Months pass after the day Prim picked up the cake from the bakery, Katniss wants to go back everyday and wait for her mother to visit but she knows that the chances of that happening were slim right now. Granted Peeta would even allow her to sit there and wait all day, it's not that he's controlling her it's just that he'd be asking her questions regarding this sudden interest in the bakery... Even if she'd tried playing it cool he would still be suspicious of her. Plus she doesn't want to lie to him, so keeping quiet seems like the right thing to do for now until he brings the subject up again.
Ever since they shared that morning omelette incident Katniss and Peeta made breakfast together. Sometimes Peeta woke up before her and made fresh cinnamon rolls to enjoy, she always knew when he was making them too. The aroma of vanilla and cinnamon would wake her up, if she wanted to she could go downstairs and help Peeta frost them but she stayed put this morning because she wanted to Stay in bed just a little while longer.
Staying put turned out to be a good idea after all, because Peeta came to wake her up. As easy as it seemed Katniss couldn't keep a straight face when he tickled her feet to see if that would wake her and it does.
"Morning sleepyhead, did you have a good night?" She smiles at the new nickname she's been given.
"Mmh.. Yeah sorry I didn't wake up earlier." Peeta frowns at this and she thinks she's saying something wrong
"Why do you think you have to apologize to me Katniss?.. Because you don't."
She knows this by now, they have been living together for like ten months already. Instead of making the situation even more awkward she just gives him a small smile which he returns before she gets up and ready for the day. Peeta makes the bed as she showers and puts on a light, comfortable dress in his favorite color.. Orange, not like bright neon orange but a sunset orange. When she comes out he's smiling,
"What are you smiling about?" He takes her hand and spins her around.
"You're beautiful Katniss" he spins her again, this time her lips are met with his when she faces him.
"It's not too fancy?"
"Nope. Perfect for what I have planned for today."
Peeta kisses her one last time before getting dressed. He hasn't told her what he has planned but he hopes she'll like it, when he comes back she's sitting at the table waiting for him.
"Katniss Mellark" she's surprised he's putting his last name after her first.. Not totally surprised because that's what you do when you're married but still she was surprised that she was special enough to have his last name.
She decided not to question it though, she kind of liked it actually.. Katniss Mellark. Yeah, that sounded like something she could get used to.
"So what do you want to do today?" Peeta asked her as he finished brushing his teeth. She thought about it for a moment,
"Would it be so bad if we just hung out at home today?. I mean like have a lazy day today" she's hoping Peeta won't mind.
"Of course, I just need to run to the store you can stay here in the apartment if you want." It seems like he hopes she'll decide to stay so she does. When he leaves for the store she decides to look through his book of drawings, there are some of flowers and her, sketches of wedding cakes too. Maybe these were sketches of a cake he wanted for his toasting...their toasting. Katniss decides to put the book away and she's glad she does because Peeta is home, she hugs him as he puts the bag on the counter.
"Missed me?" He teases and she just smiles. He takes some stuff out of the bag he's brought back with him, there's cookie dough and a little box.
"Hey.. Mr Baker is buying cookie dough now?" Katniss teases Peeta this time, she doesn't worry if he'll be mad or upset at her because he's told her he can't get mad at her... but the smile on his face gives her more relief.
"So when I was coming home from the store I saw this little shop and decided to stop in." He explains as he pulls out the little black box..
"I didn't plan on buying anything.. it's just this was so beautiful and you don't have anything to wear." It takes Katniss a moment to realize that he's talking about a ring.. she knows this is very important for married couples but why would Peeta do this now? they were already married
"I hope you like it, Katniss." He opened the little box and inside there was something that brought her to tears, it was a ring with a pearl in the middle and on the band it said "Always."
"I love it Peeta!" she seriously couldn't wait as he put it on her ring finger, it was a new symbol of their love, and it would forever remain on her hand as a reminder that they belonged together.. after Peeta slipped hers on he slipped a simple band that matched hers, minus the pearl but it had the same "Always."
Peeta then explained the pre-made cookie dough was not for him, it was for Fin and Annie.. that's all he would tell her but she didn't push him to say any more.
As it got later Peeta set up a makeshift theater in the living room for the night, he dropped pillows everywhere and then put a fluffy blanket on top to serve as a nest type of mattress which was actually really comfortable.. They watched a scary movie and Katniss couldn't help but notice herself playing with her ring,
"Stay with me?" She thought Peeta was sound asleep when she whispered it to herself, but after a few moments she felt an arm pull her closer and hug her
"Always."
