The Codeless

A spectre materialised in the park. The eye of Xana flickered in its eyes as it looked around before running off.

Odd's phone rang. "Yeah?"

"A tower has been activated in the Mountain Sector. Xana's just launched an attack," warned Jeremy. "Meet us at the lab quickly. I've just virtualised Aelita and Ulrich, they're already on Lyoko. Go on, hurry Odd, and watch out for spectres."

"Ok, mother Einstein."

Sissi caught up to him. "Attack?"

"Yep."

They skidded to a halt as the spectre confronted them. They turned and ran.

"Jeremy, I'm the spectre's target," Odd yelled into the phone. "Or Sissi. He's chasing us! Tell them to hurry and deactivate the tower as soon as possible!"

Lyoko

"Got it Jeremy. We're on our way." Ulrich sped up.

"I really hate it when there are attacks early in the morning," muttered Aelita.

"We'll be there soon!"

Park

"Jeremy, the spectre, it's a strong, beefy guy!" said Odd into his phone.

"Run! And don't touch it, Odd, it'll steal your codes if it touches you!"

Sissi stumbled and the spectre grabbed her arm for a few seconds before letting her go. Sissi rubbed her arm as it continued after Odd, no longer interested in her.

Lyoko

"Ulrich, Aelita, I've detected something moving straight in front of you."

"You're right, there are three Krabes here." Ulrich slowed the Overbike to a halt as the monsters fired at the two. "I'll handle the crustaceans while you take care of the tower, ok?"

Aelita jumped off and flew towards the tower before hiding behind a rock.

"Hey, you invertebrates! Over here!" the Krabes chased Ulrich, leaving Aelita with a path to the tower.

Park

Odd continued to run as Jim did some exercises.

"Jim…"

"Della Robbia. Breathe, my boy," advised Jim as Odd panted.

"The guy back there, he's so strong! You need to add him to the sport team," suggested Odd as he recovered.

"Oh, thank you, Della Robbia. Good initiative. And you, you're new here. You know, at Kadic, we have a great sports club!" called Jim as the spectre ran past. "Wow, he really does run fast. He absolutely must come and train with us!"

Lyoko

"Come on! Over here!" Ulrich led the Krabes down a path as they fired at him. Ulrich jumped off a ledge and deflected one of the shots back at the Krabes, hitting one and destroying it.

Park

"Jeremy, I lost him. So, who's the smarted one?" asked Odd as he looked around to see no sign of the spectre. "But I lost Sissi. I hope she's alright."

The spectre phased out of a tree and grabbed Odd, causing him to drop his phone.

"Odd?"

"Help! Help!"

"Odd!"

"Odd!" Harry sent an energy field at the spectre but it kept on holding Odd.

Lyoko

"Ulrich, Aelita, I just lost contact with Odd."

"I'm almost there," said Aelita as she landed next to the tower. A Krabe came around the corner and shot her.

"Watch out Aelita!"

Ulrich drove the Overbike over the edge and jumped off it as it slammed into the Krabe, destroying the monster.

"Thanks Ulrich."

"You're welcome." Ulrich helped Aeltia up.

"I'm about to enter the tower Jeremy." She approached the tower but stopped. "What?"

"What's going on Aelita?"

"The tower just deactivated itself."

"Odd, do you hear me? What happened?" asked Jeremy into his phone.

"Jeremy, I don't get it. The spectre touched me then exploded just like that," explained Odd. "Harry's here and Sissi just caught up."

Harry's and Jeremy's dorm

Odd and Sissi connected the wires up.

"So, did we lose many codes?" asked Odd.

"Uh, you've lost all of them. Both of you."

"What?" asked Odd as the display changed to show Xana's power. "And Xana's reached 85%? Oh, what a nightmare…"

"So, that's why Xana stopped his attack," said Aelita as she glanced at Odd. "The spectre had taken all of your codes."

"It gets worse," added Jeremy. "Without the codes, you won't be able to deactivate towers."

"Ok, so I was caught like a rookie, had all my codes stolen and I can't do anything against Xana anymore. I'm a nothing…a big, fat nothing," moaned Odd. "I suck."

"And if only I hadn't tripped," muttered Sissi.

"Hey, it's going to be alright," said Harry as he hugged Sissi. "You'll see."

Odd left the room in a mood.

Later

"Any news about Odd?" asked Yumi as they ate lunch.

"No, he just vanished. I'm a bit worried about him," admitted Jeremy.

"So you couldn't watch your own roommate?" asked William with a snort.

"Do you think you could have done any better?" asked Ulrich. Yumi pulled out her phone as it beeped.

"That's him. 'Urgent. Meet me in the gym.' Let's go."

"What does he want?" muttered Harry as they started to move.

Gym

The group walked into the gym.

"Odd? Are you here?"

"And what if this is another of Xana's attacks?" asked Aelita. "He's hacked our phones before."

"Nope, not Xana." Harry shook his head. "That was Odd. Or at least his phone."

He jumped out of the way as a net fell on them. Odd sarcastically clapped as they pulled it off them.

"Ah bravo, very well done!"

"Odd, what's all this?" asked William.

"All this is a small experience to show you that you're easy prey and that the codeless must protect the people with codes."

"Hey, I'm not easy prey," complained Harry from where he had stopped before glancing at William. "And I think you chose the wrong words."

"Yeah, well, you're super-fast."

"What do you mean the codeless?" asked Ulrich.

"The codeless means Luna, Sissi, Jeremy and I," explained Odd. "The others are the codeful, meaning the ones that still have some codes left: Ulrich, Aelita, Yumi, Harry and William. You'll be Xana's next targets. Ok, come with me. I've got a surprise that I want to show you."

"No thanks, I'm done with your surprises." William walked off, causing Harry to sigh.

"I think you hit a nerve Odd."

"Follow me." Odd led them to a cupboard. "Voilà. The bunker. It's got food and everything you need to survive."

"Looks great but what is it for?" asked Yumi.

"Elementary. Of Xana attacks, the codeful that are not on Lyoko can hide here, under the protection of a codeless," explained Odd.

"Uh, Odd, the spectres can walk through walls. What happens if that happens? We'll be trapped," pointed out Sissi. Jeremy's phone beeped.

"It can't be, another tower has been activated on Lyoko," moaned Jeremy.

"Me and Ulrich can't go back yet," said Aelita.

"It looks like you'll need to stay here in the bunker, under our protection," said a pleased Odd.

"Jeremy, I'll get William and we'll meet you at the bunker," said Yumi as she walked out the gym.

"I'm so awesome," said Odd as he pushed Ulrich and Aelita into the room and shut the door.

Yumi

The girl sat down next to William. "Xana's launched another attack."

William shook his head slightly. "Look, I know you won't enjoy working with me but there aren't many options. You could always work with Harry; you two are a good team. I suggest a truce, just for the time to get to the tower and deactivate it. Ok?"

William remained motionless for a second before shaking the offered hand. "Ok."

Gym

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" asked Ulrich as Sissi and Luna helped Odd move equipment in front of the door.

"Well, it never hurts to try," said Luna.

"Don't worry! Just close the door and we'll take care of the rest!" Odd called enthusiastically. "Simple as that."

Lab

"Are you ready?" asked Jeremy as the two stepped into the scanners. He started the transfer as Harry watched.

Lyoko

"Yumi, I'm sending you the Overwing." The vehicle appeared as William moved a short distance away. "I'll give you the tower coordinates in a few seconds."

"You know, it's not easy to understand you William," said Yumi as they waited. "One moment, you're trying to prove that you belong and the next you send us packing. Why? Is it because of me?"

William just looked at her.

"Alright, got them," said Jeremy before William had chance to respond. "Go west though the dunes."

Yumi flew off, sending dust over William who turned to smoke and followed her. Jeremy's phone rang.

"Odd, what is it?"

"Could you do a facial reconstruction of the spectre please."

Jeremy worked for a few seconds. "Got it. He's around sixteen, brown, short hair and pretty athletic."

"Oh no, it's the same tough guy from this morning," moaned Odd. "I don't believe this."

"Why did you stop?" asked William in annoyance as he reformed.

"I needed to check our course. Moreover, I don't like this place. It's too quiet."

"Are you kidding me?" asked William as they looked around. "There aren't any monsters for a thousand miles."

Kankrelats fired at them.

"I just had to open my big mouth!"

Yumi's fans hit two of the monsters as William dissolved into smoke and hit one. He sliced another and threw his sword at other, just missing Yumi.

"You know what? This is really too easy." William pulled his sword out og the rock and noticed the Krabes. "We need to take cover!"

"Ok, here we go!" William leapt off the edge and Yumi pulled him onto the Overwing as the Krabes approached then hid behind a rock. "No, they won't leave us alone!"

"We just need to be smarter than them."

Kadic

Ulrich paced. "Are you really sure that this is going to work? Because your spectre looks kind of tough."

"Rubbish! The situation is under control." The spectre walked into the gym and stared at Odd. "No trespassing pal."

Odd ran at the spectre only for it to move past him.

"Oh no!"

"Stupify!"

The spectre ducked causing the spell hit the wall and walked through the door.

"Odd, do something, quick."

"Wingardium Leviosa!" Luna moved the equipment out of the way and Odd ran in before jumping on the spectre. Ulrich and Aelita ran out. The spectre followed them, dragging Odd along the floor. Eventually, Odd let go and pulled out his phone as Sissi and Luna chased the spectre.

"Odd?"

"Jeremy, the spectre is a wall crosser!"

"What?"

"He walked through the wall and he's now running after Ulrich and Aelita."

"William, Yumi, Odd's plan didn't work out. You need to quickly deactivate the tower," said Jeremy to the two on Lyoko as he ended the call. William peered out from behind the rock.

"It was obvious that his plan was lame."

"We should try and set a trap for them," suggested Yum as she peered at the monsters.

"Ok. Since I'm faster, I'll lure them and you will strike them in the back."

"Faster? Are you joking?" William had already dissolved into smoke.

"Ok, what's the problem with the tow of you?" asked Harry. "You're acting weirdly."

Yumi sent her fans flying at the two monsters and hit them. "I hit the bullseye. And you didn't want to taem up."

"Ok, now let's run to the tower."

"I didn't manage to protect them; you understand what that could mean?" asked Odd over the phone.

"Relax Odd, it'll get better. Yumi and William are nearly there," reassured Jeremy.

"Yeah and meanwhile, my bunker and codeless story has kicked the can. I'm just a big loser."

"Come on…"

"Jeremy, there's something strange going on," called Yumi as the two looked at the tower. "It's crazy, there's another William. William? William?"

Xana William stared straight ahead as it stood in front of the tower. William seemed to be in a state of shock.

"Eh? What do you mean?" asked Jeremy in confusion. Harry frowned then stiffened.

"Oh great. Xana's going to try and manipulate William. I'll go over and give Xana a… more tempting target."

"Are you sure?" asked Jeremy. Harry nodded and headed down to the scanners.

Xana William smirked. "Welcome home William."

Yumi walked forward and called out her Bo staff. She attacked and Xana William sent her flying with a punch as it dodged. It considered her for a moment as it passed then continued on to William.

"Be careful Yumi. You just lost fifty life points," warned Jeremy.

"I'm fine."

"It's not fine. Harry's on his way but you have to be more careful."

"I'm glad you and your friend came here. I was getting bored. Now I can have some fun." Xana William circled the real William as it spoke.

"Jeremy, we have a very serious problem here. Tell Harry to hurry," called Yumi to the empty sky.

"Odd, Yumi and William got trapped, they won't be able to deactivate the tower for now. We need to stop the other two from having any more codes stolen!"

"Tell me William. Why didn't you defend your friend?" asked Xana William once it was in front of William. "Yet I sense you have feelings for her."

William glanced at Yumi as she took a position behind him, holding her arm.

"You didn't defend her because you feel betrayed. Deceived. Manipulated. And you know I'm right." Xana William started to circle again as it spoke, smiling knowingly.

Kadic

Aelita and Ulrich ran into the library.

Lyoko

"You're the one left behind. The nice guy, useful for fights but who gets rejected or ignored when he's no longer needed. The one who is not truly accepted."

"William, stop listening to him," begged Yumi. "He's trying to trick you. You need to resist. You're stronger than him. I know you are."

"Here you're a king. Nothing can hurt you. Especially not a girl like her." Yumi placed her hand on William's shoulder only for William to knock it off. Xana William smirked evilly as both he and William turned to look at her.

KAdci

The spectre ran into the library as Aelita and Ulrich watched it. Odd arrived and Jim pulled him away.

"Odd, come here. I need to speak to you."

Lyoko

"William, I beg you. I have to get to the tower and deactivate it. Aelita and Ulrich need us," begged Yumi as William followed Xana William to the tower.

"Keep quiet." William summoned his sword and pointed it at her.

"William, don't do that."

"It's fine William. Go ahead. She won't be able to hurt you if she's far away." Xana William's voice was soft, almost comforting if it wasn't for the undertones.

"Don't listen to him. He's only interested in our codes. He doesn't care about you apart from being a means to the end." Yumi backed away as the two advanced before running.

"See? She's abandoning you once again." Xana William chuckled.

Kadic

"And you don't know what class he's in?" asked Jim. Odd shook his head. "This is incredible! A genius sprinter in Kadic and I'm the last to know! If I could at least have his name…"

Odd ran after the spectre as he saw it chasing Ulrich and Aelita.

"May I remind all students that running in the corridors is forbidden!" said Jim over the speakers. "If you really want to run, please join the athletics team. I'm waiting for you."

"Eh?" Odd stared at the frozen spectre and poked its hand. It unfroze and pushed him over. Odd pulled out his phone.

"Odd?"

"Jeremy, the weakness, I found it, the spectre freezes when the speakers are being used," explained Odd.

"Of course, I should've thought of that! The electromagnetic waves modify its molecular structure."

"Uh yeah… Thanks, Einstein. So what should I do?" asked a confused Odd.

"Uh, it should work if you freeze him for longer."

Lyoko

"Yumi? Do you hear me? Yumi?"

"Yes, I hear you. But William, the real William, is after me." Yumi navigated the rocks only to run into William. "No William! Please!"

"William, listen to me. If you do that, Xana will win. And we lose everything. I don't think Harry will fight you. Do you hear me?"

"It's time to finish this my friend." Xana William reformed and stared at William.

Yumi ran and they split. No one noticed the small puffs of sand coming up with no cause.

Kadic

Ulrich and Aelita ran around a corner only to find a dead end.

"We're cornered."

The spectre rounded the corner only to be jumped on by Luna who was immediately thrown off. The eye of Xana flashed in its eyes.

"Are you sleeping, are you sleeping, Brother John? Brother John?" Odd's voice came over the speakers. "Morning bells are ringing, morning bells are ringing, ding dang dong. Ding dang dong. Are you sleeping, are you sleeping, brother John? Brother John? Morning bells are ringing, morning bells are ringing. Ding dang dong, ding dang dong."

The spectre froze up and the two stared at it in disbelief.

Lyoko

"You're part of the team William. Whether you like it or not, we're one," said Jeremy. Yumi paused as she gasped for breath. Xana William advanced on her with a menacing look. She ran only to be trapped by him and the real William. "I know it's hard but you've never let us down. Please think about it. You're our friend. My friend."

"It's time to choose your side. Set the real William free." William closed his eyes then started as he felt a hand on his shoulder. There was nothing there then Harry released his invisibility.

"Harry…" Xana William stared at him.

"Hey William. How're you doing?" William tried to get Harry to release his shoulder but Harry just raised an eyebrow. "You don't want to do that. I know what you're thinking. That it's too hard to struggle."

"How? How could you know?"

"I've been in this situation before. It's hard to think about anything else than what Xana says."

"Look at you. You've grown weak Harry. The old Harry would have gone straight for me, not tried to talk to someone." Xana William laughed.

"No, I think I've grown stronger. This isn't my fight. I'm not in the mood for a fight." Harry closed his eyes.

"Whose fight is it then, if not yours?"

"It's William's. William, I know what Xana has been saying and it isn't true. You aren't being deceived or any of that stuff. Not by us. Xana is preying on your doubts. The whispers I know you hear in the dark. The same whispers I hear."

"You don't know me." William shoved Harry who stumbled slightly. Xana William smirked as it pulled Harry into its arms and tightened his grip. Harry winced slightly.

"I think I do. William Dunbar, the rebellious boy who has a stubborn streak. The boy who was willing to take a hit for me even though we had only talked a few times. The boy who clashed with Ulrich for Yumi's affections even though Yumi only has eyes for Ulrich. One of my closest friends. That's all I need to know about you."

William closed his eyes.

"Why do you resist me?" asked Xana William softly into Harry's ear. "Isn't it easier to let me decide your actions?"

"It's the choices we make that define us." Harry looked at William who closed his eyes in thought. "If you chose to join Xana, I won't stop you William. After all, it is your decision. Just think about it. You are and always will be my friend."

"Yet I sense you don't really believe that." Harry jabbed his elbow into the clone's chest and slipped out as the grip loosened.

"I think he's right," said William with a small smile as he gestured towards the clone. "About what he said earlier. I do have to make a choice. It's time to take care of you."

William kicked his clone to the ground. "Harry, take Yumi and run. Run as fast as you can to the tower."

Harry nodded and Yumi climbed on his back.

"Don't breathe a word of this to Ulrich."

"Wasn't planning to." Harry ran as Xana William flipped William over. It pointed his sword at William and shook its head before turning to smoke and following Harry and Yumi. William stood up.

Kadic

"Brother John? Brother John…"

"Della Robbia! This is not sing academy here!" Jim snatched the microphone from Odd.

"No!"

The spectre unfroze and advanced on the two.

"What the heck are you doing?" asked Jim as Odd ran out of the office. "Della Robbia, get back over here!"

He turned the microphone on again.

"Come back here! Come back here right now!"

Aelita and Ulrich used the chance to run past the spectre.

Lyoko

William and his clone clashed as Harry turned to look at them. Yumi climbed off and ran towards the tower. William went for a strike but his clone blocked it using his sword before elbowing him and smirking with a small head shake as it put its foot onto William's back and pressing him down then turned to smoke. It reformed and devirtualised Yumi. William sent an energy wave at it.

"Harry, finish the job."

Harry nodded and entered the tower.

"Della Robbia, this is your last chance! I won't repeat myself!"

The spectre chased after Aelita ad Ulrich only to explode.

"Well, that's over with," said Sissi as she slid down a wall. "Now, how to get Xana to not make us blind every time he sends a spectre."

Later

Yumi caught up to William. "William!"

The boy paused.

"I wanted to say thank you. Without you, and Harry, we would have been goners." William stared at her. "Do you think we make a good team?"

William smiled. "Yeah, we make a good team."

"If I ever get an ego like that clone of yours, please slap me," called Harry as he ran over. "Trust me, I don't want an ego."

They watched and ran over as Odd left the Principal's office.

"So?" asked Aelita.

"Six hours of detention and some community service," said a depressed Odd.

"That's bad," said Ulrich.

"It's a pity that we can't tell anyone that we're saving the world and that you were protecting us," said Sissi with a sigh. "The double life is annoying."

"That bunker idea cost am a lot."

"Maybe but without you, Aelita and Ulrich would have lost all their codes," pointed out Yumi.

"This whole idea of codeless and bunkers was lame," muttered Odd.

"You're right but you did what we always should do, protect the others no matter what," said Aelita.

"Plus, you tried to stop the spectre," commented Harry as he moved his hair out of his eyes. "That's something."

"So, will you help me with my community service?" asked Odd hopefully.

"That depends. What is it?" asked William.

"Cleaning the graffiti off the toilet, helping in the canteen for a week, removing the chewing gum from the physics classrooms, running around the stadium ten times…" Odd noticed that everyone else had left. "Hey, my friends! Come back my friends! Come back!"

"Odd, time for you to do your community service," said Sirius as he grabbed Odds' shirt. Odd moaned. "You can play with your friends later."
