Official Disclaimer
The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, Adam 'Toast' Charles, Governor Patricia Jameson and Detective Meka Hanamoa, do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.
The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered to be mine by now. Although she was originally based on male Danny, she soon evolved becoming her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny Williams we all know and love is completely gone, he still emerges through her at times. I like to think of female Danni as what Danny could have been if everything in his life had gone his way. As in full custody of Grace and a decent relationship with his ex.
The character of Grace has also changed slightly due to the change in Danni. Her surname is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name (Danni reverted back to her maiden name when she was divorced). Her parents also are amicable which has also impacted Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love, if anything she's more a sweetheart now.
The character of Supervisory Special Agent Jack O'Connor, Detective Abraham Lee. Doctor Rosie Lange, Kent Deacon, Ross Hall, Sasha Hall, Nicole Hall, Brent Cox and Special Agent Walker Humphries however do belong to me as does any other character who you do not recognise from the show. Please do not use them, or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking for my permission to do so.

Kono Kalakaua's Point of View
Kono's hand tightened on the door frame as she saw the look that passed between Steve and Danni at her words. For a split second she wished she could take them back but she was already beginning to learn that their job wasn't going to quite as easy as that.
"Of course, there is another problem." Steve muttered to himself, low enough that Kono had to strain to hear him before Danni spoke up, her voice quiet though that was little surprise since Danni's voice tended to always come out as quiet.
"What has happened Kono?" She asked her as she moved towards Kono, reaching up and placing her hand lightly on Kono's shoulder, using the soft grip to twist her around on the spot before pushing her back into the main bul-pen area.
Kono remained silent for a moment as she came to a stop next to the computer table, her eyes focusing briefly on Jack as he worked frantically clearly lost in his own world before she finally turned to the others and spoke.
"There's been another fire and according to the first reports which are already coming in, the MO is the same as the previous fires which means this one is probably done by the Arsonist. He's struck again and like the last three cases, there are bodies in this one." Kono explained, letting out a shaky breath when her words failed.
Danni's eyes widened at the news as she turned to Steve, sharing another look with him which Kono couldn't read before the small blonde looked at Jack and spoke, an undercurrent of concern and disbelief to her voice as though she couldn't quite believe the news which Kono had just imparted to them. It was the first time since they had met that Kono had seen concern from the older woman in regards to the job.
"Jack, what is the address where the latest fire happened?" She asked the blond man, almost hesitantly.
Jack looked up at the question, his face grim as he answered her.
"The address is the same one where Martin and Rita Chen were bailed to last night Danni."
"Shit" Steve swore, dragging his hand through his hair at the news which Kono realised in surprise that both Steve and Danni were expecting if the look on their faces was anything to go by. "Okay we need to get down there now, Danni you're with me. Kono, you're with O'Connor, we'll meet down there. Danni have you…?" His words trailed off as he shot Danni a questioning look.
"I've already got the address written down. I spoke to Ryan late last night and he mentioned that Kale was on duty today for any new cases which were reported. I'll call him when we're in the car asking him to hold back heading in with his team until we can get down there and assess the situation. How long will it take us to get there from here exactly?" Danni demanded, already moving towards the office where her bag still was.
"With you driving it will probably take thirty minutes, with me behind the wheel we're looking more at twenty." Steve answered over his shoulder as he headed towards his own office. Kono shook her head at the comment before she looked towards Jack who met her eyes as he swiftly saved something on his laptop, clearly closing down the program. She raised an eyebrow at him when he spoke.
"You good with taking my car down to the crime scene?" He asked her, going onto explain when she shot him a questioning look. "I have certain equipment in the trunk which we may need when we're down at the scene and it would take time, we don't necessarily have to transfer it over to your car."
Kono nodded at him before she turned and headed into her own office, moving to her desk and unlocking the top drawer so she could take out the gun which she stored there when she was in headquarters. She checked the clip before nodding at herself and headed back into the main bul-pen in time to see Steve and Danni moving towards the doors, both sporting serious looks on their face, speaking quietly to each other though she couldn't catch the words. She couldn't help but raise her eyebrow when she saw Danni sigh and pull out her car keys from her bag, glancing at them before she held them out to Steve who took them from her, a faint smile appearing on his face briefly before it disappeared into the look which they referred to as his SEAL look.
Clearly the need for them to get down to the scene quickly overruled on this occasion Danni's rule about Steve being behind the wheel of her car.
"We're going to head down there now so we'll see you both down there." Danni called back to them from over her shoulder, her gaze landing on Kono who nodded at her, watching as the pair of them disappeared out of the door. She turned her head back to Jack as the taller man approached her and spoke.
"Have you've gotten everything that you need?"
"Yeah, lets head over there." She answered as she followed him out of the door, her gaze fixed on his back.
Jack was still a mystery to her. She knew the basics about him, the same as everyone on the team did. She knew that he had lived in Washington DC until the previous Friday. She knew that he had two young daughters named Poppy and Bella and that they had arrived yesterday with his older sister and two nephews and she knew that he was their liaison officer with the NSA but that was all she knew, everything else about him was so far a mystery.
She forced her mind away from the blond and to the information which she had been told when she got in about Lee and the bail paperwork and the fact that both Chens had somehow managed to make bail. The case was beginning to grow messy and it seemed that their Arsonist, whoever they were, was good at cleaning up messes.
"My car is over this way." Jack commented, his hand gripping her elbow for a split second to attract her attention before he let go and led her over to a dark grey Lexus which had been parked next to Chin's motorbike.
"Is this your car or is it a rental one?" She asked him curiously as she raised an eyebrow at it, surprised by how nice it was. Jack shot her a quick look over the roof as he walked around the driver's side.
"The car is mine, I bought if over the weekend." He answered her as he unlocked the car, pulling the door open and climbed in. Kono followed suit, climbing into the passenger seat, a smile coming to her face when she noticed the single booster seat and baby seat in the back of the car as well as the tell-tale sign of a discarded toy flung in-between them as though the owner had grown board to it, all of which pointed to the car she was in being a family car.
She remained silent looking towards Jack as he turned the key in the ignition and reversed out of the spot. Danni's car was already gone though with Steve driving it, that was no real surprise. Kono had yet to experience driving in a car with her boss but from the way that Danni had described it, he clearly had a love for speed which went hand in hand with Danni's car which was clearly built for speed.
She tilted her head to one side, studying Jack for a moment as he pulled the car out of the space and drove out of the car park before she spoke.
"So, Danni mentioned that your kids arrived yesterday from Washington? How did that go? Any issues?" She queried, surprised when he turned to her and gave her a large goofy grin which she hadn't seen from him before.
"It was great, the plane actually landed early so I didn't have to wait too long for them in the arrival lounge. It was good to be able to see them and to give them both a hug. It's just…" His voice trailed off as he shrugged, his eyes flickering away from her to focus on the road.
"That's good Brah that they are back with you now, I can't imagine being away from them was easy. They came over with your sister and nephews, right? What about their Mom, is she coming over at a later date to join you guys over here?" She asked him, surprised when the soft smile which had lingered on his face disappeared as though it had never existed in the first place.
"No" He said shortly, his hands tightening on the steering wheel. For a moment Kono thought that was all he was going to say on the matter when he spoke again, still in the same flat tone as before. "Their mother is dead."
"She's dead?" Kono repeated. Her eyes widening in horror as she realised the pain, she must have caused him with her casual question. "Oh man, I'm so sorry for your loss Jack, I didn't mean to drag up bad memories for you. Was her death a recent thing?" She couldn't help but ask.
"It was" He answered, taking in a shaky breath before he spoke again. "And you don't have to be sorry about it because we aren't." Kono's mouth fell open at the chilly reply but she remained silent. Whatever had happened between Jack and the mother of his children had clearly been bad though she had to admit that she was now curious over it. She looked back at him when he carried on. "I would prefer if you didn't mention anything about her to the others Kono, if I want them to know about the situation then I'll tell them."
"Yeah of course Jack. Its not my place to tell anyone so have no fear because my lips are sealed on the topic Brah." She responded instantly, earning herself a smile from him.
"Good, I appreciate it Kono." He said before he frowned slightly. "Do you know where we're meant to be going because I'm not going to lie, I have absolutely no idea" He admitted. "My knowledge of Hawaii is pretty sparse as you can imagine. Danni's going to take me out over the weekend and show me some of the shortcuts which she was taught but until them, I'm as useful as a tourist when it comes to directions." His tone was rueful making Kono laugh.
"Maybe I should come with the pair of you as well. Danni is good, make no mistake about that, but she's not what I would call an expert either. I however have lived on the island my whole life and know it like the back of my hand. Probably best if we keep it between the three of us though because I'm pretty positive that if Steve finds out the plan then he'll insist on coming and driving and from Danni has told me, being in a car with him is not necessarily the best thing." Kono stated with a shake of her head.
"She's definitely not wrong there, I can personally vouch for it. I went with him to pick up Rita Chen yesterday remember. I'm pretty sure I lost about a year from my life span just based on the way he takes corner, add to that how he was after Danni and him had their disagreement over the coms… well." He told her with another amused smile.
"I thankfully haven't had the pleasure, the only two people on the team I've driven with is Chin and now you and both of you are what I would call safe and steady drivers. I can't see you hurtling down the street in a car unless we were in a car chase and had to be." She remarked thoughtfully before lifting her hand and pointing past him. "Take the next here and then head down the road, we want to take the second right." Kono instructed. He nodded at her and hit the indicator, letting a car pass by before he turned into the road.
"Being a safe driver comes hand in hand with being a father, like you said, unless I'm in a car chase then I'm happy to keep to the speed limit." He admitted as he took the right she had mentioned.
"Carry on to the bottom on this road and then head left, we need to go straight on then." She stated before changing the subject. "So, I'm guessing that you're renting a house at the moment?" She asked him casually with a glance out of the window.
"Actually, I'm staying with a friend out here, he's a stock broker so he has plenty of money and better for me, plenty of room for the family to stay with him. I'm already looking to get a place of my own though so that Poppy and Bella have somewhere stable and a place for us." He answered her.
"So, the plan is for you to be with us on the team for good then?" Kono asked, smiling when Jack nodded with a sigh.
"I don't know if its for good but it will certainly be for a while, they did it for me but…" He stopped suddenly and shook his head, giving her a quick glance as though he was surprised that he had said so much to her before he looked back through the window screen. "It looks like we're here." He stated as he pulled the car to a stop behind Danni's Camaro and killed the engine.
Kono pushed the door open and stepped out, wrinkling her nose at the smell which the fire had left behind in the air. The scene seemed different to the one they had been at the day before. More of the house stood and it seemed as though it has sustained less damage then she had been expecting.
She waited until Jack was at her side before she made her way over to the tape, flashing her badge at the uniformed officer and stepped beneath it. The area like yesterday was filled with CSU Agents but they seemed to be holding back for a moment. She nodded towards the few who looked their way before she entered the property through the charred door, looking around her instantly as she followed the sound of Steve's and Danni's voices into the living room where they were both standing with another man who was dressed in the already familiar CSU navy blue jumpsuit.
"Hey" She said as a way of announcing herself, her eyes flickering around the room before they landed on the two charred bodies lying next to each other on the floor. A Medical Examiner who she didn't recognise was kneeling next to them, ignoring everything which was happening around him as he took down some notes clearly waiting for a couple of stretchers to be brought in. She glanced back at Danni, surprised to see that the other woman was watching her with a concerned look in her eyes. "Is that…" Kono didn't bother finishing her sentence, merely waving her hand towards the bodies, wincing when Danni nodded at her.
"Doctor Lloyd is going to have to make a positive identification once he's back in the Morgue but it does appear from the height that these are Martin and Rita Chen." Danni confirmed, reaching up and rubbing the back of her neck, an action which Kono noticed attracted Steve's attention straight away.
"You okay Danni?" He asked her, gently nudging the blond with his elbow.
"I'm fine." She answered him briefly, dropping her hand to her side as she focused back on Kono. "What about you? Are you okay?"
"All good here though I'm seriously glad that I missed breakfast this morning in the rush to get in." Kono admitted as she turned away from the Chen and took in the rest of the room.
"O'Connor" Steve said suddenly, attracting their attention, Kono looked over her shoulder in time to see the tall blond walk in, his eyes scouting everything before they focused on Steve, his eyebrow rising slightly in a silent question. "Most of the upstairs of the building isn't damaged so there is a good chance that there is a laptop up there for us to look at. I couldn't see one down here." He told him with a shrug.
"I can head up there and take a look." Jack replied as he turned his attention to the guy in the CSU jumpsuit who had stepped away from them to talk to someone in his team. "It's Kale Mead, right?" He queried as he held out his hand to the other man who took it with a surprised look. "I'm Jack O'Connor with the Governor taskforce, are you good with me bagging and taking any laptops I find with me or do you or one of your team need to log it in yourselves?" He asked him.
"Nice to meet you Jack, call me Kale." The other man answered with a friendly grin. "You can take the laptop with you. I believe Fatima found one stored in the main bedroom earlier once the fireman had given us the okay for us to head in before Jersey's call came through. She's already logged it in so I'll add a note to the record that you have signed for it." He stated.
"Great I appreciate that." Jack responded before he turned to Steve and Danni, his eyes flickering to the two dead bodies for a split second before focusing back. "If it's alright with you both then I'll grab the laptop and head back to headquarters with it. I can get a lot more information out of it there then I'll be able to get here." He said, nodding at Steve.
"Take it and head back there if that's what you need to do. There's bound to be some link between the Chens and the Arsonist on there. It's just a case of being able to find it." Steve remarked.
Kono looked back at Jack in time to see him give them a toothy grin which reminded her briefly of a shark.
"Oh, if there is something on here to find then me and Toast will find it, that much I can promise you." He told them before he turned back to Kale. "Which room was the laptop in did you day?" He asked
"I'm heading up there now so I'll take you, I've got the paperwork you need to sign anyway. Jersey, come and see me before you disappear." Kale said with a look at Danni before he and Jack left the room together. Kono turned back as Steve spoke, addressing his comment towards Danni.
"I'm going to go and check out the other rooms and see whether I can piece together exactly what went down here." He commented, dropping his hand down onto her shoulder and squeezing softly before he took his hand back and left the room. Kono thought she could detect some hesitation in his part but it was gone before she could be sure of it.
"Looks like it's just you and me Kono" Danni said with a smile as she turned to face her. "I need to talk to Elliot about the bodies, are you up for joining me?" She questioned. Kono's first instinct was to say no but she stopped herself. She knew that being a cop wasn't ever going to be a pretty job and the sooner she got used to being in the vicinity of dead bodies and the smells that they would encounter at various crime scenes, the better it would be for her.
"I'll come with you to talk to him." She answered, detecting a flare of approval in Danni's gaze though all the blonde did was nod at her and turn, crossing the room and stopping by the bodies and the Doctor since hunched down beside them. Kono breathed out slowly, taking a moment to gather herself before she straightened her shoulder and followed the older woman, her gaze settling on the dark-haired Medical Examiner who glanced up at them both, bright blue eyes meeting hers for a moment before they focused on Danni when she spoke.
"Eli, this is Officer Kono Kalakaua who works with me on the Governor's taskforce. Kono, this is Doctor Elliot Lloyd with the Medical Examiner Office." She introduced, waving her hand between the two of them before her voice turned serious. "So, what do we have exactly? Was it the fire which killed them both or…?" Her voice trailed off as she shot him a questioning look.
"From first glance it looks like the fire killed them both, I can't detect any gunshot wounds like Rosie found in the other victims. It hard to tell with the amount of damage and charring but I can detect some severe damage to the joints, especially around the knee areas." He commented, waving his hand towards that area of the body as he continued speaking. "I would hazard a guess that these two were tortured before they were set on fire. With this rate of burning as well it's likely they were covered in some sort of accelerant. It would have easily have brought the whole house down except for the fact that the next-door neighbour happened to bring out their trash and realised what was happening and called it in." He explained.
Kono watched Danni slowly nod before she came to her feet again, dropping her hand on Elliot's back briefly before moving away from him, her eyes fixed on Kono as she waved her over, silently asking to join her.
"What do you think?" The smaller woman asked her once she had joined her, crossing her arms over her chest as she watched Kono with a curious look.
For a moment Kono remained silent before she let out a breath, realising that Danni was doing exactly what Chin had always told her that she would do, taking the time to teach her by making her use her own brain to come up with the answers.
"Well both Chens were most likely killed by the Arsonist, we can assume maybe that the house itself belongs to him which was why they were bailed here. If they were released last night and it's still only nine thirty in the morning than he was probably waiting for them to arrive. Perhaps he put them at ease at first so they would see it coming when he attacked them. Doctor Lloyd didn't mention anything about them being tied up but it would still be pretty difficult to torture someone without them being immobilised." Kono said slowly, looking around the room again.
"That is true." Danni said, attracting her attention again. "It is going to be hard to prove that they were tied down so how else could he have managed it?"
"Probably through the use of drugs." Kono stated confidently. "We know from the Medical reports that he has used some kind of drug on all his previous victims so it's not that big a stretch to assume he's used the same method with the Chen's. I doubt he had as much time with them as the other people he has killed so maybe he used a higher concentration or dosage of it to quicken the effects. We should ask whoever does the autopsy on them both to run a tox screen on both bodies and ask CSU to expedite the results as quickly as possible. The sooner we find out exactly what combination of drugs he is using the easier it will be to hunt him down."
Danni looked thoughtfully at her for a moment before she suddenly smiled warmly at her.
"That sounds like a good plan to me." She said, reaching out and patting Kono on the arm before she moved passed her and headed back to the Medical Examiner. Kono couldn't help the grin which came to her face at the clear approval. "With me Kono" Danni called out to her as she moved out of the living room and down the short passage to the front door. Kono followed her, raising her arm to cover her eyes for a moment from the already bright sunlight. She watched as Danni stopped and looked around her before she moved towards two Uniformed Officers who were standing near to the yellow tape, talking quietly to one another while they scanned the growing crowd. "Officer Booth, Officer Watkins, good morning" Danni said politely with a smile at them. "I understand that the fire was initially detected by one of the neighbours. Do you know which neighbour it was?" She asked them.
Kono waited until the taller of the two men looked around him curiously before focusing back on Danni who was waiting patiently for a response, her face fixed in her usual thoughtful look which Kono had noticed tended to reveal nothing about what the blonde was thinking.
"He was here earlier but he must have gone back to his house, now I think about it I think he did mention that the noise was bothering him. He lives in that house there." The man said, lifting his hand and pointing at the house next door to the right of where they were.
"Great, thank you for your help." Danni said, glancing towards Kono and nodded towards the house in question, silently telling the other woman to follow her. Kono came to her side as they moved away from the Officers and spoke.
"What do you think happened? Do you think that the Arsonist has made a mistake?" She asked Danni.
Danni seemed to consider her question for a moment before she shrugged at her.
"It's hard to tell." She admitted. "But with everything we know about him, I think it's safe to say that this house was meant to burn a lot quicker than it did. He hadn't done is homework and it could cost him."
Kono frowned slightly at the comment, wondering what Danni meant by it, but there was no time to ask as Danni stopped outside the front door and knocked on it, waiting patiently, her eyes moving around her as though she was quietly admiring the garden.
Kono glanced to the door when she heard the sound of footsteps approaching and forced a smile onto her face when it opened revealing an older looking man standing in front of them. He looked as though he was in his sixties, a shock of white hair covering his head as faded blue eyes peered at them both through thick rimmed glasses.
"Can I help you with something?" He asked them curiously.
"I'm sorry to bother you Sir, my name is Detective Williams and this is Officer Kalakaua, we're with the Governor taskforce. We were hoping if it wasn't too much trouble for you if we could come in and ask you a few questions about what you saw earlier in regards to the fire which happened next door?" Danni asked, her tone respectful as she smiled at the man, showing him her badge at the same time. Kono tapped her fingertip against the badge secured on her belt watching as his eyes flickered between them both again.
"The fire next door." The man repeated before he nodded at them. "Of course, please come inside." He offered. Danni nodded, looking towards Kono with an encouraging smile as they stepped into the hallway and followed him into the living room which reminded Kono of her grandmother's living room. He sat down in the chair and waved a hand at the empty sofa situated opposite it.
Kono say down next to Danni, glancing around her again before Danni started to speak, in the same respectful tone as before.
"Could you tell us what happened Mr…?" Her voice trailed off as she sent him a questioning look.
"Baxter, Earl Baxter." He told them with a nod. "It was like I told the other Officer who interviewed me earlier. I had woken up at my usual time of six thirty and taken the trash out at eight thirty, the same as I always do. I had just put it in the bin when I smelt smoke and I looked over and saw the house was on fire. I rang 911 and they sent the fire department over. It was strange to see though." He said, his voice trailing off leaving them in silence.
"What was strange about it?" Kono asked, blinking when the man looked back up at them again.
"Well you see, that house has been abandoned for months now, a family used to live there before but they disappeared without a word one night though I got no real idea why they did. Yesterday was the first time since they left that I had seen anyone there." He informed them with a slight shrug.
"Could you take a look at this photo and let me know if these were two of the people who you saw yesterday?" Danni asked him as she fiddled with her cell phone for a moment before holding it out to him, a picture of the Chens's mugshot showing on the screen.
Mr Baxter leaned forward, squinting at it for a moment before he nodded at them.
"That was them." He stated with a nod. "Or rather that was two of them who was there, there was another man who was with them, I remember because he was tall, much taller than the man in the photo and they seemed to be arguing with each other."
"They were arguing?" Danni said, leaning forward slightly. "Did you happen to hear what they were arguing about?" She asked him.
"I couldn't hear much but there was definitely something about fires and cops. The man whoever he was, was definitely angry though, I could tell that much from the tone of his voice."
Kono risked a quick glance at Danni who opened her mouth to speak when her cell phone went off suddenly. She watched as the older woman looked down at the screen, scanning the caller ID before she looked up.
"I'm sorry Mr Baxter, please excuse me for a moment. I have to take this call quickly." She said as she came up to her feet, hitting the connect button and left the room with a quick "Detective Williams" into the handset.
"Is there anything else that you can remember Mr Baxter? Do you know what they arrived last night or any information like that? Doesn't matter how small it may be." Kono said, aware of the soft murmur of Danni's voice from the hallway as she spoke to whoever it was who had rung her.
"It was around about nine twenty yesterday evening." He replied promptly. "I remember because my program was on and I glanced towards the clock when I heard the noise. This street is usually quiet in the evenings you see so something like raised voices stands out to us." He explained. Kono nodded, glancing back towards the door when it opened and Danni walked in again, sharing a quick with Kono.
"Mr Baxter, would you mind having a look at another picture for me and let me know whether the man in it was the man who you saw last night with the other couple?" She asked him, selecting something on her phone and moving towards him so he could see the photo without straining his eyes.
"It's hard to tell because it's a bit fuzzy but it definitely looks like him. He was tall you see and although he was wearing a cap, like a baseball cap. I'm pretty certain the hair was red, I'm remember it because it's rare to see red hair here but I couldn't be sure, it was only a small bit at the bottom of the cap." He told her, looking up at Danni who merely smiled at him.
"Thank you, Mr Baxter, you've been a great help to us." She said softly, turning to Kono, a flare of triumph in her eyes which made Kono grin back at her as she came to her own feet.
They finally had their break.
