Chapter 5: Blood
Eric woke up with a start as a strange cry filled the air. Looking around in panic he reached for the rope that held his sleeping bag to the branch. Then movement caught his eye and Eric looked over at the tree across from his. On the branches stood a strange creature covered in feathers, but defiantly not a bird. Eric watched it for a second longer before pulling the portable cooler from his bag. Looking into the syringes that where labeled "Stegosaurus" "Velecaraptor" "Triceratops" and "Utahraptor".
"All this trouble for some silly embryos?" Eric turned one capsule in his hand than looked back up at the bird. It had flown away, apparently something had scared it. Thats when Eric felt the tremors, they rippled through the earn and up the tree, making the world have a mini earthquake. Eric untied himself quickly then shoved the embryos back into the cooler. Proceeding to shove everything back in his bag and swinging it over his shoulder. The lack of a weapon all to clear in his mind.
He saw the Rex's head glide underneath him and Eric's muscles tensed. 'Is it the same one?' Eric thought he saw blood drip from it's eye. But it could have been his imagination. The rex paused and lifted it's head towards him, sniffing the air defiantly. But then dropped it's head back down and continued walking. Eric waited for the tremors to be distant before he allowed himself to breath.
"Close call" He whispered under his breath. Then he shimmed down the tree and began walking under the sparkling night sky.
Ash's POV
When ash had waken up the human was gone, only leaving a scent trail and foot prints to follow. 'Geez, humans are always in a rush' She grumbled in her mind then stood up and began trekking home. She didn't care for the human, besides the pack would starve without her. While her mind was wandering she walked aimlessly in the general direction of home, Time seemingly infinite and her mind kept retracing what the human had done. 'No! i don't care about the human!' She argued with her emotions, forcing them into a mental box and locking the box with a very big key. Ash emerged into the nesting site moments later and all three of her students rushed to great her.
"Where have you been ash!" Mare squeaked and ran around ash's feet
"Yea! we where all worried." Tineye piped in, keeping pace with ash.
"I was just…." Ash found herself unable to speak about what exactly she was doing. To be honest she didn't even know what she was doing. "I needed time to think" She replayed, Her students didn't seem to buy it but did't pester her either
"We caught some baby gallimimus's while you where gone!" Pip wagged his tail in front of Ash, not really understanding why she was being quite.
"Did you now! Thats great." Ash put on her best smile, which seemed to be good enough for pip and he rushed off shouting "Ash is home! Ash is home!"
"The nesting area seems empty?" Ash said, looking around to see some elders and a few hunters standing in small groups "Where is everyone?" Ash looked down at mare, who was looking away from her gaze
"The deinonychus attacked us" Tineye replayed, he poked the ground with his claws, making X marks in the ground.
"What!" Ash left her two apprentices behind and ran for the leaders den, poking her rushing in with some strong objections from delta
"Tell me what happend, now!" Ash glared hard at delta, sizing him up in her mind. Delta sat there, looking campy back at her with his deep blue eyes
"They attacked when all of our hunting party's and warriors where out, It was all i could do to keep the elders safe." He looked down sadly and ash's heart fell. "The reason they attacked is unknown to me, however one of the elders claim it was for revenge
"Revenge?" Ash repeated, looking around confused "Why would they attack us for revenge?"
"Apparently, back when our packs where new and the humans had left the island, the Utahraptor leader, Scars didn't abide by the rules of territory. He'd always send hunting party's off into the deinonychus's grounds" Delta focused his eyes on ash "One day the deinonychus spotted one of these party's and was outraged, the alpha of there pack came to talk to scars, but our old alpha wouldn't even see him. So a war broke out, and many of the raptors on both sides died. However in the end the Utahraptor warriors one day ambushed a warrior group that was heading to our territory, killing the alpha in the process. The deinonychus quickly surrendered after that and agreed to give up a portion of there grounds. Ever since then our kinds have hated each other."
Delta looked down at the ground as ash stared in shock "Or so the tale goes, no one can confirm or deny it." Delta slowly stood up and began walking towards the entrance of his den
"I want to fight." Ash mumbled lowly as the Alpha passed by her. "I want to fight for my pack"
Delta looked back at her his eyes glinting with humor "Oh, you'll do more than fight. From this day forward i declare you as my heir to the Alpha position. If i die in this war you'll lead the pack" Then he left, Without a second glance. Ash stood there stunned, eyes wide and mouth slightly opened.
"But…i was the one to start this war" She whispered under her breath than followed Delta out of the den
