"Who is Teaching Who"

It was early in the morning, and silence enveloped the whole forest. The usual chatter of the forest life was replaced by a great stillness. Except for one bush which was twitching ever so often. If one looked closely, they could clearly see that someone was hiding, not discreetly mind you, inside said bush. This person was obviously on the hunt for his body was poised to strike at any possible moment.

If my calculations are correct my target would appear… right… about… NOW!

As if from an unknown signal, their target burst through another bush from directly across them. The target was obviously looking for something since their eyes were darting left and right. The person pushed themselves deeper in the bush, hoping their target will not be able to see them.

Be still and don't let your fear consume you because the target can sense fear.

Hiccup moved a little more, to try and hide himself deeper in the bush, but he flinched when the leaves rustled behind him. He mentally cursed himself as the target stiffened at that sound and turned their head towards the bush he was hiding in and squinted their eyes.

Hiccup held his breath and stopped moving, hoping against all hope that he wasn't seen. All hope was lost when he realized that they were now staring at each other.

Without breaking eye contact, Astrid sighed. "What are you doing down there?" she droned, as if she was already used to what Hiccup was doing.

"Dang it!" Hiccup exclaimed while he crawled out from the bush. "I thought for sure you weren't going to find me this time."

Astrid snorted, but nonetheless smiled at him. "Well, that could've happened if you'd stop moving." She then spotted a sharp rock and started sharpening her wood axe. This was her third one this week since she was using it most of the time ever since Hiccup joined her daily training.

"I couldn't help it." Hiccup complained, as he stood up and walked to where Astrid was. "Bugs were crawling under there and I could've sworn that one them went in and out my pants."

Astrid mentally shuddered, even though she was tough she still thought bugs were disgusting, but didn't show it to Hiccup and raised her hand to stop his ranting. "Please stop before you make me sick."

Hiccup blinked and shrugged. He just couldn't understand girls and he was okay with that. He already spent a few weeks with Astrid but she was still a mystery to him, which he liked since he had an inquisitive nature.

Astrid inspected if her was sharp enough, satisfied, she dropped it on the ground and started on her warm up for her daily exercise. While sitting down, she looked up at Hiccup "So, what are you going to do today? Are you ready to join me on my training or are you still going to watch me?"

Hiccup raised a hand to his chin, thinking carefully. After a second or so, he glanced back at Astrid. "I think I'll still watch for now. I've noticed though that you're training routine will not fit with me."

Astrid stared blankly at him. "What does that even mean?"

Hiccup rubbed his chin in thought. "It means that even though we do the same training, the result may vary depending on your physical makeup. Height, weight, flexibiliy, all of these plays a part in how we can develop your body to their maximum efficiency."

Astrid frowned at the words Hiccup used. Sure, she was already getting used to his superior vocabulary, but that didn't mean that she didn't struggle in trying to understand him.

"So what you're trying to say is that since we both have different body types, even if we train together the outcome will always be different, is that it?" She tried to clarify.

Hiccup nodded.

Astrid rubbed her temples "Ok, since I obviously have no idea what you are talking about most of the time, how about you teach me too?"

Hiccup raised his eyebrow. "Teach you with what exactly?"

Astrid narrowed her eyes and Hiccup backed away from her in fear, instinctively. "I want you to teach me everything you know."

"Everything I know?" He asked. He wasn't entirely sure what she meant with everything but he was just going to go with it.

Astrid nodded eagerly. "Yup! You can teach me all those fancy words and stuff! I mean, to tell you the truth, I always envy how you are able to read and write!"

"Really?" His eyes lit up at her declaration. This was another thing that he didn't know about Astrid. To think of all people that could teach her to write, she chose him, Hiccup.

Astrid looked away, and tried to hide her blush that was trying to creep out to her cheeks. "Yes, if it isn't too much to ask, that is."

Astrid felt that it was getting awkward and so she coughed to get his attention. "So, my training today involves climbing trees. Not only does it help me build stamina, it also helps me in the near future whenever something is after me." She picked up her axe and looked back to Hiccup just to see him climb a tree easily. She smiled unconsciously at his eagerness to learn. "I see that I don't actually need to teach you how to climb then." Hiccup laughed awkwardly while scratching the back of his neck.

Astrid chuckled and shook her head in amusement at Hiccup's awkwardness. She wasn't going to tell him but she thought that that made him look cute.

"Alright, let's do this." Astrid muttered to herself as she tied a rock to her waist.

1 week later

Against popular belief, the children of Berk have their chores to work on, though it only took a little bit of their day. Hiccup and Astrid, particularly, didn't have as much free time as the other kinds because of their fathers. Hiccup, the son of the chief of Berk, was busy in the forge, helping Gobber with forging weapons, and armor. Hiccup hardly minded though since he was actually building up muscle as he spent his days there. While Hiccup was busy with that, Astrid, on the other hand, was being taught how to do household chores. Astrid hated it but she didn't have a choice. No matter how much she begged, her father won't let her go out until she finished all of her chores at house.

So both of them compromised, since Hiccup wasn't allowed to leave the forge until after lunch, Astrid would try her best and be done with her chores in the morning so that she would have enough time to rest for a bit before meeting up with Hiccup.

To Hiccup, Stoick was the kind of father that would ignore his children if they embarrass him. He also thought that Stoick wouldn't even care of whatever accomplishment he had done since he was a Hiccup. Unbeknownst to him, Stoick was just putting up a front for his townspeople. He loved his son but he didn't want the people of Berk thinking that he was soft. Hiccup didn't know about it, but Stoick was always keeping a close eye on him, hence the reason why he was working on the forge. According to Gobber, Hiccup was doing excellent work on the forge. Stoick was actually very proud of Hiccup when he learned that Hiccup was already molding swords and armor.

Stoick was actually in search of Hiccup when Gobber told him that his son had left the forge in a hurry, he said that he heard Hiccup muttering about the forest or something like that. It was today that Stoick was going to ask Hiccup if he wanted to hunting with him. Everytime he went hunting, Hiccup had this look on his face that Stoick could easily read. It was a look of longing, Hiccup wanted to join him. But Stoick wouldn't bring Hiccup with him, not because he was weak, but because he was afraid that something might happen to him. He wanted Hiccup to understand the dangers he went through. He wanted Hiccup to know that hunting is not something that didn't have its risks. But everytime he told this to his son, Hiccup's desire to join him only grew stronger.

This time... this time would be different. He was going to ask his son to join him. If he was able to find him, at least.

"Thor's sake" He swore as he had to duck low from a branch. "What in blazes is he doing here?" He muttered to himself as he peeked through a bush.

"Stoick? Is tha' you?" he heard a booming voice from behind him. Stoick looked back and was surprised to see a familiar face.

"Grudge? What in Thor's name are you doing here?" He looked over to his second in command.

Grudge Hofferson, one of Berk's strongest warriors and also the right hand man of the chief, he was a viking with a very scary reputation. Rumors around the village state that Grudge was the reason why the dragons only attack at night. They said that he once grabbed a gronkle's tail and ripped it out of the dragon's spine. They also said that the deadly nadder's spikes didn't affect the giant of a viking. Oh, people on Berk also knew that he was a softy to his daughter, Astrid.

"Astrid ran awai from 'er chores again!" Grudge grunted in his heavy accent. "I asked de' neibors and told mi tha' she wint ti the for'st. Ave ye seen 'er?"

"Sorry, my old friend. I'm actually also looking for Hiccup. Gobber told me that he went to the forest too." Stoick's eyes narrowed at that thought. "Do you think-"

Before Stoick could finish his question, they heard voices over the bushes they were walking by. Both of the adults looked at each other before they tried to peek over. From their vantage point, they could see the two children standing in the middle of a clearing each holding a stone axe with a wooden handle, probably made by Hiccup. Hiccup was also holding another stick where he drew some figures on the ground.

"As you can see in the drawing, the more force you exert in throwing a weapon, a spear for example, the higher the chance that you'll likely miss." Hiccup lectured as he pointed at a stick figure with long hair and then pointed to another stick figure. "But, based from my observations in your throwing skills, I think you have a knack for it."

"Really? I always wondered why I preferred throwing my axe." Astrid mused, looking at the drawing seriously. She then looked up at Hiccup with an inquisitive eyebrow. "So does that mean that I should start using a throwing spear rather than an axe?"

Hiccup shook his head and started drawing another stick figure, this time it was Astrid holding onto an axe. "Not exactly. Like I said earlier, you are better suited at throwing weapons, and it looks to me that the ideal weapon you should use is an axe. Here, let me show you."

Hiccup extended his hand to Astrid and she gave him her axe. Without any warning, Hiccup threw the axe on his right hand on a tree with precision both spying adults didn't know he had. The axe made a dull sound as it latched itself on the tree. "As you've seen, the axe can be an excellent throwing weapon, depending on the size and weight that is. Then , there's this."

Hiccup ran towards the tree and slashed the axe he was holding on to the side of the tree, creating a gash across the side of it. "If I could, I would've thrown the axe at that angle and the result would've been devastating and you'd be safe."

Astrid nodded her head and followed what Hiccup did. Stoik and Grudge slowly backed away and left their children alone, completely stunned by what their children were able to do, and at such a young age at that.

"Did ye just see that?" Stoick asked, still in shock from how much potential his son had shown.

Grudge could only nod his head in astonishment.

Stoik looked at his old friend knowingly. "You know what this means right?"

Grudge sighed, already guessing what his friend was talking about. "Yeah. So when ar' we going tell to those two?" he chuckled.

Stoick looked ahead, ideas already forming in his head on how to approach his son. "When the time is right."
