CHAPTER 47 – SAVE HER

First nothing. Darkness and nothing. A strong wave of pain shot through her whole body. A pain so intense it made her scream. The problem is that no sound came from her lips. Her eyes were heavy and as much as she tried, it seemed that no part of her body was responding to the orders that her mind was giving it.

More pain.

It took all her strength to be able to open her eyes. The bright light made her head throb cruelly. As she managed to adapt her eyes to glare around her, her mind began to process the information before her.

It took a while until she was really able to focus on the image ahead of her, but when she did, she saw David running toward a body that was motionless on the ground. Blond hair was visible. Not far away, two other bodies began to move on the ground, but she couldn't identify who those bodies belonged to.

There was silence and the truth was that there was noise too. She knew there was because now they were moving towards her and they seemed to be screaming, but the only sound she could hear was her irregular breathing. In response, a new wave of pain shot through her whole body. She tried to move, move her hands or just her fingers, but no matter how hard she tried, her body simply wouldn't respond. She was paralyzed.

The sound of her own breathing grew louder. Breathing was becoming difficult and worst of all, painful. She blinked and suddenly, Emma was hovering over her. Her mouth was moving and her eyes showed desperation, but Regina just couldn't understand what she was talking about. She couldn't concentrate on her face because the pain she was feeling now was far greater than anything she'd ever felt.

Suddenly, the sounds and noises began to make sense.

"Regina?"

"She's bleeding! We need to take her to the hospital."

"Regina, we'll get you out of here, okay? Hang on, stay with me."

She listened, but she couldn't answer. What was happening? She tried and she tried very hard, but her lips just wouldn't move, the only thing she could do was try to keep breathing, despite the unbearable pain. She felt her face wet with new tears. New?

David and Emma, who hovered over Regina, watched her face wet with new tears. They took a while to recover from the explosion. David was the first one up and the first thing he saw was Emma lying unconscious on the ground. He ran to his precious daughter and to his relief, she was quick to wake up. It was then that they both started looking at the things around them. Neal and Ruby were trying to wake Granny and Mr. Gold was beginning to rise.

Then they saw Regina.

Their eyes widened in horror when they saw the position she was in. She was far from where the explosion happened. She was carelessly lying on the floor. The weight of her entire body was on her belly, because she lay with her face turned to the ground. Her eyes were open, but they weren't sure if she was even looking at them or anywhere else.

They ran up to her, but she didn't seem to understand what they were talking about. She looked confused and distracted. It was like she wasn't even there.

"Stay with me." Emma just said when David turned to her with worried eyes.

"You have to transport yourself to the hospital with her, Emma." He insisted.

"I know, I know... I'll see you there." She said and bent down, putting her hands on Regina and closing her eyes in concentration. Contrary to what everyone expected, nothing happened.

No cloud of smoke, no tingling sensation.

Nothing.

Emma looked at them with wide, shocked eyes. Before anyone could ask a question she closed her eyes again and again, but nothing. She looked at Regina who was looking at her with nothing but fear and pain. Regina had the most expressive eyes that anyone could have. They were full of tears.

"What's happening?" Ruby asked frantically.

"It's not working, I can't feel it." Emma whispered in horror.

"What?! What can't you feel?" David asked.

"My magic is gone." Emma said looking around as if searching for something or someone. "Gold!" She screamed as soon as she found what she was looking for. "Gold, help her. She needs help."

The man came limping more than usual. He looked at Regina and crouched beside her. He moved one of his hands over Regina's body and frowned just a few seconds later. Nothing was happening.

"What the hell?!" He said confused.

"What?" Emma asked with wide eyes. "Can't you transport her? Help her, Gold, heal her."

"What do you think I am?" He asked exasperated. "I'm not any kind of healer-"

"Stop fighting." Granny interrupted them and bent down, placing one of her hands on Regina's face, who was struggling to breathe. "We'll get you out of here, hold on."

"What are you waiting for, papa?" Neal asked.

"Magic... It's gone. I can't feel it anymore." He admitted in amazement.

"What?" They whisper in horror.

"How is that possible?" They heard someone ask, but David didn't allow more questions to be asked.

"No matter what is happening with the magic now. We need to take them to the hospital." He said, already preparing to move and get her off the ground.

"Okay." Neal was the next to speak. "The car is not far from here, let's go fast."

"Where is Snow? She came with us." Granny said looking around in search of the princess.

At that moment a hoarse voice surprised them.

"At the hospital... She's... fine." Regina was able to speak, even if her eyes didn't have any focus in general.

"Where is Cora?" Ruby asked.

"She's gone." Mr. Gold answered.

The next thing they heard was Regina's cry when David began to move her.

"Stop, you're hurting her!" Emma ordered with wide eyes.

"Emma, I need to get her out of here! It's going to hurt." David explained.

They looked at Regina. She was sweating and her eyes were closed. Her brow was furrowed in obvious signal of pain. Her dress, her hands and legs were stained with blood and it was possible to see the trail of tears amid the mess that was her face now. And, with David's sudden movement, her breathing had become irregular as to appear that she wasn't able to do this simple task. She was gasping and panting unsuccessfully. The sounds were scary.

"Oh my God!" Ruby exclaimed loudly.

"She can't breathe. Regina? Regina, can you hear us?" Granny put her hands on her face, but Regina wasn't responding to them.

"Regina, we'll take you to the hospital. I need you to hang in there. It will hurt, but I need you to trust me, okay?" David said and, despite the protests coming from Regina's mouth, he lifted her off the floor and put her in his arms. "Where's the car?"

Each step seemed like torture. Time seemed to have stopped. Even knowing that they were doing everything in the fastest way possible, they just weren't being fast enough. They knew it, they could feel it.

They finally reached the car. David was able to put Regina in the back seat, where Emma was already seated, and the next moment he was sitting in the driver's seat.

"I'm coming." Mr. Gold said and before anyone could protest, he sat in the passenger seat and closed the door.

"I'll see you there." Neal said and David just nodded in response. In the next second, the car was already in motion.

Amid a few failed attempts to make Regina more comfortable, Emma found that keeping her head higher than the rest of her body seemed to ease her breathing. That's why now Regina had her head resting carelessly on Emma's legs, trying to catch and regulate her breath, even with the pain.

"Great, you can do this. Breathe in and out. In and out." Emma was doing her best to keep Regina attentive to the things she was talking about.

"It hurts." Regina said between interspersed breaths.

"I know it hurts, but you are strong. You can do this." Emma encouraged, rubbing her arm in an attempt to comfort her at least a little.

Regina's eyes were open, they seemed to have no focus in general and Regina easily seemed to want to give in to fatigue and would start to close her eyes. It was then that Emma's desperate voice called her back.

"Hey, don't sleep, ok? Keep your eyes open."

"I'm tired, Emma." She whispered and fresh tears appeared in the corners of her eyes.

"I know. I know, but your tiny little one needs you to stay awake for her. You want to see her, don't you?"

With a long sigh, Regina answered. "Yes."

After a few seconds of silence, Regina looked into Emma's eyes and the blonde realized that, for the first time since they had found her, she had been able to focus her eyes on something, or rather someone and Emma couldn't help but feel a small amount of relief fill her body.

"Emma?" Regina called softly.

"I'm right here." Emma responded and took Regina's one hand that wasn't resting on her belly and squeezed it quietly, showing that she was there for her. They all were.

"Did you see her?" Regina asked expectantly.

"Who?" Emma asked confused.

"My little girl. My Isabella. Did you see her?"

A huge smile filled Emma's face.

"I did, yes."

"How is she?" Regina asked, her eyes even for a second lost contact with Emma's.

"Oh, Regina." Emma sighed. "She's beautiful, the most beautiful baby I've ever seen in my entire life... not that I've seen Henry when he was a baby, but she is simply beautiful." Emma started talking when she realized that Regina had begun to cry openly. "Regina?"

"What color is her hair? What about her eyes?" Regina was able to ask amid the storm of different emotions that was going on in her head.

"I don't know the color of her eyes, they were still closed. But she has a mop of brown hair, just like yours. She is your copy, only in miniature. Even being so small you already can see that she has your nose, your mouth... she looks so much like you-"

"Emma," Regina interrupted huskily. "I need you to promise me... something."

"Well, that depends," Emma tried to ease the tense atmosphere in the car. "What do you want?"

"I need you to promise me... that you will... take care of her, you-"

"I won't promise anything like that, Regina!" Emma cut her off with an angry voice. "You're talking like you're gonna die, but you won't!"

"Emma-" David warned her from his position.

The two men were watching the scene carefully, having no courage to stop what was happening in the back seat and the two desperately looking at the road, the speedometer and mirror.

"No! Don't Emma me." She said irritably. "You can't do that, Regina. You can't do that with your daughters and neither Henry or with Archie. You will break their hearts."

"I'm sorry." Regina asked a bit frightened by Emma's sudden explosion. "But I... I can't anymore."

"You can. I know you can, I just need you to hold on just a little longer. We are already close to the hospital, ok?"

Emma felt wretched. She was lying. They weren't close, not as close as it was necessary at that time, but now it was all she could think to say to encourage Regina to hold on at least for a little longer.

"Henry," Regina began. "He was the best thing that ever... happened to me." She smiled weakly. "I took care of him... with all my heart, I loved him... as if he was my own son -he is my son." She said. "I took care of him... when you couldn't."

"I know it and I guess I never thanked you for this, Regina. But you're the best thing that ever happened to him, I'm sure. I could never have raised him as well as you did." Emma said with her voice starting to get choked.

"But now... you can... you can take care of him and... I need you to take care of my girl too." Regina asked.

"No, Regina! I already told you to stop talking that way. You're not gonna die."

Ignoring Emma's explosion, she simply continued. "She has magic... I know she has... the two of them." Regina said massaging her belly almost imperceptibly. "And you have too, but you already know how to protect yourself... and... and she's just a baby... Promise you won't let her... use dark magic... you won't let anyone hurt her and... and you'll love her... as I love Henry... you'll love her... and-"

"Please, Regina, please. Stop talking like that. You're giving up before you should." Emma asked tearfully.

"-and Archie... he will need help too... he worries too much... and this time he was right... but I... I didn't listen to him... I thought I was fine... I thought it was normal, but it wasn't... it was all my fault." Regina didn't support more and burst into tears that came with sharp breaths. "I know he can take care of her... he will be the most wonderful dad in this world... I know that... but I don't think he knows it."

Emma frowned and closed her eyes. She realized that Regina wasn't talking about her girls anymore, she was speaking in the singular, as if only one of them would survive, as if she already knew about it and had already accepted it. And that was what left Emma angrier.

"Regina, why are you talking about her and not them?" Emma said with a warning tone. "You have two daughters and you are talking as if one of them is-" Emma then stopped and realized that Regina looked away with nothing but shame. Emma noticed her hand stroking her belly. "Regina, she'll be fine."

Emma held Regina's hand even stronger.

"I can't feel her anymore." Regina admitted with tears.

"Maybe she's just sleeping or she's tired," Emma began to speak with a soft smile. "You two made a great effort today and-"

"No..." Regina returned to weep openly. "I stopped feeling her. It's all... my fault, Emma... I should have listened to Archie... should have gone to the hospital... as he wanted."

"Hey, it's not time to keep whining, Regina. This is not your fault. Cora did this, Cora is the only guilty one here and you... you were the bravest person I've ever seen in my entire life." Emma grinned with confidence.

Then, the blonde placed her hand on Regina's hand that was on her belly and squeezed and rubbed the brunette's belly carefully.

"She'll be fine, Regina, you need to believe it. You need to believe in your girl. She is your daughter and you are stubborn, the most stubborn person I know. I bet she is also stubborn, but you need to have faith in her."

Regina let a small smile escape her lips through the pain.

"If they have to choose... if they need to choose between her and me-"

"No! I already told you to stop saying this, Regina." Emma insisted.

"You will choose her... you will save her." Regina looked hopefully at Emma. "You promise?"

Emma began to shake her head, she wanted to scream at Regina or simply stop her from saying these things, but the brunette's look didn't allow her to do that and she found herself, even against her own will, nodding.

"I promise, okay? Now stop saying that, you'll be fine."

Why did they have to be so far from the hospital? Why did Cora have to take Regina to the middle of the forest? Why did things seem so much harder without magic?

"Regina?" It was Mr. Gold's worried voice that took Emma from her thoughts and made her look at the brunette beneath her.

Regina had her eyes closed.

"Regina?" Emma called on alert. "Open your eyes."

No answer came.

Emma started to shake the brunette's head and a few seconds later a small moan was heard and the brunette struggled to open her eyes and keep them open. The three in the car let out a relieved sigh, they didn't even realize they were holding their breath until the brief moment of relief reached them.

"Don't do that again, Regina. Don't close your eyes." David warned her, splitting his gaze between the brunette and the road.

"We are already close to the hospital, ok? Hold on just a little longer." Emma insisted.

"Tired." Regina whispered. "I want to sleep."

"No." The three people in the car shouted almost at the same time.

"I know it hurts, Regina, but just hold on a little more." Emma kept trying to distract her.

"No..." Regina shook her head, smoother movements. "It doesn't hurt anymore."

And the three looked at each other briefly. They knew what that meant and it wasn't good.

"That's great." Emma lied, but it was obvious that the brunette wasn't buying her lie.

"Emma." Regina called again. "You said... we were close to... the hospital."

"And we are." Emma replied quickly.

"But you said it... a long time ago."

"I know... but now we're really close, ok?"

"Emma..." Regina called with the softer voice they could hear coming from Regina. "I think... I can't support... any longer."

Regina was using all her strength to keep her eyes open as they had requested, but it was getting so heavy. The pain was gone a while ago, which was great, but the fatigue and sleep were challenging her cruelly. Many times she simply gave in to fatigue, but Emma's insistent voice brought her back. The problem is that Emma's voice was becoming increasingly distant.

"Regina?" Emma called when she saw the brunette keep her eyes closed for more than just a few seconds. "Don't sleep, we're close."

But this time, Regina seemed detached and distracted. Her eyes lost contact with Emma's.

"Regina? Open your eyes!" Emma ordered as she shook the brunette. After a few attempts, brown eyes focused on the eyes above hers, just for a second, and a silly smile graced her lips. A smile that Regina had never directed at the blonde, a smile she had only seen before when the brunette spoke about Archie, Henry and her girls. "Regina?" Emma asked confused and worried at the same time.

"Daddy." Regina called and then her eyes finally gave in to the darkness.

Emma frowned with Regina calling for her father, but when the blonde saw Regina closing her eyes and the squeeze the brunette had on Emma's hand disappeared, despair overwhelmed her.

"Regina?! Regina, wake up. We're almost there, wake up, Regina."

The three inside the car looked frantically at the motionless brunette in the back seat of the car. She wasn't responding to Emma's calls and her chest wasn't moving.

"She's not breathing!" Emma said alarmed. "She's not breathing! Regina, wake up." Emma kept trying to wake her, but nothing happened.

David tightened his foot on the accelerator. They were breaking all the speed limits, once they finally made it out of the forest road and had reached the city streets.

"Go faster, David." Emma yelled at him. "Why are we taking so long?"

"I'm going as fast as I can, Emma." David said with watchful eyes on the road.

"Hold on, Regina. You'll be fine, you two will." Emma kept repeating these words until finally, after what seemed like several minutes, they stopped in front of the hospital.

"Whale?!" They started screaming.

"We need help. Somebody help!" Emma cried.

David managed to take Regina out of the car and was running with her in his arms toward the interior of the hospital.

"Regina?" Snow was the first to notice the agitation. "What happened?" She asked scared.

"Where is Whale?" Mr. Gold asked with a serious tone.

"I'm here." Dr. Whale said and the next moment a lot of nurses were surrounding David and Regina.

The brunette was immediately placed on a stretcher and they disappeared into one of the emergency rooms. Silence filled the room around them. None had the courage to say something, the fear present in the face of each one was already saying enough.

They stood like this, motionless, until a cry and desperate steps toward them caught the attention of the group.

"Where is my mom?" Henry said with tired and worried eyes.

"Where are they?" Archie asked desperately as he looked at the clothes that David was wearing. He was completely stained with blood.

"Henry, come here." Snow pulled the boy so he wouldn't notice the blood stains.

"Archie-" Emma began, but Archie interrupted her.

"Where are they? Are they alive?" He asked looking for the answer in their eyes, but he wasn't really enjoying the kind of look he was receiving in return.

"Dr. Whale is with them." David replied.

Looking at David in this state, he could only worry even more. "But they are alive, aren't they?"

None of them replied. David, Emma and Mr. Gold exchanged uncertain glances.

"Are they alive?" Archie asked again, his voice trembling.

"Archie," Emma started talking the way as calm as possible. "We did what we could."

"No!" Archie screamed with tears in his eyes. "Don't say that. You said you'd bring them to me."

"I know what I said, Archie, and she was awake... I swear she was... but when we were coming... she just closed her eyes... and I tried... I called her name... I tried to keep her awake... she just stopped responding, Archie." Emma said amid tears when the adrenaline was gone and the reality of what had just happened sank within her.

"No... I can't lose them." Archie whispered in horror. "I can't lose either of them." He was shaking his head and looking nowhere in general, he was simply lost.

"You need to believe that they will do it, Archie. They will get through it." Belle approached.

"It's all my fault... I knew something was wrong... if I had brought her to the hospital, if-" Archie began to whine.

"Oh, Archie. She is strong," David approached him and looked into his eyes. "Today she was the bravest woman I've seen and she was struggling so hard... you need to believe that she will do this, they will do this, Archie." And with that, the man sank into David's arms.

"She needs to be fine, David." Archie cried without caring who might be watching him. "What will I do if she isn't? I can't live without her."

There was a lot of noise, but she couldn't tell what it was.

Was it voices?

She felt sleepy and tired. Her eyes were heavy and small twinges were making her head throb further. The sound started getting louder, but she still couldn't tell what the sounds meant. She needed to know what was happening. It took a great effort for her to force her eyes open, but when she did, a strong white light invaded her eyes.

Slowly things were coming into focus. She felt something troubling in her throat, but she couldn't figure out what it was. She blinked a few times, trying to adjust to the environment around her and then people dressed in blue uniforms began to appear, but they weren't looking at her. In fact, they were looking at somewhere in the corner.

It was then that the sounds also started to make sense.

"She's not breathing."

"Come on, little girl. Come on, breathe, breathe, breathe."

She managed to direct her eyes to the source of sounds and saw someone wearing a white outfit. An attempt a little bigger and she realized that the man in the white suit was Dr. Whale. Then she saw him looking down and making moves on a small inert body that lay on top of a small gurney.

Everything made sense.

Her daughter.

Despair took over of her again. She wanted to move, hold her girl, she wanted to see her from nearby. She wanted to get up from that damn bed and get her girl in her arms and ask her to be strong, ask her to breathe, to cry, to move, anything... but her body just wasn't responding to the commands that her mind was giving.

"Breathe, my love. Breathe for mommy. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe, please."

Repeating these words in her mind was all that Regina could do at that point. Not being able to do anything was terrifying and every second seemed an eternity.

Then she felt a hand tighten on hers in an obvious sign of comfort. She looked away quickly to see who it was, but she didn't recognize the woman. She looked like a nurse, she was one of the many people wearing blue, but she had no time to think about it now.

"Breathe. Breathe. Breathe."

"She'll be fine." She heard the woman who was holding her hand speak. "She'll be fine."

Then, for the relief of everyone in the room, a faint cry was heard. Regina saw tiny little arms moving and she honestly didn't know if she should cry or smile. She never thought a simple sound could be so exciting. She never thought a simple sound like this could be so incredibly comforting.

"Regina?"

"What's happening?!"

Suddenly many questions were being directed to her at the same time. It was all so confusing. The pain returned. So much pain.

What was happening?

Nothing they spoke made sense. She tried to say something but she soon remembered the discomfort in her throat. It was as if something was preventing her from speaking, a tube maybe? She couldn't keep her eyes open. It hurt so much. Suddenly a new noise appeared in the mess of sounds from just a few seconds ago. A loud and constant sound invaded her ears as her eyes weighed more than she could bear, and then she gave in to the darkness.
