CHAPTER 34 – CORA

"Where is she?" A very nervous Archie asked. He was exhausted and his hands were visibly shaking.

"I don't know, Archie." Emma said.

"How did you let this happen? How did no one see her getting out?" David asked.

"We haven't seen her. She said she was going to sleep, when I got to my room, the book was open on the bed." Henry explained. The boy was scared and worried.

"But wasn't the book to be hidden?"

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I thought I had hidden it well, but... but I didn't know she would find it, sorry. I didn't want her to find out." The boy began to cry.

"No, Henry... it's okay... we'll find her." Snow hugged the boy.

"Yes, we'll find her, she can't have gone far." David tried to reassure them.

"It's there." Claire pointed out of the car.

"But I don't see anything." Regina replied, her eyes were searching for any movement.

"The mine is just ahead. I can't take you there. You asked me to bring you here, but I said I wouldn't go with you."

Regina sighed. Should she trust her? But the desire and need to see her mother were bigger and she needed to know if all this was true, if she wasn't going crazy.

"Will you at least wait for me?" Regina asked looking deep into the eyes of the woman sitting in the driver's seat and looking for some sense of security.

"Of course." She smiled. "I'll be right here. Take the time you need."

"Thank you." Regina said when she left and started walking in the direction that Claire had given her.

"Regina, what are you doing here?" Leroy said when he saw her approaching the entrance to the mine. He didn't see from where the woman came and from what he had been told, she had lost all of her memories. She couldn't remember who she was.

Regina watched as the dwarf marched toward her. One of Snow White's idiot dwarves. By what Regina remembered, he was not trustworthy and she was the Queen.

"I came to see my mother." She said seriously.

Leroy frowned in confusion. He had been informed that she had lost all her memories, how was she here now demanding to visit her mother? After all, she seemed distressed, angry and her face and eyes were red. He realized she was crying.

"Regina, are you okay?" The dwarf asked approaching her and touching her arm. "I'll call Emma and ask-"

"How dare you?" She said as she pulled away quickly. "How dare you touch me? I am your Queen!"

He didn't understand anything. Was she playing with him? As much as she has changed, she wasn't to be pulling pranks on him. Rather, she was still as serious as before.

"Regina?" He called again "What is happen-"

"Your Majesty. You haven't learned?"

The man's mouth opened again. He was looking at the Evil Queen and her eyes were definitely hers. They were overshadowed by power, pride and anger.

"Oh my God, what's going on here?"

"I came to see my mother. Now, get out of my way." She practically growled at him, her voice caused him chills. She, even being pregnant, could still be terribly scary as before.

Knowing the Queen as he did, he knew she wouldn't draw back her foot from there until she got what she wanted. She was determined and he knew by the look on her face that something was wrong, terribly wrong. Her eyes were not the same from before. Her eyes were the eyes of the Evil Queen, but now her eyes were full of confusion and disturbance.

He stepped aside and let the woman go. He remembered the countless times she came to visit her mother in the middle of the night and he had allowed them, even having been told not to let anyone visit the woman unless by Emma and Mr. Gold. Emma never came and Mr. Gold came only once, a few weeks after Cora had been arrested.

Once the woman was out of sight, he pulled a few meters from the entrance of the mine and began to dial the number that he should have called a long time ago. Emma.

"Mother?" Regina whispered as she entered the mine.

The place was dark and it had only a few lights on the walls. In one corner of the mine she found bars and she squinted over a body lying in the darkness.

When she heard her daughter calling, Cora turned and ran toward the bars. She hadn't been sleeping well for nights. Regina had stopped visiting her and she wondered if something had happened. Regina never stopped visiting her. She has never gone so long without coming to see her.

"Regina..." Cora whispered in joy when she approached the bars, but then the smile disappeared when she could see the image of her daughter. Her bandaged wrist and forehead with some sort of cloth that looked like a bandage. At least Cora had never seen this kind of thing, but she didn't have to ask to know that they were, indeed, bandages.

"You're really alive..." Regina whispered through her tears. "I thought... I thought you were dead."

"Regina?" Cora frowned in confusion. What was her daughter talking about? "What are you talking about? I'm right here... what happened to you? Why were you gone? I was so worried."

"I... I..." Regina frowned in confusion. She knew nothing of this version of her mother who was trapped. She wasn't the powerful woman she knew. Here, in the dirt and darkness, she looked like a nobody. "Mom, I missed you..." Regina began to weep openly.

Cora, watching as her daughter seemed broken and sad, wrapped her arms through the bars of the cell, signaling that her daughter approach. Regina did as requested and even amid the bars, she felt her mother wrapping her in a tight and secure hug. It was so long that she felt a hug from her mother, at least she didn't remember.

"My little girl." Cora whispered as she pulled away from Regina to be able to really look at her wounds. "What have they done to you?" She asked running her hand over the bandage on her forehead "What is happening? Why were you gone?"

"Mother." Regina approached her head as close to her mother as possible, seeking the comfort she so desperately needed now. "I don't know what's going on... I don't remember how I got here... I don't know who to trust... it's all so confusing... "

"Oh, baby..." She whispered kissing her daughter's forehead. "You can trust me..."

Regina looked into her mother's eyes. Everything was so confusing. She did not remember so much, but she knew her mother had plenty of reasons to be angry with her and yet here she was saying sweet words... What happened in this town?

It seemed like yesterday that Regina had come to visit her for the first time. Cora had really believed that if she did not get out of that prison, she would never see her daughter. But here she was... She always comes back to her mother, no matter what.

The first visit was not pleasant. There was so much that needed to be discussed between them. Regina was still so sore, her own mother had tried to kill her, tried to kill her baby. Correction. Babies.

But after a few weeks, there she was. She had returned. Cora could not miss this chance. She had a daughter, only one daughter to recover.

Regina would like to be able to trust her mother, but trust was a luxury that Cora has not deserved. She had gotten Perdita a few weeks ago and she would love to show her to her mother, she'd love to tell her about the dog, but she would rather not talk about it. Perdita was inside the car.

The visits were becoming increasingly frequent. She always came at dawn, Cora had noticed that. Often, she could see, even in the dark, that her daughter had been crying. She knew something was bothering her daughter, but she also knew that Regina did not quite trust her yet.

"Regina, you can talk to me, you know that, right?" Cora offered. The women were sitting back to back to each other, only the grid was preventing their back to meet.

Regina sniffed. She was haunted with the nightmares. They were so scary. She was tired. She wanted so much to be able to trust someone to talk about them, but she was so afraid of being criticized.

"I've been having nightmares..." Regina whispered.

"It's because of them that you're like that?" Cora asked softly, she so wanted Regina to trust her, but she did not want to push her daughter away.

Regina nodded.

"They were so horrible..." She said with tears running down her eyes, tears that Cora could not see, but she knew they were there.

"You want to talk about it?" Cora said.

"No." Regina said.

It was a slow process, but little by little Cora was gaining Regina's trust and she knew her daughter was becoming more attached. She came at least once a week.

One day, Regina appeared in the mine with a radiant smile. She had just found out she was expecting two girls. She was so happy, but she had not told her mother about the twins. Cora still believed that Regina was pregnant with just one baby.

"Regina, what do you think the baby will be? A boy or a girl?" Cora asked.

"I don't know, mother. I honestly don't know." She smiled a little.

Regina knew her mother was changing, she was changing for her and Regina could not help but feel loved. She had come to an agreement with Leroy. He was so accustomed to her presence that he did not even bother anymore. He was with them in the first visits, but then, he realized that it had no need anymore. He did not need to stay in the middle of their relationship. Of what he knew, Cora would be dead as soon as Emma had full control over her powers and Regina gave birth to her babies.

He never told any of them about the visits and Regina could not help but feel so grateful. Although she believed that her mother had changed, something in her heart insisted that she didn't tell her mother about the twins, and she didn't. This was one of the only secrets that Regina was keeping from her mother.

"Yesterday was Snow's birthday party." Regina said.

"Really? And what did they do? Did they talk with animals in the Forest?" Cora grimaced at the thought.

"No, Mother." Regina replied quickly. "They had a party... a very beautiful party."

"And how do you know?"

"Because I was there."

Cora's eyes widened.

"You were at Snow's birthday party? Regina, this is so-"

"I was invited." She interrupted.

"By whom?"

"By Snow."

"What?" Cora almost cried. "What is that woman planning now?"

"She's not planning anything, mother. She... I... I think we've fought for so long. Maybe it's time to end this fight."

Time passed so fast. Regina was falling for the damn bug, but that was another matter that she didn't have the courage to tell her mother, not yet. She was getting fatter. That, at least, was her thought.

"Regina, what did you do last week?" Cora asked, looking at her daughter's belly. "You're huge." She said with a smile that soon left her face when she realized the face that her daughter had.

"I'm so fat," Regina said with tears in her eyes, Cora would have fallen about laughing if she didn't know that Regina was indeed feeling that way.

"You're not fat, my love, you are pregnant and beautiful."

And the days when Regina was angry also came. She had found Claire at Archie's office and she was furious. She could barely sleep at night, turning over in bed. At dawn she appeared in the mine, as always, with eyes that showed her weariness and obvious failed attempt to rest.

They were sitting on the floor holding hands. They had grown so close lately. Cora was tired, but she could see in her daughter's eyes that she was much more tired. They were just quiet, listening to the sound of the wind that made its way into the mine. Tiredness overwhelmed Regina even before Cora could realize. When she looked at Regina, she saw her daughter sleeping, one hand holding hers and the other around the rounded belly. Suddenly, she noticed small waves forming in Regina's belly. She placed one of her hands and waited, and then a smile appeared on her lips.

And then she was gone. It was difficult to count the time in this mine, but Cora knew it had been a long time since Regina had come to visit her. Something was wrong.

"They must be looking for you..." Cora said looking at her daughter.

"I know... but I don't wanna go with them..."

"But you can't stay here, it's not a good place for you to be. I don't want you to take any risks."

"But I-"

"Regina, you know I love you, don't you?" Cora said, but she saw her daughter falter. She smiled sadly at her daughter. "I know, baby... I know you don't remember some things now, but you can trust me, I'm your mother."

Regina melted at her mother's words. She felt safe and loved. She also felt that way with Archie, and even with the boy claiming to be her son and the people who were surrounding her, but they lied to her. They were lying all the time. She collapsed her mother's arms. The bars of the cell were the only thing that separated them.

"My head hurts." Regina whispered.

"What happened, Regina? Why are you hurt?" Cora asked worriedly.

"I don't know... I just woke up in that car and they... they hurt me. They were shouting and begging me to give them my magic, but I swear, mother, I didn't have magic." Regina cried.

"Oh, baby..." Cora tightened her hold in Regina.

"They didn't care about my girls... they were going to hurt them."

Cora shuddered at the sound of Regina's words. Had she understood right? Girls? In the plural?

"Your girls? What does that mean, Regina?" Cora asked and pulled back a little, just enough to look at her daughter's eyes.

The smile that flooded Regina's face left Cora scared. The woman dropped her hand to her belly, rubbing it as she looked down with nothing but happiness. She was still getting used to the idea of having two girls growing inside her. She was so lost and happy that she didn't notice the look on her mother's face.

Regina didn't have to answer to understand what it meant.

"My little girls here." She said looking down. "My twins." Suddenly she looked at her mother and asked a little scared. "You didn't know, did you?"

"No... I didn't..." Cora was at a loss for words. Regina always hinted that she was pregnant with just one baby and she did not know its gender because she wanted a surprise. "I though you wanted to surprise me." She said with a reassuring smile.

"Where is she?" Archie said when he appeared near the entrance of the mine with a huge group following him closely.

"She's in there." The dwarf replied pointing to the mine.

"I'm going after her." Archie said and started running toward the mine entrance.

All of them were so distracted and worried that they didn't notice the couple stopped at the entrance of the mine. A pair of guns pointed at the group.

So they let their eyes fall on the couple, the anger grew within them. Emma had told everything to her parents and to Archie. They knew very well what Greg had done to Regina and they were angry.

"What are you doing here?" Emma growled at them.

At this point, David had his gun in hand, pointing it directly to the couple. Neal was watching the scene, but he still didn't know if he could believe what he was seeing. That was his fiancée. Archie was desperate to get to Regina and get her out of that damn mine. Snow also had a gun pointed at both in the mine entrance, the gun that Emma had given her. And there was Emma, she was glaring. She was angry. She had seen Regina's state when she had been found. Those two don't have the slightest care with her. The training that Regina had given her was running wildly through her mind. She was ready to attack them at any time.

"Please leave her alone..." Archie began, taking a few steps toward the couple, but he was prevented by the woman's crying.

"Don't approach... you don't know what we're capable of." Tamara shouted angrily.

"Please... Please don't hurt her, she's pregnant."

"I don't want to hurt her, I just want her magic. But we can make a trade, what do you think?"

"What are you talking about?" Emma asked angrily.

"I just want the baby. The baby and you can have her."

"ARE YOU CRAZY?" Emma and Archie yelled at the same time when the thought of the girls in the hands of these monsters crossed their minds.

They were all stuck in this moment of tension. Emma, Neal, Grumpy, Snow, Archie, Tamara, Greg and David.

David, realizing that the conflict would not come to an end until they had Regina protected from these monsters, took advantage of the heated discussion to enter the mine without anyone seeing him.
