"What In Thor's Name Is Happening"
-Jump 2 years later-
For the past two years since Stoick brought Hiccup along for a hunting trip, their bond as father and son had strengthened to the point that it could not be broken easily like before. An example of this is was when Hiccup accidentally burned the forge down, and instead of shouting and lecturing him, he actually listened as Hiccup explained himself. As it turned out, it was the fault of another viking who entered the shop and started messing with the weapons that were still inside the fire pit, even as Hiccup told him not to touch them. As punishment, the viking was forced to rebuild the forge, supervised by Gobber of course since he was also mad at him. After that day, most vikings would blame Hiccup for something that was actually not his fault.
Although, there were some that refused to acknowledge that fact. "Looks like my favorite punching bag is here!" Snotlout gleefully shouted as he grabbed Hiccup by the back of his tunic and dragged him away from the forge he was going to go to. No matter how much worth Hiccup was in his father's eye now, he was still considered a taboo to the others, especially by his cousin. "Did you know that dad has finally taught me how to use sharp weapons? Not only am I one step closer to kill my first dragon but I think I've also found a new way to have fun with you! Are you excited as I am?" He laughed along with the twins who were trailing behind them.
Before Hiccup could reply with his usual dry humor and making the situation worse for himself, Astrid grabbed his arm and pulled him back, breaking Snotlout's hold on his tunic.
"Hey! What's the big id-" He was cut off as Astrid punched him in the face. When Snotlout fell back, Astrid used that opportunity to kick him on the crotch. Tuffnut winced and released a low 'oooooohhh' as he covered his crotch area, almost feeling the pain Snotlout was obviously feeling right now.
Astrid looked down at Snotlout as he clutched his groin in obvious pain. She glared viciously at him before snorting and walking away with Hiccup in tow.
"What just happened?" Tuffnut asked slowly as he watched the two walk away. "I wasn't seeing things right?" He asked as he turned to his sister, confusion on his face.
"Did…Did Astrid just protect Hiccup? The Hiccup that causes trouble wherever he goes?" Ruffnut asked, blinking in astonishment, before grinning mischievously. "Looks like things are getting interesting around here. Am I right?" She turned to her brother for confirmation only to see him pick his nose with a smile on his face. Pissed at being ignored, Ruffnut punched her brother on the face before stomping off, cursing about how boys are idiots and leaving behind Snotlout and Tuffnut both groaning in pain.
Thoughts were running through Hiccup's mind as he continued following Astrid to who knew where. Most of them were about where Astrid lecturing him about how he should be standing up for himself and not let others walk all over him. It wasn't that he didn't want to be treated with respect, it was just that he didn't want Snotlout and the twins to take his bullying to another level. He sighed and decided to voice his worry. "H-Hey uh... Astrid?" He stuttered, mentally smacking himself for it, but she ignored him. He figured that she probably was thinking about something and decided not to interrupt it.
They stopped at a clearing in the forest, where they usually trained, as Astrid sat down on a rock to sharpen her double-sided battle axe, it looked like the axe that was drawn on the ground during their first hunting trip with a little bit of influence from Hiccup, although he was the one who forged the axe in the first place. She looked up at him, face unreadable, as she beckoned him to come closer. Hiccup, not wanting to make her angry, walked slowly to where she was sitting, ready to run at a moment's notice if Astrid decided to lash out at him. When Hiccup was in reaching distance of her, Astrid suddenly grabbed him by his tunic's collar, and yanked him even closer. Hiccup's immediate reaction was to close his eyes, hoping that the beating he would get would be quick. To his surprise, instead of a punch he received a kiss to the cheek instead. Hiccup's eyes snapped open as he looked at Astrid in surprise after she pulled away, the latter was blushing furiously as she tried to hide her embarrassment by glaring at him.
"Wha-What- waz the-that f-f-for?" he shakingly asked while his finger touched the spot where Astrid kissed.
Astrid's blush deepened, as she distracted herself by playing with her braid. "Nothing really. I just wanted to do it."
Hiccup's eyes widened even more when he realized what Astrid just said. Did she just say that she wanted to kiss him? A kiss on the cheek at least but the message was still the same. Astrid Hofferson, the perfect viking, liked to kiss Hiccup, the village screw up. Hiccup furrowed his eyebrows as he was about to do something that no viking man-err, boy, has ever done in history. Confess their feelings to the girl they like.
"H-Hey Astrid. I-I need to ask you something." Hiccup gulped as he turned even redder than before.
"Sure. What is it?" Her previous nervousness gone and was replaced with curiosity.
Ok, you can do this Hiccup. Just be honest with her and maybe, just maybe, everything will turn out great. He mentally prepped himself. "I want to know what you think of us."
Astrid cocked her head to the side, obviously confused. "Us? I don't get it."
"You know… Us." Hiccup gestured to himself then to her.
Astrid's eyes widened when it hit her. Oh Thor! I-Is he asking me out! Her breathing started to quicken, and she had to turn her back to him since she knew that she was blushing. Calm down Astrid, it's just Hiccup. She glanced back at him and realized that she made a mistake since she could see the anticipation in his eyes. Ok, bad idea! Oh no! He's probably waiting for my reply! What do I do?!
Hiccup was getting anxious as Astrid refused to look at him and he was also regretting asking her. He mentally slapped his face. Idiot! Look what you did! She would probably start ignoring you now! Goodbye world! Goodbye happiness!
Astrid looked with a look of determination and once again grabbed his tunic to bring him closer. Instead of kissing him like before, this time she whispered into his ear. "I really like you, Hiccup, truly I do, but we're still young and I want you to ask me again when we're older, ok?" She once again kissed him on the cheek and smiled sweetly at him before completely pulling away. "Now that that's over with, let's go back to training." She said in her normal voice like the previous conversation never happened. "Our training today should be about agility and dexterity. So this is what you should do…"
Hiccup wasn't listening though, his mind was in Valhalla. She said she liked me. She said to wait for a few years before asking her again but she didn't say no. With that thought in mind, he had the most goofiest smile a kid could ever have.
"… and that's about it. Are we clear?" She asked while she was picking up her axe. Astrid furrowed her brows when Hiccup didn't reply. When she looked back Hiccup still had the the goofy look on his face when she started talking. Astrid snorted a laugh, "Hiccup? Oh gods! Did I break you or something?" She asked as she waved her hand in front of his goofy face. When he failed to respond, Astrid resorted to punching him on the shoulder to return him to the world of the living.
"Wh-Whut is it?" He asked in a daze.
Astrid just shook her head before walking back a bit. "You are such a dork." She giggled when he just gave her a look of confusion and she decided to start warming up.
-Haddock Household-
Ever since their first hunting trip together, dinner in the Haddock household had been much more pleasant where both family members actually share their day to each other without it being awkward. Stoick had also started involving Hiccup with how his meetings went, Hiccup wasn't in the meetings themselves but Stoick would tell Hiccup about them and ask him for his opinions on the matters. Expectedly, some of Hiccup's inputs actually helped Stoick in determining in what steps he should take. He also showed Hiccup some treaties that he had written for the other tribes.
Hiccup, on the other hand, would tell Stoick his days in the forge. Now that Gobber actually took Hiccup seriously, albeit only a little bit, he would allow the boy to create some of his weird inventions and make the less intelligent vikings try them out. Some inventions were actually quite useful while the rest... well... being a viking is an occupational hazard.
"Hiccup?" Stoick started and made Hiccup look up at him.
"Hmm?" Hiccup still had the goofy smile on his face. It had already been a few hours since his training with Astrid but to him it felt like only a few minutes ago. No one could actually blame the kid since part of his dreams had already come true, and he was only twelve for Odin's sake!
"Is something wrong son?" Stoick asked worriedly, as Hiccup failed to look at him in the eye.
"Oh, it's nothing" Hiccup sighed contently.
"Oh ok" Stoick cleared his throat. "So Hiccup, what do you think of young Astrid?" He asked casually, trying to be discrete but failing on it and would've been called out if Hiccup was actually paying attention, which he wasn't.
When Hiccup heard her name he sighed dreamily again, resting his chin on the palm of his left hand on the table.
Stoick raised a thick brow, clearly at a loss to how his son was acting at the moment. "I take it you like her then?"
Hiccup just nodded dumbly. Of course he did. What kind of idiot would not like Astrid Hofferson? Except for the adults, that is, cause that would just be weird and wrong.
"Well" Stoick laughed a little, mistaking Hiccup's nod as a sort of agreement. "That's should makes things easier, I guess..." and he continued eating, looking at Hiccup worriedly as his son stopped eating entirely.
