"Uhh." I groan in pain and open my eyes.
I can faintly see through my dazed vision heading through the hallway of Bobby's apartment building. I'm so confused on what's going on but I do notice that the left lens of my glasses is completely shattered. How did that happen?
An older lady sees me and approaches. "Is she okay?"
My hearing is very dim so I can just make out the words as she said them. But she's looking at the person that I just notice is holding me up. My arm wrapped around their neck.
"She bumped her head pretty hard." The voice comes right next to my ear. I can still barely hear but that definitely isn't Bobby's voice.
"Oww." My voice sounds far away, like I'm not even in the room.
"I have to get her to my car, thank you for being concerned." The voice comes again.
The lady nods and smiles. "Feel better sweetie." She says and then heads into the elevator.
I go in and out of consciousness multiple times as I'm being dragged down the rest of the hallway, through the doors and down the stairs from Bobby's building. We make a left when we get to the sidewalk, but instead of taking me to one of the parked cars nearby I'm being pulled to the left into the alleyway next to the building. I'm so out of it though that I don't even think it's strange to walk into an alley rather than on the open sidewalk.
The alley is darker than I thought it would be, for a second I can't see a thing. I'm not sure if it's my blurry vision from the clear hit on the head or if it's actually just a dark space.
I see a bit of light at the end of the alley now and a dark car that's just barely visible. When we get to the back of the building I'm set down onto the ground and they sit me up against the wall of the building. The light from the lamp above me hurts my eyes as I hear the clicking sound of a car being unlocked, and a silhouette walking towards it. This person is wearing the same black hoodie that kind of looks familiar as they head to the trunk of the car.
"You ruined my plans you know." The voice is louder than before and I notice that it's a girl's voice coming from the hooded person. It sounds a bit familiar but I can't pin point who it is.
I raise my hand to where it hurts on my head. When my hand comes down I see blood all over it. "I think I need a doctor."
"You should have minded your own business." She says.
"What are you talking about?" I weakly get out.
"Always asking questions and wanting to be part of the search."
I watch her dark outline still standing at the trunk of the car. My left eye seeing about five of the same image since it's broken compared to the right that is normal. The light from the trunk is visible, but it isn't bright enough to make out more than her hands going back and forth through it.
"Who are you? Where's Bobby?" My vision dims out for a second, but I try to keep myself awake.
I faintly see her body turn to me, but the light shinning down is still bothering my eyes so her face is blocked. "How about you stop asking so many questions?" She walks closer and bends down, balancing herself on the tips of her toes.
My vision is trying to register what's going on. I can see she's close enough that I should be able to see her, except that she has her hood up. Then the mixture of night and the alley light is still blurring out her face.
I can feel blood dripping down somewhere from above my eyebrow and onto my cheek. I see her raise her hand to my face, dabbing something onto my head injury that feels like a cloth. At first I don't know what to make of it, but then I decide to thank her.
"Don't thank me just yet. You have no idea what I have in store for you."
I don't like the sound of that at all.
She pulls back her hand with the cloth and sticks it in her hoodie pocket. Then she grabs something that's by her feet. I can't make out what it is but I hear what sounds like tape being ripped open and she grabs one of my hands.
"What are you doing?" I look down at her hand grabbing mine and see a thick gray roll of duct tape as she's about to put the sticky part onto my wrist. "Stop!" I yell in panic and pull my hand away as hard and fast as I can.
The force makes her go unbalanced since she's still on her tip toes and falls to the side. This gives me time to get myself up and start going back to the side alley where we came from. My vision is still a bit out of focus and this part of the alley is definitely darker than the back part. I'm able to see the street lamp from the sidewalk and I start to head to it.
Sadly I get about five wobbly steps in before I feel a tackle from behind. My glasses fall off when I slam into the concrete ground, landing on my side. Then hands flip me onto my stomach and sits on me. My arms get pinned between my sides and her legs, digging her knees into them to keep me steady. She squeezes her legs tight enough that it hurt my ribs and surprisingly is heavy enough that I can't even get her off. But I think it's more because I'm too weak and in pain to do so.
"Nice try Jessie. But not good enough."
"Heeelp!" I yell as loud as I can, but before I can attempt a second shout for help I feel leather slap over my mouth…hard. Fingers squeeze my face and I realize it's the gloves from the person in Bobby's apartment. What happened is starting to come back now.
"Don't you ever shut up?"
"Mmmmm!" I yell.
Her sitting on me while my stomach is face down on concrete is not comfortable at all. It hurts a lot and makes it hard to breathe on top of her leather gloves close to covering my nose as well as my mouth. Then I'm completely scared out of my mind and trying to keep myself from having a panic attack.
"Poor, Jessie. Always getting yourself into trouble, but can never get out of it on your own." She laughs. "The girl's aren't here to help this time."
My first thought is that this person is Amber. I mean she hates me enough to do something like this. But then I start to think back to when I got ambushed at Bobby's and she was too short to be Amber.
"Mmmmmm!" I yell, trying to roll to the side to get her off. "Mmmmm!" I don't know why I thought continuing to yell for help would change anything but it's all I can think of.
"Figured it out yet?" She says as if reading my mind that I'm trying to think who she can be.
I start struggling around again and she squeezes her knees harder. "Mmm!" I yell in pain.
"Let me give you a hint." She clears her throat. "Oh Jessie. Thank God you were here to hit that ball. It would have ruined my makeup!" She says in a high sing song voice and it hits me immediately.
My heart leaps out of my chest. "Mm-mm?" I get out for, Mona?
As if she understands my attempt to talk she yells. "Bingo! Thanks for playing." She laughs and it sounds not like her at all. Not her laugh, not her voice. It's too low to be miss popular Mona Vanderwaal.
My heart's racing now. Why the hell is Mona attacking me? Then it dawns on me that she's A. She said that I ruined her plans. That I ask too many questions and the girls aren't here to save me now. It's the only explanation I can think of for why she suddenly turned completely psychotic.
I squeeze my eyes shut. No, this can't be happening.
She starts to hum in her usual Mona tone and for a second I think I'm probably dreaming, had to be. I open my eyes to see that I'm still in the dark alley and my ears start to buzz, I can feel my heart in my ears now. Then I feel her move her body a bit forward, like she's going to get up. Instead of getting up though I realize that she's actually taking her hand off my mouth.
All I want to do is talk to her and see why the hell she's doing what she is and why she's done what she has to the girls. "Mon…" I start to say, but before I can even get her full name out I feel something sticky touch my lips.
I start to breathe heavy in panic as it smoothes out across my mouth. Then her hand pushes hard against my face to make sure it's secured. It's the tape I was hoping wouldn't reach my body.
"Mmm! Mmmmm!"
"Oh hold still, Jessie. Jeez!" She moves one of her legs and starts to slide down a bit off me, grabbing my hand.
I try to yank it away, but this time it doesn't work. I know I'm screwed as soon as I'm not able to get her off when she has barely any of her weight on me to pin my arm behind my back. She then grabs my other hand and crosses them both behind me to wrap the tape around my wrists together. I can feel my watch digging into my wrist now.
"Up you get sweetie." She says in her normal Mona voice when she finishes circling the tape around my wrists about five times then helps me to my feet.
She drags me over to her car that's now super blurry since I can't see much without my glasses. Then my phone beeps and she sits me on the end of the opened trunk. She smiles and digs into my pockets, taking it out.
"Oh look. It's Bobby. He says he's on his way home." She still has her high voice, as if trying to make it seem she isn't insane.
I lunge at her just because I don't know what else to do and she effortlessly throws me into the trunk of her car. I panic as I think she's going to close it and try my best not to think about how bad my claustrophobia is going to be. Instead, she has me watch her type a reply back to him. There's no way he'd believe that I'm writing back right? But then I realize he would, because I thought the unknown number was him when it was actually Mona.
She reads out loud what she's writing back as she types. "Hey, Bobby." She says, still seeming like her old self. "I hate to do this to you but the girls finally convinced me about going to the dance. They even surprised me with a dress *gags over the color yellow*. What am I Belle from Beauty and the Beast? Haha. Anyways, sorry to do this to you at the last minute. Hope Doug agrees to go. If not then hey, at least you didn't pay for that ticket! Sorry again. Don't hate me, because I love you! Have fun =)"
I close my eyes in frustration because she gets what I would say spot on. How messed up is that?
"Sent!" She looks at me with an evil smile. "He'll never know the difference." She goes back to her crazy low tone. "No one will even realize you're missing because he thinks you are at the dance and everyone else thinks you're with him. How great is that?"
You're crazy! Is what I yell through the tape as I start to rock myself back and forth, making the car shake in frustration and try to get my hands untied.
"Oh stop being so negative, Jessie. You're lucky I'm nice enough to just bring you along for a ride rather than dumping you on the side of a ditch with a knife wound or something. I mean I'm not that crazy."
My phone beeps again. She looks down then watches me with a smile that I don't like at all. It's creepy and I'm not liking my odds of getting out of this alive.
"He bought it." She says. "Oh that's great to hear." She says as she starts reading the text. "I'm glad you decided to have a change of heart for your high school experience. Have fun cuzzo. See you when I see you!"
I give her a mean look and kick the inside of her trunk. "Mm!"
"He's such a great cousin." She says to my outburst of saying Stop! "Not holding it against you that you changed your mind and ditched him. Smoother than I thought it would be."
She sticks my phone into her jean pocket and starts patting her hoodie pockets for something. When she finds it her eyes light up and takes her hand back out. I see her lift her hand to the light, looking at something I can't make out. Then she looks back at me and moves closer, sitting on the edge of the trunk.
She watches me for a few seconds. "I just had an idea that can make you a useful part of my plan. At first I thought this would be a waste and have to make you disappear completely before it came into full effect, but now I see it clearly. This was meant to happen. Thank you for that."
"Mmm!" I start to struggle around so much that the car starts to shake again.
"Relax." She leans in closer and moves my bangs out of my face. I flinch from her touch and scream so loud that she just laughs. "Will you stop trying to yell for help? No one is going to even notice you're gone."
I feel her start to move her hand to my neck now and I wiggle my shoulder to get it away. Then something sharp sticks into my neck. "Mmmmmm!" I yell in pain and fear at the same time.
"We'll be there soon."
I watch her as she gets up and my vision starts to fade. Oh no. I think and can feel myself starting to panic as my breathing gets heavier.
"Sweet dreams, Jessie."
She starts to close the trunk and before I even see the darkness hit me from it shutting, my eyes dim out and blackness swarms me.
