CHAPTER 32 – ICE CREAM
"I don't know how to bring her back." Archie said disappointed, almost desperate.
He had spent the last two days trying to figure out a way to bring back Regina's memory. He had to wait until Mr. Gold got back so he could ask for his help. The Blue Fairy simply had no idea how to do that.
As soon as Mr. Gold appeared in the city, Archie was there, along with Emma and David. Neal came with him. He had a hard time trying to believe that Tamara had lied to him all this time. But he realized, even against everything he believed, that she, indeed, had tricked him.
Mr. Gold would have killed Greg if he could, but he wouldn't risk it without his magic and he preferred to return to the city along with his son. He would think about what to do once he got to town, once he got his power back.
"There's only one way to bring her back." Mr. Gold mused.
"True Love's kiss." David and Emma whispered almost in unison.
"No!" Archie almost screamed in frustration. "That didn't work."
The three looked at Archie with wide eyes.
"Did you already kiss her?" Mr. Gold said awestruck.
"When you-" Emma began to wonder, her mouth was still open from the shock of the recent words. "That's why she was so strange yesterday." She frowned, remembering the brunette's attitude on the previous day.
"Nothing happened?" David asked a little confused. He had seen the two together before and he had to admit, he saw, even though the two don't admit it, the love that emanated from their eyes when they looked at each other and spoke to each other.
"No." Archie whispered sadly.
Mr. Gold halted all interaction and decided to stop. How can they be so stupid? He let out an exalted breath calling everyone's attention.
"It's obvious that didn't work. She isn't the same Regina you know. Archie can love her, but she needs to love him back. This is the only way that the true love's kiss works, it must be reciprocated. This version of Regina must fall in love with Archie so that the curse can be broken." Mr. Gold explained.
"How will I do that, David?" For the first time, Archie was letting all his emotions be shown in front of his friend. The fatigue of last week, the sadness and disappointment were well defined in his face.
"Show her the man she fell in love with." David said. "She needs you, Archie."
"But I just don't know how to bring her back. I love her more than anything and I know that my Regina loves me too, but she doesn't remember me. She doesn't remember she loves me."
"When Snow and I were cursed, we didn't remember that we loved each other, but there was this feeling that ruptured inside my chest, I was sure that she could complete me..." He began to ramble. "And I know, by the way that this Regina acts when she is close to you, that she also feels the same, she just can't understand."
"What if she never loves me again? What if this version of her doesn't love me?"
"She loves you. It's already in her eyes, Archie. Just be there for her."
While Archie, David and Emma went to Mr. Gold's store, Regina and Snow were spending some time together. Regina being alone was out of the question, and as Emma and David had to be at the station, Snow almost had to beg Archie to spend some time with Regina.
The two were in front of City Hall. Regina insisted on knowing where she worked and since Snow was the one who was taking her position, no one better than her to lead Regina.
"Good morning, Madam Mayor." Kylie stood up as soon as she saw Regina entering with Snow. "It's wonderful to see you're back."
"Regina, this is Kylie. She's your secretary." Snow introduced her with a smile full of security.
"Hi, Kylie. Thank you, but I'm not back yet..." Regina smiled a little embarrassed. "I need to remember a few things first."
"Alright, Regina. Come." Snow pulled her into her office.
As soon as Regina entered the office, she was speechless and Snow could see, through the glow of her eyes, she was in love with the office.
"So, what do you think?"
"Wow, it's beautiful..." She smiled. "It's very beautiful."
"This is where you work." Snow said. "I'm doing your job for now, which sucks because it seems that only you can do it right."
Regina smiled at her and began making her way toward the table in the center of the office when her eyes saw a basket full of apples. Snow, watching the scene, saw when Regina's eyes instantly lit up with desire and, if possible, joy.
"Apples." Regina whispered in complete joy and ran toward the basket of apples. She paused a bit before picking up one and turned to Snow. "Can I have one?"
Snow couldn't hide the smile. "They are yours, of course you can."
The coincidence couldn't be higher. The Evil Queen was here, in front of Snow White, asking if she could eat an apple.
Regina smiled and took one of the apples, turning to look at the huge amount of papers on the table.
"Looks like you have a lot of work to do today, Mary Margaret." Regina said with full mouth.
"Glad you noticed, because you're spending the whole day with me." Snow replied quickly.
Regina's face contorted and Snow laughed again.
"And I'll have to do this work?"
"Only if you want." Snow smiled. "But don't forget that, in fact, this job is yours."
"This is going to be tedious. I thought we were going out for a chat or an ice cream?" She said with a slightly childish smile.
"Ice cream again? I know Archie took a pint of ice cream to you yesterday."
"Yes, he did." And as she said these words, her cheeks turned red and immediately Snow noticed it.
"What was that?" Snow asked with wide eyes and a smile on her face.
"What?" Regina tried to control the red cheeks, but she just couldn't.
"You're blushing..." Snow sang the words and Regina got even redder. "Oh, come on, you can tell me."
"I don't know what you're talking about." She tried to disguise, but her whole body told a different story. As if it couldn't get worse, Regina let the apple escape her hand.
"Don't know, huh?" Snow squinted and laughed out loud when Regina made a face like she had been caught.
"All right. Him... hm... yesterday... hm he kissed me, it was."
"He what?" Snow gaped.
Due to the experience she had and the various conversations she had with David in the last few days, she faithfully believed that a kiss of true love could bring Regina's memories back. She had no doubt that what Regina and Archie had was true love. They created it together through months and it was becoming visible to those who stopped to watch them. But now, Regina was here in front of her saying that Archie had kissed her and she had no memories back.
They definitely had a huge problem.
"Hm... we were... we were just talking and he... he was feeling the girls move, because they move quite a lot when they hear his voice, and..." Regina was stuttering. Telling it to the woman in front of her was not uncomfortable, but it was different. She simply did not know what she should feel. "And he... kind of kissed me and... and I kissed him back."
"And you don't remember anything?"
"How so?"
"Your memories, you didn't remember anything? No image, some memory, anything?"
Regina shrugged and shook her head. Still feeling weird about the conversation, she decided to call Snow's attention to something else.
"So, about the papers, what do you need to do?" Regina said, pointing to the pile of papers waiting for them at the table.
"Well, I need to check some accounts, look at some quotes and sign some stuff, but don't worry, you're going to help me."
"Am I?"
"Yes, you are. Or you don't want to taste the wonderful ice cream that only Granny has?"
"Yes!" Regina vibrated with happiness. "What do I need to do?"
Snow began to teach a few things to Regina, but the woman quickly learned and clung to the paperwork. Now they were both seated facing each other.
Archie called every hour asking if Regina was fine, or if they needed anything or he just wanted to hear her voice.
Occasionally, Snow looked away from the papers to observe Regina, who was looking through the papers with an almost tangible concentration. In one of those times, Regina caught Snow staring absently.
"What?"
"What what?" Snow asked getting out of her trance.
"You're staring at me." Regina said with a smile.
"Yes, I guess I am." Snow said, her voice was a little lower than normal. "I'm sorry, I just... I was just remembering the day we met."
"But you look sad... we didn't like each other?"
"No, that's not it," Snow smiled. "It was just a long, long time ago."
"Well, I don't remember it and we still have this pile of paper to look at, I'd love to hear that story." Regina smiled.
"You sure?"
"Of course, I'd love to know how we arrived from hating each other to this."
"We didn't hate each other." Not at first, Snow thought.
"I'll pretend to believe you. Come on, now I want to know."
"I'll tell you then. But I'm tired of sitting here. Let's go to the couch?"
"Yes, please. My back is killing me." Regina said as she rose from the chair and walk towards the couch with her hands massaging her aching back.
Snow was sitting in one of the armchairs and Regina was sitting on the large sofa. Both had their own stack of paper in their hands.
"I was 13 when this happened. My mother had recently died and my father was sad. His biggest dream was to find a woman to take my mother's place and take care of me. Thus, we began to make long journeys in search of this woman. My father was a very wealthy man and many women approached us just because of money. On that day, we were riding horses. Suddenly the horse I was riding got spooked and ran." She said and noted that Regina was no longer moving in her papers, her attention was focused on Snow. "I was so scared. I thought I was going to die. As much as I screamed and tried to stop the horse, he just wouldn't stop. I was holding the reins of that horse as if my life depended on it, and in fact, it depended. But there came a point that I thought about giving up and just let go, because he was getting faster. I was about to be thrown. I would've been killed. I was screaming desperately for help, but it seemed no one could hear me. No one except you."
"Me?" Regina asked quickly.
"Yes, you." Snow laughed. "You came running in on a horse and gave me your hand. I was so scared. All I saw was a hand that could keep me from falling and I held on and trusted you."
"I saved you?" Regina asked in shock.
"Yes, you saved me. But not only from the horse. You taught me so many things. You had no idea who I was and you came riding behind me. You risked your own life and changed me. My mother always told me to keep goodness in my heart and you proved to me that she was right." Snow was saying those words carefully and most of all, with affection and love. She remembers having said all that to Regina when she was disguised as Wilma in the Enchanted Forest, but, perhaps, here they can have another chance.
Regina didn't even blink while Snow was telling the story. It seemed so surreal, but the eyes of the woman in front of her assured that there was no kind of lie being told. She was lost in Snow's words.
"Hey... are you still listening to me?" Snow asked calling Regina's attention.
"I'm listening." She whispered. "It changed you?"
Snow smiled at the mention of the last words. It was as if the history was repeating itself, even Regina's words were the same.
"Yes. You taught me that there may be this genuine and selfless connection between people. Even strangers."
So Snow's eyes widened when she saw tears running down Regina's eyes.
"Hey, are you okay?" Snow rose, approaching Regina and crouched in front of her, so she took her hands in hers.
"Yes... I... I'm fine." She replied. "I don't know why I'm crying, I think it's the hormones." She smiled shyly.
"Okay, it's okay. Let's return to our paperwork, then."
"No. You're not going to finish? After that, what happened? How did we become friends?" Regina said holding one of Snow's hands.
"It's a long story. I promise I'll tell you later. If you don't regain your memories soon, I promise I'll tell you what happened next and how we got here."
"Hm... Ok."
Snow returned to her chair and her duties. She tried her best not to get lost in thoughts and memories. She ran her eyes over some papers and when her pile had reached the end, she looked at Regina just to find her asleep on the couch with some papers resting on her belly.
She smiled at Regina's image. Even bruised and tired, she was still beautiful. The real Regina would never fall asleep in front of Snow that way. She was very proud and a perfectionist for that.
Snow stood up and took a blanket in one of the cabinets in the office. She looked at the clock and knew she still had plenty of time until the end of the workday. She took the papers that were under Regina's hands with all the care in the world not to wake her and covered her.
She heard a knock on the door and seconds later Kylie was entering the room.
"Mary Margaret, the secreta-"
"Shhhh!" Snow scolded the woman who was talking too loud, she looked at Regina for some sign that the brunette was waking, but Regina's face remained peaceful. "She is sleeping, talk quietly." Snow whispered.
"Sorry."
Snow moved away from Regina and headed toward the door.
"No problem, she just needs to rest and I don't want to wake her now. What do you need?"
"The Secretary of Security wants to talk to you. He's on line 2." Kylie said.
"Ok, I'll take him. Thank you."
Thus, Snow finished her day's work. When she realized, it already was time to leave and she finally had finished all the paperwork.
Archie called two more times to talk with Regina, but Snow said she was sleeping. Snow decided it was time for them to go away, so she walked over to the couch and bent close to Regina to wake her.
Looking at her, Snow felt her heart sink. This was the woman who saved her and, at the same time, the woman who tried to kill her countless times. She loved this woman. She loved her like a daughter loved a mother. She remembered the many times when she was little and she wanted to be equal to Regina. She wanted to walk like her, talk like her and be as beautiful as her.
After everything that happened between the two of them, Snow was still getting used to the idea of Regina redeeming herself. It was hard to believe at first, but she conquered Emma, David and was conquering every person close to her. Each person allowed seeing the change that she was trying to show.
Snow pulled a strand of hair that was falling on Regina's face and placed it behind her ear, for some reason she was very happy to be taking this opportunity to be like this with Regina. "You know," Snow began to whisper. "I'd give anything to see you being happy. I'd give anything to make our relationship that way." She couldn't stop a tear that left her eyes and fell on Regina's face, who began to stir. Less than a few seconds later she was staring at Snow with worried eyes.
"Hey, what time is it?" She asked huskily sleep. "I think I overslept."
"It's time to go home." Snow replied trying to hide that she had been crying, but it did not work.
"Are you crying? Why are you crying?" Regina tried to sit up, but needed Snow's help. "Are you not feeling fine?"
"No." Snow rushed to respond. "It's not that... it's just that... I'm just very, very glad you're back. That's it."
Regina grinned at her and Snow was surprised when Regina wrapped her arms around her and hugged her.
"I'm also happy. I'm happy because I feel at home, I know I'm home." Regina said.
"Yes," Snow tightened the hug even more, she did not want to let her go. "You're home and we all love you. I love you." She whispered the last sentence again and could not hold back the tears. She gently kissed Regina's forehead as a tear threatened to fall from her eyes again. "I love you so much." She smiled and tried to break the mood that had settled between them. "Now, I know I promised to take you for ice cream, I think-"
"Yes!" Regina threw both arms up, vibrating with joy. "Ice cream!"
"Come on." Snow said with a huge smile on her face.
Next day, Regina was in the kitchen with Henry and Emma, both laughing and talking.
"You want to have lunch with me?" Archie offered with a huge smile when he appeared. Pongo and Perdita were already running around the house.
She had a huge smile on her face, a smile that wouldn't leave so easily if it was the old Regina, her eyes sparkled with joy. She nodded and ran toward him, but stopped before reaching him and turned to the two people in the kitchen.
"Can I..." She pointed to Archie. "Can I go to lunch with him?"
Henry and Emma looked at each other. They almost couldn't hide the smile that they wanted to show.
"Of course!" Emma said and watched as Regina went and got Archie's hand, dragging him out of the kitchen.
"Can you take care of them for me, Henry?" Archie asked quickly referring to the two dogs, Regina was already pulling him out of the kitchen.
"Yes." The boy said cheerfully.
"Thank you." Archie's voice came a few seconds later, but he was nowhere to be seen.
It had been three days since she had left the hospital and Archie spent almost every hour of the last days with her. He did not want to stay away from her for even a minute. At first, she was still a little afraid, but Emma had suggested she spend more time with him. So she did and she loved it. He was generous, fun, shy at times, smart, handsome and he was her daughters' father.
She could not understand why they were not together. He told her everything she wanted to know, at least she thought so. He took her to Granny's restaurant and his office. She had been shocked when he told her she was the Mayor of the city.
Regina felt butterflies in her stomach when he smiled at her and when he looked at her with loving eyes. She could never control the blush that burned her cheeks.
Now, they were sitting in Granny's, one beside the other. Their hands were clasped idly. Archie did not know if he ate or watched her. She is so beautiful.
"Hi, Archie." The woman said excitedly as she approached the couple. "Hi, Regina." She spoke more serious.
"Hi, Miss Bennet." Archie replied with a smile.
Regina was looking at the woman with curious eyes. She did not know who she was. She smiled when the woman's eyes met hers again.
"Hi." Regina said with a smile.
So, Claire realized what was happening there. All she had heard was indeed true. Regina had lost her memories. She grinned at the woman. This is going to be much easier.
"Regina, this is Miss Bennet, she is-"
"A friend." The woman interrupted. "I'm a friend."
Regina smiled shyly. The worst thing was not remembering people.
"I'm sorry, I don't remember much," She hesitated. "But it's a pleasure to meet you again." She tried to joke.
"The pleasure is all mine." The woman smiled. "Well, I've gotta go eat. Bye, Archie." She gave him a huge smile. "Bye, Regina."
"Bye." They answered in unison.
Surprise! Claire is back! You don't think I had forgotten her huh? Please, I need to hear your thoughts... Who is Claire? (Não vale pra você, Marina Masterson. Sem spoilers nos meus reviews, por favor)
In the next, maybe, MAYBE, Regina is going to get some memories back. Don't get excited, this may be not a good thing!
See ya :)
Evil kisses;*
