A few days passed, Arthur was unable to get a pass for Hermione's parents, mostly for their safety. She figured that's what would happen, but it never hurts to try. The doctor had healed her as best as he could with magic, she still had to do most healing naturally, but she was allowed to move now. She was sitting in a chair, staring out the window when Ginny got back from showering and changing at home. She was with Hermione 24/7 and Hermione greatly appreciated it.
"You ready to go see your babies?" The doctor asked, walking in a few minutes after Ginny.
"Yes. Can Ginny come?"
"Of course", he smiled and Hermione got up to follow the doctor. He took them to the NICU and to the room with her babies in it. They walked in and she almost broke down again. Both babies were in incubators, with a lot of wires attached to them.
"They're so tiny", Hermione said, tears streaming down her cheeks. Ginny put her arms around Hermione.
"They are. But they're stable and we're going to do as much as we can to keep it that way. The boy was born first, he's 4 ½ pounds. The girl was second and she was just under four at 3 pounds 10 ounces. Because they're fraternal twins, which means there were two placentas, we figured out that the placenta that detached was hers, which would be why she wasn't crying or moving when we got her out. But we got her out just in time", the doctor explained. "Official birth time is July 31st, 1998 12:35 am and 12:38 am", he told them. They looked at each other, realizing they were born on Harry's birthday.
"Harry's birthday", Hermione whispered. "I totally forgot and never thought about it", she told Ginny.
"I think we all forgot about it", Ginny told her. She nodded. They would wish happy belated birthday to him when they saw him next.
Hermione and Ginny sat between the babies, in the chairs provided. They talked to both of them, in hopes it would help somehow, hearing the voices they heard through Hermione's belly for 7 ½ months. They were able to put their hands through the holes in the sides of the incubators. Hermione did so first with her son. She held onto his tiny hand with her forefinger and thumb. She did this every day for the next two weeks. There hadn't been any improvements in either baby, and Hermione was beginning to wonder if there would ever be. She cried herself to sleep every night, with Ginny by her side, as Harry and Ron had started new jobs with the Ministry. Hermione was grateful Ginny could stay with her, but she had to go back to Hogwarts in two weeks' time. She had no idea how she would get by once Ginny was back at school. But she refused to let Ginny postpone her seventh and final year, even though Ginny wanted to.
"Ginny, no. I will not allow you to postpone your last year at Hogwarts. You need to finish and graduate and find a good job, or go to one of the wizard colleges", Hermione told her. Finally Ginny nodded her head and promised she would finish school. One afternoon Harry and Ron showed up with a letter to give Hermione. It was from Narcissa. It had been a month and a half since she saw or spoke to Draco; she wondered why Narcissa would write to her.
Dear Hermione,
Hello, it's Narcissa Malfoy. I know you must think it's weird that I'm writing to you, but I just had too. Draco has not been himself since you gave him that letter and broke up with him. I understand where you're coming from; it was terrible what my ex-husband did to the both of you. But we all know that you were affected the most by it. Draco told me about the events that happened at Hogwarts, and I believe everything had been leading up to the final show, the break-in. I just wanted to tell you again that Draco and I are both extremely sorry about what happened. I was hoping you could at least write him a letter to let him know you're okay. We really miss you Hermione.
Love,
Narcissa, xoxo
Hermione was in tears by the time she finished reading the letter. She showed it to the others. Ginny said she should, but Harry and Ron thought otherwise. Hermione didn't want Draco to kill himself over her or do something else just as stupid. So Hermione decided to write him a letter.
Dear Draco,
Your mum wrote me a letter telling me that you haven't been yourself lately. I know how badly I broke your heart and I am truly sorry. It broke my heart to have to do that, but I couldn't ruin your life any further than I already had. I did what I had to do to prevent hurting you more than just a break-up. I love you, I always will. But please, let me go. I don't want to cause you or your mum any more pain. That's what I do, and I don't want to do it to you or your wonderful mum. I miss you, I always have and I always will.
Love,
Hermione, xoxo
Hermione sealed the envelope and gave it to Harry to send via owl to Draco.
A/N: Sorry it's a lot shorter than most chapters. This was more of a filler.
