Two At a Time Please
If there was one word that could sum up the Labyrinth, it would be dark.
Wind whistled along the corridors, and shadows twisted on the wall. I took my bow off my back and pulled back on the string, forming an arrow. With a little concentration, the tip burst into flames that illuminated everything around us; from Nico – who was a lot paler than usual – to the cobwebs on the ceiling.
"How are we going to find Minos?" Nico asked as we started walking.
"Were you not listening to anything Quintus told us? Ariadne's string or clear sight will guide us."
"So how will we find Ariadne's string?"
"What makes you think we are trying to?" I frowned as I followed a faint trail on the floor, it looked like mist.
"The Titans are looking for it and we can't just kidnap a mortal with clear sight."
"We do not have to. I am clear sighted!"
"We need to stop the Titans from finding the string!"
"No, we don't Nico!" I whirled around to face him. "The gods have made it clear that Hades is not welcome on Olympus. Why should we help them fight if they have done nothing for us in return? Hades is staying out of this war and so am I." I turned away and continued through the Labyrinth, felling slightly guilty. Nico carefully followed me as the fire arrow illuminated the corridor. Nico gave me enough time to calm down before speaking again.
"Can immortals die?"
"Why do you ask?"
"If the gods lose this war will they die?"
I thought for a moment before speaking. "It depends. If they have a throne, the throne has to be destroyed and mortals have to stop worshipping them." I paused slightly to check the trail. "Otherwise for the gods who don't have a throne, they have to stop being worshipped by mortals. Titans have to go through immense pain and the Primordials cannot face, except one way. Every immortal will fade if their domain is destroyed enough to be unrecognisable. A lot of immortals are safe from the last one, The Titan King is one, and Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon are others. Their domains are not limited, or restricted."
"Why did you list Kronos?" Nico asked. A cold breeze drifted through the Labyrinth and the fire on my arrow spluttered out, I cursed and turned, firing my arrow into the darkness behind Nico. There was a loud screech as something dissipated into golden dust.
"Hasn't anyone ever told you that names are powerful?" I asked drawing back on my bow string.
"No, why?"
"Run, Nico!" I yelled, hearing scuttling and shouts coming our way. "I'll hold them off!"
"Where?" Nico looked really pale now.
"Straight ahead, watch the ceiling for light."
"What?"
"No time, go! I'll hold them off as long as I can, then find you." I ordered. Nico nodded and ran off, leaving me there to face our pursuers. I followed Nico down the corridors until we came to a crossroads, Nico ran on and I turned to the right and pressed myself against the wall so I could see out of my left eye, summoning my swords on my back. I unsheathed my katana Veltioste and held it in my left hand, in my right hand I readied a throwing knife and waited for whoever was following us to run past. There were 3 demigods at the front of the group, various monsters – mostly Dracaena – in the middle and another 3 demigods at the back. I threw a knife at the last demigod who cried out a warning as he toppled over, the knife stuck in his leg. The rest of our pursuers turned and looked at me. I took the opportunity and threw another knife, this time at a Dracaena that had a bow. The demigods charged at me in the confined corridor whilst the rest of the Dracaenae fired arrows at me. Only two of the half-bloods could attack at a time as the corridor wasn't big enough for any more to swing weapons. I diverted the first hail of arrows using the wind as the demigods approached, though one arrow managed to bury itself in my leg, the rest passed harmlessly by. Then the half-bloods were close enough to attack.
"Only two at a time, please," I said as I blocked the first cut and punched the demigod's head. I probably put too much force into it as his helmet and head cracked and caved in, I winced as he flew backwards and could see his eyes vibrate. Shaking my right hand out as my knuckles were throbbing I slashed at the other half-blood. He quickly parried it away with his spear's point and swung the spear round to hit my side with the force of a hammer. I doubled over, pretending to clutch my side but grabbed the knife from my hood and flicked my hand towards him. The knife buried itself in his forehead. Nico was out of sight and the half-bloods had forgotten about him for the moment. I shifted my head slightly to the left as an arrow whistled by my head, ripping my hood. A hellhound lunged at me and knocked me over. Red eyes stared at me and saliva dripped onto my face as the hellhound growled. I lit my body on fire and the hellhound leapt back in pain. I shot a fire ball at it, burning it into a crisp. 5 enemies down, 8 to go, I thought, raising the flat of my blade to parry away a mace flying at my face. I twisted to dodge a sword-thrust from Half-Blood no. 5 and reached for my traditional Greek, leaf-shaped sword Katastrofí so I would be able to fight both of them at once. Half-Blood no. 4 swung his mace at me again and I ducked, hooking my foot around his leg, making him fall over backwards. Half-Blood no. 5 attacked me relentlessly and I was gradually forced back the way I came. The whole time a hail of arrows descended on me, several bouncing off the walls and some ripping holes in my clothing, a few lodged in my legs and one in my shoulder. Half-Blood no. 4 re-joined the fight and tried to pummel me with his mace. I sensed a monster shadow-travelling behind me and knocked away Half-Blood no. 5's sword, reversing the grip on Katastrofí I stabbed the monster as I felt it pounce at me.
Half-Blood no. 6 suddenly reached through the gap between the other demigods and thrust his spear at me, successfully drawing blood. The spear point was quickly withdrawn from my stomach. I felt much more pain than I should have and dropped my weapons. The Half-Bloods stopped attacking and watched, the hail of arrows slowed then also stopped. I quickly realised why it hurt more than it should when I tore the leather armour off. The spear point, whether by skill or luck had pierced my stomach where I had been stabbed by Atlas, the injury was still not completely healed despite Apollo's effort at the Olympian party last year. I fell over backwards, feeling a sharp pain at the base of my skull and everything went black.
I am trying to not make Seth over-powered, I hate it when people do that. What is the point in having a problem or enemy if someone can kill them with a snap of a finger? It's quite good too, it fits the plot I have in my head.
