"Ria!" Five year old me yells as we're splashing around in the kids pool at Camelback Beach Water Park. "Ria, look at Unc By!"
"Oh my God." I slump down a bit in embarrassment as I watch myself butcher Uncle Byron's name.
"You're so cute." Hanna says laughing. "That was adorable."
"Can we turn it off now?" I ask, feeling my face turn beat red.
"No!" they all yell.
All four of us have been sitting in the family room for about fifteen minutes or so eating pizza and watching the home videos on the flat screen. I'm sitting in between Hanna and Aria on the sofa, Spencer is in the armchair next to us. My dad put every video ever made on CDs last year just before the accident, so there's been no problem watching them.
"Jeff!" mom yells. "Jeff, not so fast!"
We watch as four year old Jeff zooms past the camera and out of sight, then mom's body passes by. Dad is the one holding the camera and switches the view from me and Aria tackling Uncle Byron in the pool with Aunt Ella and Mike, to catching Jeff run face first into one of the slides on the water playground. Then the camera turns off.
"Oooohhhh." We all say.
I tighten my lips together in an attempt not to laugh and look at Aria. She turns to me and the look on her face makes me lose my shit as I snort from trying to hold in my laugh. She joins in and the others look at us like we are crazy.
"He just busted his face." Spencer says. "How is that funny?"
"Because he was fine." I say, cracking up.
"He got up right after that and ran up the steps to go down the slide like nothing happened." Aria adds.
I wipe the tears of laughter away. "I remember the look on his face when he got up. He was so excited and goes I'm okay! Can I do it again!"
"No he didn't." Hanna says and starts laughing.
I nod, wiping more tears out of my eyes, "He did. Oh my God, it was so funny." I fall sideways on Aria and continue to laugh my ass off.
She looks down at me and laughs harder at my reaction. When she's able to catch her breath again she says. "At the time we were too young to understand how hilarious it actually was, but now we do."
"Happy Birthday!" the screen comes back on and we watch as the camera goes through the crowd of people smiling and cheering. My family and random friends that I knew from New Jersey scattered around. There's little Bobby and Aunt Casey, my dad's parents, Katie and Uncle Tyler. The camera looks down and there's Jeff hiding behind a leg. Then it turns to me as I just walked through the door of the bowling alley with dad, now I know mom was the one holding the camera.
"This was your eighth birthday." Aria says. "I'm not there."
I nod, "Yea, this was when I went to visit my family in Jersey and they decided to throw a surprise party."
Ten year old Bobby runs over to me and practically tackles me into a hug, both of us laughing. He does his "What's that on your shirt?" trick and then brings up his finger to swipe my nose, him cracking up and me giving him a mean look because I hated that. Then nineteen year old Katie walks to me and bends down to be at eyelevel.
She smiles at me, "Hey birthday girl. How's it feel to be eight?"
I shrug, holding onto my dad's jeans. "Okay." I was always a shy kid, even with family because I saw some of them less than others. I probably saw Katie no more than once or twice a year.
She smiles at me, "Can you be on my team big girl?" she holds out her hand and I hesitate as I look up at dad.
He smiles down at me, "It's alright, Jessie. Go on."
I look back at her and grab her hand slowly, "Kay, Titi."
She picks me up and kisses my cheek, then walks me off towards the lanes with everyone following behind us.
All the girls look at me when the screen goes blank again. My eyebrows are raised in surprise because I don't remember being on good terms with Katie before. I have little memory of her when I was younger, but most of them are of us arguing.
"That's different." Is all I can think to say.
"Well…she seems to have had a heart at some point in your life." Spencer says.
I nod, "I was probably too little to start fights with. Obviously that changed."
My mind wanders a bit now, trying to think back to when I used to visit them in Jersey. When did our shitty relationship start? Then it hits me, it was sometime after she started getting herself into trouble during college. It had to be when she met Jordan.
A memory pops into my head of one time she got upset with me, "Jessie get out of my room." Katie says when I walk into it without knocking at the age of eleven, meaning she was around 21 or 22 at the time. When my grandparents died in her teen years mom was already married to dad, so she had lived with their aunt until she was able to move out. She didn't want to make mom feel obligated to take her in. So this is where she was still living when we visited her that day.
"I just wanted to play Mario Kart with you."
"Does it look like I have time to play with a runt like you?" she isn't looking at me as she said this, she's on her computer.
My emotions turn a little sad, "But Titi…"
"Jessie, get out!" she gets up, her face looking really mad as she chases me out of the room, slamming the door behind me. I think that was the first time she'd ever lost her temper with me and things weren't the same since.
I'm just about to share this information with the others when, "Wait, it's not working." My voice says from the TV and we look at it. "Oh, there it goes." We see the screen go from being dark because I'm blocking it to me running away. "Okay, kick it!"
Spencer comes into view as the camera is panned out and not moving, like it's on a table or something. We see me standing on the other end of Spencer and she kicks a soccer ball out of reach way to my right, so I have to run after it.
When I get it I kick it back to her, "Try again!"
This time it's aimed right to me, which was good. But she kicks so hard that it ends up being like a rocket and gets me right in the face.
"Ow! Spencer!" I sit down on the grass in the middle of the soccer section of the park, holding onto my nose in pain.
"Sorry!" Spencer yells and runs over to me.
Spencer looks at me in confusion from the armchair. "Was this when you were trying to teach me how to play soccer during the summer before seventh grade?"
I half smile and nod, "Yea, you almost broke my nose trying to pass the ball to me. You kicked way too hard."
The Spencer on the screen helps me to my feet and we walk over towards the camera. When we get closer my hands are covered in blood as I still have my hand clutching my nose. Spencer's hand goes towards the camera and the screen goes dark.
"Now I see why you never want to play soccer at gym." Hanna says.
We all laugh a bit and then hear. "Jessie, throw it!" We all look back and it shows me on the softball field as I caught a ball thrown to me at first base to toss the ball to the catcher at home plate just as the person at third was getting there.
"Out!" the Ump yells.
"Double play!" My dad's voice comes from behind the camera. "Did you see that! We got a star in the family!"
I jump up and down in excitement with my hands in the air, the whole team rushing over to me. The camera turns and gets a glimpse of Aria, Hanna, Spencer, Emily and… "Ali?" Spencer says, pausing it for a second.
"Ali hated sports." Aria says.
"I remember this." I say, realizing that the whole thing hadn't been recorded since my dad was having a hard time with the camera that day. He had just luckily got it going for this last play. "It was the championships of the last season I played rec softball in Rosewood before I went to Jersey."
"Oh yea." Aria says. "That's when I promised to go and everyone wanted to tag along."
"Not Ali." Hanna says. "She hated the idea."
"Hence why she looks miserable." I say, pointing to the fact that she's looking fed up with her phone in her hands.
"Still a great game though." Spencer says.
"We won." I say. "So hell yea it was a great game."
They all laugh and smile.
Aria pokes my leg and I look at her. "I'm glad to see you smiling, you had me worried."
"I'm sorry."
She shakes her head. "Don't be." She lays her head on my shoulder. "I love you."
I rest my head on hers. "Love you too."
I see Spencer smile and then she unpauses the video. We watch for a few more minutes as it shows me celebrating with my team and then goes blank again. This time it doesn't continue so Spencer gets up to switch CDs. This one said Random on it.
She sits back down and presses play. The screen goes black for a few seconds then the video starts. The camera's shaking but we're able to see what it's pointing at.
"Is that Em?" Aria says.
"I'll race you to the park!" Emily yells in the video.
"You're on!" my voice comes from behind the camera.
"Oh shit." I say. "Yea it is." Emily was riding her bike and we could hear the rolling noise of my skateboard. "I used dad's camera a lot when I came back."
"Jessie!" A voice from the video yells and the camera stops moving. "Jessie over here!"
My heart sinks as all three of the girls look at each other and then me. "No." I say, shaking my head.
"Jessie, I need to talk to you!" The voice says again.
"Turn it off." I say to Spencer.
The camera's still on Emily and she gives a weird look. "Is she actually noticing you?"
"Turn it off!"
"The remote isn't working!"Spencer says, then jumps to her feet and runs over to the DVD player.
Just as she's pressing the off button Mona's face comes onto the screen. "Can I…" She starts to say, then the screen blanks out.
My body's shaking but I'm not the only one who's reacting this way. All the girls are completely freaked out.
"She never goes away." Aria says, slipping her fingers between mine. I squeeze it and see her look at me. "You okay?"
"Fine." I say a bit too calmly, still staring at the blank screen. "You?" I look at her.
She nods but has a suspicious look. "You sure you're alright?"
"Fine. I'm fine." I stand. "I need to go to the bathroom." Then I take off.
"Jessie."
"Leave her." I hear Spencer say. "Give her a minute."
I don't even make it up the stairs. I stop halfway as I run out of breath from my anxiety starting to build up. "Calm down." I tell myself and take a deep breath. "She's not here. You're fine."
I sit down on the steps and out of habit to calm myself I close my eyes. It's a bad idea as I see a flash of Mona screaming at me again. It races my heart and I take a few more breaths, doing all I can not to let the tears escape me. I can just feel them beginning to form behind my closed eyes and a lump is now in my throat.
BUZZ! BUZZ!
I feel my new cell phone vibrating in my pocket. Mona still had it in one of her pockets when she fell over the cliff. So when they found it, it was shattered and not fixable. I just got this one delivered Saturday. It sucks loads because I lost all of my pictures and texts. So that means that the photos and old conversations with my family are completely gone. I guess it is a good thing that Aria asked to go get some of the videos from storage.
It takes me a second to even move my hand to grab it. When I finally do though I'm shocked to see Emily's name flashing on the screen. My eyebrows slant in confusion. "Hello?" I say, trying not to cry.
"Jessie?"
"Yea?"
"Hi." She sounds a bit exhausted and I can't blame her.
I take a deep breath. Hearing her voice is soothing my anxiety a bit. "Hey." I say. "Haven't talked in awhile."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Don't need to be sorry. You're going through a lot."
"So are you."
"I'll get over it." It gets quiet for a second. "Are you coming to school tomorrow?"
"I don't think so."
"Em."
"I know you want to help, Jessie. But I need to stay away from the outside world for awhile."
"Okay." I say. "Why am I the only one you've reached out to though?"
"I'm just trying to keep my distance for a bit. But Hanna had called me after you told them what happened to you. I wanted to talk to you awhile ago but she said to give you a bit of time before reaching out because you weren't doing so good." She gets quiet. "Plus you didn't have a phone."
I nod to myself. "True, but could have called the house phone or Aria's cell."
"I know. I'm sorry." She gets quiet again. "I just needed to make sure you were okay."
"I'm alright. I wish you'd come around though."
"It's too soon."
"But…"
"Jessie!" The voice of Mona comes blasting from the family room and to my ears.
"Jessie, stop whining!" Her voice echoes in my brain and I immediately start to shake.
"Spencer!" I hear Hanna yell.
"It was an accident!"
"What was that?" Emily says through the phone.
"N-Nothing."
"Jessie?"
I take a deep breath. "I have to go."
"But, Jessie."
"I'll call you later."
"Promise?"
"Yea, but you need to promise me that you'll call the girls. They are worried about you."
"Okay. I'll call them."
"Good."
"You sure you're okay?"
"It's just a little much right now."
"I get that." She says. "Text me or call me if you need me."
"Thanks, Em. You do the same okay?"
"Of course. And thanks for talking to me."
"Always."
We hang up and I have to run up to the bathroom as I feel myself feeling sick now.
