Official Disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, Adam 'Toast' Charles, Governor Patricia Jameson and Detective Meka Hanamoa, do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered to be mine by now. Although she was originally based on male Danny, she soon evolved becoming her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny Williams we all know and love is completely gone, he still emerges through her at times. I like to think of female Danni as what Danny could have been if everything in his life had gone his way. As in full custody of Grace and a decent relationship with his ex.

The character of Grace has also changed slightly due to the change in Danni. Her surname is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name (Danni reverted back to her maiden name when she was divorced). Her parents also are amicable which has also impacted Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love, if anything she's more a sweetheart now.

The character of Supervisory Special Agent Jack O'Connor, Detective Abraham Lee. Martin Chen. Rita Chen, Doctor Rosie Lange, Kent Deacon, Ross Hall, Sasha Hall, Nicole Hall, Brent Cox and Special Agent Walker Humphries however do belong to me as does any other character who you do not recognise from the show. Please do not use them, or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking for my permission to do so.

Steve McGarrett's Point of view

Steve reached up and ended his connection with Toast and Danni, placing his hand back on the steering wheel, barely noticing how tightly he was gripping it as he easily navigated his partner's car through the crowded highway. His mind focused on the case as he tried to piece together everything that they already knew about the case to see if anything hinted towards who was responsible for the attacks.

Attacks which were clearly growing in frequency from what they had gathered and which had an ever-growing death rate. Steve knew that it would be only a matter of time before the Arsonist became confident enough in his ability and method to attack a highly populated area like a shopping mall or the movies. They just had to make sure that they caught the person before he or she got the chance to initiate the plan.

There was no doubt in his mind that Martin Chen was involved somehow in all of this, the only thing he wasn't sure of was what part the man played in it? Whatever it was he was determined to find out and to get as much information as he could out of him. Steve hated knowing they had no real suspect presently especially as it was clear that Chen was not the arsonist who they were hunting. If he had been the guy behind it then Detective Lee would have found the link long before this point and arrested him. Still, like the others, he couldn't accept that Chen being at two crime scenes was a coincidence.

Steve's eyes flickered over to Jack who was sitting beside next to him in the passenger seat. He looked relaxed, staring out of the passenger window with a thoughtful look on his face. For a moment Steve found himself missing Danni and the way they would spend any journey together during an active case bouncing ideas off of each other. He was aware that he and Danni were still in that awkward stage of getting to know each other and how each of them worked but he was slowly beginning to get her to open up slightly more to him and to actually tell him a bit about herself. The more he found out, the more he wanted to know about her and it was only in these car journeys that he found he could get away with inserting a personal question into the mix.

His eyes narrowed slightly on Jack as he wondered how the other man worked. He had clearly worked well with Chin when they had been paired up on the Lowry case which could have meant that his style was more suitable for someone with a cop background then someone with a military one. He knew next to nothing about the other man and what little information he had received was from Chin and Danni. He needed to know more than that which meant getting Toast on the job once the case was over and getting him to produce a proper file on all the members of the team.

Steve liked knowing facts, including any facts about his team that might bite the team in the ass at a later date. If he knew about them in advance then he could ensure that he had a plan in place in case anything happened in the future.

"So how do you want to play this then when we're at Chen's house?" Jack asked, breaking the silence between them as he turned to look at Steve with a questioning look on his face. "I'm assuming we're taking it calmly first?"

"Depends what you mean by calmly" Steve answered. "I plan to simply knock on the door and question whoever is present in the house, if they don't answer my questions or I sense something is off then I'll be bringing whoever it is back to headquarters and sticking them in interrogation room one, I'm sure some time in there with a Danni special will soon get them answering questions." He replied, his mouth quirking up into a half smile. "Chin and Kono will take on his work and if I know my partner, she's already arranged for us all to have backup from HPD. She's very big on backup." He said with a roll of his eyes.

Jack nodded before he spoke up, a curious look in his pale blue eyes.

"I have to ask, what on earth is a Danni special and what does interrogation room one have to do with it?" He asked.

"Interrogation one through to three are rooms which were designed to hold prisoners awaiting their trials when the Headquarters was still a court. They aren't pleasant, there's no windows and therefore no natural light. When we have someone, who will be tough to break then Danni will always give out the same instructions. For the suspect to be placed in one of those rooms, the lights turned off so only the blue lights remain to lessen their sight and then she turns the air con on. The combination of the darkness and coldness seems to produce results. I've only seen her do it once since the taskforce started but considering how easily she gave the instructions I would say it's something she's used before probably at HPD and in New Jersey, hence why I call the method a Danni special, though she's not aware I do." Steve explained, feeling proud of his partner as he grinned at her methods.

"Wow" Jack said before he laughed and shook his head. "Remind me never to do anything which warrants a Danni special."

"You and me both" Steve admitted, startled at the easy flow of conversation between them.

"Do we have any idea where Chen's wife is?" Jack queried, obviously bringing the conversation back onto the safer grounds of the case, something which Steve found himself thankful for. He shook his head.

"Not yet but we soon will, Danni's looking into her background now which will no doubt include where she works. There is a chance that the wife has nothing to do with this situation though, it wouldn't exactly be the first time in history that a spouse has had no idea what their other half was up to when they weren't together." Steve said with a frown.

"It's possible, it's also possible that she does, we should question her regardless, just to be sure." Jack remarked, nodding at Steve when he made a sound of acknowledgement at the back of his throat.

"I plan to look into them both since they are currently our only real leads. If she is at the house then we'll being her into headquarters for questioning as well. If not then we can swing by her work and pick her up, or if Chen is here then Kono and Chin can do it." Steve stated confidently.

"Sounds like a solid plan to me." Jack replied before he fell silent again.

Steve watched from the corner of his mind as the other man adjusted himself slightly in the chair so he could reach into the pockets of his jeans and pulled out his cell phone. He looked down at it, pressing something on the keypad, a wistful smile coming to his face as he viewed something on the screen. Steve considered ignoring it but he could still hear Danni's words from earlier about giving both Jack and Toast a chance to prove themselves, floating around his head. He could almost picture the look and the slight little nudge she would be giving him if she was here with him. He breathed out silently and spoke.

"So, Danni mentioned to me earlier that your daughters are flying in today from the mainland?" He commented as he hit the indicator and pulled the car into the next road to the right of them.

"Yeah they are, according to this." He said, waving his cell slightly to indicate what he meant as he spoke. "They should both be landing in LA within the hour. Then it just a case of them getting on the connecting flight and they'll be here with me." Jack answered, his voice brightening as a large grin came to his face.

"How many daughters do you have?" Steve asked as Jack slipped his phone back into his pocket.

"Two daughters." He replied. "Poppy is my eldest and Isabella is the youngest. My older sister and her two sons are actually flying over with them so at least they are with people they know well." He said in obviously relief.

Steve glanced over to him, noting a look in the other man's eyes which made it clear that he had said all he was going to say on the subject. He was clearly protective of his children and wasn't willing to give too many details about them to someone who was still a stranger to him. Steve could understand it, having seen the same thing from Danni when it came to Grace.

"Hey Boss, are you there?"

Steve blinked, turning his eyes back to the road, hiding his surprise at Kono's voice in his ear.

"Yeah, I'm hearing you loud and clear Kono, what have you got for me?" He questioned, frowning slightly as he looked towards Jack and gave him a pointed nod. Jack clearly got the message as he reached up and activated his own ear piece so he could hear the conversation between Steve and Kono.

"I just wanted to let you know that we're nearly at the bank where Chen is listed as working in." She told them.

"Good, what is your ETA to it?" He pressed making a mental note to get the members of his team into the habit of automatically supplying him with ETAs times.

"Ten minutes at the very tops. We've also got a positive confirmation that Chen was in work this morning though apparently when someone went to locate him, they couldn't see him. They asked around and it seems that the last time anyone can remember seeing him was an hour ago. The manager seemed to be under the impression that he was on his coffee break though apparently the employees will often sneak out to a café on the other side of the road and take their caffeine fix there." Kono explained.

"Their employee has been gone for an hour and they aren't sure where he went and that doesn't concern them?" Jack asked in disbelief. "They must have some pretty easy-going rules when it comes to the length of break times because back in Washington if you were longer than five minutes then they sent security to find out if you were alright."

"If he has skipped out of work then he may be on his way to your location, maybe he needed to go home for some reason or…" Kono's voice trailed off uneasily.

"Or he's on his way to another crime scene which means we could end up with a call from dispatch informing us of a fire and more bodies." Steve finished for her.

"He has never struck that quickly between fires before." Chin pointed out in a reasonable tone. "And from what we've seen he seems pretty set in his ways. Kono said that Lee mentioned his theory on how the perps stalking the chosen victims first so he can learn their routines. I doubt if this guy, who is probably holding down a full-time job and trying to appear normal, had the time to stalk two families at once without anyone noticing."

"That's true" Steve agreed slowly. "Unless he's not working alone and he actually has a partner who has been helping him when it comes to choosing his victims, maybe they do the initial leg work for him. It would explain how he could befriend them if he already had the information about what they liked and disliked to hand."

"Guys I hate to interrupt when you're theorising with one another but I've got into Martin Chen's juvenile record like you asked and don't worry, anyone looking will think that the hack originated in Switzerland." Toast stated, cutting across their conversation.

"Good work Toast." Steve stated. "What did you find out from it?"

"I found out that Chen has been arrested by HPD three times for being a peeping tom between the ages of fourteen and sixteen, apparently HPD received a lot of complaints from the women living around his parent's house about it. The judge who oversaw the case gave him community service rather than jail time but that could have been down to the fact that Chen's dad at the time was an aide to the Governor and had connections, like the kind of connections you only get by doing lots of favours for people, favours which might not all be quite above board. Even with that connection it looks like it was a close thing. There's nothing after the age of seventeen so either Chen has actually changed his ways and become a model citizen or he has just learnt the best way to carry on doing what he was doing without being caught." Toast said, his words running into each other before his voice seemed to give way.

"I read in a study that being a peeping tom is often the first step towards a whole range of other crimes." Jack commented thoughtfully. "In fact, I'm pretty sure it said in the same study that they most Arsonist have a history of being a peeping tom."

"That's not enough to build a case and we won't be able to use it in our reports or in our lines of questioning until the judge officially gives us a warrant to access it so we need to find the evidence the judge wants to do that. We also have to make sure that we won't mention his juvenile record to anyone or the whole case could fall apart on us and you can be the ones to explain to Danni why that is." Chin warned them in a serious voice.

"Speaking of Blondie, Boss man she's just coming back into the bul pen and wants to have a word with you before you reach Chen's house." Toast remarked, sounding briefly distracted.

Steve felt his mouth curl up into a smile at the sound of Danni's voice as she began to speak.

"Hey guys, I've been looking into Martin Chen's wife like you requested Steve and it turns out that she is quite the interesting person in her own right, definitely interesting enough that whoever is the pair heading to the house should definitely pick her up and bring her back for questioning." She told them.

"What have you found out Danni?" Steve asked his partner.

"Well you know that we have it on record that Martin Chen has been at two of the previous crime scenes, right?" She commented.

"Yeah." Kono answered, sounding curious.

"Well it turns out that his wife has been to three of the crimes scenes, perhaps all six of them though it will take time for verify it." Danni remarked.

"How was a detail like that missed?" Jack queried. "You mentioned that Detective Lee was a good detective but that seems a big link to overlook."

"Because it turns out that Rita Chen is a great deal smarter than her husband is. The first time that she was interview by the police was at the Kane crime scene she gave her name as Rita Chen, the second time when she was at the Meyer scene she gave her name as Rita Larsson which was her maiden name from before she got married and at today's scene she said her name was Rita Perry which was her own mother's maiden name. She keeps changing the surname at every crime scene she was interviewed at. I bet if we do locate her in the photos then she would look different in each of them. It's amazing for example how much a change in hairstyle can alter someone's appearance.

"That still doesn't explain how she fell through the cracks." Steve pointed out.

"She fell through the cracks because no one managed to make the connection, she was interviewed each time by a different uniformed officer who hadn't encountered her before and I guess that Rita is a common enough name here that it didn't twig when Lee was going through the case files that all there of them were actually the same person. It could be that Martin Chen isn't the one who is in contact with the Arsonist, maybe it's actually been his wife and she was the one who brought him in as a romantic thing for them to do."

"Toast, see if the GPS on her phone is on and use it to locate Rita Chen, also hack into the bank CTV system at Chen's work and use it to try and locate him in the building, apparently no one has seen him for the past hour so we need to find out whether he is still in that building or not." Steve stated

"You've got it, I'll find the wife first and then get straight onto that, I had a glance at the security for the bank earlier and it should be easy for me to get in without raising alarms. Honestly they should consider upping it." Toast said, sounding unimpressed.

"Good, get on with it then Toast." Steve replied.

"Steve, that reminds me, while I have you on the coms with me, there's something I want to ask you." Danni remarked lightly, the change in her tone putting him on guard. He had only heard her use that tone once before and it was when she was annoyed with someone.

"Yes Danni?" He asked, raising an eyebrow when she remained silent for a moment.

"I was just curious about what car you are driving right now." She questioned. "I mean I'm assuming that you are in Jack's rental car and you're not currently driving my Camaro, right? The same Camaro that I'm going to be needing extremely shortly to drive to the DA's office and then on to pick up my daughter from school. If I don't have my car then I'm going to struggle to do that which is why I know you wouldn't have done that to me and that my car will be safe in my parking spot when I head downstairs right?" She said flatly. Steve froze, his hands tightening on the steering wheel, his eyes flickered over to Jack who was now staring at him with a half surprised, half amused look on his face. "I'll take it from your silence that you have in fact taken my car then?" Danni pressed, sounding irritated.

"It was a simple mistake Danni, it was a reflex reaction to head over to it and I still had the keys from when I drove earlier, I didn't think." Steve said, trying to soothe his partner. He knew from her tone exactly how she was feeling, she might as well have screaming the words at him. "Can't Toast-"

"Toast rides a scooter Steven." Danni responded, cutting him off before Steve could continued his sentence. He pulled a face, his mind moving swiftly over various solutions before he landed on one which seemed doable and suitable.

"Okay" He said, trying to ignore the fact that the rest of the team were eagerly listening over their own ear pieces, no doubt finding the whole conversation amusing. "Okay Danni, here's what we're going to do, head into my office and in my top drawer you'll find the spare keys to my house, head over there and into the house, I'll text you the code for the alarm system. You'll find the keys to my truck in a bowl on the table by the front door. Take them and use my truck for the rest of today. I'll bring the Camaro back to you this evening and take my truck back then."

"You want me to take your truck." Danni repeated, the flat tone to her voice turning icy, making him hold back on a wince with difficulty.

"That's right" He agreed.

He heard her breathe out nosily before she spoke, no doubt rubbing at the back of her neck or pinching the bridge of her nose in frustration.

"You and I are going to be having a very long talk when you bring my car back to me later Steven. Do not damage it in any shape or form. Jack, I'm counting on you to keep your eyes on him and make sure he doesn't do anything stupid." Danni remarked. "I'm out of contact for the next two hours because I now have to go out of my way to get a taxi to your house to get the truck because you took my car instead of Jack's and for the record you will be paying me back for this taxi. Text me with updates about what is happening, that goes for you and Kono as well Chin. I want to know everything that is happening as I'll start filling in the DA about the case as well." Danni told them before they heard a click which indicated that Danni had disconnected from the conversation.

"Erm I'll get onto finding out what Rita Chen's location is and let you know what I find then I'll hack into the bank feed. Chin and Kono, I'll remain on the line with you so I can be your eyes during it when you arrive. If Chen is in that building somewhere then I'll find him." Toast said awkwardly into the silence which had fallen.

"We're nearly at the bank so we'll contact you if there are any issues or when we actually have Chen." Kono said before there was the sound of multiple clicks meaning the others had left them to it.

Steve felt Jack look towards him, his mouth partially open as though he was about to say something when he stopped himself, closing it and looking out the window instead, something which Steve was profoundly thankful for.

He frowned, finding himself wondering just how pissed off Danni was with him and wondering why it bothered him that she clearly was.

"We're nearly there now according to the sat nav" Jack said, attracting Steve's attention away from his thoughts, wondering how Jack knew that when he realised that Jack had his phone out and was looking down at it. He was saved from responding when a click followed by Toast's voice occurred.

"Hey Boss, Rita Chen's phone GPS is stating that she is at her house. I checked with her work and they said that she rang in work earlier claiming she had a migraine and hadn't been in all day. I've just logged into the bank CTV so I'm going to join Kono and Chin on their coms." Toast informed them before disappearing again.

"Well that should answer your question from earlier O'Connor about how we're going to do this." Steve remarked. "Let's knock on the door, gain entrance to the place and bring Rita Chen in for questioning, if her husband is here as well then we bring him in as well, neither of them are getting away from us." Steve said as he pulled the Camaro into the spot outside the Chen's house, blocking the car in the drive in.

"Yeah I got it." Jack replied as he pushed open the door and climbed out the car. Steve followed, closing the door, his eyes moving to the house and giving it a customary scan, noting that it was one storied with a small front yard. There was nothing that made it stand out, it merely looked the same as every other house in the street.

He looked over the roof of the car at Jack and nodded at him waiting until the other man nodded back at him. They headed up the path and knocked on the front door. Steve raised his eyebrow when he heard the sound of footsteps approaching the door. A second later it opened revealing a woman. She looked to be in her mid-thirties, tall and slim with curly dark brown hair and Dark eyes which flickered between the two of them with a curious look.

"Can I help you?" She asked them.

"Are you Rita Chen?" Jack queried, ignoring her question, his attention focused on her.

"That's me." She replied slowly.

"My name is Supervisory Special Agent O'Connor and this is Lieutenant Commander McGarrett, we're with the Governor's task force. We're looking for your husband Martin Chen. Is he currently at home with you? Jack questioned.

"My husband?" She repeated, gripping the door frame tightly in her hand. "He's actually at work at the moment, is there any reason why you need to speak to him? I can leave him a message or if you wanted to leave your card with me then I can ask him to give you a call when he's home." She offered with a tight smile.

"That won't be necessary as we also need to speak to you about the same matter." Steve told her, she looked at him, opening her mouth as though she was about to argue the point with him when he stopped her. "Let me be clear, you will be answering our questions Mrs Chen. The only decision you need to make is if you're going to do this the easy way or the hard way. If you take the easy way and come with us willingly to our headquarters then we can tell the DA that you did and that you cooperated fully with us, if not…"his voice trailed off as he gave her a pointed look.

"Okay, I understand, I'll come with you." She said after a pause as she turned from them and slipped her feet into a pair of pumps, her head tilted towards them, watching them carefully.

"O'Connor take her to the car." Steve ordered the other man, waiting until Jack had escorted her to the Camaro and placed her in the back seat before he reached up and reactivated his ear piece. "Chin? Kono report in"

"We just caught Martin Chen, Steve" Chin answered after a moment of silence. "He tried to escape through the back entrance of the bank but Toast had already spotted him on the CTV camera before he could get far. Kono and a few uniforms were ready to greet him."

"Good job, O'Connor and I have picked up his wife and are heading back to Headquarters now. Put Chen in interview room one, his wife will be in room three."

"You got it Steve, we'll see you and Jack back at the headquarters." Chin answered.

"Yeah see you there" He answered, looking towards Rita in the back seat and allowing himself a small smile.

They were finally getting somewhere
