Official Disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, Adam 'Toast' Charles, Governor Patricia Jameson and Detective Meka Hanamoa, do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered to be mine by now. Although she was originally based on male Danny, she soon evolved becoming her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny Williams we all know and love is completely gone, he still emerges through her at times. I like to think of female Danni as what Danny could have been if everything in his life had gone his way. As in full custody of Grace and a decent relationship with his ex.

The character of Grace has also changed slightly due to the change in Danni. Her surname is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name (Danni reverted back to her maiden name when she was divorced). Her parents also are amicable which has also impacted Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love, if anything she's more a sweetheart now.

The character of Supervisory Special Agent in charge Jack O'Connor, Detective Abraham Lee. Supervisory Special Agent in Charge Ryan Moore, Agent Riona Harte, Doctor Rosie Lange, Kent Deacon, Ross Hall, Sasha Hall, Nicole Hall, Brent Cox and Special Agent Walker Humphries however do belong to me as does any other character who you do not recognise from the show. Please do not use them, or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking for my permission to do so.

Chapter Summary

Kono took a final picture before she slowly lowered Danni's camera away from her face, her eyes sweeping the crowd stationed just outside of the police tape. She would have thought that the group of people would have lessened now that the remains of the fire was out and the firefighters had already pack up their equipment and was in the process of leaving the scene but instead the opposite seemed true, more people were gathering drawn to the yellow tape no doubt picking up talking material for the break room at their works later on that day.

Kono Kalakaua's Point of view

Kono took a final picture before she slowly lowered Danni's camera away from her face, her eyes sweeping the crowd stationed just outside of the police tape. She would have thought that the group of people would have lessened now that the remains of the fire was out and the firefighters had already pack up their equipment and was in the process of leaving the scene but instead the opposite seemed true, more people were gathering drawn to the yellow tape no doubt picking up talking material for the break room at their works later on that day.

She shook her head slightly, wondering why people found death so fascinating before she pushed the thought out of her mind, thoughts like that could wait until later on once the case was solved. She slipped the camera into the back pocket of her jeans, crossing her arms over her chest as her gaze focused on each individual face, she could see, taking in their expressions, looking for anything on them which looked out of place. She was pretty sure she got a photo of everyone who was in the crowd. Satisfied that the job that Danni had tasked her with was done she looked away from them, her attention focusing on the team of CSU Agents who were working quietly around her, looking for evidence on how the fire was started and more importantly evidence on who had started it.

They were surprisingly efficient, working well as a team and she found herself vaguely impressed by how they seemed to be able to work with one another without using words but still seemed to know exactly where each member was and what they were doing and what they needed. The Academy hadn't really gone into much details when they had been describing the units to the cadets, the only thing they had really been told was that CSU would be at every crime scene they attended and if they discovered something then they weren't to touch it but to call a member of CSU over to where they were so they could collect the evidence and maintain the proper chain. CSU would then send them any reports in regard to the evidence they had collected and that would be the extent of their interactions with them.

Kono had made the assumption that the way they had been taught in the Academy was the way it would be for everyone, the Officers and Detectives would ignore CSU and CSU would ignore them in return, but now she was beginning to wonder whether that was the wrong way for her to look at it and that the way the Academy had taught her might have actually been wrong.

Steve, Chin and Jack seemed to treat CSU like that but it made sense in her mind that they did.

Jack was brand new to the department like she was, not only to the department but to Hawaii as well, given the small fact that he had technically moved there over the weekend period, it would make sense for the blond not to know anyone other than the other members of the taskforce at that moment in time.

Chin had been off the force for fifteen years and a lot could change in that amount of time, everyone who he knew were either gone or had been one of the people in his life who had willingly turned their back on her cousin when he had needed their support the most.

Steve was a Navy man through and through and they seemed to do things completely different there. Steve didn't just ignore the CSU Unit, he tended to ignore everyone who wasn't a member of his taskforce though Kono was willing to bet that it was more down to his laser sharp focus rather than him being a jackass.

Then there was Danni and she was the one who blew what she had been taught at the Academy out of the water. The older woman as far as she could tell, was on speaking terms with every member of CSU on both the day and night shift. She knew their names and what they were like as individuals, she even knew if they were in relationships and the name of their partner's and would talk about them in a way which indicated that she had met the majority of them in person. Kono knew that she had their numbers on her phone and that she went out for drinks with them on a regular basis when her daughter was with her father and then of course there was the small factor of her relationship with the head of the unit, Ryan Moore.

Kono had seen them together the previous Saturday at the BBQ and they had seemed really close to each other though it hadn't been clear to her whether they were merely just good friends or something more. Certainly, Danni's daughter and Ryan's own son had seemed extremely comfortable with them both indicating that they had been around each other enough for their children to be friends.

She had thought it was perhaps just Danni and that befriending people and adopting that attitude was just a part of her personality until she had met Danni's former partner Meka Hanamoa who was still active on the force and who also seemed to be on good terms with all of CSU, enough that he had invited them all to his BBQ.

It was a method which she couldn't help but think would get her more result then simply ignoring the team.

"Hey Kono, are you ready to head out now, there's nothing much more for us to do here."

Kono turned, blinking as the sound of her cousin's voice penetrated her thoughts and turned to look at him as he crossed over the wet glass towards her, his dark eyes fixed on her thoughtfully in a way which made her think there was something which was on his mind. She ignored the look, knowing from experience that there was little point in pushing Chin, he could be remarkably stubborn when he chose to be, especially when it came to his thoughts.

"Yeah I'm ready to go." She answered him, her eyes flickering around her, a slight frown coming to her face before she looked back at him with a questioning look. "I can't see Jack, where has he gone?" She queried.

"He's still inside." Chin answered her as he came to a stop in front of her. "CSU found a computer inside so he's now looking over it to see whether there is anything in it which can be salvaged or if it's beyond help due to being fried. I think Steve told him to do it." Kono glanced at the house, raising an eyebrow at the state of the exterior before she shook her head.

"From what I've gathered Jack is seriously good with computers but I don't think that makes him a miracle worker." Kono commented dryly. "I mean look at this place and tell me how a computer would survive the fire enough to be used again?" She demanded.

"I don't disagree with you but Steve gave the order so Jack has to at least try to work some magic on it. For all we know the Arsonist may have established a connection with the victims via email so being able to view them would be handy." He pointed out.

"I guess so, it just seems like a long shot to me. Are we going to wait for him to finish up here? I'm assuming it won't take him long to know if he can fix it or not. I'm surprised he's even looking here and not bringing it back to Headquarters to work on it there."

"He probably would if he was heading back there straight away Kono but Steve is sending him and Detective Lee to the site of the last crime scene to see if they can see anything there which can be linked to this crime scene and which can show us how this guy works. If we can figure out what his method to picking his victims is then maybe we can figure out who he is after next."

"Danni did mention earlier when I was speaking to her that Steve and her were going to head to the first crime scene where a death occurred to look for the same thing." She told him, the comment causing Chin to nod as he looked around them.

"It won't take anyone of them long to come back to headquarters" Chin stated, looking back at her.

"If that's the case then we better head off. We need to make a detour and stop off at the CSU Headquarters first so I can hand Danni's camera over to them to process. She asked me to take photos of the crime scene and the people who were in the crowd and wanted them developed as soon as possible so we could compare them to the other photos which Lee took from the previous crime scenes. She said to ask for someone called Agent Riona Harte when we get there, apparently she's the go to person for this kind of thing according to Danni." She explained, tilting her head to the side curiously when Chin suddenly smiled, looking amused by something. "What's got you grinning suddenly." She asked him. "Is there something you'd like to share with the rest of the class here."

"It's nothing important." He said, waving his hand to the side of him in a dismissive manner. "It just doesn't surprise me that Danni knows exactly who we should go to in CSU to get something done quickly." He went on to explain clearly catching sight of her unimpressed look. "Have you taken all the pictures then?" He questioned, reverting back to the former topic of conversation, something which Kono let past instead simply nodding at him.

"I've just finished taking them." She told him as she fished her car keys out of her jean pocket and twirled them around her finger. "By the way, any chance you've had some luck finding yourself a car you want yet?" She teased with a grin.

"I'm still looking." Chin responded with a roll of his eyes as they both moved towards the edge of the crime scene where Kono had parked her car up. A glance to the right of the red vehicle showed that Danni's silver Camaro had already disappeared from the spot she had seen it in. She smiled slightly, wondering which one out of Steve and Danni actually managed to get to the driver's seat. It was no secret within the team that Steve was obsessed with driving Danni's car and was determined to be the only one in the partnership who did just the same as it was no secret that Danni was equally determined not to let him drive all the time.

Kono had to admit though that she couldn't blame Steve; Danni had a seriously sweet ride which was much better than the blue Silverado truck which Steve had bought himself at Danni's insistence. The rate it was going though, Danni would be forced to buy herself another car since Steve would no doubt start bringing the Camaro home with him soon once he though he could get away with it.

"Well I suggest you look harder." Kono said looking towards Chin, a grin softening her words. "Because me having to swing by your place to pick you up because your precious motorbike is in the shop getting work done it, is seriously cutting into my surfing time in the mornings. It's bad enough that Boss number one wants us in the office before nine AM in the morning for team briefings without that as well." She pointed out as she unlocked the car and pulled open the driver's door, smiling when Chin laughed.

"Well I appreciate the sacrifice which you're making but rest assured that today is the last time you have to do it. The garage has already called this morning and my bike will be ready tomorrow for pick up, I'll get a car soon but it has to be a good car, I'm not going to spend all that money buying one just for the sake of one." He pointed out to her dryly.

"Maybe you should get yourself a car like Danni's since you spent quite a lot of time checking it out when you see it." Kono suggested as she climbed into the car. "Or better yet why don't you take someone with you to go and get it so you can ask their opinion. Jack only has a rental at the moment so he'll be on the lookout for a car of his own, especially as he'll be living here now with his kids and his sister. Didn't he mention earlier that they were arriving in from Washington DC today?" She asked him curiously.

Chin nodded as he pulled his seatbelt on.

"The flight they are on is due to land at eight this evening." Chin responded with a half-smile. "Jack has an app on his phone and laptop downloaded which is literally counting down the seconds until they arrive here. I think it's safe to say that he is looking forwarded to be reunited with them again.

"Who could blame him, they've probably been separated for five days or something since he was probably here before last Friday right? That would be a long time to be without your kids." Kono responded, glancing over her shoulder as she reversed out of the space and began driving towards the nearest highway which would take them directly to the building that CSU were based in. They drove together in a comfortable silence for a minute or so when Chin spoke.

"So how are you finding all this then?" He asked her. "Is being on the police force like you thought it would be?"

Kono hit her indicator taking a road to the right as she considered his question carefully as she glanced towards him as she shook her head.

"The honest answer to that question is no." She replied. "But I think it's because I was expecting to start off like the rest of you did, you know wearing the uniform daily, partnering up and walking a beat but instead I've somehow landed the job which every uniformed police officer would probably give their right arm for. Officers who have served their time on the force for much longer than I have wanted it and yet I'm the one here, working the elite cases on the island with you and the others." She said, gripping the steering wheel tightly in her hands. "I mean I know I've struck gold and having Steve and Danni as my bosses is a stroke of luck as well but it still feels like a lot of pressure you know? I don't want them to think they made the wrong decision by hiring me or to let them or you down in anyway." She admitted.

She heard Chin breathe out nosily but kept her eyes on the road in front of her, it was late morning and the traffic was already building up in the usual midday rush hour.

"You're going to make mistakes Kono, we all will but if you weren't good enough to be here then you wouldn't be here. Steve knows that he's looking for in his team and he has personally hand selected all of us including Danni so he clearly saw something in you and believes that you bring something to the team which he thinks is worth having. That's the part you should be focused on, not on anything else."

"Yeah but you and Danni…" Kono began saying when Chin cut across her.

"Look just keep doing what you're doing Kono and you'll be fine. I'm proud of you and as for Danni, well do you really think that you would be here if she hadn't of agreed with Steve about you? Forget about the rest of us and just work your ass off and prove to everyone that you deserve this spot. That's all you have to focus on doing. Take the chance you've been given to observe everyone, you've got a good group of people to learn from, I mean there is a military man, a Detective and a Special Agent and myself. Not many people have that much variety around them when they start." He pointed out with a warm look at her.

"I've been paying attention Cuz like you said I should last week." She told him, the tension in her shoulders easing out of her at his positive words.

"Good" Chin stated, reaching out and patting her on the shoulder. "Now stop worrying about whether you deserve to be here okay because I would be the first one to tell you if you didn't." He promised before he took her hand from her shoulder and pointed across her to a three storied red bricked building on the other side of the road. "There it is." He commented.

"I can see it" Kono said, hitting the indicator again and pulling into the car park, stopping outside the barrier. She rolled down the window, smiling at the uniformed officer and held her badge up to him. "Hi I'm Officer Kalakaua, badge number 58743 with the Governor's taskforce. I'm here to see CSU, they are expecting us." She told the man who leaned down and peered into the car. Kono glanced to the side as Chin held his badge up as well.

"Okay Officer Kalakaua, head on through." He told them, turning and waving at the other man in the small security building. Kono flashed him a smile as the barrier rose and they drove through.

"Tell me, just how much did you enjoy being able to announce yourself in that way?" Chin teased with a laugh as she turned and grinned widely at him.

"I'm not going to lie Cuz, it felt pretty damn good to say it." She replied as she pulled into a free parking spot and killed the engine, she unclipped her seatbelt and pushed her car door open, stepping back into the warm breeze, a smile coming to her face as it ruffled through her hair. Closing the door behind her, she locked it and headed towards the entrance, pulling open one of the doors and went in, aware of Chin entering right behind him. The guard behind the desk looked at them, his eyes lingering on their badges for a moment before he waved them over to them.

"Sign in please" He stated, patting his finger against the book in front of him, his brown eyes watching them carefully. Kono nodded at the instruction and picked the pen up, filling in her details before she passed it to Chin who did the same. The guard glanced down at the page before he reached for something under the desk. He pulled out one thing car which he passed over to her. "You'll need that to get through the doors here Officer Kalakaua, once you've finished with your business in the building then please bring it back to me here." He told her. Kono nodded, gripping the card lightly before they turned and headed towards the big double doors behind them, she glanced over her shoulder in time to see the guard reach under his desk again before a loud buzzing sound in front of her caught her attention. She glanced at Chin as he pulled one of the now unlocked doors open and stepped through into an empty corridor.

"Do you have any idea where exactly we should be heading?" Kono asked Chin as they began moving around it, looking though the windows of every door as they passed by.

"Nope." Chin responded with a shrug. "When I was still on the force, CSU were in a tiny building off the main boulevard. This place is completely new to me."

Kono sighed, glancing through a window before she suddenly stopped in her tracks and took a few steps backwards, peering through the glass again.

"It looks like we might have just gotten lucky." She stated as she reached up and knocked on the door before she swiped her card to the panel at the side and opened the door, stepping inside, her gaze fixed on the tall, dark haired man who was leaning down peering through a telescope at something. He looked up at their entrance, bright blue eyes fixing on them for a moment.

"Hey Ryan." Kono said with a smile at him.

"Hey Kono" Ryan Moore answered with a smile of his own. "I'm assuming you're trying to find Riona to pass Danni's camera over to her but have gotten yourselves lost?" He queried, his smile growing when she shot him a surprised look. "Danni already called me earlier telling me that you would be dropping in, I've let Riona know as well so she's expecting you and your delivery." He explained before his gaze moved over to Chin with a thoughtful look as he continued speaking. "You must be Chin Ho Kelly right? Danni's told me a lot about you. I'm Ryan Moore, head of the CSU unit in Hawaii" He commented with a wave of his hand around him. "It's good to be able to meet you and put a face to the name.

"Good to meet you as well Ryan." Chin responded with a nod at him which Ryan returned before he looked back at his telescope clearly wanting to get back to whatever it was, he had been doing when they interrupted him.

"Riona is based in the room three doors down from this one on the right, you can't miss her." He stated with another nod at them.

"Thanks for your help Ryan, see you later" Kono called out to him, sharing a quick look with Chin.

"Later." He responded already sounding distracted.

"So that was the famous Ryan Moore then" Chin commented lightly once they had left the room. "He's not quite what I was expecting considering the description Steve gave of him." He said. Kono glanced towards him, opening his mouth to question him when he pulled the door open and ushered her into a room which looked similar to the first one, they had just been in. A dark-haired woman in her mid-thirties was sat behind a desk, glaring at the computer screen as she typed away slowly at the keyboard. She glanced up at them, her pale green eyes widening as she breathed a sigh of relief as she came to her feet.

"Please tell me that you are the Kono who Danni mentioned to me on the phone? The one who is bringing me the photos from a crime scene and who is saving me from the horror of reports?" She asked hopefully. A wide smile coming to her face when Kono nodded, reaching into her back pocket and taking out the camera. The woman moved forward quickly and took it from her, looking down at it thoughtfully before she moved to the table at the side of the room. "It won't take me long to get these developed for you. Once they are done, I'll email them to you and to Danni." She stated before looking back at them. "Oh, and I'm Agent Riona Harte but please call me Riona, it's nice to finally meet you both."

"Finally?" Kono repeated in surprise, watching as Riona nodded at her.

"What you don't think that Danni-girl has talked about you all? You know I was meant to be there at the BBQ on Saturday but something came up or we would have met there. I heard from the others that you were there as well Kono." She said before her eyes moved to Chin, looking at him thoughtfully. "Based on Danni's description you must be Chin Ho Kelly." She commented, flashing him another smile. "Yeah, so I'll email the results to you, thanks for dropping this off to me."

"Thanks for doing them so quickly, we appreciate it." Chin responded, smiling back at Riona before he looked at Kono. "We should head back to the headquarters." He told her. Kono nodded, saying her goodbyes to Riona before they left the room.

"She seems really nice." Kono said after a second. "Excitable but nice."

"It takes all sorts I guess?" Chin replied blandly, the tone of his voice making Kono look at him quickly before she looked away as they exited back into the main foyer again. Kono handed the card back to the guard and quickly signed out. They left the building and got back into the car, driving the ten minutes ride from CSU building to their own in relative silence. Kono's mind fixing on the case as the tried to figure out exactly who they were dealing with.

They parked up and made their way through the building up to the third floor before they entered the headquarters. Kono glanced around, not surprised to see that they were the first two back. Toast was standing at the computer table, his hands flying over the touch screen keyboard. There was a hand free ear piece in his ear and from the way he was nodding it was clear that he was talking to someone.

He glanced up as they approached him and smiled at them before his eyes lowered again as he spoke, his voice mellow and surprisingly pleasant to listen to.

"Okay, yeah I've got it, it should take me fifteen minutes to break through that encryption for you Jack. I'll let Danni and the Commander know what you've found when they get back, they rang just staying they were heading back so it shouldn't take them long to get here from where they were" He told the other man, making a sudden sound of acknowledgement at the back of his throat, his eyes flickering away from them. "Yeah you got it fella, leave it to me." He stated before he picked up his cell from the table surface and ended the call, his eyes coming back to Chin and Kono.

Kono smiled at him, realising that this was the first time that they had both been alone with just Toast since he had joined their team.

"Sounds like you've been busy while we were at the scene." Kono remarked, raising an eyebrow when make an amused huffing sound as he nodded.

"Put it this way, I don't think I'm going to be bored here." He said before he stuck his hand out to her. "Kono right? Sorry if I got your name wrong, I'm not the best when it comes to remembering things like that. I'm Adam Charles but call me Toast, only my parents call me Adam." He said with a smile. Kono took his hand and shook it, surprised by the strong grip he had before he realised it and held it out to Chin who took it and shook it as well. "It's Chin, right?" He asked, breathing a visible sigh of relief when Chin nodded.

Kono looked at her cousin, mentally shaking her head as she caught sight of the thoughtful look on the other man's face. A look which told her that chin didn't quite know what to make of their newest team member.

"It sounds like Jack found something?" Kono asked, breaking the silence, her eyes flickering up to the plasma screen, noting that there were several pictures and electronic files open.

"Yeah" Toast said. "He wants me to look into a name which Detective Lee had given him, apparently Lee has interviewed the guy twice because he's been lingering around the scene showing too much interest in what's going on. I mean you can understand someone being at one scene, you can just be passing by in your car and decide to get out and see what is happening or you know happen to live on the same street as the fire but for it happen twice, at two different scenes, is just bizarre."

"That is a good catch" Chin said. "What is the guy's name?" He asked Toast.

"It's Martin Chen" Toast told him before his phone went off, he took the ear piece out of his ear and pressed down on the connect button putting the phone on loud speaker. "Hello?"

"Toast" Steve answered coolly over the phone, the tone making Kono raise an eyebrow though Toast either ignored it or didn't pick up on it in the first place.

"That is me, what do you need?" He responded lightly.

"I want an update." Steve said abruptly. Kono raised an eyebrow when she suddenly heard Danni speak quietly in the background, she couldn't make out the words but there was no mistaking the scolding tone of her voice. There was a muffled sound as though Steve had covered the mouthpiece to answer her before he spoke again, an undercurrent of annoyance to his voice. "Sorry Toast, could you provide us with an update on the others? Are they yet or is it just you?

Kono choked back a laugh as Chin spoke, the grin on his face reflecting in his tone.

"Kono and I have just arrived back Steve." He announced.

"And Jack just called in with a lead that he wants me to check out. He is about twenty-five minutes out but him and Lee are on their way back to the Headquarters now." Toast added.

"What lead did he find?" Steve demanded, sounding vaguely interested.

"He's got a name of someone who he wants me to check out on the system, a man called Martin Chen." Toast remarked, typing the name into the HPD and NSA database as he spoke.

"Wait a minute Toast, Danni is just going through the files that Lee gave her earlier now, the name Martin Chen is striking a chord with her." Steve remarked. Kono shook her head, clearly Steve had won the driver's seat if Danni was looking through files. "I'm just putting you all on loudspeaker.

"Hello Toast, I've got the same name in this file I'm looking at. He's a local man who Lee has spoken to at the site of two previous fires, is that who you are talking about?" Danni asked.

"That sounds like the same guy who Jack was talking about Blondie." Toast agreed. "I'm just bringing his details up now." He stated. Kono watched as the screen suddenly flooded with information about Martin Chen, the side of the screen taking up by a photo of him. He looked to be in his late thirties, dark hair, dark eyes, his face blank of any expression as he stared in the camera.

"We've got his details up here on the screen Danni." Kono said, placing her palms on the table and leaning forward.

"Yeah what do we have on him?" Steve answered for Danni.

"Martin Chen, he's thirty-four years old and has lived in the same two block radius for his whole life from the look of it which obviously makes him a native to the island. According to this he has a juvenile record as well which is currently sealed by the courts. There are a few assault charges from when he was in his early twenties which were later dropped and then nothing since then, he's clearly kept his nose clean since then. He is married as well to a woman called Rita but they don't have any kids." Kono read out, her eyes moving across the screen.

"We need to see the Juvenile record" Danni said. "Chin find out who the judge is on duty today and see if you can convince them to sign a waiver to let us view his record. Toast be ready to step in if that fails. Kono can you run a background check on Martin and see what you come up with. I want to know who he's been hanging out recently, especially if they happened to be new in his life. Even if Chen isn't the man responsible for setting the fires, I can't help but think that he's involved in this somehow. We should be arriving in ten minutes time." She instructed softly.

"You've got it Boss." Kono said just before Toast ended the call. The three of them glanced at each other before Chin spoke.

"You heard our Boss Lady; we've got work to do."
