Hermione stayed in the hospital until the end of the holidays and she was told she can return to Hogwarts. Ginny stayed with her the entire time, she didn't want Draco to come in to see her and he was heartbroken. She sent him a letter home with Ginny one night. The letter read:
Dearest Draco,
I'm really sorry I haven't let you come in to see me. I know what I said the day it happened, that I love you and don't blame you at all and I still want to be with you. All of that is true, but I don't think I can be with, you deserve so much more than me. You need to find a girl who isn't broken like I am, someone who you can make happy and someone to make you happier than I could ever have made you. The ring is on the floor in the bedroom I stayed in at your house, it fell off my finger that night and I never got to grab it before we left. So that ring will still be in your family. Just find someone to make you happy, something I don't think I could ever accomplish. I still love you and always will, but I cannot look at you without thinking about that night and being sent back into that spiral of fear. I am so sorry Draco.
Love always,
Hermione
When Ginny got home that night she gave the letter to Draco with a sorrowful look on her face. He went into the back garden to read it. Everyone watched as he slumped down onto the grass and put his head into his hand and shook with sobs. His mum went out there to comfort him but he didn't want it. He stood up and just ran. He didn't stop. He had no idea where he was now. He was sad and frightened and found a little rock cave that he could just fit into, to sleep for the night.
It was two weeks into January and the term was in full swing. A lot of homework from classes. Hermione had been excused from classes for the first two weeks, so her friends would bring her homework and take it in for her. She had to go down to see Madam Pomfrey, who had returned to Hogwarts, so Professor McGonagall was no longer the matron. No one new why Madam Pomfrey had left in the first place. The doctor at St. Mungos told Hermione to be sure to see Madam Pomfrey two weeks after returning and before attending classes. So that's what she was going to do.
She got up, went down to breakfast and she saw Draco looking at her. She avoided his stare and got up, leaving the hall. She went up to the hospital wing and Madam Pomfrey was expecting her.
"Ah, Miss Granger, I've been expecting you. Your doctor from St. Mungos filled me in on everything that happened over the holiday. I'm sorry that that all happened to you. How are you feeling?"
"I am too. I'm feeling alright health wise, but I am emotionally wrecked. I lost the love of my life over this because I can't bear to look at him without being reminded of what happened and sent into a downward spiral", she explained. Madam Pomfrey nodded solemnly.
"I understand why you feel that way. It may take a while to get over it. It was a very traumatic event in your life. So what I'd like to do so you can continue going to school is have you come in once a week during a free period and we can just talk. And I will give you examinations every once in a while as well. Starting today. I understand that we need to do a pregnancy test?" Hermione nodded. "Okay, so we'll do that and then I will get the results in an hour or so", she told Hermione, she nodded again.
Madam Pomfrey did the test and allowed Hermione to have a nap in one of the beds while they waited for the results. Hermione had fallen into such a deep sleep, something she hadn't had for a month or so. So Madam Pomfrey marked down the results and allowed Hermione to sleep a couple extra hours. Hermione awoke with a start.
"Where am I?" She asked, panicked.
"You're in the hospital wing at Hogwarts dear", Madam Pomfrey told her. "Bad dream?"
"Yeah, I thought I was back in that nightmare. Thank god", Hermione sighed. "What time is it?"
"Nearly five, I let you sleep a couple extra hours. You looked like you needed it".
"I did. Thank-you Madam Pomfrey. Did the results come back?" Hermione asked.
"You're welcome dear. And yes they did", she paused. "I'm afraid you're pregnant Hermione", Hermione's world came crashing down. She broke down into tears. Madam Pomfrey stood up and moved to sit beside her on the bed and wrapped her in a hug. "It's okay dear, you have options", she told her.
"I refuse to kill an innocent life. And I don't want my baby growing up thinking I don't love him or her", she said.
"So you want to keep it?" Madam Pomfrey asked.
"Yes", Hermione sobbed.
"Okay dear. We need to talk to the headmaster and your head of house", she said standing up. She owled them to come down to the hospital wing. She allowed Hermione to owl Ginny to come down for support. Ginny showed up first with McGonagall and Dumbledore came a few minutes later.
"Hey Hermione, what's wrong?" Ginny asked wrapping her arms around her, but she figured she already knew.
"Young Miss Granger here, is pregnant. She is pregnant because of the incident that happened over the holidays", Madam Pomfrey told the three of them.
"Please don't expel me!" She sobbed.
"Miss Granger, why would we expel you over something you had no control over?" McGonagall said looking at Hermione, who shrugged and gave a big sigh of relief.
"What are we going to do then?" Hermione asked.
"We are going to hide it as best as we can so you don't get ridiculed for it. I will grant you and Miss Weasley a day off to go into Hogsmeade to find loose clothing for you to wear and Professor Dumbledore and I will have all new uniform clothes made for you that are much bigger. You'll be able to pick those up on your day in Hogsmeade. I will put the order in tonight and we'll give you your day off after I receive word about those being ready for pick-up", McGonagall explained. Dumbledore nodded in agreement.
"Thank you so much Professors", Hermione said and was able to let out a small smile.
