Obstinacy
Aelita walked down a corridor and stopped when she saw a person, recognition in her eyes.
"Aelita?"
"Mum?"
"Aelita…."
"Mum?"
"Aelita." Anthea walked into a room.
"Mum!" Aelita ran after her as fast as she could. No matter how close she got, however, her mum moved further away whenever she turned a corner.
"Aelita!"
Aelita woke up before slumping against the bed. She went to the bathroom and ran water over her hands before staring in the mirror and walking back to Harry's and Jeremy's dorm. Pushing on the door, she closed it again as she saw Jeremy and Laura working together, Harry fast asleep. Laura smiled as Jeremy took off his headphones.
"Didn't somebody knock?"
"No."
Jeremy put his headphones back on as Aelita walked sadly away. Laura pressed Harry's hand to her tablet and looked put out when nothing happened.
"Why won't it work?" shew muttered to herself. "He confirmed he could do it but why won't it work?"
The next morning
"I didn't abandon him. I just left him with my sisters," explained Odd as Yumi walked over.
"What are you talking about?"
"Kiwi, his dog," explained William.
"I had wondered where that dumb mutt of yours had gotten to," said Sissi. "Not that I'm missing him."
"He's not a dumb mutt!"
"Aelita, are you with us?" asked Yumi as she saw Aelita's distant look.
"Well, I had some bad dreams last night."
"Why didn't you tell me?" asked Jeremy.
"You've been so busy lately," explained Aelita. "Especially with the virus."
"Or, you got put off when you saw Laura in our room," said Harry with a glance at Aelita. "You didn't want to talk about them in front of her. Did I mention that she's been trying to get me to hack into things?"
Laura glared at him, causing him to laugh. "Did you think that I wasn't paying attention?"
"Speaking of the virus, Laura and I finished it this morning," said Jeremy. "We should be able to inject it into the Cortex within a week. Then bye bye Xana!"
"But why wait a week?" asked Aelita. "Let's do it today."
"We also designed an anti-detection system so that way Tyron wouldn't notice us," explained Laura.
"We should test it before we use it."
"But Aelita does have a point that we should destroy Xana as soon as possible," said Harry with a stretch.
"Even if Tyron notices us, so what?" asked Aelita.
"Yeah, by the time he realises, the job would be done already," added Ulrich.
"I'm tired of the double life," continued Sissi. "I'd rather be a normal school girl."
"Alright, we'll do it tonight then, after classes," decided Jeremy. Laura folded her arms as everyone started to eat.
Class
Jim paced at the front of the class. "As I already told you, the high jump is a noble sport that requires concentration, precision and… legs. Contrary to what some people think, this sport is just as valuable as the long jump. And, just like it, it will take you very far and high."
Harry snorted but turned it into a sneeze as Jim looked at him.
"I'm not sure fat Jim would jump very high," whispered Odd. Ulrich smirked slightly.
"Stern! Instead of chatting with your friends, please show us your skills."
Ulrich reluctantly walked over before running, jumping over the wire and rolling off the mat with a yelp. Jim ran over and pulled him back onto the mat.
"Let's check this out." Ulrich winced as Jim checked his foot. "Well, it's a sprain."
Ulrich sighed in relief.
"Stern, your problem is that you lack concentration and precision way too much."
"Or the mat's too small," said Harry with a sigh. "Really, we should do this outside. On a lot of sand."
"Della Robbia!" called Jim as Odd started to run over. "Help him while I look for a splint."
"How will I go to the Cortex now?" whispered Ulrich as Jim moved away. "On one leg?"
"This sucks," Odd whispered back. "All because of fat Jim. 'High jump…'"
Odd made quotation marks as Harry jogged over after detaching himself from the hands restraining him. Ulrich winced as his leg dropped. "Sorry."
"You had a comment to add, Della Robbia?" asked Jim as he returned. "And what are you doing here Stern?"
"Being worried about my brother."
"Fat Jim will be glad to give you two hours of detention Della Robbia," said Jim after a second. "This evening, after class."
He ripped a page out of his notebook and handed it to Odd who groaned.
Later
"Couldn't you just keep quiet?" asked an annoyed Jeremy. "You know how touchy Jim is!"
"I'm sorry. I made a serious mistake."
"The mission hasn't even started yet and Ulrich and you are already out," continued Jeremy. "Maybe we should just cancel it. What do you think?"
"Hey, I'm not out," said Harry with a shrug.
"No way." Aelita shook her head. "We've done missions with less people, we can continue. I'll do it alone if necessary. I want to finish this as soon as possible."
"Aelita, you do know that Tyron's supercomputer is the only way I can keep in contact with your mum" Harry shivered a little at Aelita's glare. "Ok, ok."
"Let's try it," said Yumi. "And if it doesn't work, we'll just do it another time."
"Alright."
"Let me see." Luna started to rub a paste over Ulrich's ankle. "Sorry, I'm going to sit this one out. I could use a little help."
"I'll help," volunteered Sissi.
"Ok, there's four of us then," said Harry with a sigh.
Lab
"Be careful," Jeremy called as he and Laura entered the lab. The four continued down and entered the scanners.
Lyoko
"Ready to go Jeremy," called Aelita as they landed on their feet.
"Ok, head to the elevator."
Harry, Yumi and William shared a look before following the pink haired girl to the garage.
"You know, it may be the last time we'll use the Skid," commented William as they arrived. "I was starting to get used to it."
"I wouldn't be so sure," replied Yumi. "Xana isn't destroyed yet."
They walked onto the pads as Aelita stared at the Skid.
"Hey, captain! It's time to embark," called Yumi. They walked onto the pads as Jeremy transferred them. Aelita piloted them out of the garage and into the digital sea.
"You know what?" asked William. "I'm really glad I didn't miss this last trip."
"That's if it is our last trip," said Harry.
"So am i. but know, just forget about your optimism and focus on the mission," said Yumi.
"Ok. But you know me, I'm the optimistic type."
"I have noticed."
"Odd and Ulrich must be really mad," said William as A manta passed behind them. "Especially Ulrich."
"We've got company," said Aelita as something beeped.
"I detected some hostile activity around," said Jeremy.
"Oh boy," muttered Harry. "Why was I expecting any different?"
"What? Sharks?" asked Yumi as the sea turned red. She looked behind them at the monsters. "I don't recognise the monsters."
"Mantas!"
"But since when could they swim?" asked Yumi.
"For a while," said Harry with a shrug.
"Why?" asked Laura. "Isn't it normal for them to swim?"
"No, Xana's gained power. Harry's seen them once before though. Aelita, do you think you can reach the Cortex?"
"Not without a fight," replied Aelita. "Yumi, William, get ready. I'll launch the Navskids."
She did just that and the three started to fight the mantas.
"Watch out! Torpedoes incoming," called William as he saw them.
"Last time they shot lasers," moaned Harry as he dodged some.
"These creatures are pretty fast."
"Yeah and pretty hard to hit," agreed Yumi.
"Yumi, behind you!" Harry hit the manta. "Nice one Harry."
"William watch out!"
William grinned as he saw the torpedoes before dogging them. "You missed sweetie."
Aelita hit one of the remaining manta's causing it to spin. Yumi fired and hit it.
"Be careful Aelita. Jeremy might not appreciate you scratching the Skid's paint," called Yumi.
"He won't mind."
"I don't mind about the paint but please be more careful Aelita," pleaded Jeremy.
"A manta is still chasing me and I can't get rid of it," called Yumi as she looked behind her.
"I'm coming!"
"Be careful William, don't hit Yumi," warned Aelita.
"I hope you know what you're doing…"
"Just trust me." William fired and hit the manta. They returned to the Skid as the sea returned to its normal blue colour. "Game over already? I was just starting to have fun."
"I'm sure that you can have more fun when we get to the Cortex," reassured Harry.
"Yeah, keep your strength, you show off," added Yumi. "Oh, and thank you by the way."
William sent her a salute as they arrived at the Cortex.
"Wow, what a fight!" gushed William as they stood on the Cortex. "Jeremy, send the Megapod. I feel awesome today!"
"Watch out!" Harry knocked him out of the way of a laser before shooting the offending Blok. "You need to pay more attention."
"Uh, thinks." William smiled slightly then winced as he started to flak to pieces.
"Ok, there's three of us left," said Yumi nervously as she pulled out her fans. "Should we abort the mission?"
"Uh, no. we'll continue," said Aelita.
"Aelita, you know you have very little chance of reaching the core," said Jeremy.
"Can you send the Megapod please?" asked Aelita.
"Just let her persist," suggested Laura. "Once she gets devirtualised, she'll realise how stubborn she was."
"I don't think so Laura," called Harry. "Aelita can be really stubborn at times."
Once they were ready, Yumi drove them away.
Kadic
Ulrich read a book as Luna checked his foot. "Will you stop doing that Luna? I'm sure it's going to be fine."
"Well, the paste I use needs to be changed every hour."
"And stop complaining," said Sissi. "That's not going to help you."
Odd pushed the door open and dumped his bag on the bed. "Come on. We're going to the factory."
"And what about playing football?" asked Ulrich.
"Don't argue. I'm sure you're dying to know how the mission is going." He picked up the crutches and handed them to Ulrich.
"You'll have to help me walk over there, right?" asked Ulrich.
"I spend my life helping you. I wonder what I could have done with all my free time if I hadn't met you."
"More hours of detention."
Cortex
"Aelita, is everything alright between you and Jeremy?" asked Yumi.
"Yes of course." Aelita looked surprised. "Why?"
"I don't know. I kinda felt some tension. Did you argue recently?"
"No, he's just been very busy. That's why I'm not with him too often. But I can understand. He's under a lot of pressure."
"You can tell me the truth. Do you hold a grudge against him?"
Aelita glanced at Harry who had cotton wool stuffed in his ears. "Yumi, I don't really know my parents. Dad works a lot and my mum was taken away when I was very young. You're my family. But Jeremy is special. He's the one who turned on the supercomputer again. He materialised me back. He always took care of me. He saved my life. Whatever happens, I'll always trust him. Always."
They skidded around a corner as something hit them.
"What's going on?" asked Aelita.
"Monsters," replied Harry. "Always monsters."
"Some Krabes. They're blocking the entrance. Jeremy?" asked Yumi.
"Yes, I see that. Do you feel like engaging them?"
"I'm afraid that we might not have a chance."
"Uh, you do know that I'm still around?" asked Harry. "With me, the chances of survival are pretty much guaranteed."
"Yeah, for you," retorted Yumi.
"It's getting worse…" Jeremy thought for a second. "Ok, I'll bring you back."
"No way!"
"Don't be stubborn Aelita. If you try to go through, you'll end up in the scanners anyway."
"Do you really need three people to inject the virus?" asked William.
"What are you thinking?" asked Laura.
"Have you ever gone bowling?"
"No way!" protested Jeremy,
"It could work," said Yumi.
"Either that or convince your stubborn friend to go back home," said William.
"Ok, I'll try." Yumi drove towards them as the monsters fired. Harry and Aelita watched from the air. "Jeremy, be ready to act quickly, please."
"I'll do my best."
The Megapod hit the Krabes and flipped into the air.
"Devirtualise her!" said William worriedly as the Megapod went all over the place before falling. "Do it!"
Jeremy managed to devirtualise Yumi just in time.
"Strike!"
"Jeremy, we can pass through." The two moved deeper into the core. "We're here."
"Ok, I'll launch the anti-detection program." Yumi joined them. "We'll find out soon if it works."
Aelita touched the terminal. "No alarms. It looks like it worked."
"Good. Be ready, I'll transfer the data." Jeremy glanced back as the four entered. "You're coming at just the right time."
"Don't tell me that Aelita's alone on the Cortex," said Odd. "When I'm not there, things turn out bad."
"Harry's there as well."
"Just go and help if you're so strong," suggested William.
"No time. I'm uploading the data. It's the moment of truth."
Everybody watched as the data transferred.
"Jeremy, we can see Tyron." Aelita backed away as the man appeared on the screen.
"Did you find any files?"
"No, I mean, he's there. On a live stream through dome webcam," explained Aelita.
"She's got a point," said Harry. "He is there."
"Not good, if he realises that the webcam is active, he might notice you," explained Jeremy. "Hurry up and enter the codes."
Aelita did just that as a second person walked over to the terminal. "Mum?"
Everyone looked surprised.
"Mum! It's mum! She's with Tyron!"
"Working for him," said Harry. "I knew that she was in the facility."
"Calm down Aelita. Are you sure it's Anthea and not just someone who looks like her?"
"It's her," said Harry.
"Yeah, I'm sure," agreed Aelita. "She's in the lab with him."
"But I thought that her mother was just living in the compound," said William.
"She doesn't really tell me what she's doing," explained Harry. "Says that she doesn't want to talk."
"What is she doing with Tyron?" asked Odd.
"Working probably," said Harry as he paced. Aelita hugged him.
"I never really believed you when you said that you'd met with her."
"Aelita, I'll stop the data transfer."
Tyron walked over and looked at the screen before cutting the connection. Harry drew a sword.
"Wait, I don't get it," said Laura. "Why can't we inject the virus?"
"Because the supercomputer is the only way to keep contact with her mother," said Yumi. "And figure out what she's doing with Tyron. Jeremy, things have changed. We have another mystery to solve now. We can't destroy the supercomputer right now."
"But we can't delay for too long," said Harry. "Otherwise Tyron would find us. I don't really want to become just an object for deactivating things."
"Yeah, I agree with Yumi," said Ulrich. Jeremy looked at them.
"Aelita, we'll have to stop everything. I interrupted the data transfer and am bringing you back."
"No. No, we need to finish the mission," insisted Aelita.
"You're not in good condition to continue Aelita!" Jeremy glanced at a display. "Oh no! Aelita, get out! Ninjas are coming!"
"No way! Xana has to be eliminated! I still have some time!"
Harry started to slice the ninja apart.
"Aelita! Aelita!" Jeremy sighed. "Aelita look. Things have changed. We can't destroy the supercomputer now. You need to come back."
Everyone looked at each other.
"I'll bring them back now."
A ninja tried to slice Aelita only to stop in surprise as the two disappeared.
Lab
The two walked in, one angrier than the other.
"I had the time to inject the virus! Why did you abort the mission?!"
"We all decided to Aelita. Your mother is still alive," replied Jeremy.
"I know but Xana has 85% of his power!"
"Yes but as long as he doesn't reach 100%, he remains confined in Tyron's supercomputer," reminded Jeremy. "It means that we do have some time left to solve that mystery."
"He has a point," agreed Harry.
"Why do you think that I want…?"
"What you want most is to see your mother again," interrupted Jeremy. "You'd risk your life for that. You did it already. If we destroy the cortex, you'll never see her again. We couldn't let you make such a sacrifice. That's why we made that decision."
Aelita looked doubtful.
"Look, if Xana reaches 95%, we'll launch the virus. Ok?"
"Now we have two good reasons to resist Xana," commented Odd as Jeremy glanced back at them. Aelita smiled slightly.
"So, it's a deal?" She nodded.
"Looks like we still have to have a double life," moaned Sissi. "I'd rather get back as soon as possible. Though I will help you find your mum Aelita."
"We all will," said Harry. "We already know where she is anyway. In a secret facility hidden on a cliff."
