BUZZ! BUZZ!
I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket as I get a new text.
BUZZ! BUZZ!
It goes off again, but I can't answer it now because I'm in the middle of English class. I don't want Aunt Ella to rip me a new one for answering my phone instead of listening to her. Not that it's anything more than her boring us about how love concourse all in some new book she said she has been reading.
I can't even remember the name of the book she's talking about though. I'm too busy being dazed out as I stare outside the window. People are still talking around me, but I keep my eyes on the clouds as they go by. They are pretty dark, like it's gonna rain.
"Jessie."
I turn away from the window, Aunt Ella does not look happy.
"Can you pay attention."
"Sorry Aunt…I mean, Mrs. Montgomery." I still can't get used to calling her by her last name. Even after all the time she had substituted before becoming a full time teacher.
I hear a few people laugh at my accidental mess up and give her an apologetic look…again. This must have been the millionth time I've done it since she started. I mean Aria doesn't even accidentally call her Mom in the middle of class.
"So Shakespeare…" She continues and starts pacing down the aisles.
When did she start talking about Shakespeare? Are we going to have to write an essay about something I wasn't paying attention to for the last…I look at my watch…fifteen minutes! I've been dazing out for a full fifteen minutes of class without even noticing it. Was I really looking out the window for that long? I'm going to get an earful later for sure.
Just before the bell rings I'm told that I can leave early to head to my next class since I'm in crutches. Hanna is the one who will help me get from this class to the next one, and then will help me get to History since she has math with me. Aria will do the rest after that because we have the rest of our classes together. But thank God I'm getting out of here because I didn't want Aunt Ella pulling me aside for not listening. Had it not been for the fact I'm crippled at the moment I wouldn't have the luckiness to dodge her. I know I can have my moments of fastness on the court or running away from bullies, but I'm not as fast as the Flash.
When we get to door to math the bell rings. I just have enough time to move up against the locker so that I won't get run down by the crazy sophomores that are speeding out of that classroom. When it seems safe to move I head inside, Hanna right behind me and sit at my regular seat in the back of class while Hanna takes the seat to my left.
Mr. Parks is sitting at his desk grading some papers before he even realizes that me and Hanna are there.
"Hello girls."
"Hi Mr. Parks." We say at the same time.
"How was your weekend?"
We both kind of give each other a quick look for a second as if he's crazy. The entire town knows what happened with Ian, and that the girls were there when he was found. So why is he acting like he's oblivious to that fact? As for my ankle, it wasn't plastered around on the newspaper but it was a pretty big game that everyone knew what happened even if they weren't there.
So I just say what pops into my head first. "It was great. I broke my ankle." I decide to say.
While Hanna goes with, "I helped find Ian Thomas's dead body."
Now the fact that she said it in that flat tone she did makes it so hard not to lose my shit right then and there. I mean she said it so seriously, and with the most non joking face that I just want to burst out laughing.
He isn't even paying attention by this point. He's too busy texting now that he just nods half dazed out and says. "Awesome. Glad you had a great time."
I can't even keep a straight face anymore. I look right at Hanna who already started losing it enough that her face is turning red. I have to turn my entire body towards her and cover my face as I completely lose it and silently laugh.
The other kids are now walking inside and we were both at the point of looking like idiots with red faces. But no one says a word.
When I finally calm down I decide to check my phone, remembering that someone had text me. When I do I see that the number is unknown. I open it up and it says…
"Oh poor Jessie, always out of the loop it seems. Here's a little something to help ease your suspicions. Ask her how this happened and see if she gives you a straight answer this time. -A"
My eyebrows slant in confusion as I read another message that makes no sense. Ask who how what happened? Out of the loop about what? Who the hell is A?
Then I see that there is a picture attachment. It catches my attention and I click it to make it better to see. My face completely drops when I see that the picture is of Mr. Fitz and Aria in the middle of what seems to be them about to kiss. They are in a car and my best guess is that it's his car since he's in the driver's seat.
I'm trying to figure out where they are by looking at the background but it's a bit dark like it's night. However, the image is clear enough to see that their faces are leaning into each other very closely.
I feel my stomach do a summersault. "What the fuck." I whisper to myself just as Mr. Parks starts talking about spheres and cubes.
I cannot concentrate at all in class. I mean I couldn't concentrate through English class either, but after seeing that text now I'm really distracted and not able to pay attention. All I remember is Mr. Parks giving a surprise quiz based off of whatever we learned before the weekend and I am one hundred and ten percent sure that I didn't get a single question right. Whether it was because I didn't know what I was doing I couldn't even tell you. The picture of Fitz and Aria kissing is burned into my brain and that's all I can think of now.
By the end of the day I managed to keep my feelings in check enough that no one noticed my head being elsewhere most of the time to ask what was going on. I had a meeting for basketball after school and they all decided that they would wait for me so that we could hang over at the Brew for a little. Toby is gonna meet us there because him and Spencer have been officially dating for awhile and she invited him. He decided not to come back to school after he was dropped of the charges so he didn't have to worry about all the looks people would give him. I'll have to admit that I can't really complain about the guy because he's actually pretty cool. We've gotten a bit closer since they started dating.
After the meeting they wait for me outside Mr. Brook's room and help me get down the steps to the first floor. Then we all walk down the hall so that I can go to my locker. The school is completely empty now since the meeting lasted about a half hour or so.
I feel a tap on my shoulder and see that Hanna has that look like she knows something and points over towards her locker as she walks to it. I follow her and notice that the girls give us a look. It seems they have a silent agreement with Hanna and walk off to my locker.
"What's wrong?" She asks.
I concentrate on not tripping over anything while I lean up against a locker next to hers and give her a confused look. "Hm?"
"Are you okay?"
"Of course. Why wouldn't I be."
"I don't know. Aria told me what happened outside of the school with Amber this morning and that she broke your trophy. Thought you'd have said something about it by now."
I watch her for a second before I say. "Why does she tell you every little thing about my life but when it comes to hers, yours or the others personal life she won't involve me?"
Her eyes widen. I obviously took her off guard with that, but it's true. If this picture actually is a legit thing and she has kissed Fitz before then I bet you that they all know and I'm being left out as usual. I mean I get for a fact that being a sixteen year old kid and having some kind of relationship with a teacher isn't something that people would just blab out because it's kind of illegal. But if she has enough reasoning to tell them than why not me, I've known her forever. I should be the first person she would tell about something like this. Unless her reason is because of the fact it's Fitz and I have a weak spot when it comes to talking about him sometimes than that's understandable, but if it's just because she doesn't want me to find out since he's a teacher than I won't be as happy about the secret keeping of it. Either way I should know whether she's protecting me or not.
"You'd have to ask her that." She says. "I'm sure she has her reasons."
I nod. "I'm sure she does."
Her eyebrow goes up, "Why the sudden outburst of her keeping things from you?"
"It's not sudden. Just overdue."
"Jessie. You have your own secrets that you don't want to share with anyone too. You kept your family's death for almost a year from her. Whatever she keeps from you she has her reasons for, just like you do."
"Well this one is more serious for me to know."
"What are you talking about?"
My heart sinks as I realize I slipped up. "Nothing. Nevermind." Then I start to head over towards my locker. I see Aria giving Hanna a look but I try to act like I don't notice it.
"What was that about?" Em asks when I get next to them.
I prop myself on one crutch and she holds the other so that I can open my locker. "What was what about?"
"Hanna pulling you aside like that."
"Oh." I shrug, "She was just wondering why I haven't said anything all day about Amber bothering me this morning."
"Well you haven't." Spencer says.
"I know. But there's really no point of making a big deal. I'm exhausted always looking over my shoulder and being afraid she's going to show up, or holding a grudge about things."
They all nod. "That's a good reason." Emily says.
I nod in agreement. "Plus Mr. Brooks told me during the meeting that he gave Rachel and all of them detention for the entire week. I am probably going to get my ass kicked or something but I don't feel like thinking about it."
"If they actually attack someone on crutches then they'll look more like asses then they already are." Aria says.
I try to ignore the fact that she told the girls what happened, while also trying to keep my cool on the image of her and Fitz popping into my head again. "Doubt they care honestly." I'm having a bit of a hard time getting one of my books out so Em helps me. "Thanks." I smile at her.
"No problem."
I stuff the book inside my locker and start to grab another out of my backpack. "So how's Hanna's?" I ask Emily.
Awhile ago Em was offered a possible scholarship for a college. A scout told her that if she sticks around they could watch her more for college and then talk about it. She's only a junior but it was pretty cool that she got scouted so early. However, her mom had been planning on moving them out to Texas to live with her dad. Somehow her at the time girlfriend Samara convinced Em's mom that there would be millions of scouts trying to see her throughout the next two swim years but that if she moved away they wouldn't be able to have that opportunity. It worked but she felt bad that she was making her mom stay, so she convinced her to go to Texas to be with her dad and she could stay here with one of us. Her mom asked Hanna's mom and boom, Emily Fields was no longer moving.
"It has its moments."
"What you mean?"
"She has a habit on singing…loudly, while I'm doing homework."
I start to laugh, but then it fades very quickly when I start to get frustrated at myself for not being able to take out one of my books from my backpack again. I'm not able to keep myself from wobbling around on my crutch and just slam my backpack onto the floor, watching everything fall out.
"Jessie, chill." Em says as she bends down to get my stuff.
"Pie estupida." I say to myself while holding onto the door of my locker.
"What?" She asks in confusion, clearly hearing me
"She said, stupid foot." Aria says while Spencer helps me stand steady. "We'll help. It's going to take you a bit to get used to. Relax."
"Relajarse?" I repeat.
"Yes." Aria says. "Relax."
I look at her and I know I shouldn't bother saying this to her in front of everyone so I was going to keep it to myself. But my anger got the better of me, so instead I say it in Spanish so only her and maybe even Spencer would understand.
"Como?" I say. She goes to answer but I cut her off, "Como cuando se esta ocultando algo de mi?"
Translation? I asked, How? How when you're hiding something from me?
Now I see Hanna and Em completely confused. Spencer just gives me a look of Knock it off, because she clearly understood as well. Then Aria not only looks confused but seems a bit hurt at the same time.
"We'll talk about this later." Aria says and helps me pack what I need.
Ever since my aunt had come back all those months ago I decided to start teaching myself more Spanish so I could actually have full conversations if I ever ran into my family. Especially since Bobby is here. Aria started picking up more now that I live with her but doesn't like to speak in Spanish since she feels she sounds too much like a "white person" to do so.
"I need to go to the bathroom." I say and grab my crutch back from Emily. Then I head down the hall and into the bathroom.
It's no time at all that Aria follows behind me. "What the hell, Jessie." She asks when we both get inside.
"Don't talk to me as if you don't know what I'm talking about. I hate when you do that!"
She jumps a bit from my yell. "But I don't know what you are talking about. What am I hiding from you?"
"Why don't you tell me?" I pull out my phone, open up the text and angrily hand it to her.
She stares at me for a few seconds until I give her the Go on look. When she finally looks down at my phone the look on her face is enough for me to know that this A person wasn't lying. She turns so pale she looks like she is going to be sick.
"When did you get this?"
"Who cares? Is it true? Are you a thing with…"
She claps her hand over my mouth and gives me a serious look of wanting me to shut up. Then she looks around, as if making sure no one's here. All the stalls are shut but there are no feet visible from underneath the doors. Seeing no signs of eavesdropping doesn't keep her from letting go though.
I grab her hand away from my mouth. "What's going on?" I say and put my hand on her shoulder to get her to look at me.
She just continues to look around. "Not here."
"But..." Now she looks at me "Why would someone..."
She covers my mouth again "Jessie, I'm serious."
I try to back my head away and go to grab her hand again. This time she's too fast for me and slaps my hand away, while at the same amount of speed grabs the back of my head with the same hand to keep me from pulling away from her grasp. The force of her hitting my hand makes it bump one of my crutches to the floor. Then I feel her tighten her grip more forcefully against my mouth and she pushes me up into the wall, losing my other crutch.
"There's a lot you don't know but we can't talk about it here." The look in her eyes actually scares the hell out of me.
"Mm-mm-mm!" is what comes out in the rhythm of Aria! So I try to grab her hand again so I can actually yell her name properly.
"Stop." She says as I struggle to get away from her.
For a small girl she's stronger than she looks. She pulls her hand away from the back of my head, but manages to keep a very tight force to my mouth with the other and holds my head hard enough that I can't move more than my eyes. Then she grabs both of my hands with her now free one and holds them to my chest to keep me against the wall with as much power she can.
"We can't talk about it in school. I promise I'll tell you what I can but you have to calm down. Okay?"
I'm having a hard time breathing now and she knows it so she lets go and backs up, seeming to be really disappointed in herself. I slowly slide down the wall and gag a bit from lack of breath. Then she walks over with my crutches.
"I'm sorry." She says."I didn't mean to do that."
"What is going on with you?"
"A lot." She bends down and I flinch. She gives me a sad look. "Do you still want to go to the Brew?"
I try to get up on my own but can't, so I have no choice but to allow her to help me to my feet. Then she hands me both of my crutches. "Yea, but can we go to the sports store after the Brew." I say. "Since I'm like this I can't really do too much right now, so I'm going to keep it closed for a bit. But I have to still do the inventory."
I give her a look and I know that she gets what I'm saying. It's the easiest way to say something without making it sound suspicion. There's obviously something she wants to tell me but feels it's not safe to talk about it here.
She nods. "Okay."
"The girls can come too."
I see the fear in her eyes again as she realizes that it's not an option but more of a demand. I think she's starting to put things together that it's not just her I need to get to the bottom of secrets of. But she doesn't argue and we walk out the door.
