Ring…ring…ring…"Hello?"

"Dave…there's been an accident, it's Maddy."

The trauma doctor, Dr Greenstreet walks into the operating room, clean hands in the air. The nurse meets him immediately and gloves him up. He looks at the young, bloodied and lifeless girl in front of him. She is close to the same age as his own daughter. His heart goes out to her family then quickly studies himself emotionally. What she needs now is absolute focus on his part.

"Alright, let's see what we have to work with…scalpel."

He opened her up and found a ruptured spleen and a few torn intestines along with at least 2000 cc of blood in her abdomen. Within a few minutes Maddy's vitals' are failing. The anesthesiologist, Dr Musket, orders Hespan and four units of O positive blood as he opens up the I.V. fluids wide. Dr Greenstreet looks up.

"Get the internal paddles ready." He instructed as he goes back to removing the reputed spleen and attempting to stop the heavy flow of bleeding.

Within a minute Dr Musket starts to squeeze the ventilation bag as Maddy's heart beat drops to 20 then 10 and then…a solid beeping sound is heard.

"Paddles!" Dr Greenstreet calls out.

The nurse quickly hands them to the resident doctor and he immediately goes to work.

"Charge to ten." He positions the paddles, "clear!"

A zapping sound is heard but the beeping is still a solid beep.

"Charge to 15!"

As the internal paddles are being used, Dr Musket is giving Epinephrine to help kick start the heart.

"Clear!"

ZAP

Again, nothing but a solid beeping sound, the doctor tries again.

"Clear!"

ZAP

Beep…beep…beep is now heard and the room exhales.

A detached spleen was only one of Maddy's many injuries. She had a fractured pelvis, several tears within her intestines, and lacerations on her scalp along with swelling of the brain, and several broken bones throughout her right leg, hip and left wrist.

Eight hours later Maddy was finally stable. She was placed into an induced coma for the best chance of recovery due to her massive head trauma. Dr Greenstreet tossed his bloodied gloves into the nearby hazardous waste disposal as he walked out to inform her family that at this point, it was a mere waiting game.
