CHAPTER 40 – THE NECKLACE

Regina had to come to City Hall that day for a meeting with the officials of the city. The meeting took all afternoon and was extremely stressful and tiring. Once the meeting ended, Regina went home, took a shower and went to lie down on the bed. She wasn't sleepy, she was just extremely tired.

Archie arrived when it was still early, but Regina wasn't anywhere downstairs. He went upstairs and called her name, but was met with an angry growl coming from the master bedroom. As soon as he entered the room, he found her lying on top of the sheets and her face didn't look nice.

"Are you okay? It's 7pm."

"I'm tired." She complained. "I'm always tired and those city officials did nothing to help me. Everything is tight. The stockings are tight, the shoes are tight. The damn sleeves are making me miserable." She said trying to sit up in bed, but the discomfort was evident.

He smiled at her and walked over to her side of the bed. He took off his watch and laid it on the table beside the bed, then he took off his shoes and sat behind Regina. As soon as he was sitting behind her correctly, Regina approached him, putting her back on his chest.

Archie took a pot of cream that was on the table and filled his hand with it. He had seen Regina putting the cream on her belly so many times that it turned into a routine they had created. Every night Archie would sit behind her and spread the cream on her belly and take advantage massage her aching back.

He lifted her shirt to just below her breasts so he had better access to her belly. He began to spread the cream and massage the swollen belly as he felt Regina relaxing in his arms.

"How was the meeting?"

"Exhausting. I don't understand how they can both take so much time and not find a solution to the problem. I found the solution in half an hour."

He stifled a laugh and continued massaging. By the way Regina's breathing was becoming more regular, he knew she would fall asleep in minutes.

"Where is Henry?" She asked, her voice already sleepy.

"He's spending some time with Emma and Neal, they must be coming back soon."

"Hm..." After a few seconds of silence, she spoke again. "I didn't make dinner. He'll be hungry."

"He's having dinner with them, don't worry, okay?" He said and kissed her cheek.

Her head was resting casually on his shoulders. The massage was relaxing after a stressful day like today, she could spend the rest of the night like that. She wasn't sleepy, she was just tired. That's what she kept repeating to herself. She wouldn't sleep, she would only close her eyes for a second. Just for a second.

"Mom!" The boy went home screaming.

Henry found the house quiet and he made his way to the top floor to Archie and his mom's bedroom.

He knocked on the door, but didn't wait for any answer. He just came into the room by calling Regina with no concern in life. He stopped when he realized Archie motioning him to talk down and Regina asleep in his arms.

"Sorry, Archie." He whispered. "Is Mom okay?" He asked with a spark of concern.

"Yes, Henry. She's just tired."

The boy was just looking at them. Noticing the look of the boy, Archie patted his hand on the bed signaling for Henry to sit with him. The boy smiled and sank into bed careful not to wake his mother.

"How was your day today?" Archie asked.

"Boring." The boy replied with a shrug.

"May I know why?"

But the boy didn't answer. Something in Regina had called his attention.

"What is it?" The boy asked pointing to some red marks on Regina's arm.

"What?" Archie tried to see without waking Regina. When he glanced his eyes to the marks, he remembered how she got it. Claire. "Hm... this... Miss Bennet and your mother were involved in a fight this morning."

"Emma told me. Claire did this to her?" The boy asked.

Archie just nodded.

"You should have seen Miss Bennet. Regina nearly tore her hair." Archie joked. The attempt to relax Henry a little was achieved successfully.

Silence settled between them as Henry put his hand gently on Regina's belly feeling the movements of his little sisters. Something was bothering him and Archie realized this, but did not press the boy. He knew Henry was a bit like Regina in that aspect. They couldn't be pressured to speak, he had to rely on Henry to come around when he was comfortable.

"When... When they arrive will you like them more than me?"

There it was. The little boy that so many people didn't see anymore. Archie wasn't expecting it. Of all the scenarios he had envisioned with Henry, this definitely wasn't one of them.

"Henry." Archie whispered a little exasperated. For a moment he had forgotten that Regina was there and he only had eyes for the boy.

If there was one thing that Archie wanted to do, it was be more than a psychologist to his family. Actually, being a psychologist to them was out of the question. He wanted to be a father, a husband and a friend and that was what he was.

"I mean, it happens..." Henry began a little insecure. "People like babies. Babies are cute."

"This is not the real reason, is it?" Archie raised an eyebrow knowing there was more to the story than Henry was talking about.

Henry looked at Archie and he had the feeling that he had been caught. There were so many things going on in his head at that time and he didn't want to be selfish, but he was worried. He opened his mouth a few times, but closed soon after realizing that the words just wouldn't come out.

"Come on, Henry. What is it?" Archie encouraged.

"They are of you two, for real... I mean... I know that mom loves me... but... but they are of mom, for real, and they are also yours-"

"Henry, this is not true. Regina will never love you less than them and me neither. Although I'm not your father and I haven't raised you as your mom did, you are like my son and I love you the same way I love them. They won't take your place in our hearts... it doesn't matter that they are ours for real, you are also ours. We love you anyway. Regina loves you the same way, she loves you so much." Archie said.

"Really?" The boy asked, still doubtful.

"Really. And, besides, babies can be quite disgusting." Archie said and Henry stared confused. "They have bald little pointy heads. They only know how to eat, sleep, poop and cry." This time, Henry let a chuckle escapes his lips, but then covered his mouth with his hand as not to wake Regina. "You're a lot more fun than that."

"Am I?"

"Of course you are." And, at that moment, he approached Henry the maximum possible and passed his arms around his neck, pulling him closer and whispered so that Regina couldn't hear what he was about to say. "And besides, we are going to be the only dudes in the house." He said in a serious and conspirator tone. "We need to stick together, right?" As he spoke, Henry looked at him with a serious look. "Our survival depends on it."

Archie ended with a tone much lower than normal, after that Henry fell into a new laugh, this time much lower. Archie knew Henry was a smart kid and even with the jokes, he knew that Henry understood what he meant. The smile on the boy's face showed it clearly.

Regina closed her eyes for just a second. A second ago she was in the comfort of Archie's arms and the next second she was in front of the stable where her life had changed for good. The place where she fell in love the first time and where she lost her love. Twice.

The smell was familiar and she knew she was no longer in Storybrooke, she was at home, her former house in the Enchanted Forest.

She looked down and wasn't surprised by what she found. She was pregnant, but she was wearing a typical dress of the Enchanted Forest. She was confused, she remembered everything, she remembered who she was, who she had become and that she had a family now. Archie, Henry and her two little girls that were to come.

Her confusion was interrupted by the noise of horses in the stable and she decided to enter. She wasn't prepared for who she met. Her father, her beloved father was stroking the head of one of the horses. He had his back to her, but she would recognize his shape anywhere. She didn't know what to do or what to say, her vision was blurred by the tears that were now filling her eyes.

"Dad." She called in a choked voice.

At the sound of his daughter's voice, Henry turned and the smile that appeared on his face only made Regina's heart get tighter. Longing, regret and love was all she felt now.

"My little girl." He whispered and ran to her and wrapped her in a tight hug.

She couldn't explain how much she missed those hugs, that voice and that smell. In fact she had hidden it in her mind so deeply that she had almost forgotten, but now... now she thinks she can't live without him.

"Forgive me, Dad." She asked, while she still wept openly in his arms. "I can never forgive myself for what I did to you, forgive me, please."

"No, baby. You don't need to apologize." He said and walked away from her so she could look at her eyes. "Look at you, you're happy. You look beautiful!" He said with a huge smile.

"No, Dad. I killed you." She whispered and began to cry again.

"You did what needed to be done, please don't cry anymore."

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Daddy."

"You look so beautiful. I would die a million times if need be to see you like this." He said looking at her again.

"Don't say that."

"I love you so much, my little girl. Now tell me, a boy or a girl?" He asked as he put one of his hands on the side of Regina's belly.

A genuine smile graced her face as she looked at him. She took her other hand and led it to the other side of her belly.

"Two girls." She whispered with eyes full of joy and pride.

"Two Girls? I'll be grandpa of two little girls?" He asked with joy and she just nodded. "Come here." He said and pulled her into another hug.

A few seconds passed and a heavy rain began to fall out of the stables. That's when Henry's eyes widened a little and walked away from Regina.

"You must go, my love." He spoke softly.

"What?" She widened her eyes, she didn't want to leave. She didn't want to leave him here. She needed him. "No, Dad. I'm not leaving."

"You need to, baby. But I want to show you something first."

"No." She started to shake her head frantically. "No, Dad. Come with me."

"You know I can't."

"Please?" At the sound of these words, Henry couldn't help remembering his girl, his sweet little girl.

"Sorry, my love. You know I would if I could, but I can't. Now let me show you something."

Then he took a necklace from his pocket and showed it to Regina. The necklace had a stone that shone an intense and very beautiful light purple. It was beautiful and weird at the same time because Regina knew that feeling. It was magical. Although she didn't have magic anymore, she knew that feeling. It was her magic.

"What is-"

"You know what this is?" He asked carefully.

"My magic." She whispered. "What's happening?"

"It's stuck."

"But how? Is that why I can't use it anymore?"

"Yes."

"But how did it get there? Who took it?"

"You know who." He replied and gave her one last hug before turning and running toward the rain. "Try to remember." He yelled before disappearing into the rain falling outside the stables.

"No, Dad. Wait for me. Who took it? Who took my magic?" She ran toward him, but he was no longer there. She was alone again.

"Who took it? Who took my magic?"

Regina opens her eyes and finds her precious son's face hovering over her, he's looking at her with a little concern.

"Who took your magic?" Archie whispers in her ear.

"What?" She asks confused.

"You were asking who took your magic. You think someone stole it from you?"

"Where is it?" She asked looking around, still surprised by the dream. Fortunately, the sound of thunder and rain falling outside the stables where she was had completely disappeared.

"What?" Archie asked.

"What were you dreaming?" Henry asked curiously.

Regina tried to remember, but for some reason the dream was quickly becoming a blur.

"I was with my father. We were... were in the stables." She frowns. "He showed me a necklace."

Archie was holding her and paying attention to her words, while Henry was almost hovering over Regina.

"What about the necklace?" Archie asks.

"I don't... I don't remember... there was something on the necklace."

"Something to do with your magic?" Archie asks again.

"I think so." She frowned again. "But I don't remember what."

"It's okay, mom. Four of us are here to protect you." Henry said with eyes full of pride and love.

The next morning, Emma was in Granny's waiting for Henry to have breakfast together. At the appointed time, he appeared at the door followed by Regina who was walking behind a little slower. The boy ran and threw himself into her arms.

"Hi, Ma." He said cheerfully.

"Hey, kid. Why all this excitement?" Emma asked hugging her son and looking at Regina that had been dragging all the way to the table where they were.

"Mom said I can go to her next appointment." He had a huge smile on his face.

"This is great, you will see what they are doing in there." Emma said with a smile.

"No need to go to the doctor to know what they are doing. They insist on kicking me." Regina says annoyed while massaging a particularly sore on her side. "I don't know if I can stand it for another two months."

"They aren't to blame, Regina. You are insufferably stubborn, what did you expect?" Emma spoke and won an annoyed look from Regina, but the irritation doesn't last long as Emma burst into laughter along with Henry. She really knew how to annoy Regina.

Regina rolled her eyes. That is why Emma and Henry got along so well. Emma was a child, so childish as any naughty child of six years.

Ignoring Regina, she continued talking. "When I was waiting for Henry, he made me really miserable. I spent the first four months sitting in front of the toilet. Then he just wouldn't stop kicking me, he was starting to hurt me. When the doctor came to see me, he would just stand there quiet. Sometimes he was sucking his finger or just sleeping." Emma laughed at the memory. "The doctor thought I was lying or planning something. It was just when he would go away that Henry began again. It seemed like it would never end."

Emma was torn from her memories by an angry growl from Regina.

"I need to go to the bathroom." She said. "Again."

Once she was out of sight, both Henry and Emma burst into laughter. Two children. Then suddenly, Henry's eyes widened and Emma turned to see what he was seeing. Claire was at the counter making her request.

"Oh, it won't be pretty." Henry whispered.

"You have no idea." Emma whispered back. "Why do they hate each other so much?"

"I have no idea."

"Who was she in the Enchanted Forest?" Emma asked.

Henry frowned.

"I don't know yet. I thought she was Ariel-"

"Ariel? Like in Ariel, the Little Mermaid?" Emma asks with wide eyes, full of surprise and, if well observed, full of excitement. "I loved that fairytale."

"Yes, but I'm not so sure."

"Why not?"

"Because if she is Ariel, where is her prince? And if she came here, other people should also be here, like Ursula, for example, or Triton."

Emma's eyes widened in shock. "What if Regina is Ursula?"

"What?" Emma and Henry were caught off guard by Regina's voice, which was looking at her angrier than before. "You think I'm Ursula? That disgusting witch?"

"No!" Emma was quick to try to fix. "I didn't say that, I just... I was just-"

"No, she's worse than Ursula." A voice interrupted the imminent fight.

Regina just now noticed Claire's presence. Regina looked at her with eyes full of anger, but Claire didn't flinch.

"What did you just say?" Regina asked approaching Claire until they were inches away from each other.

"I said you're worse than Ursula." Claire repeated slowly. The fire present in the eyes of the two women only showed that between them they had more history than they could imagine.

Emma, sensing the tension created between them, quickly stood up and stepped between the two women. Her heart was beating fast. After the scene she had seen yesterday, she certainly wouldn't let the two continue this "conversation".

"Ok. You are definitely not continuing this conversation." Emma said seriously.

Did Emma have a thought that a part of the two women would listen to her? If she thought so, she was very much mistaken.

"You idiot, you have to be kidding me, right?" Regina growled. She had heard Emma talking, but the truth is that she didn't care.

"You bet I'm serious about it." Claire challenged.

"So I should just bring her back here."

Emma noticed Claire's look. Definitely she saw fear, but as fast as it had appeared, it was gone and a small smile appeared on Claire's lips.

"And how would you do that? With your helpless magic?"

Regina stared and her mouth dropped in surprise. It was as if she had been slapped in the face. While not wanting to admit she missed her magic, she missed the feeling of protection that her magic gave her.

Realizing the effect that her words had caused in Regina, Claire grinned. She turned and left the restaurant. When Emma turned to Regina, she found her still with her mouth open, speechless.

"Regina-" Emma tried to get her attention and maybe apologize for thinking she was Ursula, but Regina didn't leave.

"No, Miss Swan. I don't want to know." Regina said, taking the bag that was next to Henry and preparing to leave.

"I didn't say you were Ursula." Emma tried.

"Of course not, because I'm the Evil Queen, huh?"

"No... I just... I just wanted to know why you hate each other so much, it can't be just because of Archie."

"This clearly doesn't concern you." She said angrily.

"Mom?" Henry tried to get Regina's attention who was pretty damn angry. She looked at him and relaxed a bit, but Emma knew how to take anyone serious, especially Regina.

"Come on, Regina. I just want to know who she was in the Enchanted Forest."

Regina growled at her. She definitely knew how to scare a person with just a look. Emma felt herself shiver, she could still be impressed with how Regina could do this. Her eyes were a roller coaster of emotions, Regina could scare people by the amount of emotion that her eyes could show, from love to hate.

She decided to ignore the annoying blonde and turned to her son who had watched the whole scene silently. Nobody knew, but Henry's head was working fiercely, he was making connections and connecting the dots.

"Henry, you'll call me after you leave school?"

The boy simply nodded, not wanting to push his mother. Regina smiled at him and started walking toward the exit.

"Oh, c'mon, Regina. What would it cost you to mention who she is?" Emma tried again. She was like a child, if Regina wasn't going to speak for good she would speak for bad.

Regina had reached her limit for the day. She was so done with Emma.

"SHE IS ARIEL, YOU IDIOT!" Regina shouted impatiently and irritatedly and left the restaurant without looking back.

Everyone looked at her. Ruby was behind the counter trying to laugh quietly. She knew Emma and she knew this doubt was hovering in the blonde's head for some time. Ruby knew Claire was Ariel, the real question is: who didn't? But she wanted to see Emma pestering Regina to find out. She knew that Emma wouldn't settle down.

"Yeah!" Henry shouted cheerfully from his place, as he threw up his hands smiling brightly.

Emma turned to the boy frowning in confusion at his sudden burst. She was still a little shocked by Regina's response, but the joy in the boy's face made her more curious.

"What?" Emma said shrugging.

"I knew it! She is the little mermaid!"

Emma didn't know what to say or how to act. The little mermaid was simply Emma's favorite fairytale. She loved that story. Now that she had discovered that Ariel was real and she was right here, at her fingertips, Emma just needed one more thing before leaving the history aside. She needed to find out what the story was between Claire -or better- Ariel and Regina.

A huge smile graced Emma's face. She was definitely going to discover it.

So, what you think? I know, Ariel, right? I know that don't surprise you, but I SWEAR I have her in my mind for almost 5 or 6 months ago. Sorry if I desappoint you :/ Please, let me know what you think!

C'mon, Emma can be really annoying when she wants to. And she wants to know what happened between Ariel/Claire and Regina, so she is going to discover that!

See you in the next! Kisses ;***
