Fallon: End of an Era
Chapter Thirty-Four
"Do they have any leads so far?" Jax asked his right hand man.
"None so far," Chibs shrugged. "Although Jarry contacted me asking if I knew anything about the incident."
Jax sighed. "And I'm assuming nothing is pointing towards Dru's direction."
"Not one shred of evidence is going her way," he assured his President. "Not that there's any evidence to be found."
"Well, that's one thing in our favor."
Chibs looked at Jax and couldn't help the sympathy that filled his heart. This was a man that was about to lose everything. He'd already given away his children to keep them away from this life. Jax had been counting on Dru being at his side for the rest of his days. Chibs was the only one who knew the truth, and it was killing him to keep this secret from his brother.
"There's nothing that you can do now except wait everything out," Chibs told him.
"I can't wait, Chibs," Jax shook his head. "I have to find a way to prevent the inevitable."
"Jackie…" Chibs exhaled.
"Don't say it, Chibs. There's a way. I just have to find it."
"Don't you think that Dru, more than anybody, would know more about her situation?"
"I don't care if she does," Jax said. "I know more than enough. There are people out there planning on killing her, Chibs. That's all I need to know."
"And what possible plan can you come up with that overrides what these people want?" Chibs asked him. "She can't run, Jackie."
"So, I guess I'm just supposed to lie down and not do anything? Allow her to die?" Jax looked at him as if he was crazy. "You're fucking crazy if you think I'm gonna do that."
"What other choice do you have, brother?"
"Not that one!" Jax bellowed. "She's the only thing I want, Chibs; the only thing that fucking matters to me. I let my children go so they'll never know this life. I've done everything possible to make sure that this club continues. I was expecting…"
"You were expecting what?" Chibs questioned. "That you'd get a happy ending?" There was no hiding the truth in his President's eyes. "There is no happy ending to this story, Jackie. Not only because of what we've done, but because of the life that she's led."
"All because of us, Chibs," Jax stressed. "It wasn't anything that she had done to get where she is now. IRA took her because of her connection to us. They wanted to hit us below the belt, show us who was stronger and more superior. They did it. They honed her into a stone cold killer all while raping her to get back at us. That's on SAMCRO. That's on me. She's in this because of me," he sadly said.
"Don't blame yourself. Dru doesn't. She knew more than anybody, even four years ago, what could happen to the people closest to us. And if anything it wasn't because of her connection to us. It was because she was the daughter of a 9. Connor Fallon's daughter to beat all. Do you really think she was meant for anything else?"
"She was meant to be something other than a murderer," Jax softly told him.
"Aye, I agree. But truth be told, she has Connor's blood in her. Connor was a cold and calculated assassin. If anyone could be like him it would be his daughter. And she's filled those shoes like a champ."
"She didn't have to, Chibs. That's what I'm trying to say. She's in this just because of where she came from whether it was from Connor or not. She's a part of SAMCRO. She was the princess, still is. The Kings took that and ran with it."
"Jackie…" Chibs sighed. "Do you believe in destiny?"
He scoffed. "Everyone has the right to choose their own fate."
"Yes, they do. But there is such a thing as destiny. I think certain parts of our lives are mapped out for us before we're ever born. It was meant for Dru to be the Princess. It was meant for her to lose her dad and then her mom. It was meant for her to grow up and be a part of this club and not know anything else but the solid loyalty she has learned since she was a child. It was meant for her to leave Charming and return a different person. What was not meant was what she ultimately chose. She's right, Jax. Dru could've become someone else or came back here once she escaped the IRA, but she chose to continue the work. That was a choice of her own freewill. She chose this life, Jackie. She chose this particular fate."
"Because of my fuck ups!" Jax roared. "She never would've had to choose anything if I hadn't gone off half-cocked!"
"You going off half-cocked was your choice, Jackson," Chibs told him. "How you handled everything was on you. How Dru handled it was on her. You telling Dru that she shouldn't do this, shouldn't do that was not helping anything. You know her. You know she'll break her neck to go do it. On top of that, the devotion, the allegiance, that she has with us would not allow her to do anything less. You're not allowing yourself to see the person that she is. How could you ever think she'd do anything different than what we'd all taught her throughout her life?"
"I didn't want this, Chibs," Jax softly said. "I didn't want this. When she's gone I don't know what I will do. I've been counting on her being here by my side for the rest of my days. I want her. There is nothing else out there for me. My boys had to go. I couldn't have them living like this. Living like us."
"I understand that, Jackie. But those were your children. You can't make a decision for Dru."
"So, I'm just supposed to go home with her tonight and act like tomorrow isn't coming? I'm supposed to ignore the fact that there are people hunting her wanting to kill her?"
"If you have to, yes," his V.P. nodded.
Jax shook his head. "You're insane."
"I'm not insane if I'm right. And Jax, I'm right. I'm right enough for her."
Jax refused to listen to anymore that Chibs had to say. The man wasn't making any sense. Nevertheless, at the same time, he was.
About that time Tig came into the office without knocking. When he did that Jax knew whatever he had to announce was extremely important.
"Hey, uh, Jarry is out here. She's wanting to speak to both of you. It's about Marks."
Jax heavily sighed. "We'll be out there in a minute." Tig nodded and closed the door behind him.
He looked at his VP once again. "It cannot come to pass, brother. She has to live through this."
Chibs could only bow his head in understanding as Jax walked out.
Jax caught up with Jarry who had been left outside. No cop was allowed within the confines of the warehouse, let alone this woman. Even though Jarry had played the game all along, Jax still didn't trust her. There had only been one Sheriff he had trusted, and come to think of it, he hadn't seen good ole' Unser since he had told him of his mother's involvement in Tara's murder.
The woman in front of him had a permanent scowl on her face at this point. Jax understood that she was frustrated at this point; frustrated with the people surrounding her, frustrated with the situation, frustrated with the events that had taken place. He didn't care. She had taken this job knowing exactly what would come out of it. The Sheriff of Charming needed to be a specific type, and Jarry was struggling to be that.
"What do you need, Jarry?" Jax asked her.
"Would you like to tell me what happened to August Marks?" she questioned.
He shrugged. "I have no idea. I just got the call earlier today."
"Cut the bullshit, Jackson! You know exactly what happened."
"I know that he was shot. If you're asking if it was me you can turn right around and go looking for other suspects."
"I don't think you were the one to do it. The shot was made from almost a mile away. You're not capable of that, and I don't think anyone else in your club is either."
"Then why are you here?" Jax asked her.
"Because you're hoarding someone who does have that ability," Jarry answered.
Jax scoffed. "I'm not 'hoarding' anyone."
"Really? So, you can tell me where Drusilla Fallon is."
Jax quickly lost the amusement that had built up inside of him. "I have no idea where she is, and even if I did, I wouldn't hand her over to you."
"Are you admitting that she was the one to do it?"
"I'm not admitting anything. But I do know that she didn't do it."
"Why do you say that?" Jarry asked.
"Because she's been with me all day," Jax replied.
"You're covering for her, Jackson!" she yelled.
"I'm not covering for anyone," he growled. "Dru has been with me all day. I sent my boys away today and she was there to see them off too."
Jarry quickly changed her attitude. "You sent your boys away?"
"Yeah, I did," Jax nodded. "I had to. It was the only option left for them to have a chance at a normal life."
"Did Drusilla agree with your decision?"
He could only chuckle. "Actually she fought me on it. She was willing to sacrifice us for them to stay here in Charming."
"That's a hell of a woman there," Jarry commented.
"It didn't matter. I did it for the boys. They deserve to have a life away from here, away from the violence that always follows us around. They don't need to end up like me."
"Or end up like Drusilla," Jarry added.
"You don't know anything about Dru."
"I know enough." Jarry rolled her eyes.
"You know enough to fill a small cup, and I guarantee that the information you have in that cup is not enough to describe the person that Dru is."
"She's the person that took full responsibility for you. She placed herself in the position as an IRA member so you could escape the charges that were bearing down on you. And then she miraculously escapes those charges. That tells me she's got someone high up in her back pocket. The how or why of it still eludes me. I don't know what she's involved in, but she's in deep, Jackson. That tells me she's dangerous and that she's capable of some very criminal activities, which includes the assassination of August Marks."
"And why would she kill August Marks?"
"You were in bed with him. More than likely she killed him to protect you and the club," Jarry answered. "I've never seen such loyalty from a woman until I came across her."
"Well, there's one piece of truth about Dru that came out of your mouth. She's loyal. August and I were good business partners. She wouldn't have shot him."
"So, you and August were on good terms?" Jarry asked and Jax nodded. "Not from what I've heard."
"Well, I'm sorry that you heard wrong."
"The fact remains that I need to speak with Drusilla."
"Let me give you a piece of advice, sweetheart," Jax told her. "If you do so happen to get to speak with her, don't call her Drusilla. That just pisses her off."
"Will you tell me where she's at?" she asked, hoping against hope that Jax would give in.
"I don't know where she's at. She's been with me all day up until about twenty minutes ago. She didn't say where she was going."
"And you trust her?"
"I trust her implicitly," he replied.
Jarry nodded. She wasn't getting anywhere with Jax, and if he wasn't going to give up her location then neither would anyone else in the club.
"Do you know that Drusilla Fallon is legally dead? She goes by the alias of Natalie Harken," Jarry said.
"Then I suggest when you put out an APB on her, you refer to her as Natalie Harken."
Jarry huffed out her frustration and decided to take the defeat.
Dru had made her peace. She had to do one last thing before she could give up her will to live. It wasn't going to be pretty, what went down, but she would make sure that Jax never saw it. She had gotten his voicemail a couple of minutes ago warning her that Jarry was trying to locate her. Apparently Jax gave her a solid alibi at the time of Marks' murder. Not that she needed it since her fate was sealed. It made her heart happy to know that Jax had her back.
She picked up her phone and selected a number from her speed dial. The person on the other line was the only lifeline she had left. When they picked up, which she had no doubt they would, Dru gave a sigh of relief.
