are finally starting to show. Everything from feeling helpless about not being able to help Aria with her situation, to holding everything in from the day I got thrown into the closet in Fitz's class and all the other times after that for getting picked on because I was sticking up for the girls. It's getting worse and seeing that picture just made me feel like shit, because I'm just noticing that I haven't talked about them in a while, I've barely thought about them. That made me feel so bad.
I turn back towards the wall and cover my head with my pillow, trying to keep in my tears.
"Hey." She says in a hushed voice and pulls away the pillow from me. "Jessie?"
I try to hold in my sobs when she takes the pillow. I can hear the choking sound from my throat as I do everything I can not to let it out.
"Jessie. Talk to me." I feel her get closer to me.
"Give me a minute." I try to say calmly, but my voice makes me sound like a baby.
Still facing the wall I feel the bed moving and her arms wrap around my body from behind, pulling me in close for a hug. My head is on her shoulder as her chin rests on the top of my head. That makes me completely lose it. I burst down in tears and she just rocks me as she continues to say. "It's okay. You're going to be okay."
"That's..." I can barely talk through my sobs. "That's what you always say."
I feel her nod. "I know. But it's something you need to hear every time, to know that you're not alone and you can make it through your emotions."
Most of that time I just listen to her talk. She tries to keep me distracted by telling me stories from her time in Iceland, until I eventually cry myself to sleep.
When I wake up sometime later I feel someone's body behind me. I slowly turn around and see that Aria is asleep with a book in her lap on my bed. I guess that was her way of watching over me while I slept. I smile to myself and readjust my body so I can get up. Then I half jump when I see that Aunt Ella is leaning up against the door. She puts a finger to her lips to stay quiet and waves me over. So I slowly get out of bed and walk to the hallway with her.
"You scared me."
She smiles. "Sorry, baby. I wanted to see what you girls were doing and I found you both asleep."
"Yea." I half smile. "Exhausting day for both of us I guess."
She slowly nods. "Your uncle told me about your game. That's a tough lose."
I slowly nod. "It's okay. Still on a good streak."
"I'm glad to see that your head is still on straight."
"If it wasn't I think I'd look nonhuman."
She shakes her head and laughs. "Your sense of humor is too much sometimes."
I shrug. "It happens."
She smiles. "Are you hungry?"
I nod. "Starving."
"Chinese is on the table. Me and your uncle have some things to do, so we'll eat later."
"Where's Mikey?"
"In his room. You can get him when you're ready."
"Okay."
She kisses me on the forehead. "See you guys later." She looks over towards the room. "Try to get her out of the house will you?"
I nod. "Yea. I got it."
She smiles and heads downstairs.
I go to use the bathroom and then let Mike know that the food is here when I got out. Then I decide to wake Aria up so she can eat with us. We all talk a bit and goof around. After dinner I talk her into taking a walk with me while Mike goes to a friend's house. We eventually end up at the playground by our house and sit on the swings. It's mellow and a bit chilly out tonight, but it feels better than being stuck inside.
