CHAPTER 30 – WELCOME TO STORYBROOKE
"We're leaving today!" Emma shouted.
"No! We're not. You have to help me. Neal must go with us and he isn't ready yet. I'm not leaving until he comes with me." Gold threatened.
"I don't care if you are coming or not, what I care about is that I have fulfilled my part of our deal. I found your son and I even convinced him to talk to you, even if he hates you, but now I'm taking Henry and Regina back to Storybrooke." She shouted once again.
Henry was watching the fight from far and Neal was not dealing well with this entire situation. He wanted to spend more time getting to know Henry better, but he still could not believe what Tamara had done. He could not believe she was able to hurt a pregnant woman. It does not matter who she was.
Neal entered the apartment, but due to the fight that was happening inside, they had not noticed his presence yet. Regina was still sleeping. She had spent the rest of the last day sleeping and just got up to eat a little and go to the bathroom when necessary and then she went back to sleep.
"I don't know how you're going back, because the car is mine and I'm not letting you go back with it." Mr. Gold warned.
Emma glared at him.
"You son of the bitch! Can you not see she needs a hospital? She's not fine. I fulfilled my part of the deal, fulfill yours!" Emma yelled, her eyes full of tears of hate.
"I didn't make any deal with yo-"
"STOP!" Neal yelled and interrupted the fight. Henry had tears of worry in his eyes. "You're an idiot. You're still the same as always, a selfish man who thinks just about yourself!" He said pointing his finger to Mr. Gold's face. "That woman, the Evil Queen" and he said those two last words with a sarcastic voice, "she's not fine, but what do you see? You just see your side and what you want. You didn't care about me when I needed you, you don't care about anyone."
"Bae, my son, please listen to me-"
"I'll not listening to anything. You can't stay here in my apartment anymore. And if the problem is a car, okay, I'll give my car up so Emma and Henry can return to Storybrooke." He said picking up the car keys and tossed it on the table between them.
"No, you can't kick me out of here." Mr. Gold said offended.
"Of course I can, and I will!" Neal screamed and ran toward Mr. Gold in a moment of anger. Emma went to stop Neal from punching Mr. Gold and Henry went to his father, looking scared, but one voice choked with fatigue and sleep interrupted what would be the beginning of a physical altercation.
"What is happening?" Regina was leaning against one wall, looking scared for the adults arguing in the room.
"Regina..." Emma turned away from the men and ran toward the woman, but the brunette pulled away. "It's okay, Regina, we were just..."
"You said I could trust them." She said with eyes starting to fill with tears. "Why is he fighting and wanting to hurt Mr. Gold?"
The four looked at each other. Regina was defending Mr. Gold? Never! She really lost her memories. Emma could see Regina moving away, physically and emotionally. From the first minute Emma laid her eyes on this new Regina, she always saw something like fear in her eyes. Regina was constantly afraid of the people around her, she did not know if she could trust them. Emma thought she had won the woman's confidence, but it seemed like it would be much more difficult than that.
"Regina, it's not what it seems." Emma began, reaching out to touch her, but the woman pulled away again.
"Mom, don't worry, you can still trust us. At least Emma and me. We'll not hurt you, ever." He said approaching her and wrapping her in a hug.
To Emma's relief, Regina returned her son's embrace and seemed to get quieter. The fear in her eyes was replaced by doubts and uncertainties.
"Regina, we're going home today." Emma said.
"Home?" Regina asked confused.
"No, you're not going today." Mr. Gold said with a serious tone.
"Yes, you are. The keys are here, Emma. You can go when you want." Neal said and placed the car keys in Emma's hand.
"Thank you, Neal." Emma looked gratefully at him and turned to Regina. "You remember I told you I'd take you to the hospital?" Emma asked and the brunette nodded. "It will be our first stop once we get in Storybrooke, I promise, okay?"
The woman just nodded.
"Henry, can you help your mom to pack her things? Our things are ready and we are leaving soon. I'll just finish an issue here with these two." She winked at the boy and watched as he dragged his mother by the hand to the bedroom.
"You should come with us... I would like so much to spend some time with you." Henry said embracing Neal.
"Me too, but I need to resolve some things first." When these words were spoken, Neal saw Henry's face contorting with sadness. "But I promise I'll find you, I'll go to Storybrooke, I loved meeting you, boy." He said with a smile and hugged his son again.
"I'll see you soon, then. Bye." Henry said running to the car where his brunette mother was waiting.
Emma saw the two come together into the car and she knew it was time to leave. She had so many reasons to be angry with Neal, but maybe it was time to leave the past behind.
"Bye, Neal. I'll see you in Storybrooke in a few days."
"I'll be there."
"Don't disappoint me, Neal. Don't break Henry's heart, please. He'll be waiting for you."
"I won't. Besides, you're taking my car. I have to go get it anyway." Neal tried joking.
"Okay." She smiled. "So, I think that's it, bye." She disappeared into the driver's seat and the car was soon out of sight.
Mr. Gold insisted on staying, but Neal did not accept that man stay in his apartment. Mr. Gold would have a long walk ahead to try to get his son's forgiveness and trust, but he would try, no matter what.
Archie was a nervous wreck. He barely slept all week and so far Emma had not let him talk to Regina. She had said Regina was fine, but he was worried.
The truth was that Emma had not told anyone what had happened to Regina's memory and she was very worried about what people's reactions will be when they find out. The fact is that Storybrooke is a city full of magic and Regina could not even hear that word without shuddering. Emma was afraid that once they got to the city, Regina would see someone casting fireballs or fairies making magic with their wands or wolves that were actually people... She had to keep Regina away from magic and Storybrooke was the worst place for it, but it was also her home.
"We are coming today, Archie. I promise I'll call you as soon as we arrive and then you can see her." Emma explained on the phone, taking advantage that Regina had fallen into a peaceful sleep in the passenger seat.
"No, Archie. She's fine. I will not pass the phone to her now because she's sleeping."
"I'm not lying." Emma rolled her eyes, the man was really freaking out. She could not imagine what it would be when he found out she had no memories, when he sees her bruises and injuries, and knows she did not remember him, she did not remember anything.
"Ok, I'll pass the phone to him." Emma said when the man asked to speak to Henry. She knew, through Archie's voice, he had not believed her and asked to speak with the boy to confirm her story. Emma handed the phone to the kid sitting in the back seat and gave him a serious look as if asking the boy not to tell the whole story, not yet.
"Hi, Archie."
"I missed you too, mom is here with us."
"Yes, she's fine, she's just sleeping. She is very tired."
"Okay, we'll call you." The boy hung up and turned to his blonde mother. Emma realized that the boy was thoughtful and decided to reassure him.
"She'll be fine, Henry." Emma said.
"I know." The boy whispered still stuck in thoughts.
"So what? Why are you silent?"
"We should have told Archie about mom. He doesn't know anything about what happened to her. He'll get so worried when he sees her bruises." The boy blurted. "We shouldn't have lied, Emma."
There he was again with this Emma business. Even after everything that has happened recently, she knew that the boy was still upset because of the lie she had told about his father.
"We didn't lie, Henry. She's fine, we just didn't tell everything, but I promise I'll explain it to him. The problem is that he would have been so scared and worried if we were to tell him what really happened to her. I didn't know what he would have done. He might even try to leave the city to find her and we'd end up having to go after him too, he would also lose his memories."
"I know." He replied with his head down and turned his attention to the road, still with a scowl on his face, showing that something was still bothering him.
"What else?" Emma gave a quick glance at the boy through the rearview mirror.
"What?"
"What else is bothering you?"
"What do we do when we get there?"
"How so?"
"She doesn't remember anyone, she doesn't even remember me and she is afraid of everyone... what if someone comes up with magic? What if someone says she's the Evil Queen?" He asked these two questions whispering almost afraid that the brunette could hear him. "She'll be so scared. We're also lying to her. She trusts us."
"Yes, she trusts us and it is why we'll be there to protect your mom. Archie, us, David and Snow, Ruby and Granny... there are many people who will not let anything happen to her."
"Yes, but we're still lying to her. I don't like lying to her. I've done it so many times and someone always ended up hurt." The boy smiled sadly.
"Henry, you were there, you saw when she came. You saw she was scared and she trembled just hearing the words magic and Evil Queen. She'd run from us if we said all this is real and we can't take that risk, she trusts us, Henry, and we need to do whatever possible to protect her. And the safest place she can be is in Storybrooke, where her home is." Emma explained. She did not like to lie, but it was for a good reason, right?
"What if Greg and Tamara come after her again?"
"They will not come. We'll take care of it. I'll ask for help from the Blue Fairy and we can try to cast a spell that hides Storybrooke, at least until Mr. Gold gets back. I'd ask Regina to teach me, but I think there is no possibility, is there?" She tried to joke, but the boy only nodded slightly at her.
The journey by car was long. Regina spent most of the time sleeping. Now, the three had stopped at a diner and were eating. Emma took the time that Regina went to the bathroom to talk to Henry.
"Henry, can you stay here and watch your mom? I need to talk to Mary Margaret. You were right, I need to ask her to explain everything to Archie and ask her to tell everyone that Regina has no memories, so it's good they stop this whole thing of magic and Evil Queen or anything else..." Emma stopped talking when she saw Regina coming toward the table.
"Is everything okay?" Regina asked, noticing Emma's startled look, but it was Henry who intervened.
"It's okay, mom, what are you going to eat?"
"I need to make a call, I will not be long. I'll be back." Emma warned.
Both nodded and the woman left the diner.
"Okay Emma, when do you think you'll be arriving?" Snow asked.
"In a few hours, it's a long drive. I need one more favor."
"What?"
"I'll let you know when we get there, but I'm taking Regina straight to the hospital. Can you take care of things there? Can you chat with Whale?"
"Of course, Emma. I'm going there right now." the woman said quietly.
"One more thing..." Emma asked timidly. "Don't let Archie know that she's in town as soon as we get there."
"What?" Emma could hear the shrill voice of her mother.
"Look, Mary Marg-"
"No, Emma. I can't do this, you know how Archie is? He is so tired, he barely slept for the last few days and he is so worried."
"Regina doesn't remember him, she doesn't remember anyone. She is afraid of everyone. How do you think she will feel if as soon as she put her foot out of the car she is attacked by Archie?"
"He is the father of her children!" Snow pondered once more.
"I know, but... you don't understand, Mary Margaret, she's scared. He needs to take it easy, I know he's worried about her, I understand, but he can't come running up to her asking questions, that is exactly what he will do. She doesn't remember him. She doesn't know who he is."
"Then, make sure she knows! Show a picture, tell her who he is, because I can't let Archie suffer at home while Regina is in the hospital."
"Mary Marg-" Emma tried to debate again, but was interrupted.
"Emma, I'll see you in a few hours. Please be careful... I love you, okay?"
"Okay." she sighed. She would love to say I love you too, but she was not ready for it. "Ok then, I'll call you when we arrive, bye."
"Bye."
"How long till we get there?" Henry asked, he was getting bored of the trip.
"A few hours, Henry, maybe two or three." Emma said.
Regina was silent, she was lost looking at the scenery passing outside and running her hands gently on her swollen belly.
"What are you thinking?" Emma asked, glancing at the woman beside her.
"Hm..." Regina stammered "I... I was just thinking, I... I don't remember anyone. I don't even remember my own son. What if people get upset with me?" Regina asked innocently.
You have a thousand things to worry about and that's what you're worried about? Seriously? The Regina I know would not be this worried. Emma thought and then a smile crossed her face.
"It's true. Some people may be sad because you don't remember them." Emma commented and got a questioning look from her son. "But... we can show you some pictures... so you will not feel so lost and they will not get so upset, what do you think?" She volunteered excitedly.
Regina thought for a moment and then a smile graced her affections. "That's a great idea."
Henry perked up and grabbed his cell phone. He had pictures of almost all of Storybrooke, he's a smart kid and well liked in the town.
"Here". The boy offered the phone that already showed a photo.
Regina picked up the phone and began to look through the photos, not recognizing anything or anyone, it was so bad the feeling of not knowing who you can trust, who is who. Henry was leaning back behind the passenger seat, pointing and explaining each photo. Emma could only laugh.
"Who is this?" Regina asked.
"Ah, this is Ruby. She is waitress at the best restaurant in town, Granny's. By the way, Granny is, indeed, Ruby's Grandma."
"Hm..." She passed the photo and found Henry with two short men. "And these? This man seems angry." She pointed out.
Emma had to stifle laughter. She glanced at the phone on Regina's belly and saw Leroy. He seems angry. That's because he is Grumpy from Snow White's fairytale!
"Ah, this is Leroy and this... this is Mr. Clark. He is owner of the pharmacy." Henry explained. They are also Grumpy and Sneezy!
"And these?"
"Oh, these are grandpa-" The boy's eyes widened when he realized what he was about to say.
Emma glanced at the photo and saw her parents. She almost choked.
"He's my brother." Emma replied quickly, looking frightened at Henry, who had the same frightened look.
"Yes, he's Emma's brother and she's his wife." Henry replied. They had already explained a bit about Emma's situation, because Regina was confused when she heard the boy calling both women as "mom" or "mother".
"David and Mary Margaret." Emma said.
Regina looked at the picture more closely and smiled.
"Hey, you have his eyes, you really look like him." Regina said.
Emma turned her attention to the road hoping that Regina did not look at her to see the blush rising on her face. Regina continued through the photos. There were a lot of pictures of Henry with Emma and some of him with Regina.
"This is my belly?" Regina asked astonished when she saw a picture of a belly with a strange bump.
The boy looked around and grinned cheekily. "Yes, they were crazy that day. You said it hurt sometimes. They were kicking really strong." He said happily remembering the day the photo was taken.
"Wow! They haven't done this a lot these past few days. I feel them moving, but they are very calm." Regina said, and then she was silent. Are my babies fine?
The two noticed Regina's concerned look and Emma saw the same in Henry's eyes. Henry always said how the girls were active and she did not realize Regina complaining or commenting about that since she was found.
"They are fine, Regina, I'm sure." Emma tried to calm her down.
"What if they're not? I don't feel them moving as much." Regina said and passed one of her hands in the corner of her belly.
"I know how they become agitated." The boy jumped from the back seat. The excitement was evident in his voice. "They love it when I play and talk with them... but they may be sleeping." The boy said. Or they may have lost their memories too, can they? No!
"They aren't. They are moving, but very little." Regina said rubbing her hand on her belly.
"We'll see." The boy was excited.
Regina pushed the passenger seat back and Henry was beside her in a second. His small hands massaging Regina's belly. Emma had slowed the car, she did not want to take any chances.
Then, the boy put his mouth on Regina's belly and began to speak. His voice was soft, but firm and high.
"Hey, little sisters. What are you doing in there? You are too calm, you aren't like this." As he spoke, he kept squeezing his fingers gently on Regina's belly.
It was a new sensation for Regina. Seeing the boy claiming to be her son having all this intimacy with her, it was somehow reassuring. She knew she could trust him and they both would not hurt her. Listening to him talk to her belly was so beautiful, he loved his little sisters and she can see and feel it. The boy was as distraught as Regina, both watching intently waiting for any movement.
"Hm... you don't want to play with me?" The boy pretended to be upset, but again nudged. "You like it when I do that, right?" He said, shaking fingertips when one of the familiar movements were beginning to be apparent.
"Whoa!" Regina's eyes widened when she saw the swollen bump starting to make its way through her belly.
"I told you... they know who I am." The boy said proudly. "And that? You like that, do you?" He put his mouth on her belly and began to blow, making some strange noises.
"Ouch." Regina muttered, frowning.
"Are you okay?" Emma turned quickly to look at the woman.
"Yes... She just kicked a little hard, I just... I guess I'm not used to it." She smiled.
"Of course you are!" Henry said as he continued talking to the belly. "They can do much more than that, can't you?"
After many minutes with everyone laughing happily in the car, the movements of the girls started to calm down.
"I think they're asleep." Henry said, pushing the ear from Regina's belly and looking at her.
"They must be tired." Regina smiled at the boy.
"Yes, they should be. They like to stay up late at night."
"Really?" Regina stared once more.
"At least that's what you say all the time." He smiles and goes back to his sitting position. He picks up the phone that was forgotten long ago and extends it to Regina. "You haven't finished the pictures."
"It's true." She smiles. "Let's see."
She saw some pictures of a dog, a Dalmatian.
"You have a lot of pictures of this dog, it's ours?" Regina asked.
"Which one?" Henry said with a smile on his face.
"Which one?" Regina frowned in confusion. "Well, the one that appears in a lot of pictures."
The boy left a chuckle escape. "Actually, there's two. One female and one male. You see? Their collars are different and their color of the ears too." The boy pointed to screen. "This is Pongo, Archie's dog. He has a black collar and he has a lot of black flecks on the ear," He passed to the next photo. "And this, this is Perdita. She is your dog." And at that time, Regina's eyes widened.
"I have a dog?"
"Mhmm. She's equal to Pongo, she only has less flecks than him and her collar is blue." He said.
"She is very beautiful." Regina smiled.
"Yes, she is. We took weeks to find her." Henry said.
"We?" Regina turned to him, confused.
"Archie and me. Pongo likes you a lot, so we decided to give you her." He smiled.
"Who is Archie?"
Emma and Henry looked up and let out a sigh. What should they say?
"He is your babies' father." Emma answered quickly, diverting attention from the road to observe Regina's reaction. Surprise.
"Oh." Regina gasped. "Henry, do you have a pic of him?"
"Of course I have." He passed a few more photos and found what he wanted. "Here!"
Regina stared at the image for several seconds. She was trying to force her memory, trying to remember something, anything, but nothing came. The man in the picture was still a stranger to her.
"We're married?" Regina asked. Her voice was lower than usual, shyness taking over her.
"No, you aren't..." Emma replied and watched Regina's forehead furrowing in confusion, before the brunette could ask anything, she continued. "It's a long story."
Regina muttered something that sounded like "mhmm", but Emma can't be sure. Regina seemed disappointed.
"He's your boyfriend." Henry said.
"Henry!" Emma's eyes widened and she almost shouted at the boy.
What is he doing? He can't lie to her. He is not her boyfriend. Well, perhaps? Finding Archie lying in her bed was no evidence to the contrary, was it? Emma was interrupted from her thoughts by Regina.
"My boyfriend?" She asked, but she did not seem to be asking a question, she seemed to be trying to remember, trying not to fit over this news.
"Mhmm." Henry nodded.
After a while looking at his picture, the two could not help but smile when Regina let out a comment.
"He's beautiful. He has beautiful eyes."
I knew it! This was Emma and Henry's thought at the instant they heard what was said. They looked through the rearview mirror and could only laugh.
"Where was this?" She asked some photos later.
"Oh, it was at Mary Margaret's birthday." Emma replied.
"Yes... You were dancing with Archie for so long, then he took us home, but you ended up sleeping in the car." Henry said.
Regina looked at a few more photos and heard more comments from the boy. Her son. Sometime later, the fatigue had taken care of her and she slept again. A feeling of weakness had never left her since Emma found her. She was not awake when Emma and Henry saw "Welcome to Storybrooke."
So? Are you ready to get back to Storybrooke? haha
I love reading your reviews... Thank you all! You rock, guys!
