I Tackle The Daughter of Zeus - chapter 12
We stopped on the outskirts of a little ski town nestled in the mountains. We passed a snow covered sign that read, WE_OME _O CLO_ROFT, _EW MEX_O. I wiped off the snow with my arm, and shaking it off read, WELCOME TO CLOUDCROFT, NEW MEXICO. Everything was covered with snow.
As we were walking to the Main Street I told Grover and the girls what Apollo had told me. They looked uneasy.
"We have to get there first." Thalia warned I nodded and heard wing beats; I spun around and searched the sky, seeing a flash of black in the clouds. I squinted before turning back to the group.
"Nothing. It feels like we are being watched." I murmured to Thalia she nodded and glanced back. We had four days, until Friday to get to Bianca.
"Oh, great," Annabeth moaned, "No way out of here."
"Oh, look!" Grover looked delighted, "A coffee shop!"
"Yes," Zoë sighed, "Coffee is good."
"Don't forget wax paper." Grover grinned.
"You two go get us some food. Thalia and I will check the grocery store, Seth you can keep watch." Annabeth ordered. I nodded and wandering over to highest building on the started scaling the wall, there were plenty of handholds. They still didn't trust me. It took fifteen minutes before Annabeth and Thalia came out of the shop, Annabeth glanced up to where I was perched on the wall and five minutes later Grover and Zoë out of the Coffee shop laden down with pastries and drinks. I climbed down and met them halfway, relieving Zoë of my coffee.
"The tracking spell. We need to know where to go next." Zoë suggested, "Do you have any acorns left?"
"I think so. I just need to finish my wrapper." Grover muttered. A warm breeze flittered past; it smelt like fresh air and flowers. I faintly made out a voice, trying to say a warning. Grover dropped his coffee cup as there were chirps. The birds decorated onto the cup peeled themselves off and flew away, tiny wings flappy rapidly.
"Hey! That was perfectly good cof-" I stopped as Grover collapsed in the snow. His coffee fell next to him and was melting the surrounding snow. His eyes were fluttering. The two of us were crowding round him trying to wake him up.
"Grover!" I looked up to see Thalia running towards us, her spear was out and crackling. "Get away from him, you traitor!" She yelled as rod of lightning struck me. I was sent flying back and landed on my back in the snow.
"What are you talking about?" I shouted as I stood up, I felt like I was on a sugar rush from the electricity.
"You let the warriors through to us." Thalia cried, "They ambushed us in a shop."
"Wait. Where is Annabeth?" My blood ran cold.
"Here." I felt something cold against my neck and froze. "Why didn't you warn us?"
"I did not know they were here. I swear it on the Styx." I stumbled forward as Annabeth released me I quickly ran to Grover and slung him over my shoulder, using one arm to keep him there. "We have to get out of here."
We were ambushed at the edge of the town. Two skeleton warriors stepped out from the treeline; they were wearing blue police uniforms. I could clearly see their grey skin and yellow eyes as they surveyed us. Aegis spiralled to life beside me as Thalia set up a stance in which she could easily attack or defend. Annabeth was still invisible, Zoë took out her bow, Grover was swooning and I dumped him on the floor to get my hands free. My swords formed in my hands. The bushes behind us rustled and two more warriors approached behind us. I quickly understood that they were calling reinforcements as one raised a cell phone to its mouth.
"It's coming." Grover groaned from his place on the ground I nudged him with my foot trying to shut him up, "Gift from the Wild. It's coming."
"There are four of them, four of us, one on one." Thalia said.
"Agreed," Zoë nodded. A warm wind blew through the canyon again, I lifted my head up and breathed deeply, remembering the reason I was on this quest for.
"For Bianca!" I yelled as I charged. I slowed down the bullet shot at me and redirected it into a tree using the wind currents. The skeleton warrior drew baton. I stabbed him through the chest, ripped upwards. Wrenched my sword out and spun round, cutting him in half. I concentrated on the bones lying in a heap and they burst into flames. My eyes were wide open, scanning everything. My senses were on overdrive. I sensed two bullets ripping apart the air behind me and dived to the ground. Thalia, Zoë and Annabeth were fighting their own skeletons. I couldn't see Annabeth but one skeleton kept randomly being destroyed and was firing everywhere. Grover was standing in the middle of all the chaos with his hands out to the trees, completely out of it. The trees were shuddering and toppling over. I moved backwards towards the girls. Concentrating on my swords, they lit on fire. I slashed them through the air; the fire extended like a whip and wrapped around one of the skeletons. I raised the temperature and ignored the others warriors, until I was shot in the side of my chest. As I fell I lost my concentration and the fire dispersed. A bolt of lightning stuck the skeleton that was now aiming at my head.
"Thanks Thalia." I panted as I rose to my feet. She nodded at me. We retreated, Annabeth striking out at different skeletons, they couldn't tell where she was going to attack next.
"Goat Boy!" Thalia yelled Grover was standing still and swaying.
"A gift," He murmured. A ten metres tall wild boar burst out of the underbrush. It charged straight towards the skeletons and head-butted them into the side of the mountain.
It then turned to us.
I and Thalia raised our weapons, but Grover scrambled over yelling, "Don't kill it."
"If that's what I think it is, I don't think we can kill it."
"Oh, great. Any more invincible monsters you want to tell us about, Huntress?" I muttered.
"It's a gift. A blessing, from the Wild."
I think the boar disagreed. We dived to the ground as its tusks swung towards us, just missing my head. "Scatter!" Annabeth yelled, her Yankees cap had come off when she had dived. The boar was confused for a moment. "It's going to kill us!"
"It's wild." Grover looked confused. "What else would it do?"
"Grover… do you know the thin line between a blessing and a curse?" I questioned. The boar turned to me as if insulted.
"Keep moving!" Zoë yelled. I was standing beside Thalia as she raised Aegis. The boar squealed in rage and charged us.
We ran uphill, dodging in and out of the trees. I ran towards a stretch of train track, half-buried in the snow. Thalia ran after me. I could see a snow covered tunnel and an old bridge across a gorge. We ran through the tunnel and came out the other side.
"No!" Thalia screamed. She was deathly pale. Below us the mountain dropped away to a snow-filled gorge twenty metres below. I concentrated on the snow below us and formed it into a solid platform.
"The boar is behind us! Come on." I shouted. She shook her head and started backing away. I tackled the daughter of Zeus over the edge, turning in mid-air so I was below her, I held her in my arms as we landed on the platform I had made and started sliding downhill. I looked up, Thalia was above me with her eyes shut, and her face was inches from mine. She opened her eyes as we slid downhill, they were a startling electric blue, and I could almost see lightning flickering back and forth. We slid to a stop at the bottom; Thalia looked at me, a ghost of a blush on her face. She leaned down towards me; I could feel her breath on my face.
The boar landed beside is with an indignant squeal. I released Thalia in surprise and she shot to her feet, a dark blush on her cheeks. She looked away from me as we waited for the others to come. I thought back to how she was reluctant to jump and realised she was afraid of heights.
A few minutes later Grover, Zoë and Annabeth were between us watching the boar struggle.
"Well, next time you call a raging boar," I grinned, "please warn me first."
"It's our ride west. This boar can travel very fast." Grover took out his reed pipes and an apple, playing a tune quickly the apple floated in front of the boar.
"Great, automatic steering." Thalia muttered as she followed Grover who was on the thing. Zoë, Annabeth and I got on behind them.
"I never thought anyone would ever sense Pan again." I murmured.
