The next morning Hermione woke up and was surprised the twins slept through the night. She thought for a second and then panicked, running to their room to check on them. She looked into each crib and put her hand in front of each face, they both were breathing. She breathed a huge sigh of relief and lifted them both out of bed. They stirred as Hermione walked down the stairs to the kitchen. She placed both babies in the high chairs and got herself some cereal, as it was almost 9:00 and she had to go meet Dumbledore.
"Come in", Dumbledore said softly after Hermione knocked on the door.
"Hello Professor Dumbledore", Hermione said putting the car seats down and taking a seat.
"Hello Miss Granger", he smiled.
"You wanted to see me this morning?"
"Yes. I just wanted to tell you that we will be giving you a week to settle in and then you will be sitting in class with Professor Burbidge for a week, then you will be teaching your own class", he explained. She nodded and then he answered her unasked question. "Madame Pomfrey will take care of the babies in the hospital wing while you're teaching".
"Okay, that sounds good. Thank you so much for this opportunity", Hermione smiled, putting her hand out for him to shake. He shook her hand and told her she could go now. He gave her a schedule of all classes she will be sitting in and all classes she would be teaching after.
During her first week back at Hogwarts, Hermione settled in and got to hang out with her old friends who were in their final year. She thought it was a little weird, hanging out with them, being a teacher, not a student herself, but she didn't care. No one said anything to her about it either, so they just went about their business. Luna loved the babies and wanted to play with them as much as she could, as did Ginny, since she hadn't seen them much after going back to school.
It didn't take long for Hermione to get used to being back at Hogwarts; this was her home away from home. She fell into a routine aligning with her coming schedule, and was trying to get the twins onto the same routine so it was less of a shock when she had to get them up early and take them to Madam Pomfrey. That first week flew by and before she knew it, it was time to sit in on classes. She woke up at 7:00 in the morning and got right into the shower, while leaving the babies sleeping. Once she was done and dressed it was 7:30. She didn't wear much make-up, she threw on a little eyeliner and that was it. She woke the babies and took them downstairs and got all three of them breakfast.
She packed the diaper bag and put the twins in the stroller, heading to the hospital wing. Hermione had to levitate the buggy up and down the stairs, but she made sure the babies were buckled in tight before doing so.
She got to the hospital wing and waked to Madame Pomfrey's office in the back. She had a playpen set up for the twins to play and sleep in. They weren't walking yet, so it was fine.
"Thanks again, so much Madam Pomfrey", Hermione said putting the babies in the playpen.
"It's no problem Hermione, I'm glad to be of help. And please, call me Poppy", she said.
"I'll try. I guess it's just so weird because I'm only a year out of school and that's what I had to call you for years", Hermione explained.
"Understandable. But you best be off, you don't want to be late", she smiled.
"Oh, yes. Uh, I wrote down their schedule for feedings and naps and packed all the essentials and some toys. And teething rings, they've both got a few coming in", Hermione told the witch.
"Alright dear. Don't worry, they'll be fine with me", she ushered Hermione to go to class.
By 9:00, she was sitting to the side of the Muggle Studies classroom as all of the students filed in. Professor Burbidge introduced Hermione to the class and informed them that she would be sitting in the class that day and their other one later in the week. They all said hi to her and then class commenced. Hermione took a lot of notes during the class on teaching techniques and how to talk to the students.
The week that Hermione sat in on classes went well but she was nervous to be thrown out of the nest. Her first day by herself, she woke up a little earlier to make sure she was prepared but didn't get the twins up until the set time in their new schedule. She made some tea and then fed the twins, trying to calm herself down.
Hermione took the twins to Madame Pomfrey and headed up to her first class she was teaching. She was happy that most of her classes were first years, as it was now a mandatory class for first and second years, which was why they needed a second teacher. But after that, the students could choose if they wanted to take it. She was happy to learn that all of her old school friends in their 7th year were taking the class and she was their teacher.
"Good morning class", Hermione smiled as the first years walked in.
"Good morning Professor", they chimed, sitting down. Hermione smiled at the sound of that. Professor, she thought, I like it.
"So as you know, today is my first day. So I would like all of you to know a bit about me", she started. They looked relieved that she wasn't gonna make them work… yet. "My name is Hermione Granger; I graduated from Hogwarts last year, at the top of my class. I decided to come back to teach as learning and being a 'bookworm', is something I really enjoy. So I figured teaching was the next best thing to do since I'm done school", the Gryffindor students giggled as she air quoted and called herself a bookworm. The Slytherins scoffed and rolled their eyes.
"My father says you're nothing but a mudblood", one of them stated. Hermione looked at this student and started walking towards him.
"And what is your name?" She asked softly.
"Damian Malfoy", he sneered. Hermione looked closely and realized how she never saw the Malfoy smirk and white blond hair. She knew Draco had told her he was adopted, but he had the white blond hair of Lucius and Narcissa, which she never thought about until now.
"Let me guess, you're the son of Lucius and Narcissa and brother to Draco?"
"That's right. Except I'm not adopted like he is", he smirked, proud.
I never knew he had a brother, Hermione thought to herself. "Well Mr. Malfoy, 50 points from Slytherin and you will be serving detention tonight", Hermione told him and walked back to the front of the class. All the Slytherins sighed at him and the Gryffindor's laughed. "Quiet now please. Now what Mr. Malfoy has said is true, but that is an extremely rude and offensive word to be used, especially in a classroom. I am indeed, a muggle born. I never knew about magic until I received my Hogwarts letter", A young Gryffindor girl raised her hand. "Yes?"
"If you never knew about magic until you were 11, how did you become so good to be the top of your year?" She asked.
"Before coming to Hogwarts, I always strived and excelled in school in the muggle world. When I came here, I knew it was going to be different, but that didn't stop me from studying every day for hours at a time and making sure homework was complete", she explained. The young girl nodded. The bell rang and the students were off to their next class. Hermione told them they'd be working next class.
Hermione introduced herself to every class she taught for the first time that week. And after that, they got to work on studying muggle devices, toys and learning the way muggles do things.
