Revelations - chapter 30

Seth was sitting in central park when he received the Iris Message. Percy had told Annabeth to gather every demigod at the Empire State Building. When Seth got the message all of the demigods were on Olympus so Seth waited in the lobby for them to come down, not really wanting to visit the gods. The doorman didn't seem too pleased with a half-blood hanging around the lobby but ignored him.

Seth waited for hours until Percy and Annabeth came down from Olympus along with the other demigods. They came down and told him and Argus – who had been waiting in one of the Camp's white vans – what they had learned on Olympus, that the gods were not going to be coming to the rescue. Then Percy told Argus to get back to Camp, in response Argus got out a shield that showed anything as long as any natural light was touching it.

"Is that a video shield?" Percy asked.

"One of Daedalus' inventions, I had Beckendorf make it." Annabeth concentrated and the image moved down East Sixtieth past Bloomingdale's, then turning on Third Avenue.

"Back up. Zoom in there." Connor pointed.

"Are there invaders?" Annabeth asked nervously.

"No, but look! Dude," Conner grinned at Travis. "It's Dylan's Candy Bar and it's open! Everyone is asleep, you thinking what I am?"

Seth laughed shortly as Katie exclaimed, "Connor! You cannot loot any place in the middle of a war!"

"Sorry," He muttered not sounding very sorry at all. Annabeth waved her hand in front of the shield and FDR Drive showed up on the polished surface.

"This way we will be able to see what is going on in the city. Thank you, Argus. Hopefully we will see you back at Camp… someday." Annabeth said.

"You made that sound really depressing." Seth commented as Argus climbed into the van and drove away with the two harpy drivers.

Percy whistled to Mrs. O'Leary and talked to her for a few seconds then she barked and raced off south, but not before giving Percy a sloppy wet lick.

"I don't get it," Pollux the son of Dionysus stated. "Why did they fall asleep but not us?"

"This is a massive spell. The bigger the spell, the easier it is to resist. Sleeping demigods is much harder than mortals." Silena explained.

"When did you learn so much about magic?" Percy asked her.

"I don't spend all my time in my wardrobe."

"Percy. You'd better see this." Annabeth called.

Whatever Percy saw in the shield it wasn't good. "Scan the island's perimeter, quick."

Seth shifted closer so he could see as Annabeth changed the view in the shield. South of the harbour was a Staten Island Ferry approaching near Ellis Island. Monsters crowded the deck and telkhines were swimming in front of the ferry. At the Jersey shore hundreds of monsters were marching towards the Lincoln Tunnel. Some dragons, giants and a World War 2 tank pushed cars out of the way to get past.

"What's happening to the mortals outside Manhattan?" Percy asked. "Is the whole state asleep?"

"I don't think so," Annabeth frowned. "But it's strange. As far as I can tell, Manhattan is totally asleep. There is a fifty mile radius around the island where time is going really, really slow. The closer to Manhattan, the slower it is."

"Kronos is slowing time." Percy said.

"Well, he is the Titan of Time." Seth stated.

"Hecate could be helping. Look, the cars are veering away from Manhattan exits." Katie Gardner said.

"I don't know," Annabeth sighed. "But somehow they've surrounded Manhattan in layers of magic. Any mortals coming towards Manhattan will slow down so much they won't know what's happening."

"Like flies in amber," Jake Mason the new leader of the Hephaestus cabin said.

"We shouldn't expect any help coming in. It is just us here."

"All right. We're going to hold Manhattan. We have to."

"He's right," Annabeth said. "The gods of the wind should keep Kronos' forces away from Olympus by air, so his only option is a ground assault. We have to cut off all entrances to the island."

"They have boats." Michael Yew pointed out.

"I'll take care of the boats." Percy said.

"How?" Michael frowned.

"Just leave it to me. We need to guard all of the bridges and tunnels. Midtown or downtown would be the direct way to the Empire State Building so let's assume they will come that way. Michael, take Apollo's cabin to the Williamsburg Bridge-"

"I'll go with them." Seth volunteered.

"And take Seth with you." Percy continued. "Katie, take Demeter's cabin to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Connor, take half of Hermes cabin to the Manhattan Bridge. Travis, take the other half to the Brooklyn Bridge. Oh, and no stopping for looting or pillaging!

"Awwww!" The Hermes cabin complained.

"Silena, take the Aphrodite cabin to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel."

"Oh my gods-"

"Shut up!" Seth yelled over the Aphrodite cabin's mutters. "Let Percy speak. There are monsters approaching as we speak, let him finish."

"Thank you, Seth. Jake, take the Hephaestus cabin to The Holland Tunnel."

"Gladly, we've got a score to settle with these monsters, for Beckendorf!" Jake yelled.

"The Fifty-ninth Street Bridge. Clarisse-"

"We'll take that." Annabeth stepped in. "Malcolm, take Athena cabin and activate plan twenty-three along the way, like I showed you."

"You got it."

"I'll go with Percy. Then we'll join you – or we'll go wherever we're needed."

"No detours you two." Someone in the back of the group snickered.

"All right, keep in touch with cell phones." Percy said.

"But we don't have cell phones." Silena pointed out.

"You do now." Percy said as he threw one to her that he picked up from a snoring lady. "Everyone knows Annabeth's number, right? If you need us, pick up a phone and call us. Drop it immediately after then use another if you have to."

"Uh, if we find a really nice phone-" Travis started.

"No, you can't keep it." Percy said.

"Aw, man." He whined.

"Hold it, Percy." Jake said. "You forgot the Lincoln Tunnel."

"How about you leave that to us?" A voice called from across the street. Seth eyes widened and he turned to the voice.

"Thalia," Annabeth cried, "Bianca!"

"The Hunters of Artemis, reporting to duty." The co-lieutenants said in unison. Thalia and Bianca gave hugs and greetings to every one whilst the rest of the Hunters didn't like being around campers.

"Where have you been the last year?" Percy asked. "You've got, like twice as many Hunters now!"

"It's a long story, Jackson. Though I bet our adventures were more dangerous than yours."

"Complete lie." Percy grinned.

"We'll see. After all this is over, you, Annabeth, Bianca, Seth and me. Me cheeseburgers and fries at that hotel on West Fifty-sixth."

"Le Parker Meridien. You're on. And, Thalia, thanks."

"Those monsters won't know what hit them. Hunters, move out!" Thalia said and the Hunters took off down the avenue followed by their wolves and falcons.

"Thank the gods." Annabeth said. "But if we don't blockade the rivers from those boats, guarding the bridges and tunnels will be pointless."

"You're right." Percy said and looked around at all the campers. "You're the greatest heroes of this millennium. It doesn't matter how many monsters come at us. Fight bravely, and we will win. For Olympus!" Percy raised Riptide and the campers echoed his battle cry.

The Williamsburg Bridge was quickly turned into a war ground. Apollo kids set up archer towers to gain height and quickly climbed up them whilst some still stayed at ground level and hid behind cars. Seth stayed on ground level with them and sharpened his swords as they waited for the enemy to approach. Messages were shouted from tower to tower down the bridge. Then an alarm was relayed down the line of makeshift towers and a line of monsters appeared on the other end of the bridge. Seth rose to his feet and waited alone in the middle of the street. He quickly identified the monster leading the army as the Minotaur. He sheathed his two swords and grabbed his bow off his back. Three arrows were knocked at once and fired in the space of two seconds, after Seth fired his arrows the Apollo cabin fired at least two each at once and about a dozen monsters dissolved. The Minotaur bellowed a challenge and Seth replied with his own one. The monster army charged and so did Seth as the Apollo archers provided support and prepared to cover his flanks. As Seth ran he whistled for Maverick and the hellhound soon appeared out of a shadow and joined him in his charge.

The first monster Seth killed was an enemy hellhound that leapt at him and received a sword in the side of the head for its troubles. The Minotaur stampeded right by Seth, but made no move to attack him and Seth let him go past towards the archers. The half-man, half-bull probably didn't want to even try to harm Seth.

About an hour into the battle Seth was still fighting but several Half-Bloods lay dead on the floor - he tried to avoid looking at them as they were his friends. Over half of the archer towers they had set up were destroyed and the Apollo cabin was steadily retreating as the monster army came ever closer. Several times Seth had been disarmed in the fighting and resorted to finishing off his opponent using his new gauntlets, catching them by surprise and quickly dispatching them off by either punching with the spikes or stabbing with the blade. Maverick was covered in golden monster dust and had several cut but was still managing to fight.

Some of Apollo's kids who had died were being mauled by monsters or eaten by hellhounds and Seth spared them no mercy.

Then Percy and Annabeth arrived. They flew in on some Pegasus and landed by Michael Yew, whilst avoiding the Minotaur. Seth stepped into a monster's shadow and reappeared beside Percy who almost chopped his head off with Riptide.

"Gods, Percy! Watch where you swing that thing," He exclaimed as he ducked the blade.

"Sorry, Seth. You surprised me."

"Glad you could join us." Michael was saying. "Where are the other reinforcements?"

"For now, we're it."

"Then we're dead."

"I can make you be dead if you want?" Seth offered.

"Nah, I'm cool."

"Then stop complaining," Seth retorted. "And be thankful that you aren't dead yet."

"What about Seth?" Percy asked. "He's strong."

"Yes, but it's the Minotaur we need taken care of and Seth and the Minotaur are avoiding each other like the plague."

At the questioning glances directed at him Seth shrugged, "I don't like cows."

"Do you still have your flying chariot?" Annabeth asked.

"No, left it at Camp. I told Clarisse she could have it – no really worth fighting for anymore. But she said it was too late, we'd insulted her honour for the last time, apparently."

"At least you tried." Percy said.

"Yeah, I called her some names when she said she still wouldn't fight. I doubt that really helped."

"Incoming!" Seth yelled and Michael launched an arrow towards the enemy which Seth set on fire. It made a screaming sound as it flew. When it landed it unleashed a blast of music. The nearest cars exploded and car alarms were set off, monsters dropped their weapons and clutched their ears whilst others dissolved. Seth's face twisted in pain and he covered his ears.

"Damn, I hate those arrows."

"Yes, well that was my last sonic arrow." Michael groaned.

"Gift from your dad?" Percy asked. "God of music?"

"Loud music can be bad for you."

"I think its always bad for you." Seth said whilst hearing ringing in his ears.

"We have to fall back. I've got Kayla and Austin setting traps further down the bridge."

"No. Bring your campers to this position and wait for my signal. We're going to drive the enemy back to Brooklyn."

"How do you plan to do that?" Michael laughed.

"Percy, let me come with you." Annabeth said.

"Too dangerous, besides, I need you to help Michael co-ordinate the defence line. You're a daughter of Athena, planning is your speciality. I'll distract the monsters. You group up here, and then you can start picking off monsters while I keep them focused on me. If anybody can do all that, you can – Seth help me with the monsters."

"Thanks a lot." Michael snorted. Percy kept his eyes on Annabeth who reluctantly agreed.

"Don't I get a kiss for luck? It's kind of a tradition, right?" Percy asked and Seth started laughing.

"Come back here alive, Seaweed Brain. Then we'll see."

Percy and Seth stepped out from behind a school and faced the enemy, walking straight up the bridge in plain sight. Seth charged ahead with his swords aflame and barrelled into the enemy lines, his eyes flashing. Percy followed at a more controlled pace and charged the Minotaur whilst Seth protected his back and flanks. The monsters created a circle around Percy and the Minotaur with Seth dancing through their ranks, his cloak was torn and his blood was almost completely golden. Percy quickly destroyed the Minotaur and re-joined Seth in diminishing the army. The monsters were retreating and Seth felt his leg go numb as something in his pocket reached a freezing temberature.

"Yes! That's what I'm talking about." Michael Yew shouted.

"Percy! You've already routed them. Pull back, we're overextended!" Annabeth yelled. Seth looked where the enemy was running to and grabbed Percy's arm to stop him from moving.

"Percy, it's Kronos! Stop, he'll kill you!" Seth yelled and Percy stopped in his tracks. The monsters running towards Kronos' lines were absorbed into the new force and Kronos trotted forward, taking off his helm.

"Ok. Now, we pull back." Percy yelled as Kronos charged. Seth whistled and a fire tornado formed beside him, Kolasi was standing there and stomping on the ground. Seth pulled himself into the saddle and sat beside Percy.

"Retreat, I'll hold them!" Percy yelled at everyone but Seth and Annabeth refused and stood beside him as Kronos' honour guard approached. The three slowly backed up the bridge as Kronos approached. Kronos' guard were on them in a matter of seconds. He advanced slowly and leisurely. Percy tried to wound and not kill whilst Seth turned Kolasi in circles and wounded any enemy that got too close but like Percy, he didn't kill any. Annabeth and Percy stood shoulder to shoulder and Seth circled around them. Blackjack and Porkpie were flying in and kicking the enemies' helmets. Then Annabeth cried out in pain and everything seemed to slow down. Percy glared at the enemy that had harmed Annabeth and slammed him in the face with his sword.

"Get back!" Percy yelled. "No one touches her!"

"Interesting," Kronos murmured. He towered above the two demigods on his skeletal horse, scythe in one hand. Seth was still wounding enemy Half-Bloods and gradually fighting his way through them to get to Kronos' flank. He glanced at Percy, Hold him a minute.

"Bravely fought, Jackson. But surrender, or the girl dies."

"Percy, don't." Annabeth murmured.

"Blackjack!" Percy yelled and Blackjack flew down, kicking an enemy Half-Blood in the head for good measure before rising up with Annabeth's armour clamped in his teeth, she hung down as Blackjack flew away.

"Someday soon, I am going to make Pegasus soup. But, in the meantime, I'll settle for another dead demigod." Kronos dismounted and Seth chose that moment to attack, he urged Kolasi into a gallop and charged at the Titan Lord with his two swords flashing. Kronos barely spared him a glance and swung the scythe behind him, taking Kolasi's front legs off and sending Seth flying over the side of the bridge. He grabbed onto the side with on hand as his swords skittered over the edge.

Kronos looked at Seth hanging onto the edge with a raised eyebrow then turned to look at Percy, "A futile effort, Jackson."

Percy met Kronos' first attack with Riptide and kicked him legs out from under him. Riptide impaled the ground where Kronos' body was a second ago.

"So, you visited the Styx. If only you had hosted my body instead of Luke, I had to pressure Castellan in many ways to take a dip…. but no matter. I am still much more powerful. I am a Titan!" He slammed the butt of his scythe into the bridge and sent Percy flying back with a wave of pure force. With a cry Seth found himself flying through the air by the wave of force and slammed into the wall the demigods' side of the bridge, disappearing into the shadows underneath. Dozens of demigods were sent flying off the edge and into the water below.

"Michael, go!" Percy yelled to the son of Apollo who was crouched on a suspension cable a few metres away from him.

"Percy, the bridge, it's already weak!" Michael replied and Percy looked at the ground which was almost destroyed by the battering it had taken. "Break it, use your powers!"

Percy stabbed Riptide into the tarmac and it sank up to its hilt. Water shot from the crack and Percy pulled out his blade. The fissure grew and expanded across the whole bridge. In a few seconds a twenty metre fissure opened in the Williamsburg Bridge between Percy and Kronos. Kronos studied the problem then smiled across the gap as Percy looked behind him. Apollo healers were crowded around someone on the ground and Percy turned to thank Michael Yew but he had disappeared. Percy turned back to Kronos who was watching with a smile.

"Well done, Percy Jackson. Well played," the Titan Lord mocked. "But, I didn't just come here to show how easily I could crush you. I came to this bridge to collect someone who I believe should join my army instead of helping in the shadows." All of the campers looked at each other accusingly and the Apollo healers moved back so Percy could see who they were healing. Seth slowly stood up and limped to join Percy.

"Seth, but-"

"Shadows," Seth said with a smile playing at his lips.

"Come forward," Kronos ordered scanning the camps crowded together. "And take your place in my army. You know who I am talking to."

The campers shifted and muttered amongst themselves and Seth moved to step forward.

"What are you doing?" Percy hissed.

"I am joining my Lord." Seth said impassively.

"But, you swore-"

"That I wasn't working for Luke, or Kronos. I know. I'm working for myself." Seth smiled.

"I'll kill you if you go over there." Percy said bringing Riptide up to Seth's chest. Seth looked at the blade then lit his body on fire and Percy stepped back as Seth leisurely strolled across the chasm with the wind supporting him.

"My Lord," Seth bowed to Kronos. "I am reporting for duty." The campers watched angrily.

Kronos raised his hand and an orb made of mist hovered above it. In it Seth could see a black fortress below a red sky, and countless orange bumps on the rocky ground stretching far as the eye could see, like blisters on skin, bursting and monsters clawing their way out of them.

"Do you know what these are, Seth?" Kronos asked as he looked at the orb and Seth shook his head. "These are memories, your memories to be specific." Seth's eyes widened and he looked at the memories with wide eyes.

"Is that Tartarus?" He asked.

"Yes," Kronos answered as he looked at Seth and his hand darted towards the adopted son of Hades, the memories were absorbed into Seth's chest and he froze as images flashed through his head before his eyes rolled up and he slumped forward. Kronos caught Seth and lifted him onto his horse before taking off with a mocking salute at Percy.

"Well, that was unexpected." Percy said.
