Burn

Official Disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett. Investigator Chin Ho Kelly, Officer Kono Kalakaua, Adam 'Toast' Charles, Governor Patricia 'Pat' Jameson and Detective Meka Hanamoa do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered my own character by now. Although she was originally based on the male Danny from the show, she soon evolved into her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny we all know and love is completely gone though, he definitely isn't since he still emerges from through her at times. I like to think that this female version of Danny is what he could have been like if everything in his life had gone his way. As in gaining full custody of Grace and having a decent, friendly relationship with his ex.

The character of her daughter Grace has also changed slightly due to the change made to Danni. Grace's surname in this saga is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name before she reverted back to her own maiden name when the divorce was finalised. Grace's parents are also amicable and friendly to one another which has also had an impact on Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love. I do picture Grace differently than she is portrayed in the show so please keep in mind that in my mind, Grace was played by Mackenzie Foy.

The characters of Special Agent in charge Jack O'Connor, Poppy O'Connor, Isabella O'Connor, , Duncan Taylor, Supervisory Special Agent Walker Humphries, Martin Chen and Rita Chen also belong to me as does any character in the chapter who is not instantly recognisable from the show. Please do not use them or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking my permission.

Thanks

Author's Note

Welcome to the next instalment of the 'Rewrite Saga'

If you've joined me from either 'The Beginning' or 'Family' or from any of the one shots in this series then thank you very much for sticking with this saga, I really appreciate it more than you can know. If, however, you're coming into this story completely fresh then I would strongly recommend reading the others first otherwise this might not make sense.

This story is the first chapter story in the current saga which is not based on an actual episode from the show. Instead it's what I like to refer to as a missing case story, one which happens between the episodes. This one is a great deal dark then the other stories in the saga so please keep that in mind.

There will be plenty of McDanni moments throughout the story as well as plenty of character development for all the characters.

Anyway, please enjoy.

This story features a female Danni Williams in place of a male Danny Williams. Although in some of the stories I write which aren't connected to this saga I do write them existing in the same universe, that's not the case here.

Second Disclaimer

Please note that I do not have a Beta so please forgive any mistakes which might creep in the chapter. I always do my best to edit the story before posting but sometimes I miss something.

The places which I have mentioned in Hawaii are ones which have been taken from the episode itself, from google including the addresses or somewhere I have made up. I've never been to Hawaii myself so I apologise for any mistake I may make, these are not intentional.

Part Five of the 'Rewrite saga'

Prologue

Fire, Fire burning bright

He liked being close to the fire while it burned, barely able to resist the temptation to reach out with his hand and touch it, just to see if the flames would burn him, marking his skin with their touch. A touch he would feel every time he was near.

He liked being able to see his own handiwork first hand, in the flesh, the red and orange colours lulling him into a peaceful state of relaxation, his thoughts always drifting back to the previous months which he spent planning every detail down to the wire, making sure to add those small little touches which were so much a part of his signature and which made each one perfect. He could imagine the way the victims inside would be feeling, the heat of the flames all around them, pressing in and singeing them while they lay still, unable to crawl away or even open their mouth to scream for help.

All they could do was watch and know that their time to die had arrived.

Once upon a time, back near the beginning, he had let them scream and cry out for someone to help them, those sounds of terror had been music to his ears, but the chance of someone overhearing them and calling in help was too big a risk.

He needed this… needed this fix and nothing would stop him from getting it.

After the second time he had lost his prey because they had been saved in time, he made the decision to ensure it never happened again.

He was, after all, a perfectionist who always learnt from his mistakes.

The fires and the deaths were an addiction for him, one which he wasn't in control of but one which he embraced all the same. When the urge called, and it always did, he would answered it and began planning.

It amused him when he thought back to his first kill, the one which had started the connection between the flames and what they did to people when people got too close. He could honestly say that it had been the one death which had truly been an accident.

He had been a mere kid at the time, no older than twelve and with no real idea what he was doing. All he had been interested in was watching the fire dance in front of his eyes as he took note of all the different shades of colour which he could see and the way they reflected against the dark water beneath the boat. It wasn't until he heard the terrified, pained screams that he realised that the boat, which he had thought was empty, had someone inside of it.

Someone who was now being burnt alive.

He should have been horrified by what he had done but instead he felt a thrill of excitement race up his spine, the like of which he had never experienced before. It had been enough to keep him rooted to the spot, eyes open as he panted, gaze fixed on what was in front of him until long after the screams had faded away leaving nothing but the familiar, comforting sound of the fire crackling merrily away. It hadn't been until he heard the sound of approaching sirens that he had finally moved, twisting around on the spot and running towards his home, slipping back into the dark house and into his bed before anyone had even realised that he had been out.

From that day on he was changed and became obsessed with perfecting his new found art while working hard to maintain the act that he was what people would considered a normal kid, then a normal teenager and finally a normal adult. He learned how to choose his victims, learned the best way of learning their routines and had begun to befriend them so he could ensure that his plans would be easier to accomplish. The thrill he felt when someone who he had befriended burned, consumed him, making him change his methods so he always did it that way, liking the look of betrayal which came to their eyes when they realised what he was planning on doing to them.

It still amazed him that he had never been caught and how it had taken until he was in his twenties for anyone to start suspecting him of being involved in the fires. A fact he had used to his advantage before he had moved on to a new state and a new pool of victims.

The upheaval was frustrating at times, especially if he felt he hadn't accomplished all he wanted to accomplish but he had to do it. All he cared about was the fire and making sure that the flames would take as many victims as he could offer it.

Nothing else would satisfy him and no one would be able to catch him or stop him from achieving that goal.

He would make sure of it.
