Accusations - chapter 26
Percy looked around trying to find someone that could help him. Kampe was on him and Annabeth with hundreds of hissing snakes. Kampe raised her swords and Percy readied himself to die. Something black slammed into Kampe, sending her flying. A hellhound stood above the two demigods, snarling at Kampe.
"Good girl!" Daedalus was fighting his way out of the Labyrinth beside Seth. They worked together like they had been fighting as a team for their entire life. Seth would make the earth rumble and Daedalus stabbed every monster that tried to get near him. Beside them was a familiar giant, one hundred arms each carrying a huge rock each.
"Briares!" Tyson cried in amazement.
"Hail, little brother. Stand firm!" The giant replied in a bellow.
As Mrs. O'Leary leapt out of the way Briares launched a volley of his boulders at Kampe. They smashed into her at full force and seemed to enlarge as they flew through the air. A mountain almost as big a Zeus' Fist marked where Kampe had been, with two scimitars dripping acid. A cheer went up from the demigods.
"Kill them all!" A dracaenae shouted. "Slay them or Kronos will flay you alive!" Immediately all the monsters surged forward, a giant caught Chiron in the leg and he went flying into a tree. Six other giants moved forward towards him.
"Chiron!" Percy cried almost every demigod immediately turned to look but none of them were close enough to stop them. Chiron tried to get up so he could defend himself but fell back down. Percy looked to see who was closest and saw Seth riding a hellhound he had somehow tamed. "Seth, help Chiron!"
Seth immediately whispered in the hellhound's ear and a second later reappeared standing with his legs crouched on the hellhounds back in the giant's shadow. He jumped for the giant's club and swung around, stabbing him in the face with his swords. The giant disintegrated beneath him as he leapt for the next one and impaled his neck. Seth jumped from giant to giant quickly until he jumped for the last one. The giant moved faster than he expected and managed to grab him mid-jump. He tried to pummel the giant's hand with his sword hilts then lit himself on fire. The Laistrygonian released him them swung his club, it caught Seth in the chest and he flew into the branches of a tree, unconscious. The Apollo cabin archers were ready and now that Seth wasn't in the line on fire the giant resembled a porcupine. Whilst the demigods were distracted the enemy monsters and Half-Bloods pushed forward and slaughtered them left and right. The demigods were starting to panic.
Then it happened. Grover opened his mouth and a sound that was like hundreds of trumpets came out. Pure fear came from Grover's mouth. All of Kronos' attack force dropped their weapons as one and ran for the Labyrinth. The doors shut and the clearing was quiet. Bodies littered the ground and the wounded cried out in pain. Percy and Annabeth ran to Chiron.
"Are you alright?"
He was lying on his side, trying in vain to get up. "How embarrassing," he muttered. "I think I will be fine. Fortunately, we do not shoot centaurs with broken legs."
"You need help," Annabeth said. "I'll get a medic from Apollo's cabin."
"No," Chiron insisted. "There are more serious injuries to attend to. Go! I am fine. But, Grover... Later we must talk about how you did that."
"That was amazing," Percy agreed.
Grover blushed and looked down at his hooves. "I don't know where it came from."
Juniper hugged him fiercely. "I do!"
Before she could say more, Tyson called, "Percy, come quick! It is Nico!"
Nico lay on his side, his hands clenched and smoke curling off him. The grass in his area had turned yellow and died. Percy rolled him over and test for a heartbeat – it was faint. "I need Nectar!" A camper limped over and gave Percy a canteen who quickly poured some in his Nico's mouth. The son of Hades coughed but his eyes opened.
"What happened, Nico?" Percy asked.
"I've never tried to summon so many before." Nico focused on someone behind Percy. "Daedalus, you came!"
"Seth and I met Briares on the way," Daedalus nodded, "and your brother managed to convince me that I should help you. I made a lot of bad decisions and came to correct them." He was bleeding golden oil but he looked a lot better than the rest of the campers. Briares stood behind him, bashfully signing everything the campers gave to him.
"Briares! I knew you would come. " Tyson exclaimed.
"I did not know." Briares admitted. "Though I am glad you reminded me of what I could do."
"Where is Seth?" Nico asked he looked much better and was standing now.
Everyone looked at each other as Percy exclaimed, "Gods! How could we have forgotten him?" He rushed to the tree where Seth was flung by the giant. Half-way up it he was tangled in the branches, his clothes scratched apart and nearly golden blood staining the leaves. He tried to climb the tree but Annabeth pulled him back.
"If you fall you'll get hurt, we don't need any more people to heal."
"How are we going to get him down, then?" Percy asked looking around the campers who had followed him.
"I know!" Annabeth cried. "The hellhound he was riding on. Where is it?" The hellhound was sitting beside Mrs. O'Leary, trying to clean her of the monster dust but she kept snapping at him. The hellhound looked at Annabeth curiously and wandered over.
"Could you get Seth down from the tree?" Annabeth asked. The hellhound bounded over to the tree and stood on its back legs to reach Seth, leaning its forepaws against the bark of the tree. He reached up and gently eased Seth from the tree; he hung limply from the hound's mouth. The hound released him and everyone rushed over to him, Nico shouldered his way to the front. Percy poured nectar down Seth's throat and over his injuries watching as his wounds quickly healed. Seth slowly woke up and winced as he tried to sit up. Percy and Nico helped him to his feet and escorted him to a stone where he could sit.
"What about the Titan army?" Percy asked. "They are still down there. And will be back later, this time with Kronos leading them.
Daedalus sheathed his sword. "You are right. As long as the Labyrinth is here, your enemies can use it. This is why the Labyrinth cannot continue."
Annabeth stared at him in shock. "But you said the Labyrinth is tied to your life force! As long as you're alive-"
"Yes, my young sister," Daedalus agreed. "When I die, the Labyrinth will die as well. And so I have a present for you." He slung a leather satchel off his back, unzipped it, and produced a silver laptop - one of the ones they had seen in the workshop. On the lid was the blue symbol of Daedalus.
"All my work is here," he said. "It's all I managed to save from the fire. Notes on projects I never started. Some of my favourite designs that I couldn't develop over the last few millennia. I did not dare reveal my work to the mortal world. Who knows what they would do with it? But perhaps you will find it interesting."
He handed the computer to Annabeth, who stared at it like it was a block of gold. "You're giving me this? But this is priceless! This is-"
"Small compensation for the way I have acted," Daedalus said. "You were right, Annabeth, about children of Athena. We should be wise, and I was not. Someday you will be a greater architect than I ever was. Take my ideas and improve them. It is the least I can do before I pass on."
"Wait," Percy said. "Pass on? But you can't just kill yourself. That's wrong."
He shook his head. "Not as wrong as hiding from my crimes for two thousand years. Genius does not excuse evil, Percy. My time has come. I must face my punishment."
"You won't get a fair trial," Annabeth said. "The spirit of Minos sits in judgment-"
"I will take what comes, when it comes," he said. "And trust in the justice of the Underworld, as it is. That is all we can do, isn't it?"
He looked straight at Nico, and Nico's face darkened.
"Yes," he said. "Seth and I will help you with Minos. And I will release your spirit."
"I have two things to say. Percy, will you take care of Mrs. O'Leary for me? She has no desire to return to the Underworld and I can't leave her alone."
"Yes, I will. What was the other thing?"
"You have a spy." Daedalus stated.
"What?" Percy said.
"One of my campers is a spy?" Chiron asked.
"Yes. You have a spy and I think I know who it is."
"Who is it, then?" Chiron asked calmly.
Daedalus looked at Seth who was watching them with slight fear that they would find out – he had gotten to know the demigods and didn't want them to treat him any differently. The other campers quickly caught on and looked accusingly at him. Seth was lying on the stone. "I believe it is Seth." Daedalus said.
"Why do you think that?" Chiron asked curiously. "If he was helping Luke he would have let me be killed, not saved me."
"Think about it." Daedalus said. "Percy, Annabeth have you ever thought that Seth was hiding something?"
Percy hesitated. "In Antaeus' arena, all the monsters bowed to him. He was acting weird around you, too."
Daedalus nodded. "I thought he was acting weird. He seemed familiar to me and now that his hood is off I recognise him. He was at Luke's side when they came to ask me for the string."
All of campers turned to look at Seth who just seemed to realise that his hood was down. "As Chiron said, if I was working for Luke I would have let him die. I had countless opportunities to kill Percy, Annabeth, and Daedalus. I could have led Daedalus and Briares to the wrong place in the maze so that you all would have died, and I would probably be running to the Labyrinth at the moment." Seth's mind raced as he tried to think up ideas on the spot.
'Swear it.' Seth hadn't heard that voice in months so he jumped slightly. Kronos was nervous. He obviously wanted Seth to gain the demigods trust. "I swear on the River Styx that I am not working for Luke, or Kronos." The demigods waited tense for thunder to rumble above signalling the oath and relaxed once it did.
"Next time you go accusing one of my campers please have actual evidence." Chiron said.
Daedalus looked surprised and cleared his throat. "Well, Nico." Nico nodded and drew his sword.
"Your time is long since come, rest in peace."
Daedalus smiled in relief as his skin turned transparent so that all the wires and gears were visible. All that was left was a statue which turned into golden dust and melted into the ground. The earth rumbled as the Labyrinth collapsed at the death of Daedalus and Seth inwardly relaxed. He was so close to being found out.
